Wabi Sabi - The Perfectly Imperfect Podcast with Candice Kumai
AANHPI Month: Honoring Japanese Beauty, Wellness & the Truth About Matcha: Konnichiwa, my friends. Genki desu ka. This AANHPI Month, we begin not with trends—but with truth, reverence, and remembrance. Because behind every bowl of matcha, every beauty ritual, every moment of calm that the world now celebrates...there are generations of Asian hands, stories, discipline, and devotion that made it possible. And for a long time, those stories were not told. This episode is about honoring them. It's about honoring Japan, and the greater AANHPI community: China, Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Hawaii, and beyond: the cultures that have shaped global wellness, beauty, and food in ways that are only now being recognized. It's about bowing—not performatively, but with deep respect: to the teachers, farmers, chefs, artisans, and elders who came before us. Because what we are witnessing right now w/ the global rise of matcha, the fascination with Japanese beauty rituals, the obsession with “clean living”—this did not happen overnight. And it did not happen without us. For decades, Asian culture was overlooked, misunderstood, or reduced to aesthetics without context. Our food was simplified. Our beauty rituals were copied. Our philosophies—like wabi sabi, kintsugi, and mindfulness...were often stripped of their depth. And yet, we continued to show up. Quietly. Consistently. With excellence.Today, the world is finally catching up. But with that visibility comes responsibility. Thank you for listening - please share this episode with a friend and make sure to give this podcast a five star review and subscribe thank you so much for listening again I really appreciate you x ck
It's important to pay attention....On this very special episode we dive into one of the more unique horror movies in recent Japanese and might actually be the best video game adaptation to grace the big screen. It's time for 'Exit 8'.Based on the global hit eponymous video game created by Kotake Create, the movie follows a man (Kazunari Ninomiya) trapped in an endless sterile subway passageway as he sets out to find Exit 8. The rules of his quest are simple: do not overlook anything out of the ordinary. If you discover an anomaly, turn back immediately. If you don't, carry on. Then leave from Exit 8. But even a single oversight will send him back to the beginning. Will he ever reach his goal and escape this infinite corridor? If you like cinema that screws with your head and puts you on a bent ride, then 'Exit 8' is for you and from a very distinct cinematic voice. Back at TIFF we had the pleasure to sit down with co-writer/director Genki Kawamura (via a translator) talk about the origins of it all and wondering if he's ever found himself giving a second guess walking through the subway.Audio is a little rough, but it's still worth a listen for one of our favourite movies of the year.'Exit 8' is in theatres now.

This week we did something a little different. For the first time ever we have a guest where we needed a translator and honestly... it was a blast! We are thrilled to be joined by Japanese story teller Genki Kawamura who is the producer behind Your Name and Suzume, NYT bestselling novelist of If Cats Disappeared From the World , and director of A Hundred Flowers and his latest film Exit 8, the new adaptation of the viral indie horror game! We talk about why liminal horror is having such a massive cultural moment, what it reflects about the world we're living in, and the art of adapting a game with almost no story into something that genuinely gets under your skin and heart. We also get some Japanese horror and film recommendations you're going to want to write down! Exit 8 is in theaters now via Neon. Go see it. AND COME HANG OUT!!! In this ScreenFish 1on1 Interview, Genki Kawamura, director of EXIT 8, discusses the challenges of bringing a unique video game to the big screen and how the film intentionally “blurs the lines” between reality and choice. He reflects on the shifting perspectives, the weight of character decisions, and the moral uncertainty that drives the story. Kawamura also shares how each character “levels up,” how anomalies were determined, and why the film is more than just a typical video game adaptation.EXIT 8 is available in theatres on Friday, April 10th, 2026.
"Exit 8" is a 2025 Japanese mystery psychological horror film directed by Genki Kawamura, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kentaro Hirase, based on the 2023 video game "The Exit 8" developed by Kotake Create. The film had its world premiere in the Midnight Screenings section of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it received widespread acclaim from critics and has already been a financial success overseas. Kawamura was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will open in theaters on April 10th from NEON. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Start your engines and hit Tokyo's Shuto Expressway with the DreamPod crew in this brand new episode of the DreamPod! Hosts Brian, Harvey, and Mike R are joined by our friend Lemon to dive deep into Genki's cult-classic Dreamcast racing titles Tokyo Xtreme Racer and Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 — which were released as Tokyo Highway Challenge in Europe. We explore the unique RPG racing mechanics, stunning visuals and banging tunes that continue to make these games stand out in the Dreamcast's library — while also highlighting their role in introducing Western audiences to the world of underground street racing and tuner culture that would later explode in popularity because of games like Need for Speed: Underground and movies like The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. We also take a sizeable detour to talk about Speed Devils — which recently had its online functionality restored — as well as Genki's 2025 modern-gen reboot of Tokyo Xtreme Racer.Relevant links:Lemon's YouTube channelSpeed Devils OnlineFeaturing music from: Tokyo Xtreme Racer 1 & 2 and Speed DevilsLooking for more Dreamcast Junkyard goodness? Well, we all knew it was coming, but Microsoft has raised the prices of their consoles, likely in response to the tariff situation in the US. However, they also announced a game price increase to $80, matching Nintendo's recent Mario Kart World price announcement. Is an $80 price tag the new norm? You know LOKI has something to say about that. Also, Rob has some things to say on his recent trip to Super Nintendo World at Universal Fan Fest Nights.
