Jock Serong talks about the writing craft and process behind his novel Cherrywood.Jock tells us how this novel started with several image fragments and a variety of influences, from Peter Carey's Oscar & Lucinda and Susanna Clarke's Piranesi, to Enid Blyton's The Faraway Tree, and the Narnia Chronicles, with a little Dickens and Austen thrown in.Jock's explanation of how a handful of ideas became a story is one of the best I've heard. He also tells us his thoughts on writing place as character, how to describe minor characters so they stand out, how the structure of the novel changed, breaking the ‘show don't tell' rule, and why the editing process should be considered cooperative rather than corrective. ABOUT JOCK SERONGJock Serong is the author of Quota, winner of the 2015 Ned Kelly Award for Best First Fiction; The Rules of Backyard Cricket, shortlisted for the 2017 Victorian Premier's Award for Fiction, finalist of the 2017 MWA Edgar Awards for Best Paperback Original, and finalist of the 2017 Indie Book Awards Adult Mystery Book of the Year; and On the Java Ridge, which won the Colin Roderick Award and, internationally, the inaugural Staunch Prize (UK), and was shortlisted for the 2018 Indie Awards. He has won praise for his trilogy of historical novels Preservation; The Burning Island, which earned him the ARA Historical Novel Prize and the Historia Award for Historical Crime Fiction (France); and The Settlement, which was shortlisted for the Voss Prize and the ARA Historical Novel Prize.Website: www.jockserong.comBuy Cherrywood by Jock Serong here.Buy Dirrayawadha by Anita Heiss here.BUILD AN AUTHOR WEBSITE COURSETo receive notifications about course dates, the free author website workshop and early bird discounts, sign up here. From the first encounters between the Dharug and the British on Dyarubbin in 1791, to the first ever land grant from the British regime to the original inhabitants of Australia in 1816, from Macquarie's aborted ‘native institute', the first Indigenous/British marriage and all through the stolen generation to the present day, Yarramundi's family have been at the centre of the unfolding relations amongst the people that call Western Sydney home. In this podcast we discuss The History Listen podcast episode Yarramundi and the people of Dyarubbin and the Sydney University research that debunks one of the stories they tell. As with anything do with the people of Dyarubbin, Grace Karskens research is wonderfully helpful and the State Government published Dyarubbin: Mapping Aboriginal history, culture and stories of the Hawkesbury River that she was involved with is well worth a look if you're interested in the specific geography of these last few episodes. This episode we discuss the story of the Sydney Cove, a ship that set sail from Calcutta bound for its eponymous port in 1796. The Sydney Cove never quite made it the whole way, but after countless misadventures just under half of her crew did. Join us as we discuss a story that is not only all but unbelievable but is one of the most significant stories of first contact between First Nations people and visitors from across the British Empire. This tale was more or less lost to time for much of the 20th century but from the unearthing of the shipwreck in 1977 there was no putting this tale back in the rum bottle, as it were. The original inspiration for this story came from reading Jock Serong's work of historical fiction: Preservation. The factual heavy lifting was largely courtesy of Mark McKenna's book: From the Edge; Australia's Lost Histories. If you'd like to read the full text of William Clark's published account of their journey you can find it, and an assortment of other relevant correspondence, here. And if you know where we an get a carton of James Squire's Preservation Ale we'd love to hear from you!

Turns out, we agree! The Rules of Backyard Cricket comes in third on our rankings after tearing our hearts to pieces as much as we tore it to pieces. A story about brothers, cricket and crime, this book opens with our protagonist and perspective, Darren Keefe, tied up and gagged in the back of a car, with a bullet wound to keep him company. Our story follows Darren’s reminisces as he reflects on his career, from his childhood playing cricket all the way through his life playing club and national representative cricket. As his loose-cannon inability to make sensible choices continues to get him into trouble, we start to unravel how Darren ended up in that car, and why it might have been inevitable.

We discuss chapters 1-8 of Jock Serong's The Rules of Backyard Cricket. Beginning with our protagonist, Darren Keefe, with a gunshot wound, tied up in the back of the car, it's immediately apparent that this is going to be a slightly different cricket story to the ones normally lining the average cricket fanatic's bookshelf. Exploring Darren and his brother Wally's youth as they go from being the rapscallion children of a single mother to competent professional cricketers, it's not your standard mystery affair but the questions come gnawing all the stronger for it. With Herds tied up in the boot to solve this one, can he evade the traps of this unconventional puzzle?

In this Conversations from Byron podcast, Jock Serong speaks with Chris Hanley about his new book The Burning Island. They discuss creating in the time of Covid-19, while Jock walks us through some of his researching and writing habits. Delving into the book itself, Jock explains where the idea for the story originated and its relationship to his previous novel Preservation. They go on to discuss some of the numerous themes present in the novel, from seafaring to parent-child relationships and problems of addiction. About the book: Eliza Grayling, born in Sydney when the colony itself was still an infant, has lived there all her thirty-two years. Too tall, too stern—too old, now—for marriage, she looks out for her reclusive father, Joshua, and wonders about his past. There is a shadow there: an old enmity. When Joshua Grayling is offered the chance for a reckoning with his nemesis, Eliza is horrified. It involves a sea voyage with an uncertain, probably violent, outcome. Insanity for an elderly blind man, let alone a drunkard. Unable to dissuade her father from his mad fixation, Eliza begins to understand she may be forced to go with him. Then she sees the vessel they will be sailing on. And in that instant, the voyage of the Moonbird becomes Eliza's mission too. Irresistible prose, unforgettable characters and magnificent, epic storytelling: The Burning Island delivers everything readers have come to expect from Jock Serong. It may be his most moving, compelling novel yet.

How do historical novelists mix research and imagination to bring stories to life? Do they get anxious about wading into academic turf? To investigate these questions, Clare and Yves chat to Jock Serong, award-winning novelist and author of Preservation—a captivating thriller based on the true story of a shipwreck in colonial Australia. Jock reflects on the archive of human character he encountered in his former life as a lawyer, shares tales of battling his editor over animal-skin water carriers, and confesses a secret love of Google Earth.

Books and Ideas at Montalto

Jock Serong is known as an author of gripping books about crime and catastrophe. His stories spark and seethe with tense emotional and political detail, often drawing on his other skills – in law, and in surf writing. He’s won wide critical acclaim for Quota, On the Java Ridge and The Rules of Backyard Cricket. Serong’s latest, Preservation, takes readers through a different kind of crime writing – this time set in 1797, and based on the true story of the shipwrecked Sydney Cove. It follows Lieutenant Joshua Grayling’s investigation of the wreck, its three terribly injured survivors, and their encounters with an unfamiliar land. At Montalto, Jock Serong chats with Elizabeth McCarthy about Preservation, human misdeeds, and the search for truth amid conflicting accounts.

Cover with enough boiling water to rise 2cm above the potatoes. Simmer gently for about 25 minutes, or until the potatoes are soft enough to mash. While the potatoes are boiling, make the topping. Put the oil, garlic, thyme leaves, mint leaves, lemon zest and juice into a small bowl with 1/8 of a teaspoon of salt and a good grind of pepper. Stir to combine and set aside. Drain the potatoes into a sieve and set over a large bowl (you’ll use some of the cooking water so don’t throw it away). Pick out the thyme and mint springs, then return to the saucepan (along with the garlic and lemon peel). Use a masher to mash the potatoes, adding 100ml of olive oil and about 140ml of the cooking water slowly as you go, until you get a smooth mash. Transfer the mash to a platter and use the back of a spoon to create dips in the surface. Drizzle with the herb and garlic oil topping evenly over and finish with a good grind of black pepper.
