In 2016, indie studio Campo Santo released their debut title, the narrative adventure game Firewatch. Set in a national forest in the Wyoming wilderness, you play as a fire lookout named Henry. The game beautifully portrays the isolation of the wild, and Henry's only source of human connection is the voice of his supervisor, Delilah, over a walkie-talkie. In this episode, writer Sean Vanaman and composer/writer Chris Remo revisit the development of Firewatch, in which every aspect of the game was built on the fly.Episode Transcript & ReferencesBecome a Gameplay MemberJoin our DiscordFollow Gameplay on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Twitch

Very special guests Em and Jackson from Abnormal Mapping join Austin and Cado to discuss the hot new game that everyone's playing: The New York Times Crossword. Thanks to Chris Remo's new video series, everyone on the pod has been learning the nuances and tricks the NYT like to employ, from esoteric clues that appear again and again to the specific clue construction logic that allow just enough space for multiple interpretations that might still fit in the puzzle. After the break, Cado and Jackson have been checking out Splitgate, the “Halo meets Portal” multiplayer game that has recently blown up, despite it having released a few years ago. Em's been checking out Final Fantasy XIV, and is having a better time with the new A Realm Reborn changes than either Austin or Cado did with the original content. Welcome to another episode of I'll Show You Mine! This week James is showing Elyse "Firewatch" for the PC, released in 2016. Probably the most recent game we've ever played, Firewatch is by developer Campo Santo and follows the story of Henry, a man trying to get away from it all by taking a summer job as a firewatch in Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming. Along the way Henry forms a relationship with fellow lookout Delilah who lives in the tower across the way, and strange things happen over the course of the summer.Join us as we talk about the wonder and awe of being out in nature alone, the great environmental storytelling in this game, and the bittersweet mood that settles over the whole adventure. And if you want to play the game, do it before you listen, because spoilers abound! The song at the end of this episode is "Ol' Shoshone" from the Firewatch OST, by Chris Remo. Our next episode will be August 2nd, when Elyse shows James "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken" from 1991.Follow @isympodcast on Twitter for show updates and more, and be sure to check out twitch.tv/sparkmandesigns for streaming games and art!Our theme song is:Dreams by Joakim Karud @joakimkarudCreative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported— CC BY-SA 3.0 creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/

With Nick Breckon now contained within the computerized realm, this week's Important If True takes an algorithmic bent as we soldier on to discuss the issues that matter most. For instance: If you blast Billy Idol from a boombox while covering your body in memes, will the Terminator let you in the front door? If DeepMind doesn't know who you are, can you ever really know yourself? And are corn and maize the same thing? Nope, that's a trick question, asshole. Welcome to Memeland. Episode #59: When you think of video game music, you might hear Koji Kondo's Super Mario Bros. original score, or maybe FlyLo FM from Grand Theft Auto's licensed soundtrack. Either way, video games have long held promise for composers and musicians. Like movies, video games are naturally a broad medium with room for different musical experiences. Games also provide a lucrative revenue stream for some artists. One composer, Chris Remo, who has worked on recent hits like Gone Home and Firewatch, joins us to talk about how he got into the video game industry. We also hear from Steve Gaynor, co-founder of indie game studio, The Fullbright Company. Kotaku editor-at-large Kirk Hamilton gives us a rundown of current and past trends in game music. To end the show, we get an idea of how video game music has influenced an entire music genre, and hear from Spencer Seim of Nintendocore band The Advantage. Week in Geek: Andrew plays to complete the Assassin's Creed Chronicles trilogy with its final Russian installment while Dan plays Campo Santo's new release, Firewatch. Same Song, Different Tune: Dan and Andrew discuss how the cultural meaning of music can change drastically when used in different contexts. How many people think about demon-slaying when they hear "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas? How many people think of stylized violence when they hear Dick Dale's "Miserlou"? (How many people think about A Podcast [ , ] For All Intents and Purposes when they hear "Stayin' In Black" by Wax Audio––or either ACDC's "Back in Black" or the BeeGee's "Stayin' Alive", for that matter?) Cheap Games, Part 2 - The Returns: Andrew and Dan return tangentially to the discussion of cheap ass games with an investigation of how many players think of a game's value in terms of length of play. When walking through a place you've walked many times before, you see a small hole in the ground, decide to climb in, and now you're falling forever and ever and ever, unable to stop, unable to return to the life you had before you found the hole. This is the video game Downwell and this is Chris Remo's life after finding the video game Downwell. Elsewhere, Nick Breckon has gained control of an aircraft carrier.
On the surface Gone Home doesn’t look like much with its dated visuals. Though, unlike the majority of titles that are on store shelves or readily for digital distribution Gone Home tackles thematic elements about life such as sexuality, relationships, growing up, etc that most games don’t address or if they are mentioned it’s brief. In this episode the guys are joined by Neal Lewis from Oops, All Movies! to dissect and relive nostalgic elements that they too recall from the 1990’s and ponder its thematic hefts.
E3 is over but we're somehow not over E3. This week Danielle runs down her favorite games from the show, Jake recounts his fleeting brush with Destiny, and why he can't stop considering the desires of the tiny Chris Remo who lives in his mind.
The door to the plane opens; the crowd is deafening. Chris Remo descends the stairs onto the tarmac, the smell of Steam Dev Days still on his skin, the wave of the future shaping his every step. "What did you see?" someone asks. He continues past. "What did they tell you? What will happen to all of us?" another asks, as he pushes them aside, his gaze set. "Where are you going? What do you know!" Only as the door to his limousine swings to close does a boy see the Steam Machine and controller prototype under Chris' arm.

A message from the future arrives, delivered by hand: Idle Thumbs 140 -- a real bionic back massage of a cast -- is here, with reactions to the CES Steam Machine announcements, failed pursuit of the Nuclear Throne, and more terrible happenings in the world of DayZ. With special guest Chris Remo.

The day after the One Life Left (Venus Patrol) (Wild Rumpus) party and the team aren't feeling all that clever. Thank goodness, then, they have an all-star cast of clever guests to get them through the lunch hour. Who? There's Matt Boch from Harmonix and Nathan Vella from Capy(bara) who ably hold down the fort with some nonchalantly delivered game theory. Waiting to get paid? So are we, so there's a sight of relief when Cindy Au from Kickstarter arrives and sets Simon thinking about monetization (ie how can we access the Idle Thumbs riches?). Tim Rogers (9/10 in Edge) waits patiently in the wings then pretends he wasn't waiting at all (9/10 in Edge) and really he could think of many (9/10 in Edge) better things to do than be (9/10 in Edge) right here promoting his game. Zach Barth tells us about Spacechem and helps OLL create a new genre, then Chris Remo pops in to show the team how to do the podcasting part of radio properly. And somewhere in the middle Martin Hollis wanders in to bring Ste some lunch. It's fun, fragmented, flippant and unfocussed: it's One Life Left, live from the show floor at GDC 2012. Final episode tomorrow!
Jeff and Brad are joined by guests for the first of our two podcasts from Game Developers Conference 2011. Rob turtles up for a free-for-all discussion of RTS multiplayer gaming with Tom Chick and Chris Remo. What really powers the Starcraft II community, and why can't other RTS games match it? It looks unstoppable, but does a challenger arise with League of Legends? 3MA favorites Supreme Commander II and RUSE depress the panel with their multiplayer front-end, but Chris cheers himself up by building a cathedral in Dawn of Discovery.
Troy - suffering from a splitting headache - is joined by Rob Zacny, Tom Chick (hooray) and Idle Thumbs/Gamasutra star Chris Remo before he heads off to join Irrational Games. The topic: Starcraft 2. Why does such a competitive, sports structured game like SC2 have such wide appeal? Is the single player campaign really that different from other campaigns? And how about that writing? What are the great joys and great disappointments? Finally, what does Starcraft 2 mean for the future of the PC RTS? Troy's Starcraft 2 review Tom's Starcraft 2 review Rob's thoughts Idle Thumbs podcast FoS/TMA Meetup details
Aperture Science was a meme factory. Years after Portal's release, we are still quoting the jokes and phrases that helped give the game its unique personality. With the forthcoming release of Portal 2, writer Erik Wolpaw is grappling with the memes spawned by the original. Making cake references might be an easy way to wink at fans, but there is a danger of the game collapsing under the weight of its own baggage. This week, we discuss the unique challenges facing Portal 2 and consider the ways in which memes function in video games and the video game community. We'd be interested to hear your thoughts in the comments, be they on the subject of cake, cubes, or Keyboard Cats. Some discussion starters: - Will it be hard for Portal 2 to distance itself from the baggage of the first game? Would you be disappointed if there were not cake references? - What are some of your favorite game memes and why? Is there a specific purpose they serve either in or out of the game? - Is it possible to have gameplay memes? To listen to the podcast: - Subscribe to the EXP Podcast via iTunes here. E3 has come and gone, but the over-the-top presentations of upcoming games lingers. Huge screens depicting carnage and head-ripping made epic enthusiasts from around the world spasm with excitement like an epileptic at ananime convention. Which brings us to an article from last month by Chris Remo, Gamasutra Editor At Large and Idle Thumbs entrepreneur, asking if the videogame industry "over-eggs" the epic. I think we've got enough examples of gun-swords and gut-busting work this discussion into a soapy lather. Join us this week while Scott and I ponder chainsaws, crescendos, back flips and fun with Milo. As always, we encourage you to leave your own thoughts in the comments below. Some discussion starters:- Is the videogame industry producing a glut of epic titles? Is it the brunt of guilt on consumers or designers?- What are games do you think restrain themselves yet remain epic?- Do the titles presented at E3, and motion controls, effect the future of epic?To listen to the podcast:- Subscribe to the EXP Podcast via iTunes here.
