My guest this week is Robyn Gobbel In this episode, Robyn and I discuss how trauma impacts brain development and brain function in kids.  We talk about what trauma can mean, from big T to little t, how adoption is a traumatic experience through a child's eyes, and the neuroscience of what trauma is doing to the brain. We also discuss looking past the “meaning” of the surfaced behavior(s) and how past traumas can impact all aspects of well-being: regulation, connection, health, and safety.  And of course, we wrap up with ways parents and caregivers can better regulate themselves, kids, and their families in these situations.  About the Guest: Robyn is a licensed clinical social worker who loves coffee, pink, and everything about the brain. Once, fairly recently, her teenager went ballistic on her for getting another glitter coffee mug in the mail. Robin loves cultivating deep, resonant connections with anyone who is up for it, and is especially fond of all the grownups in the world who love and care for kids impacted by trauma: Helpers, healers, educators, and parents. Her favorite thing is teaching anyone who will listen to harness the power of neuroscience so they can cultivate deep resonant connections. This would change the world if we could all do that: To be seen, to be with, feel and deeply know each other and ourselves. Robyn really believes that this can change everything. "You sure did have a good time at the Christmas party, Matt." When he was actively drinking, Matt heard statements like that more than a few times. But they carried no shame, because our society celebrates those who are good at, well, celebrating. Thinking back to teenage experimentation and 20s binge drinking, getting drunk is actually admirable...until it's not. On this episode, Sheri and Matt talk about the hypocrisy that led to over 15 million American alcoholics. They discuss the completely dismissed risks and dangers to young people, and they talk about how the runway afforded to high-functioning alcoholics keeps families locked in traumatic cycles for years and decades. They end discussing the reward of sobriety in a society that worships the bottle. They laugh a lot on this episode, even though the truth is anything but funny. If you love or loved an alcoholic, and your recovery could benefit from connection with people who understand, please check out our Echoes of Recovery program.

Hey welcome to another episode of Random Ish. Happy to finally have my old mic working again! Turns out, needing a new mixing board for karaoke, great for recording. So, chopping up a few topics that came to my attention, You and your friends have had the discussion on whether Facebook, Google, or Alexa is listening to you right? The Eiffel tower size asteroid that is heading towards Earth, there may be another reason for allowing it to crash into our atmosphere. $$ Another great has transitioned, and this time it was someone who I thought was cool as fuck and an inspiration for me and millions of others in a quiet cool way, Virgil Abloh. Don't forget the Random Question at the end. Let's get into... We've all experienced those times when we're having conversations with people and then suddenly when you're online you're seeing what you were talking about popping up all over your feed, well there's somebody who's here to refute that. Now, don't think that I'm buying what he's selling, let me just show you what he's saying and then we'll get into it. We all know that the whistleblower from Facebook just happened so, in my opinion it's possible that this guy might be getting paid from Facebook to say he's done an experiment. Moving on to the Bad habits, since it's cuffin season and we are out meeting people again here are some of the turn off's that may keep you from finding your Mr. or Ms. right now, or Right. Watch or listen to hear them! Nerd in Me! So, the asteroid I mentioned earlier? It will be in our atmosphere December 11th. Apparently, there are companies that track asteroids, and they have a monetary value. This asteroid, 4660 Nereus is already established to be worth 4.7 billion according to Astrerank. I want to pay tribute to Virgil Abloh. I really appreciate his art and work style. He is a manifester one who has stated he willed himself and can connect the dots of creation. I admire that and love that he was DJ turned errything else. Here are some of his creations. Let's do the last random question from this round, this one I funny because I just experienced it. A lot of people in time may start hanging out with a certain group of people and start doing things they would have never done before. Or start a new job and do things to make extra money that may be unethical. Or maybe get caught up doing things that will in the long run hurt them instead of helping them. If you are constantly questioning your own behavior and not happy with what you see, it may be time to make some changes.

Maybe when you look at your toddler or preschooler all you see is the “BAD” behavior: fighting with siblings, not sharing toys, NEVER listening to you or following your directions (especially the first time), terrible mealtime behaviors, a mean or a bad attitude, being strong-willed when it comes to bedtime and the bedtime routine,  tantrums, tantrums, and more tantrums, and oh, we can't forget the annoying whining.  You see the “BAD”.... it's easy to spot, you can't miss it. And sure, “BAD” or unwanted behavior doesn't mean your child is a bad kid and it doesn't mean you're a bad parent, but that doesn't change much of your feelings.  You're sick and tired of being, well, sick and tired.  You're sick and tired of feeling how parenting a toddler, your own child, seems and feels so dang difficult… maybe impossible. You're done with feeling frustrated at mealtime or bathtime or potty time or any time when your kiddo acts up and you only see those “BAD” behaviors.  There's got to be an easier way, there's got to be joy to parenting otherwise parents would stop becoming parents, and you're ready to turn things around.  If this sounds even just a tiny bit like you, of how you're feeling, this episode's for you. Let me tell you how to turn things around when you only see “BAD” behavior. Let's turn things around, shall we? Let's go to the show.  IN THIS EPISODE: Laura Lynn explains the two things you can do when you only see “BAD” behavior;  She illustrates how doing these two things is the foundation for any other parenting strategies you may use; and  She shares a time in her own parenting when she felt stuck by “BAD” behavior.   SHOW NOTES Let's get you unstuck from only seeing the “BAD” behavior. On this week's Snack Size Edition of Eat! Drink! Smoke!, Tony and Fingers go over another incident of bad behavior by a passenger on an airplane. It got so bad, that the flight crew had to duct tape the man to his seat. Why is this type of behavior seemingly becoming more common, and was the flight crew's actions justified? Sometimes we can't help ourselves. Anger can come out of the blue and suddenly, we're hurting someone we care about.  I received an email from someone who believes that sometimes you need people in your life to understand that you are going to get upset now and again, and they should be empathetic for your inability to control it. They have ADHD and have a challenge controlling the emotions that come up.  What is the solution? Should those you love be more tolerant of hurtful behavior or should they put you in your place, telling you to stop or else?
