The Main Character A Novel By Jaclyn Goldis A bestselling thriller author arranges a luxury train trip that is not what it appears to be in this electrifying modern homage to Agatha Christie from the author of the “tense and twisty” (Julie Clark, New York Times bestselling author) The Chateau. Reclusive, mysterious author Ginevra Ex is famous for her unusual approach to crafting her big bestselling thrillers: she hires real people and conducts intensive interviews, then fictionalizes them. Her latest main character, Rory, is thrilled when Ginevra presents her with an extravagant bonus—a lavish trip along Italy's Mediterranean coast on the famed, newly renovated Orient Express. But when Rory boards the train, she's stunned to discover that her brother, her best friend, and even her ex-fiancé are passengers, as well. All invited by Ginevra, all hiding secrets. With each stop, from Cinque Terre to Rome to Positano, it becomes increasingly clear that Ginevra has masterminded the ultimate real life twisty plot with Rory as her main character. And as Ginevra's deceptions mount, and the lies and machinations of Rory's travel companions pile up, Rory begins to fear that her trip will culminate like one of Ginevra's books: with a murder or two. In the opulent compartments of the iconic train, Rory must untangle the shocking reasons why Ginevra wanted them all aboard—and to what deadly end. Another stylish and compulsively readable mystery from Jaclyn Goldis, this is the perfect read for fans of Ruth Ware, Lucy Foley, and Paula Hawkins.
On this week's Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, a conversation with Julie Clark, chief executive officer at the Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails.Clark talks about how she and her family made their way from North Carolina to Traverse City and embraced the northern Michigan outdoors.TART is among many organizations around the state with leaders working with local, state and federal government agencies, as well as foundations and private donors, to grow Michigan's trail network. In 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis released statistics estimating that outdoor recreation accounted for $862 billion in economic output (consumer spending), 1.9 percent (or $454 billion) of gross domestic product (GDP), and supported 4.5 million jobs. In Michigan, outdoor recreation in 2021 contributed $10.8 billion to the state economy, as well as supported 109,000 jobs and $5 billion in wages.
In the world of tech titans, competition extends beyond the boardroom to space conquest and extravagant lifestyles. However, one of the most intriguing competitions focuses on reversing the aging process itself: the Rejuvenation Olympics, Bryan Johnson's brainchild. Quickly rising to the top of the leaderboard is Julie Clark, a single mom in her 50s earning less than $100k per year. Today, she joins the show to teach you how to defy aging with her budget-friendly routine, which includes regular exercise, sauna sessions, a balanced diet with limited refined sugars and grains, and affordable supplements. Despite not having a billionaire's budget, Julie's aging rate — 0.665 (she only ages 66 out of 100 days) — is remarkable, demonstrating that longevity is within reach for many, without breaking the bank. Unlike many of her counterparts in the Rejuvenation Olympics, her routine is somewhat ordinary. She spends $27 a month on a gym membership and $79 a month on the longevity supplement NOVOS. Julie consumes about 16 ounces of a variety of vegetables daily, snacking on carrots, radishes, and peppers during her workday. She limits the amount of refined sugars and grains she eats, and at least three times a week, Julie uses the sauna for 20 minutes before taking a cold shower. Through these simple, affordable health and longevity methods, Julie is considered a top competitor at the Rejuvenation Olympics — measured by the DunedinPACE test, the gold standard for assessing the pace of human aging. This test analyzes DNA methylation marks in white blood cells, providing unique insight into an individual's rate of aging. In this episode, you'll uncover the diverse approaches to anti-aging with me and Julie, showcasing that while there is no one-size-fits-all solution, healthy habits, including exercise, diet, and smart supplementation, can significantly impact healthspan and lifespan. Whether you're a billionaire or an average Joe, the key to longevity may be simpler and more accessible than you think. For the first time ever she decides to leave home, to break free of everything that has kept her safe, and use her gifts to answer the questions that have always eluded her. Embark on a journey with me, Simon Devere, as we dissect the seductive world of biohacking juxtaposed against the enduring truths of fitness basics. As we navigate through Brian Johnson's tech-inspired health regimen and my own revelations, I'll illuminate the pros and cons of innovative health strategies versus tried-and-true wellness practices. We'll scrutinize the annual tradition of setting New Year's fitness resolutions, revealing the mightier power of continuous goal refinement. I'm fresh off a holiday diet clean-up and eager to share how strategic resets can shape our body composition goals throughout the year, much like the 'dry January' movement is showing us.This episode peels back the layers of fasting myths versus facts, focusing on the hard science behind fat loss. Autophagy and metabolic buzzwords are often overplayed in the media, but we'll hone in on how a caloric deficit — no matter the method — is the true hero in weight management. I'll recount advising a friend and new father to pause his fat loss regime, demonstrating the crucial balance between dieting, metabolic health, and real-life demands. As we dissect the fitness industry's flirtation with pseudoscience, I'll celebrate the figures who choose transparency over deception, even amidst philosophical differences. In our final act, we consider the pantheon of supplements and anti-aging regimens against the backdrop of essential health behaviors. Julie Clark, a standout in the Rejuvenation Olympics, exemplifies how simplicity often trumps complexity when it comes to health outcomes. I'll advocate for an approach that prioritizes quality of life alongside longevity, highlighting the importance of diet, movement, and our symbiosis with the natural world. As we wrap up, remember that the synergy of mental and physical health can't be bought — it's nurtured through discipline, curiosity, and the ever-important balance of lifting and learning.Producer: Thor BenanderEditor: Luke MoreyIntro Theme: Ajax BenanderIntro: Timothy DurantFor more, visit Simon at The Antagonist

This shocking truth should alarm you and compel all Americans to take action. She reveals chilling threats posed by traffickers, cartels, and an unknown influx of potentially dangerous migrants. Julie describes the complete loss of sovereignty, how ranchers and homeowners are losing everything. She explains the corrupt forces enabling this humanitarian and security catastrophe. And she exposes the incumbent Republican congressman ACTIVELY fighting to keep the border open and flood America with unknown migrants. PopaHALLics #93: 'Trouble A-Popping!"A wide-ranging discussion of various pop culture options has one thing in common: Trouble! Two best friends who don't realize they should be worst enemies ("RRR"). The zombie apocalypse ("The Last of Us"). Trying to bring someone back from Hell ("Hell Bent"). And more. Kate also discusses a very weird dating prompt.Streaming:"RRR," Netflix. This alternative history finds two real-life Indian revolutionaries becoming best friends and taking on the English colonial government in the 1920s. The hyper-reality (reality-enhanced?) action and dance sequences will blow your mind."The Last of Us," HBO Max. The video game that sold 20 million copies becomes a promising post-apocalyptic TV series. Joel (Pedro Pascal) develops a surrogate father/daughter relationship with teen Ellie (Bella Ramsey)—maybe the secret to mankind's survival—on a dangerous cross-country journey beset by human killers and zombies. "Emily in Paris," Netflix. Kate re-examines her feelings on the light, frothy series about the Chicago marketing executive (Lily Collins) who struggles with her job in fashion and romance in France. Was she too harsh?"Confess, Fletch," Showtime and rental. Chevy Chase played the reporter/sleuth with a penchant for goofy disguises in two 1980s movies. Now Jon Hamm ("Mad Men") takes on the role with considerable charm but a less jokey, more low-key approach in a lighthearted mystery about a murder, an art theft, and a kidnapping.Books:"Hell Bent," by Leigh Bardugo. In this worthy sequel to "Ninth House," Yale's Alex Stern, who can see ghosts, is determined to steal a soul out of Hell. But she's dealing with forces beyond her control. Kate loves it."The Last Flight," by Julie Clark. In this can't-put-it-down thriller, two women desperate to escape their troubled lives exchange identities at the airport. Things quickly go south."The Pioneers: The Heroic Story of the Settlers Who Brought the American Ideal West," by David McCullough. The Pulitzer Prize-winning historian rediscovers the story of the settlement of the immense Northwest Territory (the future states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin). Steve's entranced because it details the taming of the "howling wilderness" not far from where he grew up.Music:Let's vibe! The Victorian mansion was perpetually dark and shuttered, surrounded by overgrown trees that cast long, spindly shadows. The old lady who lived there was known to threaten trespassers with a sharp-handled broom. Rumor had it there was even a dead body buried in her backyard. And so every Halloween, the neighborhood trick-or-treaters steered clear of that driveway. That is, until this Halloween night, when we noticed something unusual: The big house's porch light was on. The door was open. And Tommy dared me to go inside.

On this episode, we deconstruct them - what drives these scammers? What are the hallmarks of one? How do we avoid them? Do we telegraph our weaknesses to others? We talk about accountability and blame, transferred anger, forgiveness, and the ways in which hurt people often hurt people. What's wrong with taking justice into our own hands, especially when it involves a powerful man who took advantage of a woman!? What happens when the legal system fails us?

Bonnie Garmus talks to Carol Fitzgerald about her debut novel, LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY, which has been getting a ton of buzz since it came out in April. It was a “Good Morning America” Book Club selection for April and an instant New York Times bestseller. Bonnie shares that one day she walked away from a meeting, headed to her desk, and banged out the first chapter of the book --- and explains what inspired that. She also talks about Elizabeth Zott being a character in an earlier book draft, where her role was not part of the main storyline, and why she loves writing her. She studied chemistry to write this book and brought on chemist friends to check her work lest the publisher's copywriters needed to brush up on their science skills. She discusses why she wanted to set the book against the timing of the late '50s and '60s. Carol guesses why Bonnie's dog is named 99; Bonnie likes her idea, but that is not the reason. They also explore the rest of the characters, including the amazing dog Six-Thirty. We dedicate this episode to Jenny Colvin, host of the Reading Envy podcast. We were stunned and deeply saddened to learn of her sudden death. Jenny will be deeply missed by the book community. Our thoughts are with her loved ones and family. On this episode we recap our biblioadventure to Manchester, VT for Booktopia at the Northshire Bookstore, which included stops at a charming library and several bookstores on the way there and back. Chris also attended two online events — one through the Maine Women Writers Collection featuring Dawn Potter, Elizabeth De Wolfe, and Carol A. Dana. The other online event was Mondays at Beinecke presentation by Gabrielle Colangelo about her exhibition, “We Are Everywhere: Lesbians in the Archive.” Our second quarter readalong pick was a hit with listeners — TWO OLD WOMEN by Velma Wallis. Thumbs up all around. Emily also read Wallis' memoir, RAISING OURSELVES: A GWITCH'IN COMING OF AGE STORY FROM THE YUKON RIVER and Chris dipped into BIRD GIRL AND THE MAN WHO FOLLOWED THE SUN. We'll announce our third quarter readalong on episode 159. Chris enjoyed THE FERVOR by Alma Katsu. We also read two forthcoming novels that we couldn't wait to get to! Emily read THE LIES I TELL by Julie Clark (release date 6/21/22) and Chris SHUTTER by Ramona Emerson (release date 8/2/22). Are you ready for the Big Book Summer Challenge? We are! It's the 10th anniversary of this popular reading challenge and we had the pleasure of sitting down with creator and host, Sue Jackson. We know half of the world is easing into winter, but here in the US we're gearing up for summer. The Big Book Summer Challenge runs from Memorial day (May 27) to Labor Day (September 5, 2022). Emily is going to read Kent Haruf's PLAINSONG SERIES and Chris will read THE WARMTH OF OTHER SUNS by Isabel Wilkerson.
