“Are the kids okay?” Mental health in children and teens has been at the forefront of topics for concern, especially since the pandemic. Ross Szabo discusses the importance of mental health education in schools, and how we can normalize talking about it in our everyday conversations.          This podcast is made possible by generous funding from BAE Systems, Inc. To learn more, visit https://www.baesystems.com/en-us/home.   Audio mixing by Concentus Media, Inc., Temple, Texas.   Show Notes: Resources: https://humanpowerproject.com/   About Ross Szabo Talking about emotions can be a challenge, but Ross's brutally honest, relatable and humorous approach puts audiences at ease as they confront a difficult topic. When Ross was a freshman in college, everything on the surface seemed to be fine. He was making friends, getting good grades and had a fun social life. However, no one could have imagined how many emotions he was suppressing. Ross was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 16, was hospitalized for attempting to take his own life during his senior year of high school, and like so many other freshman, just wanted to fit in. He tried to hide what he was feeling to convince everyone that everything was ok, but that can only last for so long. Ross's story resonates with the millions of college students who are putting on a happy face to hide their true emotions. Ross uses tasteful humor and insights to help participants understand common mental health conditions and individual differences. He also covers warning signs that students can look for in their friends and peers, as well as resources that can provide guidance in these sensitive situations. Ross is NOW the CEO of the Human Power Project. He is an award-winning mental health speaker, writer, trainer and Returned Peace Corps Volunteer. Ross has spoken to more than 1 million students about the importance of mental health and provided a positive example to empower them to seek help. He received the 2010 Didi Hirsch Removing the Stigma Leadership Award, 2012 Changing Minds Award and had his advocacy work entered into the Congressional Record. He is the co-author of Behind Happy Faces; Taking Charge of Your Mental Health and a blogger for The Huffington Post.

Nobody will innovate or take risks until a community that is safe has been built. Teaching is professional yet at the same time deeply personal. It's a holistic profession. Building relationships creates a community. Building report creates an institution. We all want to work in communities. The light bulb moment is the click moment when it comes to building relationships. It's important that you pause and take time to let people know that you see, hear, and know them. Leaders need to model relationship building for their teachers. It's important to help teachers start improving by focusing on their strengths and building from there. Just as we were starting to see an end to a global pandemic, Russia invades Ukraine and the world goes into crisis mode. The refugee crisis is growing at the Ukraine/Poland border. Beautiful, picturesque Ukrainian cities have now turned into ruins. Russia is threatening to cut oil supplies in Europe. Gas prices are rising past $4.15 per gallon in the United States. In this episode, Alexanderia Haidara, host of Global Take Podcast, talks with a foreign policy expert, Nola Haynes, and former Peace Corp Volunteer to Ukraine, Violet Esipila. They dive deep into the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and its impact on the black community both in America and abroad. As NATO, the European Union, and the United States scramble to de-escalate tensions in the region and end the war, what role will Africa play in the new global world order? The U.S. Congress shored up 1.5 trillion for defense and non-defense discretionary spending and roughly 12 billion to help Ukraine respond to Russia's invasion, yet critical criminal justice, and civil rights legislation remain in limbo. The outpour of African immigrants fighting to leave Ukraine but were discriminated against at the Polish/Ukraine border struck a nerve with Black America. Join our discussion online with Global Take! But you can repurpose content  Try to learn as much as you can about each social media channel.80% of things you post on social media should be all about adding value to your viewers; the remaining 20% is for asking something back. If we're asking someone to do something, let's think first about what's in it for them. “Nobody wants a newsletter. Understanding The School To Deportation Pipeline in the U.S. with Juhi Verma, Patricia Maloney, and Duke Austin

As the focus on immigrant apprehension of adults, minors, and families has dramatically increased under the 45th administration, the Pew Research Center estimates at least 725,000 students in grades K–12 are undocumented in the U.S. As communities become more and more polarized along socio-political identities we see more reactionary, alt-right, anti-immigrant ideologies shaping political discourse — which is why today’s conversation with sociologists and researchers Dr. SaunJuhi Verma, Dr. Patricia Maloney, and Dr. Duke W. Austin is so important. Much like the school-to-prison pipeline (before schools closed for the COVID-19 pandemic), more undocumented students were put in vulnerable positions as some disciplinary protocols increasingly involved police officers, or school resource officers (SROs), when combined with stricter immigration enforcement. To better understand the history and mechanisms behind the School-to-Deportation Pipeline I spoke with sociologists and researchers Dr. SaunJuhi Verma, Dr. Patricia Maloney, and Dr. Duke W. Austin who have dedicated years of research to the nuances and complexities of immigrant students lives, the obstacles they face, and strategies for the eventual end of the deportation of students. Here’s a little about each of our guests: Dr. SaunJuhi Verma is a scholar of immigration policy, transnational migration, and race/settler colonialism. Her work focuses upon emerging technologies of migrant surveillance for regulating rights to mobility. Three significant research lines reflect the breadth of her work, (1) settler colonialism as a framework for evaluations of immigration policy, (2) the school to deportation pipeline, and (3) migrant surveillance technologies adopted by nation-states. These research streams have generated a forthcoming book manuscript Captive Labor, a second book manuscript Schooling Exclusion with New York University Press, a third research project funded by the Fulbright Global Fellowship, and countless other refereed article publications in journals such as ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences, Political Power and Social Theory, Amerasia Journal, and Urban Education. Through her contributions, Dr. Verma strives to bridge the gap between scholarly production and community activism. Dr. Patricia Maloney specializes in sociology of education, sociological theory, program assessment, and qualitative methods. Recently, she has been conducting an inquiry into how different types of charter schools perform character education in America. This is in conjunction with a larger research project out of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia examining how multiple different school sectors perform character education. Dr. Maloney also studies Teach For America and how beginning teachers acculturate to their local school environments. During her time in multiple (Teach For America and non-Teach For America) schools, teachers also began to tell her about how adults cheat on standardized exams. This research is new and forthcoming. Dr. Duke Austin believes that quality teaching and learning fosters intellectual empowerment and social justice. Through learner-centered pedagogy, experiential education, and educating for a diverse world, he empowers his students to apply critical thinking skills to the world around them and to see the relevance of education in their own lives. In doing so, he prepares his students to become civic leaders who actively contribute to society in intelligent and effective ways. Dr. Austin is a strong advocate for peace and justice. To that end, his teaching and research focus on race, gender, immigration, environmental justice, community engagement, and social justice pedagogy. When conducting research, he utilizes both qualitative and quantitative methods. His published work includes a co-edited volume on ethnographic research, titled Bringing Fieldwork Back In (ANNALS 2012), and he is currently completing a co-edited book on the unintended impact of white supremacy on white Americans. In addition to serving as an Associate Professor at Cal State, East Bay, Dr. Austin has an appointment as a Senior Fellow with the Urban Ethnography Project at Yale University. Before entering academia, he worked as a Lead Wilderness Instructor for Outward Bound in Florida, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, a Supervisor of the Children's Ski School in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and the Camp Director at Quarterman Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. He is also a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, having served as a Teacher Trainer in Paraguay. Episode 58: Moroccan and Ottoman Contributions to 18th c. Diplomatic Developments   Throughout the eighteenth century, the Ottoman and Russian Empires were at war. However, a decisive victory by the Russian Empire helped them assert their influence over both Crimea and the Mediterranean. The Ottomans, wanting to counteract this assumption of power fought to prevent Russian ships from entering through the Straits of Gibraltar, seeking assistance from the Moroccan king Sidi Muhammed Ben Abdallah. In this episode, Peter Kitlas, Ph.D. Candidate at the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University, discusses the vibrant developments in diplomatic activity between Morocco and the Ottoman Empire throughout the eighteenth century. The increased exchange of diplomats between these two non-European powers demonstrates how Morocco and the Ottoman Empire responded to changes in international relations during this time period while still maintaining a particular diplomatic ethos. Focusing on some entertaining anecdotes about diplomats and their adventures, Peter takes us through the travelogues (riḥla and sefaretname) of several Moroccan and Ottoman diplomats to demonstrate how they navigated the changing field of international relations. Here, Peter highlights that diplomatic history should deal just as much with developments in bureaucracy and statecraft as it does with its foundational standards and practices governed by a particular diplomatic mentality. Focusing on both actions and the governing influences behind those actions will help bring Morocco and the Ottoman Empire into broader conversations about diplomacy during this time period and might even help to uncover outlying developments in the European theater that have not fit into the particular ethos of a state-craft focused, bureaucratic teleology. Peter Kitlas is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University  He is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer from Morocco and holds an M.A. from the University of Michigan. He research in Morocco, Turkey, Gibraltar, and Dubrovnik has been funded by the Social Science Research Council and the Department of Education through the Fulbright-Hays Commission. This Podcast was recorded on 10 January at the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIM), in Tangier, Morocco. TALIM Resident Director John Davison moderated the discussion. The election of Donald Trump for President of the United States has already had affected the countries where Peace Corps volunteers serve, and Trump will very soon be setting policy at Peace Corps itself. Trump’s divisive rhetoric and much of his proposed agenda directly contradict the mission of the Peace Corps. Despite this, some returned volunteers supported Trump. Others initially opposed Trump’s statements, only to reverse course after the election. The National Peace Corps Association, for instance, recently applied to march in the inaugural parade for President-Elect Trump on January 20th. There was a time when Returned Peace Corps Volunteers did not so easily acquiesce to power. Before the National Peace Corps Association there was the Committee of Returned Volunteers (CRV). It was the first national Peace Corps alumni organization, and it was specifically created to oppose U.S. foreign policy. The committee’s key opposition came on May 8th 1970. Several CRV members walked into Peace Corps Headquarters in Washington D.C., kicked the staff out of the building, and hung a Vietcong flag out of the window in protest of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. They occupied the office for two days. Elaine Fuller was one of the returned volunteers who occupied Peace Corps headquarters in 1970. She tells her story in this episode of the Posh Corps podcast. In addition, two returned volunteers on opposite sides of the political spectrum discuss their reactions to the election of Donald Trump.

Nancy Tongue, who served in Chile from 1980 to 1982, struggled to get serious illness covered through the Federal Employees Compensation Act (FECA). FECA, which is administered by the Department of Labor, is the only way for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers to get compensation for their service-related medical issues. FECA is so dysfunctional, that many Returned Peace Corps Volunteers with serious post-service medical conditions are trapped in a medical limbo, unable to get the treatments they need, and unable to work due to illness. Nancy Tongue started a support group for these volunteers called Health Justice for Peace Corps Volunteers.
