Travels With Randy Summer Of '26 Episode 1 is here! Up The West Coast On Hwy 1 West Coast Travel and Real Estate Bubba and Randy discussed Randy's recent travels along the West Coast after completing a 17-podcast series about Route 66. They compared weather patterns between different regions, with Randy noting the benefits of spring weather in Washington compared to tornado season in the Midwest. The conversation also covered real estate price increases in California, with Randy sharing how his childhood home in Placentia appreciated from $37,000 in 1967 to $1.3 million currently, and they discussed future housing needs as they approach retirement age. US Road Trip Discussion Bubba and Randy discussed Randy's recent road trip across the United States, including his journey from Route 66 to California and his decision to take the scenic coastal route along Highway 1. They talked about the significant difference in gas prices between California and other states, with Randy noting prices reached $7.50 per gallon in some areas of California. Randy shared interesting facts about Highway 101 being created on the same day as Route 66's centennial, making it one of only a few highways still celebrated from that original group of over 180 numbered highways. Recent Road Trip and Adventures Randy shared details about his recent road trip, including a golf game where he lost by one stroke due to a poor final hole performance. He described visiting Albuquerque and having dinner with his girlfriend Cindy in California for her 60th birthday. The conversation also covered Randy's car brake issues, which required a $1,300 repair after hearing squeaking noises, and his enjoyment of driving along Highway 1 and Highway 101, particularly appreciating the scenic ocean views during early morning drives. Road Trip from Oxnard to Lompoc Randy described a road trip from Oxnard to Lompoc, explaining the route options along highways 1 and 101, and shared details about visiting Channel Islands National Park and Hearst Castle. He noted challenges with morning fog during the trip and recommended allocating time for both Channel Islands and Hearst Castle visits. The conversation ended with a discussion about national parks, particularly questioning how some sites like Gateway Arch and New River Gorge became national parks. National Park Designation Discussion Randy and Bubba discussed the process of national park designations, with Randy expressing disappointment about Indiana Dunes and speculating that Channel Islands became a national park due to favors or political reasons. They discussed the challenges with Route 66, with Randy advocating for it to be managed as a national park or byway to ensure consistent signage and routing. The conversation shifted to Randy's current trip following Highway 1 in California, including his visit to Hearst Castle, and they briefly discussed the location's history and the challenges of accessing Big Sur due to road damage. TV Pilot Script Discussion Randy shared details about a TV pilot script he wrote during an internship at MTM, inspired by the Newhart show and set at Big Sur Inn, which he struggled to get produced despite trying to interest Lindsey Wagner's agent. He reflected on how persistence and timing rather than overnight success determine career outcomes, particularly noting how AI tools would have significantly changed his college film production experience. The conversation concluded with Bubba sharing a personal connection to the Little River Inn in Mendocino, which Randy had previously visited and planned to post photos of later that week. Highway 1 Driving Discussion Bubba and Randy discussed driving on Highway 1, comparing the experience of driving versus being a passenger due to the road's challenging hairpin turns and lack of guardrails. Randy shared a story about encountering aggressive motorcycle riders on the same road, leading to an accident with another motorist. They also discussed the scenic route from San Luis Obispo to San Francisco, including the view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the option to visit Alcatraz Island. Alcatraz and Infrastructure Discussions Bubba and Randy discussed their visits to Alcatraz in San Francisco, sharing memories of the self-guided tours and the historical context of the island. They also talked about the constant maintenance required for the Golden Gate Bridge and compared it to other infrastructure projects. The conversation shifted to challenges in modern construction, particularly the difficulties in building data centers and bullet trains, and they briefly discussed the potential for building data centers in space. Space Data Center Discussion Bubba and Randy discussed the benefits of placing data centers in space, particularly on the moon, due to reduced cooling requirements and other advantages. They reflected on the rapid pace of technological advancement, comparing it to historical innovations like the personal computer and internet, and highlighted how AI technologies like ChatGPT are being adopted quickly and are already integral to daily workflows, as demonstrated by Randy's use of AI in photo processing. They also noted that while technological change can be unsettling, especially regarding job impacts, the current pace of innovation is unprecedented and continues to evolve rapidly. AI Tools for Work Efficiency Randy and Bubba discussed their experiences using AI tools like Gemini and ChatGPT to improve efficiency in their work. Randy shared how he uses Gemini to proofread and fact-check his social media posts, while Bubba described how he leverages AI to manage his book business, including analyzing inventory and making purchasing decisions. They also discussed the challenges some people face when retiring early, noting that staying mentally and socially active is important for overall well-being. Travel Content Planning Discussion Randy and Bubba discussed their upcoming travel content plans, with Randy planning to visit San Francisco and Alcatraz next week before covering northern California up to the Oregon border. They agreed to continue their weekly podcast discussions throughout the summer, focusing on travel topics including the Oregon coast and Northern California's wine regions. Bubba mentioned their Facebook page has grown to 37,000 followers and suggested exploring Hearst Castle during future West Coast trips. SO. MANY. This week on The Running Mullet… What happens when you mix trail runners, a moving train, and a little Appalachian magic? You get the legendary Highball to Thurmond — one of the most unique races in the area. Set deep in the New River Gorge of West Virginia, runners can choose from multiple distances — from a shorter scenic 50k to rugged 50 mile run, ruck, and relay distances that wind through historic rail towns, forested trails, crushed gravel, and relentless Appalachian climbs. But no matter the distance, the mission stays the same: Beat the train. Participants race toward Thurmond while the Amtrak line rolls alongside the gorge below. Finish before the train arrives, and you've officially outrun it. Then, after the suffering is over, runners climb aboard for one of the coolest post-race traditions anywhere — riding the train back to the start with a full car of exhausted trail runners swapping stories and survival tales. This week, we're breaking down the course, the strategy, the train logistics, and why this race has become such a great event for trail runners across the region. Appalachian grit, rail-town history, and a finish line unlike anything else — this week on The Running Mullet.

Day Two back at home didn't feel any more organized to me than Day One, but it was more like a regular show than the past month's worth have been, anyway. I'll take it! The show being as much for me as it is for you, I found myself playing catch-up on the air with the background of the Virginia redistricting situation. We've all heard what happened in the Virginia Supreme Court, but… did it make sense? Would Dems really not be fighting back with all they had? And what did they have? There was at least one pretty seriously hardball suggestion floated, but it seemed to unnerve them, or worry them that Republicans would take revenge. Only they already have. But maybe it's not too let for Dems to do nothing, but in a good way. We also spent a moment catching up on the travelogue portion of the show. We were still on the road over the weekend, you know, making quick visits to two additional National Parks on the way home: New River Gorge and Shenandoah. Which was as good a reminder as any that all public lands–not just the famous or even lesser-known National Parks–are under attack and in need of your defense. Meanwhile, the collapse of American international leadership continues apace. The hantavirus outbreak is the first time in decades that the world couldn't turn to American leadership in matters of disease control and public health, thanks to Trump. But you and I (and the rest of the world) know the problem runs much, much deeper than that. In a classic sign of imperial decay, America has turned pirate. And Talk Like a Pirate Day isn't until September! Meanwhile, as Trump heads to China, they already consider American decline an open secret. I'm sure this visit will go great.

Fayetteville, West Virginia sits on the edge of the New River Gorge, a small Appalachian town now known as a gateway to one of America's newest national parks. In a world of shifting sands, where kids are nudged toward algorithms, apps, and endless activities, S. D. Smith returns to the 1000 Hours Outside Podcast to talk about giving our children something sturdier to stand on. Ginny and Sam share stories of real-life hospitality, hikes in West Virginia, rainbows over the New River Gorge, and the way shared adventures and shared stories bind families together. From the Green Ember universe to his newest book Helmer and the Dragon Tomb, Sam describes his mission to offer “new stories with an old soul” that root kids in courage, virtue, and hope—stories that still matter fifty years after we're gone. Together they wrestle with the pressure modern parents feel: rising anxiety about the future, the lure of AI shortcuts, and the constant competition for our kids' attention. Sam and Ginny make a compelling case that reading and writing are not outdated school tasks, but deeply human practices that shape a child's inner world, imagination, and even their sense of calling. You'll hear practical ideas for “tricksy parenting” that makes reading the reward, setting cozy book “traps,” inviting dads into the culture of story, and helping young writers grow in skill instead of outsourcing their creativity to machines. This episode is a gentle but galvanizing invitation to choose books over bots, shared chapters over scrolling, and to give our kids a living connection to something timeless. See everything S.D. We're back in Appalachia! This recording captures about an hour on the banks of the New River in the southeastern part of West Virginia's pan — you can call it a pan right? When I lived in Jefferson County folks to the west called us panhandlers. You'll hear Sandstone Falls, the calls of local birds and insects, and a couple of trains rumbling by (midway and end). This week's episode was recorded by regular uncommon ambience contributor Dr. April Blakeslee (who is a researcher and associate professor of Biology at Eastern Carolina University). Her travels brought her recently to New River Gorge and specifically the Sandstone Falls area. Thank you Dr. April!(obviously the New Rive Gorge Bridge is twenty miles as the crow flies from the Sandstone Falls but as a bridge freak I couldn't resist adding a fave bridge to my episode cover... and don't get me started about CBBT).

Watch now: https://westvirginia.gov/highline-warren-driving-success-in-yeswv/ #2 – From THE REAL WV – Far down in the New River Gorge, in the shadow of the towering New River Gorge Bridge, a West Virginia Division of Highways bridge crew is painstakingly replacing the wooden deck of the historic Tunney Hunsaker Bridge. Built in 1889, the Tunney Hunsaker Bridge was the first bridge across the New River in the New River Gorge, connecting the mining towns of Fayette and South Fayette. When the New River Gorge Bridge opened in 1977, the modest span at the bottom of the gorge was closed to vehicular traffic. But the increase in tourism to the area led to the small span being rebuilt in 1997 and reopened to traffic. In 1998, the bridge was renamed in honor of Tunney Hunsaker, longtime Fayetteville police chief and a former professional boxer who was matched up against Muhammad Ali in Ali's first professional boxing match. Ali and Hunsaker remained friends over the years, and Ali came to Fayetteville in 1997 for Hunsaker's retirement celebration. Work on the bridge is expected to be finished by the end of March. As the movie played, the walls of the historic Granada Theater reverberated with the musical narrations of a 1920s Wurlitzer organ. The occasion represented a homecoming for the instrument, a century after its first installation. The journey represents the spirit of Bluefield, determined to prove that her best days are ahead. The Granada Theater opened in 1928, initially showing silent films grandly accompanied by organ. However, by the late '70s, the theater had closed, and the organ was sold to a private buyer. In 2012, the Bluefield Arts and Revitalization Corporation set its sights on restoring the Granada, including the original Wurlitzer organ. The theater reopened its doors in 2019. The newly restored organ made its debut in April 2024. Located just outside of Thurmond, the Dun Glen Hotel was infamous in the early 1900s. The New River Gorge Convention and Visitor's Bureau describes it as an “upscale den of sin” where “alcohol flowed freely and gambling was the pastime of choice.” The hotel bars stayed open 24/7, allowing for crazy parties and lengthy poker games—the longest ever being 14 years, according to Ripley's Believe it or Not and the Guinness Book of World Records. While the hotel is long gone, the land where it was housed is now controlled by the National Park Service. The $30 million grant offered through the Rural Development RECONNECT program will expand the service in Nicholas, Hardy, and Hampshire counties, serving more than 7,000 individuals. The Nicholas County project was granted to the Nicholas County Commission and CityNet will serve as the internet service provider. Hardy Telecommunication was the successful applicant and will be the ISP for the Hardy and Hampshire County project. “They know what they're doing and I think they'll be able to expand the access to high speed internet in these communities in a reasonable time frame,” said Ryan Thorn, state director of the U.S.D.A. A program from the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources aims to give our old decorations new life in local lakes and reservoirs. Dustin Smith, fisheries biologist with the DNR, talks about the program and why old Christmas trees might be the perfect place for anglers to look for their next catch. “It's just an easy opportunity to use something which is going to be thrown away. But we can utilize them in some of our reservoirs, specifically to add woody habitat,” he said. This year the WVDNR operated two Christmas tree dropoff locations -- one in the northern part of the state and one in the southern part -- and Smith says he anticipates that will continue next holiday season. Hello everyone and welcome to Episode One Hundred and Five! And I hope you all remain safe and healthy out there. SMP Patrons! I want to thank Rich Takmajian for his contribution to the So Much Pingle podcast, via Patreon. Much appreciated, Rich, thank you so much. And if you're out there listening and you would like to kick in a few bucks, it's easy to do, you simply go to the So Much Pingle Patreon page. You can support the show for as little as three bucks a month – less than a fancy cup of coffee! You can also support the show via one-time contributions via PayPal or Venmo (please contact me via email to somuchpingle@gmail.com). I recorded this episode back in early September, while the show was still on hiatus. I was invited to give a presentation at the West Virginia Herpetological Society's annual meeting, which was held this year at the New River Gorge. I can't go any further without giving a shout-out to the good folks of the West Virginia Herp Society. It's a great group that focuses on that important three-legged stool of education, conservation and appreciation. This is not people sitting around talking about their ball pythons, these folks are well-versed in the herpetofauna of their home state and ongoing research and conservation efforts. Their meetings are family friendly and visitor friendly – in fact there were a lot of folks at the annual meeting that came from other states. Thanks especially to Jared Cain, Josh Stover, Jon Tinney and Dylan Cooper for not only inviting me, but for making me and all the other attendees feel welcome and included. And, thank you all as well for arranging my interview with Dr. Thomas K. Pauley. Dr. Pauley and I talked at a picnic pavilion on a very chilly Sunday morning, and I am sure you will love this conversation as much as I did. Thanks for talking with me, Dr. Pauley! And thanks for listening everyone! And as always, please keep the comments and suggestions coming, and please take time to rate the show on your podcast platform! The show email is somuchpingle@gmail.com, and there's also a So Much Pingle group on Facebook, for discussion, comments, feedback, suggestions, herp confessions, tips for herping better, etc. -Mike

Organizations like Main Street Martinsburg, RenewAll and Charleston Urban Works are working to better their downtown areas with help from volunteers, sponsors and organizational partners. Main Street Martinsburg is focusing on historic preservation, protection and use of Martinsburg's historic downtown area in order to boost economic development in the city. This commitment is evident in the broad spectrum of projects and events that MSM organizes, offering fun-filled activities for tourists and drawing in visitors. Meanwhile in Huntington, RenewAll recently transformed Central City Gazebo Park from a barren lawn into a lush public space equipped with trees, café tables and upgraded utilities for running food trucks. It is also putting the final touches on a public art installation. In the Capital City, Charleston Urban Works is working on the West Side Gateway Lighting Initiative, which will revolutionize public lighting in the area. The organization also focuses on enhancing public spaces and supporting business development through initiatives like its new business and property owner survey, which will help shape long-term work plans and goals through 2027. The encounter allegedly occurred in January 1950 near Beckley, and over what is now the Summit Bechtel National Scout Reserve, which adjoins the national park. According to late historian C. Lloyd Gibson, Mount Hope Mayor Pat Garrett spotted the object on the skyline to the east of his home, which sits on a hill that overlooks the town. Becky Sullivan, executive director of the New River Gorge Convention and Visitors Bureau, says she'll be happy to speak with anyone about the encounter. “Mount Hope is a very interesting historical community, no less because the reserve is located there, but it's also at the gateway to the middle section of the New River Gorge National Park,” she said. Though only 30 minutes from Interstate 79, Baker's Run Campground may feel remote due to how it tucks into the hills on the Elk River at Sutton Lake, and that's much of its allure. According to most versions of the once-famous tale, the ghost is that of Jacob Beamer, who was fond of moonlight walks. He met his end one night when he was hit by a train. For many years afterward, his ghost was said to appear to wanderers at night as it searched for his missing head. Need more than a ghost to have a good time? Sutton Lake has recently become famous for alleged sightings of a Bigfoot, and the whole of the region is renowned as the site of the crash landing of the Flatwoods Monster. And if that's not enough, there are plenty of great opportunities for camping and fishing!
