Pull up a stool at The Three Broomsticks and join Ev, Irvin, Sophia, and special guest Line Egelund as they delve into the intriguing opening of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince with chapter six, "Draco's Detour"! True to form, our hosts found themselves thoroughly sidetracked by everything from Ollivander's elusive marketing strategy and the burning question of what citation style Hogwarts students are forced to use, before they even got to pondering the security measurements employed by the Ministry and Gringotts. Consequently, despite Sophia's valiant efforts to keep them on track, they only just managed to make it to Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions! Due to their delightful tangents, this chapter had to be split into two parts - so stay tuned for the continuation next time! Grab your butterbeer and get ready for some Half-Blood Prince analysis! This summer San Diego's Old Globe became one of only 10 theaters in America who have produced all of Shakespeare's plays (or 11, depending on how you count it) with their production of Henry VI, parts 1, 2, and 3. Artistic Director Barry Edelstein shares the details of how they tackled staging three rarely seen works with more than 150 characters, and condensed it into two exciting nights of theater. The epic production includes contributions from nearly a thousand San Diegans, many of whom have participated in the Globe's community programs. Edelstein, the Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director of The Old Globe, is one of America's most experienced Shakespeare directors and has staged more than half the canon himself. Before joining the Globe in 2012, he directed the Public Theatre's Shakespeare Initiative and was the artistic director for Classic Stage Company in New York City. He is the author of Thinking Shakespeare about American Shakespearean acting and Bardisms: Shakespeare for All Occasions. Henry 6 runs through September 14 and 15, 2024 at the Globe in San Diego, California. For tickets and more information, visit https://www.theoldglobe.org. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Hello … welcome to The Craft Room Podcast. I'm so glad you're joining me today, because we are talking today about the upcoming Card Maker Success Summit. I've been attending these summits for the past few years, and even though I've been making cards for over 30 years, I still come away from the event having learned something new, and loaded up with inspiration. So imagine my excitement when an invitation to speaker this year landed in my inbox! At the time I was putting finishing touches on the All Occasions box, so when I saw the theme for this summit … Card Maker Success … saying yes was an easy decision. The theme completely aligned with what I was already working on. Now, after months of secret-keeping … I can finally talk about it! So today we're going to cover a few things you might find helpful to know about this summit, including … What even is a card making summit? What does it cost? Who is the summit for? When is it happening? How to get the most out of the Summit experience? What is an All Access Pass? And most importantly, what's in it for you. I'll try to be concise, because it's open for sign-ups now, and there are some important things to share before you go grab your ticket. She wasn't even a romance reader. All of that changed, though, when she wrote Mrs. Nash's Ashes, her debut romance novel. Today, Sarah Adler provides a behind-the-scenes look into her publishing journey, recounting the rollercoaster ride of rejections, what it is like to have a novel go to auction, and what this book taught her about identity that she was surprised to uncover through her characters.Sarah's “only one bed” scene I now count among my favorite romance moments, and we discuss her favorite books that uniquely capture this dilemma and why this has become such a beloved romance trope for readers. What a joy it was to take Kitchen Chat on the road recently to New York's famed Becco and sit down with Lidia Bastianich in celebration of the publication of her sixteenth cookbook! Time with Lidia, a multiple Emmy and James Beard Award winning public television host, author, entrepreneur and fellow member of Les Dames d'Escoffier is always inspiring. Her most recent book is called Lidia : From Our Family Table to Yours published by Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Penguin Random House and features "More than 100 Recipes Made with Love for All Occasions." Lidia's family is at the essential heart of this beautiful book which is a tribute to her Mother Erminia, who passed away two years ago at the age of 100. One of her mother's favorite dishes that Lidia made for her was Eggplant Rollatini. That recipe is in the new cookbook. Lidia and I first met through Barbara Lazaroff at Eataly Chicago during the James Beard Awards in 2015. Eight years later, I had the honor of introducing Lidia onstage as the 2023 recipient of The Andrew Zimmern Discovery Award at The Taste Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

Today, we're setting up Molly Armstrong, a social justice analyst who focuses on child welfare issues. She has received the prestigious Kathryn A McDonald Award in Service in the NYC Family Court and was a Root-Tilden Scholar at NYU School of Law. She enjoys relaxing with a long walk, good book, and a delicious meal– but you probably won't watch her enjoying reality TV, which she thinks is too cringey. She recently loved Michael Lewis's The Premonition and Louise Penny's All the Devils are Here. Mother whose hands never cease to help, because they are moved by the loving kindness that exists in your Immaculate heart. Cast your eyes of compassion upon me, and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life. You know all the pains and sorrows caused by these tangled knots. Mary my mother, I entrust to your loving hands the entire ribbon of my life. In your hands, there is no knot which cannot be undone. Most Holy Mother, pray for Divine assistance to come to my aid. Take this knot, the knot of the coronavirus pandemic, cancer, division…into your maternal hands this day. I beg you to undo it for the Glory of God once and for all in the name of your Divine Son, Jesus Christ, Amen. Learn more at http://www.dinamarie.org/ (www.DinaMarie.org). Mary, Help of Christians Most Holy and Immaculate Virgin, Help of Christians, Mother of the Church, we place ourselves under your motherly protection. We promise to be faithful to our Christian vocation and to work for the greater glory of God and the salvation of our souls and of those entrusted to us. With faith in your intercession, we pray for the Church, for our family and friends, for youth, especially those most in need. You were St. Bosco's teacher. Show us how to imitate his virtues: especially his union with God, his chastity, humility, and poverty, his love for work and his temperance, his goodness and total giving of self to others, his loyalty to the Holy Father and to the Church. Grant, O Mary, Help of Christians, the graces in which we stand in need. May we serve God with fidelity and generosity until death. GUEST: Dan Gray TOPIC: Rice Cake for All Occasions
Controversy, confusion and confidence in God's goodness, from antiquity to present. After being graduated from New York University with a B.A. in philosophy and Phi Beta Kappa, Rabbi Wayne Allen, Ph.D. attended the Jewish Theological Seminary of America where he earned a Masters degree in Rabbinics and went on to receive rabbinic ordination. He served as a congregational rabbi for 35 years, taking on postings in New York City, Los Angeles, and Toronto. The Jewish Theological Seminary conferred an honorary Doctor of Divinity upon him for his years of dedicated service. Rabbi Allen was awarded a Masters degree in Philosophy from York University in Toronto where went on to earn his Ph.D. He has taught Jews and non-Jews of all ages in formal and informal settings including the American Jewish University, the University of Waterloo, the Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto, and Camp Ramah in California. Along with Harvey Haber he wrote Giving Thanks: Graces for All Occasions. Among his interests has been Jewish Law. As the author of Perspectives on Jewish Law and Contemporary Issues and Further Perspectives on Jewish Law and Contemporary Issues as well as editor of the first two volumes of Tomeikh keHalakhah, the responsa collection of the Union for Traditional Judaism, Rabbi Allen gained recognition as an authority on the application of Jewish legal principles in a modern context. He was a frequent panelist for Jewish Values On-line and has appeared on radio and television. Other interests include cantorial music – leading to the publication of his book on The Cantor: From Mishnah to Modernity – and mediating Judaism to inquiring minds, resulting in his book Prescription for an Ailing World. The most comprehensive book on the topic, "Thinking about Good and Evil: Jewish Views from Antiquity to Modernity" traces the most salient Jewish ideas about why innocent people seem to suffer, why evil individuals seem to prosper, and God's role in such matters of (in)justice, from antiquity to the present.
Stand Firm - Stay Strong! Join Dina Marie Hale on this weekly broadcast as she reflects upon the readings for the Sunday Mass. Join us for this reflection with Dina Marie. Resources used in this recording are: The Word Among Us: Daily Meditations for Catholics http://www.wau.org/ (www.wau.org) November 2021 Edition. O glorious Archangel St. Michael, watch over us during life, defend us against the assaults of the demon, assist us especially at the hour of death; obtain for us a favorable judgement, and the happiness of beholding God face to face for endless ages. Amen. Taken from: Prayers for All Occasions 2017 Edition, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington D.C. http://www.nationalshrine.com/ (www.nationalshrine.com). A Prayer Before Reading Sacred Scripture: Lord, inspire us to read your Sacred Scriptures and to meditate upon them day and night. We beg you give us real understanding of what we need, that we in turn may put its precepts into practice. Yet we know that understanding and good intentions are worthless, unless rooted in your graceful love. So we ask that the words of Scripture may also be not just signs on a page, but channels of grace into our hearts. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ your son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. It’s another bonus episode! For #Veganuary I spoke to Lucy Watson (yes, THE Lucy Watson!) all about her vegan lifestyle and being a businesswoman in the spotlight. Lucy – who you may well know from Made in Chelsea – runs several businesses, including a Vegan food company, Feed Me Vegan, and has a new book, Awakenings: A guide to living a vegan lifestyle. She explains how she came to be self-employed, why she loves it, and how a vegan lifestyle helps her mental health. Is it harder to be an entrepreneur when the world - and media – are analysing your every move? Is it easier to be self-employed when you’re well known? She talks about the parallels between the vegan lifestyle journey and freelance journey and how things often change and we need to adapt to the changes self-employed life brings. Lucy started her vegan journey in 2015, having been pescatarian from the age of six. She is a PETA ambassador and animal rights campaigner. Lucy, who formerly featured in the BAFTA winning series, Made in Chelsea, is committed to animal activism. She encompasses this with everything she does including her two bestselling vegan cookbooks, Feed Me Vegan and Feed Me Vegan for All Occasions, as well as her vegan food range Feed Me Vegan.Lucy also runs an ethical & sustainable jewellery range, Creature Jewellery, founded in 2014. Find out more and buy the book via Amazon or all good online bookshops. Find Lucy's site at www.lucywatson.com and follow her @lucywatson

Amanda and Jenn discuss '80s sci-fi, family drama, working class classics, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Libby from OverDrive and Penguin Random House Audio. Questions 1. Hello! This year, I’ve really been interested in seasonal reading. I find this super easy during Halloween but as I prep my TBR pile for November and December, I’m coming up short. I typically read YA and am looking for holiday reads that are inclusive of traditions and people. It seems that the options are fairly small in this regard so I’d be happy with books that just set a cozy/winter scene but also feature diverse characters. Thank you! --Caitlin 2. Hello again ladies! My group, Geek Girls, is doing an all 80s theme in the month of November so we are hoping to pick a scifi or fantasy book from the 80s for the book club. Any suggestions? Only stipulation, they must be available on audio. Happy Halloween! -Jeanne 3. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I just booked my dream trip to Stockholm and Copenhagen! I really want to read something set in these cities, but everything seems to be a crime thriller (great, but not always) or about 120 years old and written by Serious Old Men. Can you please recommend something set in one of these cities that doesn't fall in one of those two camps? For reference, some of my favourites are Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, Saints for All Occasions by J. Courtney Sullivan, and The Great Gatsby. So, if you know of any fun Scandinavian family sagas, please help me!!! Thank you! --Olivia 4. Hi Get Booked! I am a non-binary person and can never find books featuring characters that share that aspect of my identity. I'm not interested in reading books *about* being non-binary, but I would like to read about non-binary characters doing other stuff! I'm open to most genres -- no horror or gory crime stuff please! I'm also not big on biography/memoir, though don't seem to mind it when in graphic novel form or when it reads like fiction. I also can't get through really dense, long books. Thank you! --Frances 5. Hello ladies! I love the podcast and have gotten many great recs for my TBR from you all. After the garbage fire that was the 2016 election, I am feeling the need to better inform myself on some key issues. One that I am particularly interested in is immigration. I have read The Book Of Unknown Americans and Americanah, both of which were life-changing reads. I would like to read some non-fiction on this subject, especially as it relates to American immigration policies. Thanks for all your great work. --Heidi 6. I just discovered your podcast and really enjoyed it, it's great getting all the recommendation, I've added a lot to my TBR pile. I'm looking for some books that are like the prime time soaps from the 80's like Dallas and Dynasty, focusing on family and full of intrigue. Thanks, --Melissa 7. Hi, I recently finished reading North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, which I loved. It made me realise how fed up I am with reading about the English gentry and aristocracy. I am also really bored with books set in London and the Home Counties. I live in a post-industrial town called Chesterfield and want to read about towns like mine and the people that lived in them. I am looking for relatively unknown classics (I have read most of the famous English classics) or historical fiction novels set in towns and cities in the North of England about ordinary, working class people. I am primarily looking for books set in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today's podcast guests, Elsa Blomster and Lena Gunnarson, are the authors of Retrieving for All Occasions, which is, in their own words, the kind of book they would have liked to read when their first dogs were puppies. This book dives into basic training for retrieving and flushing dogs and offers concrete advice for helping readers understand where the exercises lead. Spinglish—the devious dialect of English used by professional spin doctors—is all around us. And the fact is, until you've mastered it, politicians and corporations (not to mention your colleagues and friends) will continue putting things over on you, and generally getting the better of you, every minute of every day—without your even knowing it.However, once you perfect the art of terminological inexactitude, you'll be the one manipulating and one-upping everyone else! And here's the beauty part: Henry Beard and Christopher Cerf, authors of the New York Times semi-bestseller The Official Politically Correct Dictionary and Handbook, have compiled this handy yet astonishingly comprehensive lexicon and translation guide—a fictionary, if you will—to help you do just that. If you want to succeed in business (or politics, sports, the arts, or life in general) without really lying, this is the book for you! (Your results may vary.) Today we were joined by Author and Co-founder of National Lampoon Magazine, Henry Beard. Beard, a great-grandson of Vice President John C. Breckinridge, was born into a well-to-do family and grew up at the Westbury Hotel on East 69th Street in Manhattan. His relationship with his parents was cool, to judge by his quip "I never saw my mother up close."[1] He attended the Taft School, where he was a leader at the humor magazine, and he decided to become a humorous writer after reading Catch-22.[1] He then went to Harvard University (from which he graduated in 1967[2]) and joined its humor magazine, the Harvard Lampoon, which circulated nationally. Much of the credit for the Lampoon's success during the mid-1960s is given to Beard and Douglas Kenney, who was in the class a year after Beard's.[1][3] In 1968, Beard and Kenney wrote the successful parody Bored of the Rings. In 1969, Beard, Kenney and Rob Hoffman became the founding editors of the National Lampoon, which reached a monthly circulation of over 830,000 in 1974 (and the October issue of that year topped a million sales). One of Beard's short stories published there, "The Last Recall", was included in the 1973 Best Detective Stories of the Year.[4] During the early 1970s, Beard was also in the Army Reserve, which he hated.[5] In 1975 the three founders cashed in on a buy-out agreement for National Lampoon; Beard got US$2.8 million and left the magazine.[5][6] After an "unhappy" attempt at screenwriting, he turned to writing humorous books.[7] Those that have reached the New York Times Best Seller list are Sailing: A Sailor's Dictionary (1981, with Roy McKie),[8] Miss Piggy's Guide to Life (1981),[9] Leslie Nielsen's Stupid Little Golf Book (1995, with Leslie Nielsen),[10] French for Cats (1992, with John Boswell),[11] and O.J.'s Legal Pad (1995, with John Boswell and Ron Barrett).[12] Other notable books include Latin for All Occasions (1990), The Official Politically Correct Dictionary and Handbook (1992, with Christopher Cerf), and What's Worrying Gus? (1995, with John Boswell). Personal Finance Cheat Sheet Article: http://www.cheatsheet.com/…/how-schools-can-improve-their-…/ You can listen live by going to www.kpft.org and clicking on the HD3 tab. (https://www.marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=141614801713457&w=2) Even more DJB crypto somehow finds its way into OpenBSD's base system This time it's SipHash (https://131002.net/siphash/), a family of pseudorandom functions that's resistant to hash bucket flooding attacks while still providing good performance After an initial import (http://cvsweb.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/src/sys/crypto/siphash.c?rev=1.1&content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markup) and some clever early usage (https://www.marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=141604896822253&w=2), a few developers agreed that it would be better to use it in a lot more places It will now be used in the filesystem, and the plan is to utilize it to protect all kernel hash functions Some other places (http://www.bsdnow.tv/episodes/2013_12_18-cryptocrystalline) that Bernstein's work can be found in OpenBSD include the ChaCha20-Poly1305 authenticated stream cipher and Curve25519 KEX used in (https://www.freebsd.org/releases/10.1R/announce.html) FreeBSD's release engineering team (http://www.bsdnow.tv/episodes/2013-09-11_engineering_powder_kegs) likes to troll us by uploading new versions just a few hours after we finish recording an episode The first maintenance update for the 10.x branch is out, improving upon a lot of things found in 10.0-RELEASE The vt driver was merged from -CURRENT and can now be enabled with a loader.conf switch (and can even be used on a PlayStation 3) Bhyve has gotten quite a lot of fixes and improvements from its initial debut in 10.0, including boot support for ZFS Lots of new ARM hardware is supported now, including SMP support for most of them A new kernel selection menu was added to the loader, so you can switch between newer and older kernels at boot time 10.1 is the first to support UEFI booting on amd64, which also has serial console support now Lots of third party software (OpenSSH, OpenSSL, Unbound..) and drivers have gotten updates to newer versions It's a worthy update from 10.0, or a good time to try the 10.x branch if you were avoiding the first .0 release, so grab an ISO (http://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ISO-IMAGES-amd64/10.1/) or upgrade (https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=freebsd-update) today Check the detailed release notes (https://www.freebsd.org/releases/10.1R/relnotes.html) for more information on all the changes Also take a look at some of the known problems (https://www.freebsd.org/releases/10.1R/errata.html#open-issues) to see if (https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/segmentation-fault-while-upgrading-from-10-0-release-to-10-1-release.48977/) you'll (https://www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/2mmzzy/101release_restart_problems_anyone/) by any of them PC-BSD was also updated accordingly (http://wiki.pcbsd.org/index.php/What%27s_New/10.1) with some of their own unique features and changes *** arc4random - Randomization for All Occasions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWmLWx8ut20) Theo de Raadt gave an updated version of his EuroBSDCon presentation at Hackfest 2014 in Quebec The presentation is mainly about OpenBSD's arc4random function, and outlines the overall poor state of randomization in the 90s and how it has evolved in OpenBSD over time It begins with some interesting history on OpenBSD and how it became a security-focused OS - in 1996, their syslogd got broken into and "suddenly we became interested in security" The talk also touches on how low-level changes can shake up the software ecosystem and third party packages that everyone uses There's some funny history on the name of the function (being called arc4random despite not using RC4 anymore) and an overall status update on various platforms' usage of it Very detailed and informative presentation, and the slides can be found here (http://www.openbsd.org/papers/hackfest2014-arc4random/index.html) A great quote from the beginning: "We consider ourselves a community of (probably rather strange) people who work on software specifically for the purpose of trying to make it better. We take a 'whole-systems' approach: trying to change everything in the ecosystem that's under our control, trying to see if we can make it better. We gain a lot of strength by being able to throw backwards compatibility out the window. So that means that we're able to do research and the minute that we decide that something isn't right, we'll design an alternative for it and push it in. And if it ends up breaking everybody's machines from the previous stage to the next stage, that's fine because we'll end up in a happier place." *** Interview - Justin Cormack - justin@netbsd.org (mailto:justin@netbsd.org) / @justincormack (https://twitter.com/justincormack) NetBSD on Xen, rump kernels, various topics News Roundup The FreeBSD foundation's biggest donation (http://freebsdfoundation.blogspot.com/2014/11/freebsd-foundation-announces-generous.html) The FreeBSD foundation has a new blog post about the largest donation they've ever gotten From the CEO of WhatsApp comes a whopping one million dollars in a single donation It also has some comments from the donor about why they use BSD and why it's important to give back Be sure to donate to the foundation of whatever BSD you use when you can - every little bit helps, especially for OpenBSD (http://www.openbsd.org/donations.html), NetBSD (https://www.netbsd.org/donations/) and DragonFly (http://www.dragonflybsd.org/donations/) who don't have huge companies supporting them regularly like FreeBSD does *** OpenZFS Dev Summit 2014 videos (http://open-zfs.org/wiki/OpenZFS_Developer_Summit) Videos from the recent OpenZFS developer summit are being uploaded, with speakers from different represented platforms and companies Matt Ahrens (http://www.bsdnow.tv/episodes/2014_05_14-bsdcanned_goods), opening keynote (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnTzbisLYzg) Raphael Carvalho, Platform Overview: ZFS on OSv (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJLOBLSRoHE) Brian Behlendorf, Platform Overview: ZFS on Linux (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MVOpMNV7LY) Prakash Surya, Platform Overview: illumos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtlGt3ag0o0) Xin Li, Platform Overview: FreeBSD (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO0x5_3A1X4) All platforms, Group Q&A Session (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4UlT0RmSCc) Dave Pacheco, Manta (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEoCMpdB8WU) Saso Kiselkov, Compression (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZF92taa_us) George Wilson (http://www.bsdnow.tv/episodes/2013_12_04-zettabytes_for_days), Performance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deJc0EMKrM4) Tim Feldman, Host-Aware SMR (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1yqjV8qemU) Pavel Zakharov, Fast File Cloning (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4c4gsLi1LI) The audio is pretty poor (https://twitter.com/OpenZFS/status/534005125853888512) on all of them unfortunately *** BSDTalk 248 (http://bsdtalk.blogspot.com/2014/11/bsdtalk248-dragonflybsd-with-matthew.html) Our friend Will Backman is still busy getting BSD interviews as well This time he sits down with Matthew Dillon, the lead developer of DragonFly BSD We've never had Dillon on the show, so you'll definitely want to give this one a listen They mainly discuss all the big changes coming in DragonFly's upcoming 4.0 release *** MeetBSD 2014 videos (https://www.meetbsd.com/) The presentations from this year's MeetBSD conference are starting to appear online as well Kirk McKusick (http://www.bsdnow.tv/episodes/2013-10-02_stacks_of_cache), A Narrative History of BSD (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEEr6dT-4uQ) Jordan Hubbard (http://www.bsdnow.tv/episodes/2013_11_27-bridging_the_gap), FreeBSD: The Next 10 Years (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mri66Uz6-8Y) Brendan Gregg, Performance Analysis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvKMptfXtdo) The slides can be found here (https://www.meetbsd.com/agenda/) *** Feedback/Questions Dominik writes in (http://slexy.org/view/s20PXjp55N) Steven writes in (http://slexy.org/view/s2LwEYT3bA) Florian writes in (http://slexy.org/view/s2ubK8vQVt) Richard writes in (http://slexy.org/view/s216Eq8nFG) Kevin writes in (http://slexy.org/view/s21D2ugDUy) *** Mailing List Gold Contributing without code (https://www.marc.info/?t=141600819500004&r=1&w=2) Compression isn't a CRIME (https://lists.mindrot.org/pipermail/openssh-unix-dev/2014-November/033176.html) Securing web browsers (https://www.marc.info/?t=141616714600001&r=1&w=2) ***
