Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024. West Virginia State University greenhouses are aiding in groundbreaking research in agriculture…Med students participate in a simulation program designed to help them understand economic hardships of some Appalachians…and … it's a record year for record fish caught in West Virginia…on today's daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – West Virginia State University President Ericke Cage says the new greenhouses on campus will continue to boost their ongoing agricultural research and development. The 6,912 square foot series of greenhouses will also help to enhance the agricultural research that's already being conducted at the facility in particular. “It's a great opportunity for us to expand our capability [and] provide more space for our researchers to do the cutting-edge research that they do every day to help support agricultural sustainability,” Cage said. Two research teams will use the four bays set up within the greenhouses. One team will focus on plant genomics and watermelon production, looking at disease-resistant watermelon growth to potentially bring onto the market. The other research team is looking at growing switchgrass for bio-oils for bio-fuels that can be used for jet fuel. Funded by the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the greenhouses are an extension of the work the university has already been doing with the USDA around agriculture sustainability. Created to mimic some of the health inequities present in rural Appalachia, many of the simulation's characters had limited income, lack of access to health care and education, poor social support systems, and experienced discrimination based on their social status. The simulation's objectives were to help WVSOM students identify these determinants, recognize their effects on patient health and outcomes, and find strategies for health care workers to address them. If the activity made students anxious, it was by design, said Courtney Eleazer, who teaches in WVSOM's Department of Biomedical Sciences and helped lead the activity. “By placing students in the role of patients, this simulation serves to recreate the chronic stress many rural community members face in response to health inequities,” Eleazer said. And with five more months left in the year, officials expect to break the record for number of records broken. “This year will probably end up being the most,” said Mark Scott, assistant chief of Fish Management for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. So far this year, record specimens of tiger trout, redbreast sunfish, bowfin, redear sunfish, black crappie and most recently the channel catfish have all been caught. On average, four state fishing records are broken each year. Since 2020, 17 records have been broken with five being new records for the blue catfish. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Saturday, July 20, 2024. Officials break ground on the new aerial tram at Hawks Nest State Park…WVU State archeological students uncover ancient artifacts in Malden…and get ready for cheer for some athletes with West Virginia ties at the 2024 Olympics in Paris…on today's daily304. #1 – From SOURCE – State officials recently celebrated the groundbreaking for the new Hawk's Nest State Park aerial tram. The $8 million project is part of the $250 million going into our state parks. The tram originally opened in the '70s and brought many tourists and locals alike until it had to close down two years ago due to maintenance issues. Governor Jim Justice saw a need for new trams at Hawk's Nest and Pipestem Resort State Park and gave the go ahead. The tram transports visitors from Hawks Nest Lodge to the banks of the New River and Hawks Nest Lake. New River Jet Boat Tours picks up passengers at the base of the tram and the Hawks Nest Rail Trail can be accessed from that area. The new tram system reflects the nostalgia that people love but also brings more to the table. The trams are fully ADA accessible and have equipment cabins so people can take their kayaks and bikes down. Students and staff from West Virginia State University's Archeological Field School as well as university students from neighboring states recently finished up another four-week long archeological dig at the historic Hale House in Malden. After last year's dig the team conducted at the site produced a number of 19th century artifacts from the salt industry as well as prehistoric ones. WVSU Associate Professor of History and Field School Director Dr. Michael Workman said the most impressive finds are the archaic pieces they found, which date back even further than 1,000 B.C. One of those extremely old pieces they found was an archaic period drill that Workman said was most likely used by Native Americans who had once roamed the land in the area. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, June 16, 2024. Innovators and Entrepreneurs examines the latest sports craze -- FlingGolf -- and chats with the man who thinks West Virginia is positioned to be a destination for this unique pastime…Three state-rune universities open downtown hubs…and the cell assembly line is taking shape at Form Energy's Weirton location…on today's daily304. #1 – From INNOVATORS & ENTREPRENEURS – Have you heard of FlingGolf? It's similar to golf and played on a regular golf course, but instead of hitting a golf ball with a club, you use a FlingStick thrower to launch the ball toward the hole. Jonathan Bellingham of Capon Springs Resort is a passionate ambassador of this unique sport and thinks West Virginia is a great place to try it out. “ESPN has already filmed two of our tournaments, and I want West Virginia to be the place when people think of a destination for FlingGolf, and we're well on our way to making that happen,” he said. Marshall University, University of Charleston and West Virginia State University have all recently opened one of these spaces and hope that in doing so, they can generate a wide range of benefits for both the campus and the downtown area. Toney Stroud, chief legal counsel and vice president for strategic initiatives and corporate relations at Marshall University, says the creation of the Brad D. Smith Center for Business and Innovation sparked a whole new initiative to invest in West Virginia's future. A $45 million investment, the center opened for classes January 8 and currently houses classroom spaces, computer labs and study rooms. Meanwhile, in Charleston, UC and WVSU have opened their own innovation hubs, bringing a new vibrancy to the state's capital. Read more: https://wvexecutive.com/education-meets-downtown/ #3 – From MSN – There's been more development at the Weirton location where Form Energy broke ground last year. “What you can see behind me is the cell assembly line, going into the ground. It is being commissioned. Stations are being brought up, and we are building cells in the building,” COO and founder Ted Wiley said. Form's investment in Weirton is projected to bring more than 750 jobs. Wiley says they have about a hundred form workers and more than 500 contractors on site each day, some even working around the clock to assure the job gets done on time. He says they're actively looking to hire more manufacturing engineers and will probably have another job fair in the coming months. Abandoned industrial sites have long been a magnet for people to explore and turn into not-at-all-legal hangout spots, but some come with hidden dangers. We learn about the danger at Fairmont Brine, a site in West Virginia that processed liquid used in hydraulic fracking. You'll hear these stories and more this week, Inside Appalachia.
On this week's episode of Inside West Virginia Politics, and in recognition of Black History Month, we talk about what's new for West Virginia State University, what the holiday means to a local chef and entrepreneur and the actual history of the holiday itself.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Wednesday, Oct. 18 Starlink high-speed internet is now available throughout West Virginia…State agencies and higher-ed institutions team up to tackle a shortage of veterinary technologists…and an advanced manufacturing work-study program is putting students to work faster…on today's daily304. #1 – From WVPB – About 5,000 Space-X Starlink satellites are now orbiting the earth, able to provide internet service to the highest mountain and deepest hollow. Del. Daniel Linville, R-Cabell, chairs the House Technology and Infrastructure Committee. He said Starlink now has the capacity to clear its West Virginia waiting list and offer internet service everywhere — except for the restricted Green Bank Observatory area. The service offers an immediate option for any West Virginian to get connected. “It's true broadband speeds,” Linville said. “Your kids can game online if they wish, or you can stream movies or do telehealth or education or anything that you would need to do.” Monthly rates begin at $90. Some households may qualify for the FCC's Affordable Connectivity Program, which provides a $30 monthly discount regardless of internet provider. Learn how to connect to Starlink at www.starlink.com. Read more: https://wvpublic.org/internet-from-space-now-available-throughout-w-va/ #2 – From WDTV – West Virginia University, West Virginia State University and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture have developed a new initiative called Vet Start, designed to address the shortage of veterinary technologists in the state. The four-year program will better prepare students, giving them more hands-on experience to make them career ready by the time of graduation. Cheat Lake Animal Hospital will also provide assistance with this project. Co-owner Dr. Jesse Fallon believes that this program will benefit all clinics around the state. “We need folks that are trained, that are licensed, and who can help us take care of our patients better,” Fallon said. “So the more veterinarian technicians we have, the better skilled veterinarian technicians we have, the better veterinarian medicine we can provide.” Read more: https://www.wdtv.com/2023/10/09/new-vet-tech-program-vet-start/ #3 – From WV GAZETTE-MAIL – Madelyn Ward says she was talking to her hairstylist about trying to find a pathway to a career without going into massive student loan debt and was surprised when she had the perfect solution. “She mentioned her husband was in an advanced manufacturing training program at BridgeValley Community and Technical College in South Charleston. She said it might be a perfect fit for me and it really got my attention, so I looked into it,” Ward said. Ward was one of 20 students the Kanawha Valley Federation of Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) chapter chose for its inaugural 2023 cohort. Students in the 2023 BridgeValley Advanced Manufacturing Technology program applied for and were selected for a paid, part-time position with Toyota West Virginia, Nucor Steel West Virginia or Kanawha Scales and Systems. Ward was one of three students to sign a letter of intent to participate in the work sponsorship program with Nucor. “Being able to go to school, work at the same time and graduate debt-free was a big factor for me,” she said. “Being able to graduate with a degree while making good money and have the opportunity to get a good job with good benefits at Nucor is really awesome. It's really a blessing for me and my son.” To learn more about the FAME program, visit pcda.org/fame-usa. When The University of Cincinnati Bearcats' Director of Football Sports Performance, Niko Palazeti, took on his new role in January 2023, he recognized an immediate need for his program and the Bearcats football squad: he needed a strength and conditioning performance staff. Palazeti had been a member of Coach Mickey Marotti's sports performance staff at Ohio State Football. Yet now, he found himself having to formulate a complete staff to complement new Head Football Coach Scott Satterfield's vision and mission. Coach Palazeti moved quickly, as time was ticking away and the Bearcats would soon be returning from the holiday break. The returning squad had not quite really met him yet and he needed a staff that could hit the ground running to prepare the team for the rapidly approaching spring football practices. Nobody occupied the small and cramped assistant strength & conditioning office. Palazeti made his first call to Columbus, Ohio. His fellow strength and conditioning partner, Coach Chris Friend, had been a strength intern at OSU Football and was later promoted as a full-time strength coach under the olympic sports strength training umbrella. Coach Friend was ALL-IN for Cincy and made the 90 minute trip with his sleeves rolled up and ready to go. Next came Coach Brandon Garcia, who decided to depart Las Vegas, Nevada and UNLV to take on a fresh challenge of Big 12 Conference Football in Cincinnati. Garcia, a former football player at West Virginia State University, also had coaching stints at WVSU and Maryland Terrapins as well as some experience as a personal trainer down in Knoxville, Tennessee. Next on board was Scottie Etherington who had gained some early coaching experience at Marshall University with some intern experience at Ohio State Football and also Maryland Football. Finally, Robert "Robo" Williams was brought back into the fold. Robo had gained football playing experience at Miami University (Ohio) and also played a fifth year at Ohio Dominican where he completed his Masters Degree in Exercise Science, did an internship at Robert Morris University as well one back in his hometown at Cincinnati. He was an assistant at Toledo Rockets, Duke Blue Devils and at Army Football. This is an energetic, meticulous and hard working strength staff with some very good early on coaching experience that is sure to provide solid strength and conditioning knowledge and motivation for a very good and surging college football team. So, here's the ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power Podcast with all four members of Niko Palazeti's strength staff.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, April 2 Did you know you can camp for free within the New River Gorge National Park?...a new airline at Yeager will offer budget flights to Orlando and “the other” Charleston…and an African-American arts academy hosts summer camp for teens…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE GAZETTE-MAIL – “It's a pretty place,” said first-time New River Gorge National Park and Preserve camper Sharon Simpson as she relaxed on a chair at her campsite in the park's Glade Creek Campground. “The only sounds you hear are from the river or a passing train,” Simpson said. “When I walked to the creek to take some pictures, a deer walked right past me.” Unlike most campgrounds in other national parks, where campers are charged fees averaging about $20 per night, all eight campgrounds found within the New River National Park and Preserve are free and open year round. They're rated primitive--meaning they lack drinking water, bathhouses, or hookups for power and other utilities--but what they lack in amenities are more than made up for with the area's natural beauty and proximity to recreation like fishing and hiking. Read more: https://www.wvgazettemail.com/news/new-river-gorges-no-fee-campgrounds-a-rarity-among-national-parks/article_39387025-9380-5371-a9db-46fa91db3cc2.html #2 – From GOVERNOR.WV.GOV – Gov. Jim Justice has announced a partnership with the successful new low cost carrier Breeze Airways to connect West Virginia International Yeager Airport (CRW) with at least five cities over the next two years. New nonstop flights to Orlando, Florida (MCO) and Charleston, South Carolina (CHS) will begin May 31, 2023. The new routes are now on sale at introductory fares of $59 and $49, respectively, one way. At least three more destinations, including New York City, are slated to be added over the next 24 months. This innovative partnership between the state, Kanawha County, and the City of Charleston comes after years of decline in available destinations from smaller airports around the country, including West Virginia International Yeager Airport. The new flights will more than double air connectivity to West Virginia's capital. Breeze was launched in 2021 by JetBlue founder and former CEO David Neeleman with a mission to fill a key gap in America's air-travel offerings: efficient, affordable, direct flights between secondary airports, bypassing hubs for shorter travel times. It was recently named one of the best domestic airlines in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure. Carter Godwin Woodson (December 19, 1875 – April 3, 1950)[1] was an American historian, author, journalist, and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). He was one of the first scholars to study the history of the African diaspora, including African-American history. A founder of The Journal of Negro History in 1916, Woodson has been called the "father of black history".[2] In February 1926 he launched the celebration of "Negro History Week", the precursor of Black History Month.[3] Woodson was an important figure to the movement of Afrocentrism,[4] due to his perspective of placing people of African descent at the center of the study of history and the human experience.[5] Born in Virginia, the son of former slaves, Woodson had to put off schooling while he worked in the coal mines of West Virginia. He graduated from Berea College, and became a teacher and school administrator. He gained graduate degrees at the University of Chicago and in 1912 was the second African American, after W. E. B. Du Bois, to obtain a PhD degree from Harvard University. Woodson remains the only person whose parents were enslaved in the United States to obtain a History PhD.[6] He taught at historically black colleges Howard University and West Virginia State University but spent most his career in Washington, DC managing the ASALH, public speaking, writing, and publishing. _ wikipedia source

Changed Assignment: President Ericke Cage President Ericke Cage is Dr. Foster's guest on this episode of Fostering Solutions. The 13th president of West Virginia State University, President Cage is a native of Halifax County, Virginia. He joined the university in July 2021 as vice president and chief of staff and was subsequently appointed by the Board as the university's chief operating officer on July 30, 2021, with responsibility for managing the day-to-day operations of the university. Since assuming the leadership of West Virginia State University, Cage has prioritized institutional stabilization and operational optimization, renewal of the “state spirit,” the development and expansion of high demand academic programs, and the cultivation of a diverse range of internal and external relationships to support WVSU's forward momentum and growth. Under Cage's leadership, the university was able to obtain historic levels of state funding for its land-grant programs and Healthy Grandfamilies program during the recently concluded state legislative session. Also, the university recently obtained a more than $700,000 grant from the Kanawha County Commission to launch a Cybersecurity Innovation Center at WVSU in fall 2022. Plans are also underway to add the university's first doctoral degree program in education. Prior to joining WVSU, Cage most recently served as executive advisor to the president and Board of Visitors at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia – where as a member of the university's executive management team he served as principal advisor to the university president and board of visitors on matters related to institutional policy making, governance, government relations, and university ombudsman. Cage also served as speechwriter for Norfolk State's presidents and board chairs. While at Norfolk State University, Cage led the university's 2019-2025 strategic plan committee, served as the chief architect of the university's 2019-2020 self-assessment, and modernized the university's policymaking process to improve decision making and compliance. As a former education lobbyist, Cage was instrumental in expanding Norfolk State's presence and impact on Capitol Hill and before the Virginia General Assembly. He directly supported outreach efforts that helped Norfolk State secure the largest state appropriation in the history of the university. While at Norfolk State, Cage also authored a successful $2.7 million grant proposal to support student access, retention, and completion. As the principal advisor and speechwriter to Norfolk State's presidents and governing board chairs, Cage played a pivotal role in developing the institution's strategic priorities and crafting the narratives that helped to move these priorities forward. As university ombudsman, he advanced a culture of care and inclusion at Norfolk State by serving as a confidential resource for employees as they worked through issues of conflict and challenge. Prior to joining Norfolk State University, Cage served as director of government affairs for Teach for America, and also served as state policy and research director for the Obama-Biden 2012 reelection campaign. Cage served as legislative counsel for U.S. Congressman Tom Perriello, where he managed a legislative portfolio that included federal education, healthcare, defense, and veterans affairs policy. Cage also served as a law clerk for the U.S. Department of Defense, and a legislative fellow for the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs. He also served as a congressional fellow in the office of U.S. Congressman Keith Ellison. During law school, he completed summer legal placements in the New York City Law Department's Special Litigation Unit and at Prudential Financial Corporation. Cage began his professional career as a high school government teacher in his hometown of Halifax County, Virginia, where he was recognized as teacher of the year by the senior class in 2004. Cage is a graduate of Virginia Tech and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science with a minor in leadership studies. Cage holds a masters of law degree in litigation and dispute resolution from the George Washington University Law School. He is also a graduate of the United States Air Force's Air Command and Staff College and the University of Virginia's Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership. Cage currently serves on the boards of the Mountain East Conference, the West Virginia State University Research and Development Corporation, and the West Virginia State University Foundation. Today, we continue a series of conversations with educational leaders in the state of Maryland. We began our Midday on Higher Educationseries in 2018, speaking with college and university presidents throughout Maryland about the ways their institutions, large and small, fit into the communities in which they are located, and what they contribute to the state's workforce and quality of life. We suspended these conversations for the most part during the pandemic, and I am happy to revive them today with Dr. Anthony Jenkins, the president of Coppin State University. Coppin State is one of four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Maryland, and along with Morgan State, one of two here in Baltimore. Dr. Jenkins grew up in Washington, DC. He comes to Baltimore after serving as the President of West Virginia State University. He was appointed President of Coppin State in May, 2020, when his campus was empty of students due to the coronavirus. Students have been back for a while, but Coppin is dealing with a decline in enrollment, a situation that most schools are experiencing across the country. Dr. Anthon Jenkins joins us on Zoom. Raised in the small coal-mining town of Welch, West Virginia, Dr. T. Ramon Stuart realized at a very young age the transformative impact that education could have on one's life, one's family and ultimately one's community. This realization led him to study engineering and higher education administration. His higher education career started at West Virginia State University where he was a faculty member and administrator. Dr. Stuart was recently named President of Clayton State University in Georgia. According to Dr. Stuart, his humble beginnings in McDowell County taught him how to treat people, “because you couldn't act as though you were better than anyone because everybody was trying to make $1 out of 15 cents. And when you know who you are, you understand that, as Luke once reminded us that to whom much is given much as expected.”

Many liberals and progressives have been circling the wagons defending Critical Race Theory as a part of the new “Culture War.” The desire to defend these ideas stems from the reactionary right wing using Critical Race Theory as the new boogie man that is harming the narrative of American Exceptionalism conservatives so desperately cling to. In this episode we will discuss the assertions of Critical Race Theory and inquire: Do these theories challenge capitalism and wealth hierarchies? Or is this simply a plea for more liberal anti racism that seeks to diversify the ruling class as the overall pie shrinks for the rest of the nation? About Dr. Mocombe: Paul C. Dr. Dickerson says both are essential to his success since he started his practice after a career in the army as an ENT surgeon. Dr. Dickerson shares the difference between treating Caucasians and a broad spectrum of patients with skin of color. He breaks down the Fitzpatrick scale in flavors of ice cream and points out that he works with all flavors and shapes. He also explains why it is not just the skin's appearance that factors into Fitzpatrick ratings, but how skin reacts to treatments and environmental factors. He touches on the power of melanin and explains why "Black don't crack" is not the whole story. He notes that the most popular nonsurgical procedure requested by women of color is wrinkle relaxers and fillers and teaches listeners not only to understand how and where they should be used. And he talks about the importance of instilling confidence as one of the most important parts of his work. Hear about that and more on this episode of Start Right.

Melanie Donus is the proud mother of three school-aged children, Dimitri, Michael, and Maxx, who all have Autism Spectrum Disorder and three very different profiles of abilities and challenges. We talk about her new book called Leaning on Mom, a compilation of letters written during the first four months of the coronavirus pandemic. These letters to her own mother, Roberta, share an honest look into her family and the coronavirus impacted their daily living. It's raw, funny, and takes the reader on a roller coaster of emotions, while Melanie leans on Roberta for support and interaction during a period of unplanned survival and isolation. Leaning on Mom gives a snapshot of a family living through an unexpected pandemic, but more-so, opens the door to educating the reader about how school-age children with disabilities, who mostly learn through face-to-face interaction, were suddenly expected to learn virtually and accept an oncoming “new normal” for their education. Melanie also delves into her own personal health challenges. A true story of how she found the necessary inner strength and resilience during a “sink or swim” time that provided little to no emotional support, Melanie takes the reader through her struggle with alcohol during the quarantine. But don't expect all “doom and gloom.” There are miracles, heroes, surprising acts of kindness that leaves the reader full of hope, motivation, and a call for change. About Melanie Throughout the course of parenthood, Melanie has held various philanthropic leadership roles including Co-President of Special Education PTA, Vice President of Parents Association, Founder of the Long Island Special Needs Facebook Group with over 2,000 members, and Parent Mentor/Volunteer at Parent-to-Parent. In addition, she frequently speaks at various local colleges and universities regarding the day-to-day impact of Autism on families and the new trends of neurodiversity inclusion in the workplace. Outside of being the CEO of her boy's busy lives, Melanie is a Vice President at Right Executive Search where she directs the Diversity Talent Acquisition division with a focus on career empowerment for women returning to the workforce and supporting diverse and minority candidates in the workplace. She is the co-author of their eBook series on job search strategies for "Returners" and college students seeking an internship. Melanie received her Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia State University and holds various professional certifications.
