A woman's husband goes up to the attic to retrieve something and down comes…a different husband. Wouldn't we all sometimes like to exchange the husband we have for a better, newer, or just different model? Holly turned this idea into a novel that is both funny and thoughtfully considered. It may not, in fact, be such a great thing to have an endless supply of potential husbands so easy to exchange.  Her book has been optioned by Apple Plus for a limited series and I just saw that Juno Temple, the actress who played Keeley in the Ted Lasso series, is slated to play the starring role.   And because it is April, and April is National Poetry Month, we're discussing books related to poets. Not everyone loves poetry, but these books aren't actually poetry–so you can still partake of poetry month. They are historical fiction, memoirs, essays, and children's books written by or inspired by poets.    Books Mentioned in This Episode:   1- The Husbands by Holly Gramazio   2- Lakewood by Megan Giddings   3- I Used to Live Here Once: The Haunted Life of Jean Rhys by Miranda Seymour   4- Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys     5- Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte     6- The Animals in That Country by Laura Jean McKay     7- Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line by Elizabeth Lovett     8- Saint X by Alexis Schaitkin     9-  A Five Star Read Recommended by Fellow Book Lover  Chelsea @2_girls_bookin_it - The Endless Fall by Emmerson Hoyt     10- The Swan's Nest by Laura Mcneal     11- You Could Make This Place Beautiful by Maggie Smith     12- Memorial Drive by Natasha Trethaway     13- Emily's House by Amy Belding Brown     14- Finding Langston by Lesa Cline-Ransome     15- Bite by Bite: Nourishments and Jamborees by Aimee Nezhukumatathil     16- World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil     17- The Poet's Dog by Patricia McLachlan     Media mentioned-- 1- Severance (Apple+, 2022 - Present)   2- Reduced Shakespeare Company--https://www.reducedshakespeare.com   3- Saint X (Hulu, 2023)

Saint X star Josh Bonzie revisited the podcast to discuss his hit from Hulu called Saint X. Bonzie had previously been on the podcast to discuss what fans could expect when Saint X was released on Hulu. Now that all of the episodes are out, Bonzie and I really got into some of the significant issues the show addresses regarding race, assumptions, stereotypes, discrimination, and how all of this can stem from one incident in your life. Bonzie plays Clive "Gogo" Richardson, who works at a fancy resort when a young attractive white woman goes missing and is ultimately found dead. For the rest of his life, Gogo has to face the repercussions of that one incident. If you haven't seen the show, I would recommend watching all of it before listening to this podcast because spoilers are ahead. But it was fascinating to hear from Bonzie again and really break down how fast your entire life can change with something entirely out of your hands and how this happens to various targeted communities all the time. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Ashley Pelletier Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: The series, which is told via multiple timelines, explores, and upends the girl gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman's mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.   The 8-episode series is adapted from Alexis Schaitkin's novel. Leila Gerstein (Mrs. America, The Handmaid's Tale, Hart of Dixie) wrote and will executive produce with Dee Rees (MUDBOUND) directing and executive producing the first episode. Stephen Williams (Watchmen) will also executive produce with David Levine and Zack Hayden for Anonymous Content, Aubrey Graham aka Drake, Adel “Future” Nur, and Jason Shrier for DreamCrew Entertainment (Euphoria), Alexis Schaitkin, and Steve Pearlman (Once Upon a Time). Saint X is a production of ABC Signature.   **Saint X's entire season is currently available to stream on Hulu. All of the actors spoke about the importance of this show and how some of your initial judgments going into the first episode might say more about you than it does the characters you are watching. While the show is full of constant twists and turns (going back and forth from the past to the present), it also regularly addresses serious issues, including stereotypes, racism, sexuality, media attention, tragedy, and more. While the show is heavy, there are lessons to learn from it. All of the actors spoke about how they worked on their characters, who made them better, how they got through some of the more challenging scenes, and what they did to lighten the mood while on set. Her fiction has been anthologized in The Best American Short Stories and The Best American Nonrequired Reading. She received her MFA in fiction from the University of Virginia, where she was a Henry Hoyns Fellow. She lives in Williamstown, Massachusetts, with her husband and their two children. You can find her on her website or follow her on Twitter.   In this episode Alexis Schaitkin and I discuss: Writing a story with mystery as a central premise without focusing on solving that mystery. Creating a fable-like feeling through the intentional use of tropes. The nature of community and isolation and how it relates to writing.   Plus, her #1 tip for writers. Alexis Schaitkin joins Marrie Stone to talk about her latest novel, Elsewhere (to be published by Celadon on June 28, 2022).  The speculative fiction story explores the perils and pleasures of motherhood, how mothers judge one another, how women can often disappear into motherhood — and into aging — and how sometimes they can find themselves again. The setting is evocative and the issues are profound.Schaitkin shares several backstories behind the novel, including the inspiration for this hauting fictional village, her many attempts to find her way into the story, how she let go of her expectations for the novel, and how she once again managed a large cast of characters. For novelists, there's mounds of advice for character development and structure. For speculative fiction writers, there are insights for creating effective rules for your world. For Schaitkin's fans, there's fun backstories on how she constructs her novels and the themes she remains interested in exploring. Schaitkin's first novel, Saint X, was a NYT Notable Book of 2020 and is being adapted into a miniseries by Hulu.  Download audio.  (Recorded on June 9, 2022) Music and sound design by Travis Barrett Barbara DeMarco-Barrett: www.penonfire.com Marrie Stone: www.marriestone.com Travis Barrett: https://travisbarrett.mykajabi.com

Saint X : By - Alexis Schaitkin - Novel Review The story-line of Saint X is slowly revealed in the most part by the main character, Claire, a child of seven when her 18-year-old sister Alison disappears on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint X. Alison is soon found deceased with no forensic evidence and a fairly sketchy cause of death. The last two men she's seen with are residents of the island and employees of the resort that Alison and Claire are staying at. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

Fresh voice talent Dana Dae leads a cast of 15 actors who deliver a cinematic atmosphere in this intricate story set in a Caribbean resort. Host Jo Reed talks with AudioFile contributor Brian Price about how the multicast narration enhances this atmospheric listen, written by Alexis Schaitkin. A family is vacationing at an exclusive resort, and their teenage daughter goes missing. Her body is found washed up on the beach two days later and her death is never solved. Seventeen years later, her younger sister, portrayed by Dae, tries to make sense of her sister’s tragic death — and here is where the ensemble approach shines. Separate distinct voices deftly magnify the complex issues of race, class, and gender that come together in the heartrending conclusion. Published by Macmillan Audio Find more audiobook recommendations at audiofilemagazine.com Support for Behind the Mic comes from Blackstone Publishing, publisher of the audiobook of Richard Adams’ classic tale WATERSHIP DOWN. This May Blackstone is celebrating the centenary of the author's birth. Guest Mix: Eric Allen (Gorg-O-Mish/Vancouver).This month started off with a bang for Christopher Lawrence with promos of his new single Tremor out to DJs with early support in from Aly & Fila, Dash Berlin, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Manuel Le Saux and Sean Tyas to name a few! Christopher is also recovering from a massive birthday weekend which included Wet Electric in Orange County and Avalon Hollywood, where he played back to back with label mate and touring partner John 00 Fleming. Now Christopher Lawrence returns to the airwaves for the October episode of Rush Hour. Christopher features new tracks from Andy Paterson & Outflow, John Askew, Paul Webster, Sideform, Saint X, Too Many Artists, Cosmic Station & Bunker Jack, plus a whopping five new tracks by Indecent Noise, one in conjunction with Des McMahon and one with Colin James. That must set a Rush Hour record for the highest number of tracks by a single artist! This months guest mix comes from Eric Allen, who Christopher recently played alongside at Vancouver's legendary afterhours Gorgomish. For most DJs, playing over sixty gigs a year, holding down multiple club residencies, an internationally aired radio show and playing alongside some of the world's biggest DJs including, among others, Gabriel & Dresden, Marco V, Above and Beyond, John O'Callaghan, Sean Tyas, Christopher Lawrence, and that's just to name a few, would be crowning achievements on a strong career of DJ'ing. Eric Allen continues to do all these things and more all with his best years still far ahead of him.Introduced to electronic music at age 15, Eric had his first set of decks shortly thereafter and the rest as they say, is history. Gobbling up all the trance music he could, Eric has lived and breathed the music ever since. Being too young to play in clubs initially, Eric had to fight for his first gigs but nevertheless began to develop a following at local concerts, parties and events with his signature dark, driving and immensely energetic blend of progressive trance, house and technoNow at the ripe old age of 23, Eric has continued to define his genre bending style as he routinely takes people to new heights with his high energy, high tension DJ sets. After a whirlwind year in 2010 which saw him going from a gig-a-month DJ, to one of the most well known and popular DJs in the Vancouver party circuit, Eric has firmly established himself in the west coast electronic scene. With his Friday residency at Vancouver's Gorgomish Nightclub, his internationally aired, monthly radio show "On The Dance Floor" which is broadcast monthly worldwide on AfterhoursFM and a continuous slew of requested guest mixes, club gigs and other events, Eric has his sights firmly set on nothing less than the top. His fans have come to know Eric to always bring a powerful energy to the dance floor and an Eric Allen set has a feeling to it all its own.Now focused on his residencies and expanding his reach outside of Vancouver, as well as the world of original production and composition, Eric Allen is a name to listen for in the future of electronic dance music. His rapid rise to fame on the West coast is truly something to marvel at and there is no telling where it might stop. Look for Eric rocking a club near you!
