In 1897 a young man named Solomon fell in love with and married a beautiful young woman named Anna. They lived in Russia, which was dangerous at that time for a Jewish family, so Solomon moved to the United States, where he worked and saved until he had enough money to send Anna a ticket for the voyage across the ocean. But when Solomon went to meet Anna's ship, Anna's younger brother was waiting for him. Solomon took in her brother and worried and saved until he could send the money for Anna's passage again-but this time, Anna's older brother was waiting. When Solomon sent the money a third time and Anna's mother arrived, Solomon wondered if he would ever see his dear wife again. Anna & Solomon is based on the true story of the author's grandparents' immigration. Don't forget to check out our educational summer and fall books at www.SlothDreams.com

We accept as bedrock truth that every important test should be studied for. How often, though, do we explore what studying actually entails? Amy and Mike invited educators Anna Solomon and Kailey Ossanna to share effective study skills for test preparation. What are five things you will learn in this episode? 1. What makes studying a skill? 2. What does a lack of effective study skills look like? 3. What study skills are essential for students preparing for important exams? 4. Why are study skills best learned as interactive conversations? 5. Why is self-advocacy considered a study skill? This week on Unorthodox, we’re celebrating Purim and breaking the mold. First, Stephanie welcomes her special Purim co-hosts, friends of the show Kylie Unell and Abigail Pogrebin, who help her tell the story of Purim and offer their takes on some of the holiday’s larger themes. Next, Stephanie is joined by Anna Solomon, author of The Book of V., a fictionalized redefining of the story of Vashti. She explains that the binaries we’ve been taught — “that Vashti is wanton, wicked, selfish; and Esther virtuous, brave, selfless” — don't match up with what we actually find in The Book of Esther. From Vashti to Esther: Liel sits down with English professor Shaina Trapedo, who wrote about Purim-inspired beauty pageants for Esther in America, a new collection edited by former Unorthodox guest Stuart Halpern. She tells us about the surprising history of Jewish beauty pageants in America, and explains why the Esther aesthetic is more complex than it may seem. And finally, Mark checks in with former guest Shay Khatiri to find out what it’s like to be named after Ahasuerus. There’s just one week left to enter our Jewish Name of the Year bracket! Whose story are we telling? Is it the story we’re meant to live, or someone else’s? Is it forced on us by society or family or religion? How do we make sure it's ours?Anna Solomon’s provocative third novel, The Book of V., charts the paths of three women separated by generations, and their struggles to express their authentic selves. Woven into the Jewish story of Purim, the novel grapples with what is to have one’s own identity, especially as a women pressed by cultural ideas of who she should be. Anna and Justin discuss the challenges of writing in the age of COVID, releasing a book during lockdown, and the dance of parenting and working as a writer. They also discuss the surprising wonder of letting go of the process and letting the writing "wander." The Book of V. has been named an NPR Best Book of 2020, a Good Morning America Book Club book, and has been praised by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, People Magazine and many more. I had the privilege of interviewing author Anna Solomon on the Good Morning America Book Club Instagram Live account. Her book, The Book of V., was the GMA Book Club pick for the month of May! The most recent of Anna’s three novels is The Book of V., an intricate tale interweaving three stories of three women spread out across three different centuries. I was completely floored when I reached the end of the book! Anna and I talked about the exploration and subversion of power and gender dynamics in her characters, the impact of female friendships, and the fundamental relationship between grandmothers, mothers, and daughters, plus her really interesting and visual writing process.
Anna Solomon is the author of three novels—The Book of V., Leaving Lucy Pear, and The Little Bride—and a two-time winner of the Pushcart Prize. Her short fiction, essays, and reviews have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Ploughshares, One Story, The Boston Globe, Tablet, and elsewhere. Anna is a graduate of Brown University and the Iowa Writers' Workshop and teaches writing at Barnard College, Warren Wilson's MFA Program in Creative Writing, and the 92Y Unterberg Poetry Center. Author Anna Solomon has hit gold with her latest book: The Book of V. This book about 3 women spans 3 different timelines and connects beautifully. It will make a great book for book club. After all, GMA (Good Morning America) has chosen it for their book club. I couldn't ask Anna about that because I talked to her a couple of weeks before, but I'm sure she's excited. I want to formally thank Anna Solomon for taking the time to be in my podcast and I hope you all enjoy this episode and hope you give this book a try. NextFab is an incredible makers' resource. But they're not a makerspace. Instead, they are a network of makerspaces, in the Delaware Valley. Specifically, their locations are in Philadelphia, North Philadelphia and--as of 2017--Wilmington, Delaware. During Podcast Movement 2018, in Philadelphia, we had the privilege of recording, live-on-tape from the Talkshoe booth, with two special guests. Anna Solomon is NextFab's Assistant Sales Manager. She is also the first woman to graduate the University of Delaware's Entrepreneurship/Entrepreneurial Studies program. Her background, as a maker, includes both engineering and economics, and she's been with NextFab since 2016, according to her LinkedIn page. Jezabel Careaga is a chef, designer, and the proprietor, both of Jezabel's Cafe and of sister business Jezabel's Studio in Philadelphia. A talented maker, she is a NextFab member who designed and built many of her cafe's furnishings at the makerspaces! As a chef, meanwhile, she fuses traditional Argentine flavor with new ingredients and techniques. (And she caters events and offers cooking classes, as well!) During Day Three of Podcast Movement, Anna and Jezabel talked about NextFab, their individual maker experiences and what's next for the soon-to-be-expanded maker facilities. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you'll hear: How Anna and Jezabel first became interested in making and entrepreneurship; What NextFab is currently doing; How Jezabel's needs for her small business led her to become a NextFab member/maker; What makers can expect to see, when they enter the space; The story of NextFab; How Jezabel's small business, Jezabel's Cafe, came into being; What an "average day" is like for each of them, as maker/entrepreneurs; What a maker might experience, when coming into one of the maker spaces with a concept but no idea how to work through the process; How an exciting pilot program is making a difference to the maker community in Wilmington; The ways in which the community may be changing, as a result of the makers and small businesses; The crucial factors involved in empowering more women to become makers and engineers.
Martha Frankel’s guests this week are Cary Elwes, Anna Solomon, Jeff Pearlman and Peter Carlin.

First Draft interview with Anna Solomon
Rates of family and sexual violence in Papua New Guinea are among the highest in the world, with 70% of women experiencing some degree of physical or sexual assault in their lifetime. Children are also significantly affected. While much is said about the levels of violence, less is heard about important work being done in all sectors of Papua New Guinea to address this pervasive issue. The new approaches being taken warrant broader attention both within and outside of Papua New Guinea. On 20 May, the Lowy Institute hosted a panel of exceptional leaders from Papua New Guinea’s government, civil society and private sector to discuss these approaches. Anna Solomon is the Secretary for Papua New Guinea’s Department for Community Development and Religion and is leading the government’s response. Denga Ilave is the Operations Manager for Femili PNG, the Papua New Guinean NGO that runs the innovative Lae Case Management Centre. Kymberley Kepore is CEO of the Oil Search Foundation, which has made gender-based violence one of its top priorities. Kevin Byrne is the Deputy Chair of the Business Coalition for Women, a group of companies and corporate leaders who are working together to drive positive change for women and businesses in Papua New Guinea.
Today's show features conversations with multiple authors, all of whom have contributed to a new anthology entitled Labor Day: True Birth Stories by Today's Best Women Writers. Guests include the anthology's editors, Eleanor Henderson and Anna Solomon, as well as Amy Brill, Arielle Greenberg, Cristina Henriquez, Heidi Julavits, Jane Roper, Rachel Jamison Webster, Sarah Jefferis, and Sarah Strickley. Booklist says "This isn’t a how-to book, nor does it present a case for the ‘perfect birth,’ which sets it apart from the plethora of childbirth manuals and lends it broader appeal and a very different type of resonance." And Emma Straub says "Pregnancy made my body ravenous for food and my brain ravenous for stories like this, stories of how other women had crossed the great divide. In delivery rooms, in the backseats of cars, and at home, these women tell their birth stories so clearly that they must have had stenographers present on the scene. I loved reading this book with my baby asleep in the next room, and will give it to every pregnant woman I know from here on out, forever." Monologue topics: Labor Day, hard work, parenthood.
