FOLLOW UP: VW CONSIDERS RADICAL COST SAVING PLANSInformation has come out as to the extent that Volkswagen Group are considering how to save the $4 billion they state they need to. This includes closing up to three German plants, reducing wages, reducing bonuses and more. Unions have reacted angrily whilst VW has not commented on the claims. To find out more, click this Reuters link here. FOLLOW UP: JLR STILL HAVING REPAIR ISSUESA year ago the CEO of JLR, Adrian Mardell, apologised for how long it was taking to repair their customer's vehicles. This situation is still not resolved. Problems with their supply chain, which not all are their fault, as well as the supply hub they switched to has meant that around 10,000 customer cars are off the road. RADFORD MOTORS FILES FOR CHAPTER 11 BANKRUPTCYThe car company co-founded by Jenson Button, Ant Antsted and Dan Bednarski, to build a low volume supercar based on a modern interpretation of the Lotus Type 62, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US. RIVIAN AND BOSCH TAKE EACH OTHER TO COURT Bosch has sued Rivian for breach of contract, which caused Rivian to counter sue. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, Jan. 7  Get free seeds and compete in the WV Garden Challenge. From water trails to four-wheeling, outdoor recreation abounds in the Advantage Valley. And a historic property in Ansted has links to explorer William Clark…on today's daily304. #1 – From WBOY – Once again, the “Grow This: West Virginia Garden Challenge” is sending out free seeds to help West Virginians start their own garden, but this year's challenge has some added competition. According to the West Virginia University Extension Grow This organization, last year's challenge, which distributed seeds to 25,000 West Virginians, was “a practice round for 2024.” This year, they're giving out seeds for Jimmy Nardello peppers, red Russian kale and scarlet nantes carrots. Individuals, families and groups in West Virginia can sign up to get free seeds and to join a state-wide competition—county versus county.  Growers can now join the challenge by filling out a survey, and once they get their seeds in April, they can earn points for their country by completing challenges. Read more: https://www.wboy.com/wv-outdoors/sign-up-for-free-seeds-through-2024-grow-this-wv-garden-challenge/ #2 – From LIVABILITY.COM –  Outdoor recreation in West Virginia, specifically in the Advantage Valley between Charleston and Huntington, is easy to find – just follow the trail. Whether it's hiking, paddling, horseback riding or zooming around in an all-terrain vehicle, there is a well-maintained pathway to accommodate all manner of activities. Along the way, residents and visitors can soak in the magnificent mountain landscapes and meet plenty of other outdoor enthusiasts who are enjoying the same thing. “Our region is a growing outdoor recreation mecca for people to explore and discover,” says Bill Currey, chairman and founder of the Coal River Group, which oversees the 88-mile Coal River Water Trail. “We have everything that you would want in terms of both land and water trails.” Other recreational opportunities include the Hatfield McCoy Trails, an extensive network of off-roading trails in southern West Virginia. Just north of Charleston lies the Elk River Trail, which offers hiking and biking as well as paddling along the adjacent Elk River.  Visit www.wvtourism.com for more recreational opportunities in Almost Heaven and start planning your getaway today. Read more: https://livability.com/wv/charleston/experiences-adventures/advantage-valley-an-outdoor-lovers-paradise/   #3 – From WV EXPLORER – Historians investigating the history of a landmark tavern in southern West Virginia have uncovered evidence that explorer William Clark, of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, lodged there in the 1820s. Clark's presence at the former Tyree Tavern in Ansted was unknown until a diary entry was recently uncovered in the archives of the Lewis and Clark Trust. “It is really exciting to find an actual document—in William Clark's own hand!—that established his stop at the tavern in his 1817-1820 travel diary,” said Pamela Webster-Walsh who co-owns the property with her sister Laura Moore. Believed to have been established as a tavern in the very early 1800s, the hewn-timber structure is one of the oldest in the southern state. It was a stagecoach stop for travelers crossing the Appalachian Mountains, and during the Civil War, it served as a headquarters for both northern and southern armies. Webster-Walsh says she and Moore welcome all possible information on the history of the tavern. Correspondence through email should be directed to walshpw116@gmail.com. A Facebook page has also been established at Tyree Tavern - Past & Present. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, April 2  Did you know you can camp for free within the New River Gorge National Park?...a new airline at Yeager will offer budget flights to Orlando and “the other” Charleston…and an African-American arts academy hosts summer camp for teens…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE GAZETTE-MAIL –  “It's a pretty place,” said first-time New River Gorge National Park and Preserve camper Sharon Simpson as she relaxed on a chair at her campsite in the park's Glade Creek Campground. “The only sounds you hear are from the river or a passing train,” Simpson said. “When I walked to the creek to take some pictures, a deer walked right past me.” Unlike most campgrounds in other national parks, where campers are charged fees averaging about $20 per night, all eight campgrounds found within the New River National Park and Preserve are free and open year round. They're rated primitive--meaning they lack drinking water, bathhouses, or hookups for power and other utilities--but what they lack in amenities are more than made up for with the area's natural beauty and proximity to recreation like fishing and hiking.  Read more: https://www.wvgazettemail.com/news/new-river-gorges-no-fee-campgrounds-a-rarity-among-national-parks/article_39387025-9380-5371-a9db-46fa91db3cc2.html   #2 – From GOVERNOR.WV.GOV –  Gov. Jim Justice has announced a partnership with the successful new low cost carrier Breeze Airways to connect West Virginia International Yeager Airport (CRW) with at least five cities over the next two years.  New nonstop flights to Orlando, Florida (MCO) and Charleston, South Carolina (CHS) will begin May 31, 2023. The new routes are now on sale at introductory fares of $59 and $49, respectively, one way. At least three more destinations, including New York City, are slated to be added over the next 24 months.  This innovative partnership between the state, Kanawha County, and the City of Charleston comes after years of decline in available destinations from smaller airports around the country, including West Virginia International Yeager Airport. The new flights will more than double air connectivity to West Virginia's capital. Breeze was launched in 2021 by JetBlue founder and former CEO David Neeleman with a mission to fill a key gap in America's air-travel offerings: efficient, affordable, direct flights between secondary airports, bypassing hubs for shorter travel times. It was recently named one of the best domestic airlines in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure.  Read more: https://governor.wv.gov/News/press-releases/2023/Pages/Gov.-Justice-announces-historic-airline-partnership.aspx   #3 – From BLACK BY GOD –  The Norman Jordan African American Arts & Heritage Academy is planning its 2023 Summer Youth Arts & Heritage Academy.   NJAAAHA is an annual summer arts program that offers teenagers between the ages of 12-18 concentrated study in their chosen artistic discipline. The program provides classes in instrumental and vocal music, theater, dance, visual arts, creative writing (including hip-hop and basic songwriting), and arts technology. The workshops are supplemented with historical and cultural knowledge associated with the students' chosen art form, with guest performers, field trips and more.  Norman Jordan of Ansted, WV was the president and chief financial officer of the NJAAA&HA until his passing in 2015. Jordan was one of the leading African-American poets of West Virginia and the Black Arts Movement.  This year's academy will meet at West Virginia State University the week of July 10-15. This unit of composite sonic constituency focuses on the "Elements of Damage" isolate. The designation of "damage" for this isolate may depend in part upon the cooperation of visual damage cues, and feedback loops between the sound and the visual to reinforce a "damage" contract (which may be broken or strengthened in a number of ways, by either partner or by other arriving parties). Even if this sonic isolate retains an association with damage based upon sonic elements only, the nature of the damage may be perceived differently without the corroboration of visual damage to help define intensity and duration of damage.

Short form of the longer update, both of which feature more images by Ansted Moss. This video poam explores how war and other physically, emotionally, and psychologically turbulent situations affect attempts to do laundry in an otherwise comfortable urban location. The update became necessary when external hard drive failure caused the loss of some of the source files. This piece is the outcome of salvage, replacement, and reinvention. Thank you, Evie, for asking for a poam when I was doing laundry. Thank you, Ansted for all the dirty socks and for images of me draped with laundry. The print poam may be read at mipoesias.com.

This video poam is an unintended collaboration that in the lack of intention becomes a lattice itself, a community of interactions from multiple locations intersecting on a number of levels (or lattices). The compatibility of KC's video, and the spoken language with Ansted's images seems designed rather than incidental, yet it wasn't until I had these separate components for the Gallery exhibit component of "Pleasurable Complexity" Limited Fork poetry event that I realized the benefit of seeing the separate pieces together, allowing them to speak a shared language in addition to the multiple levels of saying in their separate languages. Two themes of the "Pleasurable Complexity" Limited Fork poetry event were "place value" and "implications of the lattice," with "implications of the lattice" contained in notions of "place value," and notions of "place value" contained in "implications of the lattice." More "Pleasurable Complexity" materials are available from the Limited Fork podcast. --Thylias Moss

This visual poam is a companion to the "Pleasurable Complexity" Limited Fork poetry event that considered notions of place value and implications of the lattice. Some of Ansted's lattice looking images were part of a larger lattice or woven piece featuring the poam "Shadowbox Suite" by KC Trommer. This larger piece, "Latticed Shadowbox Suite," is available in the Limited Fork Video Anthology podcast and in the Limited Fork podcast. Other pieces related to the "Pleasurable Complexity" are also available in the Limited Fork podcast. Implications and interactions extend beyond the separate poams; such is the nature of resonance available for notice and further interaction and transformation.

This movie poam from May 2005 explores what led me to write the narrative-in-verse SLAVE MOTH when my son, the composer of the soundtrack for this short piece, was in sixth grade at a grade-six-through-twelve school. During a meeting, some parents wanted to ban a required ninth-grade ancestry assignment that was embarrassing, humiliating, and demeaning for disclosing that their sons could trace their ancestry no further than slavery. Right away, I realized the need for other models of slavery so that the shame being experienced could be attached to a broader, and I felt, likely more accurate context, one more able to embrace the range of possibilities of circumstances during slavery which, even if owners were benevolent, was unacceptable because ownership of human beings was unacceptable. Part of the horror of slavery is that benign gestures might make the peculiar institution seem acceptable, a good indignity. Imagination can make an incredible difference, and in fact made an incredibly negative difference for those mothers unable to imagine a plausible, less obvious layer of the history so embarrassing for their sons that they would prefer not to explore the rich offerings of a past that their ancestors obviously survived no matter what horrors were encountered. How awful that they were so willing to deny the testimony that survival can be. How awful that they could construct for themselves only constricted, generic, and simplified images of slaves. I remain impressed and inspired by survival. There are layers of experience in SLAVE MOTH, and the Perry household is a complex and dynamic system of existence, relationships stabilizing and destabilizing as alliances shift and feelings are poorly suppressed; there are conflicting understandings of responsibilities to self and to others, and power shifts according to what is stabilizing and what is destabilizing at any given moment. The fact that power shifts makes it difficult for any one person to wield it well or consistently. SLAVE MOTH offers access to more of the layers of humanity that some mothers in 2002 were unable to allocate to enslaved persons. I too spoke at the meeting; on my way out I informed the group advocating abolition of the genealogy assignment that my son, only in sixth grade that year, had had no trouble completing his assignment to write an ancestry poem. I commented that Ansted had traced his ancestry all the way back to the big bang, and considered himself a descendant of stardust. The text of his poem is part of "Project Genealogy," and is also offered here: Ancestry Poem We all came from a single cell a vast time ago specks coming to life in the oceans of the planets and in space everyone of us evolved from star dust into the form we take on now looking at space through telescopes at the next generation of star dust that will breathe. --Ansted Moss, 22 October 2002.
