This podcast episode is a detailed discussion about the video game Portal, exploring its innovative puzzle mechanics, narrative style, and cultural impact. The boys delve into the game's development history, particularly how it evolved from a student project to a major Valve release. They highlight Portal's clever writing, dark humor, and the iconic character GLaDOS, praised for her witty one-liners and deadpan delivery. The episode also touches on the seamless integration of gameplay mechanics with storytelling, the memorable "Companion Cube," and the dystopian yet comedic tone that makes Portal a standout title in gaming culture. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to solve teleportation puzzles at the behest of a lovable but murderous robot? We thought so! Today, we discuss the genre mash-up Portal, a modern classic that melds first-person puzzle platforming with an innovative teleportation mechanic. That alone would have made a great game, but the show-stealer is GlaDOS, your hilarious AI nemesis who guides you through this mind bending science experiment of a game. GlaDOS is quite possibly the funniest gaming character of all time. The humor is often subtle, easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention, but can also be in your face and ridiculous. The humor is expertly written and flawlessly delivered, providing context to the crazy world of Aperture Science, your home as you puzzle your way through all 19 stages. Portal is short but substantial and has only gotten better with time. It’s a masterpiece. What’s your favorite quote from Portal? I know, that’s a hard question with all of the great banter from GlaDOS, but we’d love to know your favorite! Send us your thoughts and questions and get heard on the show. Thanks for listening, you are wonderful sentient beings deserving of cake! Our aim is to be completely fan-funded, so please check out our Patreon at mediumretro.com or by going to Patreon and searching for "medium retro." With only two games, [the Portal series](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_(series)) has still managed a gigantic impact on players. Its inventive puzzles are addictive, just like the acerbic jibes of the title's main antagonist, GLaDOS. Behind it all, synth-laden drones and melodic narratives help immerse you into the haunting madhouse of Aperture Science. Its soundtrack was composed primarily by [Mike Morasky](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Morasky), who joins me for an exhaustive journey through Portal's audio. I also spoke to [Jonathan Coulton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Coulton), who wrote famed end-credits tracks like "Still Alive" and [Ellen McLain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_McLain), the voice of GLaDOS herself. Welcome to [PODCAST NAME HERE]! Today we’re going to be talking about Valve Software’s Portal, a first person puzzle game that we evidently think is pretty good. Going through Aperture Science’s test chambers again in 2016 is just as satisfying as when the game originally came out in 2007, and the impact the game has had on the industry leads us to discuss a lot more than just its mechanics. We’ll talk about Portal’s design, Dead Space, PC gaming, virtual reality, King Kong, Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves… and more. This one will be a doozy. Thanks as always for listening, and join us again in two weeks when we talk about Star Fox 64!

Aperture Science was a meme factory. Years after Portal's release, we are still quoting the jokes and phrases that helped give the game its unique personality. With the forthcoming release of Portal 2, writer Erik Wolpaw is grappling with the memes spawned by the original. Making cake references might be an easy way to wink at fans, but there is a danger of the game collapsing under the weight of its own baggage. This week, we discuss the unique challenges facing Portal 2 and consider the ways in which memes function in video games and the video game community. We'd be interested to hear your thoughts in the comments, be they on the subject of cake, cubes, or Keyboard Cats. Some discussion starters: - Will it be hard for Portal 2 to distance itself from the baggage of the first game? Would you be disappointed if there were not cake references? - What are some of your favorite game memes and why? Is there a specific purpose they serve either in or out of the game? - Is it possible to have gameplay memes? To listen to the podcast: - Subscribe to the EXP Podcast via iTunes here.
