I'm Areej AbuAli and I am the founder of Women in Tech SEO. Today's episode is all about helping large websites with their SEO website migration's. And I am joined by the brilliant Katherine Watier Ong, who is the owner of WO Strategies. Hey, Katherine. Katherine: Hi, how are you? Areej: Yeah, I'm great, thanks. It's so good to have you here. Katherine: Yeah, thanks for having me on. Areej: I think you host a podcast of your own, don't you? Katherine: I do, yeah. I have 2, I decided to be an overachiever. I have one that's an Alexa flash briefing. It's a daily SEO tip though, although over the summer it's been very not daily. And then I have another podcast called Digital Marketing Victories where we talk about the soft skills you need to be successful as a digital marketer. Areej: Oh, I love that. I know that you shared a few of those episodes and yeah, I love them. And how does it feel to be on the other side? Katherine: Oh, I mean, it's great. I help clients with podcasts and so it kind of made sense to do a podcast myself. And then I used to do a lot of speaking at the Voice Summit. So again, it sort of made sense to have an Alexa Flash Briefing. So, I know the ins and outs of how to do that work, too. Areej: Yeah, awesome. Well, I'm happy to have you here with us. You are a super, super active member of the Women in Tech SEO community. And I would love everyone to know a little bit more about you and how you got into the world of SEO. Katherine: Sure. Yeah. So, I've been doing SEO for 17 years, though I've been marketing forever. I planned my first conference, and I was 13 and launched a non-profit when I was 16 and got press coverage and did events and, you know, eventually a newsletter anyway. And for the last five years, I've been running a solo organic traffic consultancy. So, I focus on anything with a search function in it and help clients be found organically. So that's Google, YouTube, Bing, Facebook, that kind of thing, but those are the three big ones, Google, YouTube, and Bing. Yeah, so that's me I love SEO, before I started my consultancy, I ran the online marketing and analytics team at Ketchum, the big PR firm, servicing their clients globally. So, my first year there, it was just me. They'd never have anybody that did SEO or analytics. So, they thought one was enough for all their clients globally. They have like 12 offices in China. So, I had sixty-five clients my first year and they weren't small, Gazprom and ConAgra, you know, this large. Anyway, eventually, we had a team of nine. Areej: Wow. How did it feel moving from such a big type of company and just starting your own thing? Katherine: You know, I mean, I love the experience at Ketchum for sure, but also agency work can just burn you...

In this episode, Teri welcomes Mark Tucker, an Alexa Champion, Bixby Premier Developer, the current Senior Architect of Voice Technology at Soar.com, and the creator of the revolutionary Alexa game, Number Spies.Welcome, Mark!Mark Tucker is a software developer and architect with over 25 years’ experience. He started his voice-tech journey in 2016 when there were only 4,000 skills in the Alexa Skills Store, and has worked at 2 startups creating innovative voice experiences for customers. Mark finds time to create his own Alexa Skills and Bixby Capsules, and is the organizer of the Phoenix Alexa Meetup and the Phoenix Chapter of the Ubiquitous Voice Society. He has spoken at conferences including the Phoenix Mobile and Emerging Tech Expo, The Alexa Conference, Voice Summit, and Project Voice. Mark is the creator of Speech Markdown which he released as open source and can be found at SpeechMarkDown.org. He enjoys finding ways for non-profits to benefit from voice-first. He has a passion for family, voice technology and serving others.Getting Into VoiceHis first run in with voice technology when was he was a teenager. He had just received his first home computer and it had a voice synthesis module which could say about 80 words or phrases. He found that very cool.He learned how to do programming on that computer and later in high school advanced his programming knowledge. He has been involved in technology ever since and most of his skills are self-taught.He came across Alexa in 2016 when there were about 3,000 skills in the US Skills store. He started by mastering all sorts of things from Amazon Web Services to all their cloud services. When he got into Alexa development, he fell in love with the conversational nature of the technology and the fun experiences that one can build with it.Number Spies is the most ambitious project that he’s ever done and it had been an idea in his head for more than a year. The Idea For Number Spies and How it WorksHe came across the concept of a number station, which spies used to communicate during the Cold War and World War 2, and he was fascinated by it.One spy would use a short wave radio to transmit a series of digits and the other spy tuned to that frequency would be able to hear the digits, but they couldn’t decode the message unless they had the one-time pad that was similar to the one the sender had. That made the message an unbreakable cypher.Mark learned more about that and he used some features of that concept in creating Number Spies. For example, the game produces poly-generated numbers that sound like it’s a real radio transmission. He had to mix down files together on the back end and he now has a content management system where he has can put in a message and it will encode it. The system then builds a file that can be listened to through a flash briefing. One can then go to a website and enter the numbers they have heard, and that can help them figure out what the secret was if they have the corresponding one-time pad.One can choose to manually decode a message or ask Alexa to help make the process faster. When one manually decodes the message they get more points.Playing the GameThe player takes on the role of a spy, Agent 313, who is brand new to the agency. The game gives the new player a walk through as part of their initial briefing after which they will be sent to spy school so they can understand the main commands they will need to use to play the game. After that, the player can start the game. The player can also go to the website where all the commands are listed. They can play at least two or three times a week decoding messages and solving puzzles.Inside the messages that the player has to decode, they can be told to visit a country or city, and travelling there can earn them points.Everything that happens in the game is tied to a certain day so the player has to play, decode the message, and complete their mission within 24 hours. The game also has levels and as the player moves up the levels, the missions they go on become harder and more complex. The player can go into a different mission every 90 minutes from when they successfully complete another one. There is in-skill purchasing that the player can do. For example, they need money to travel to their different locations depending on where they travel. The agency that one belongs to is based out of Washington, D.C. and so the farther one travels the costlier it is. The more missions one completes, the more money they get. When they run out of money, they can purchase more money. One has to use an alias when they’re travelling and so at the beginning of the game, the game creates an auto-alias for the player and then as they play the game they can create other aliases for themselves. The goal of playing the game is to become a master spy. There are many fun and entertaining aspects of the game that make it so awesome to play. In this episode, Teri shares a recording of his recent webinar where Roger Kibbe spoke about the different types of skills that we can potentially use with our Echo devices.Enjoy!Roger is the Senior Developer Evangelist at Viv Labs which develops the conversational AI technology that powers Samsung Bixby. He has been working in tech for over 20 years as a consultant, technical architect and strategist, and founder of a voice startup. A big-picture thinker and achiever, Roger is passionate about using technology as an enabler of great people experiences. An accomplished speaker and a proven thought-leader, He enjoys sharing his fountain of knowledge with others and has presented at some of the most prominent voice and AI conferences in America, including Voice Summit, Project Voice, Samsung SDC, Dreamforce and VMWorld.Teri hosted the webinar on March 25th, and it was all about voice technology and the Coronavirus, and how we can use this technology to help us in what we are experiencing today. He had several speakers and Roger spoke about voice assistants, mental health, and pandemics, and how we can use various types of skills to help with the sense of loneliness, isolation, and some mental health issues that are already cropping up because people are isolated. The Coronavirus and How Voice Can HelpThere has been a rise in different mental health issues because of the isolation people have been under and Roger has been looking into how we can use the voice assistants in our homes and smartphones to help with this. Some of the way include:Social ConnectionThe first benefit of voice assistants is that they can help people connect through both voice and video calls. Smart speakers are better conference call tools than our phones, and with video calling, for example, when one person has a smart speaker with a screen, another person can video call them with their smart speaker by saying, “Alexa, call [That Person’s Name]”ExercisingExercising during this time can help in a big way with maintaining good mental health while in isolation and there are several voice experiences on different voice assistants that one can use to help with exercising. Roger uses the “7-Minute Workout” experience on Alexa.MeditationThere are meditation tools that can help one relax and take things easy in the midst of the distressing times we are in now. Voice assistants can teach someone how to meditate or give one guided meditation lessons. They include Headspace Meditation on Alexa and Google, Mindless Meditation on Bixby, Calm Meditation on Google Assistant, and Guided Meditation on Alexa.SleepSleeping better is also critical at this time, and there are several ambient sound skills, capsules, and actions that are available to help people sleep. They include Sleep Sounds and Healing.FM.Entertainment and GamesAnother way to stay sane during isolation is through family games and there are several great multi-player voice experiences (games) for families to play. They include Word Tennis on Alexa, Song Quiz by Volly, Would You Rather? and Trivial Pursuit on Alexa.Voice assistants can keep people entertained from the confines of their homes through skills like Escape the Room (The voice version of an escape room), Feel the Pressure, The Vortex, Tempers Rising, and Question of the Day.LearningWith all the time that we have on our hands due to the isolation, we can take that time to learn new things, and there are skills like Make Me Smart on Alexa and Learn Something Radio. In this episode, Teri is welcomed by Keri Roberts on the Inside Voice Podcast to talk about a whole host of topics around voice technology.Enjoy the Conversation!Teri is a sports exercise physician and clinical assistant professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He is the founder of Voice First Health, the leading podcast about the intersection of voice first technology and healthcare. He is also the founder of Alexa in Canada, the leading Amazon Alexa resource for Canadians. He is an award winning TEDx and keynote speaker, Amazon Alexa champion, educator, consultant, podcaster and briefcaster who loves sharing his excitement for artificial intelligence and voice first technology. He is the host of both his podcasts, and the daily Voice in Canada flash briefing, which is the number one rated Amazon Alex flash briefing and new skill in Canada.Becoming an Alexa ChampionTeri was recently named an Alexa champion due to his last few years of content development around Amazon Alexa and voice technology in general. He started the Alexa in Canada podcast, Voice in Canada flash briefing, and the Voice First Health Podcast to help grow the voice technology community and get people excited about the possibilities around what Alexa can do for them and society as a whole. He has also helped people develop their own flash briefings through his flash briefing course. All his content was picked up by Amazon and they wanted to recognize him for it.Crack the Code Gamified Flash BriefingIt’s been a fun game that Teri has been doing and he recently did its second round. The first time he did it, it was as a thank you to his listeners, podcast guests, and sponsors. He wanted it to be a flash briefing but since flash briefings don’t allow for a two-way conversation, he created an accompanying Alexa skill, which he called Crack the Code.To play the game, listeners have to listen to the Voice in Canada flash briefing every day so they can hear the clue or puzzle Teri shares. They then have to solve the clue or puzzle and go to the Crack the Code skill, talk to Alexa, and then find out if they got the correct answer to the clue or puzzle.Alexa then gives them a small little piece of the final code.If they do that every day for the duration of the contest, then they get all the pieces to say the final code to Alexa. If they crack the code, Alexa gives them the information on how to enter to win a big prize package. The last Crack the Code contest went on for 10 days and Teri got a lot of great feedback from participants. Close to 900 people entered the contest and 51 actually solved the code and were given a variety of prizes. The contest was sponsored by AudioBurst, Trinity Audio, Treble.FM, VoiceXP, Voice Summit, and Amazon. The previous Crack the Code had gone on for 14 days and the feedback he got is that 14 days was a little too long. The contest created a voice marketing funnel for Teri because when people listened to the flash briefing and played the game, they would ultimately enter their email address which enabled Teri to build his email list.Marketing the Flash BriefingWhen he first started his flash briefing, he had had his podcast for a few months and a bit of an audience, which helped attract listeners to the flash briefing. There was nothing else in Canada in terms of Alexa related content so Canadians who were interested in Alexa could quickly access his website because it ranked high on Google. That also helped build his brand.Earlier on, he promoted the flash briefing on his podcast and blog.Being Influenced By Gary Vee Teri first heard about voice technology from Gary Vaynerchuk and Gary has been a huge influence on him.A lot of people in the voice technology industry are influenced by Gary Vaynerchuk.Building a Team Around his BrandTeri realized that with his full time job, he needed help in doing more video content and sharing out his content on a wider scale. He was lucky to get a videographer and digital marketing strategist. He had them both with him at Project Voice to capture as much content as possible so he could produce valuable, entertaining, and educational content for the voice community.Distributing that content helps to build his own brand.Sonic BrandingAs we go into the voice first era, sonic branding will be critical for every business. It’s all about what a brand sounds like.Teri recently worked with Audrey Arbeeney of Audiobrain to create his sonic branding based on his interests and character.Using Voice in His Daily LifeHe hasn’t actually incorporated voice in his practice due to the data security, privacy, and other issues surrounding voice. He is very interested in using Alexa and Alexa devices as educational tools for health education. At home, he uses Alexa for routines, flash briefings, home automation, and his kids have fun playing games. He also experiments with skills he can create. He is excited about the potential for how voice assistants can be used in the home and how homes will become like little satellite medical clinics as the technology get better.List of resources mentioned in this episodeThe COVID-19 Informational WebinarLearn How to Create Your Own Flash BriefingThe Alexa in Canada PodcastThe Voice First Health PodcastOther useful resources:Voice in Canada: The Flash BriefingComplete List of Alexa CommandsAlexa-Enabled and Controlled Devices in CanadaTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterAlexa in Canada Facebook PageAlexa in Canada Community Group on FacebookAlexa in Canada on InstagramPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.ca See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In Episode 27, hear an analogy of how the removal of a broken bridle from a reining horse during a championship-level ride can relate to our choices to either support or interfere with our marketing and technology teams as they offer strategies to future ready our businesses. Welcome in to Episode 27 of Agile Digital Business podcast where Season 2 is focused on the voice platform. I am Vickie Maris, a digital futurist, voice platform evangelist, and host of Agile Digital Business podcast. I like to challenge you to see the future of your business through the lenses of your future customers, clients, association members and program participants. Through the listener community in Patreon, you can engage in discussion around the topics covered in the podcast that will spark ideas for how you can flex your strategy and align the way you communicate about your products and services in ways that your customer is asking for today. This episode is "freestyle." I'd like to bring you up to speed on where I’ve been. If you’ve been listening to the show on a regular basis, you’ve heard me talk about our music. My husband, Scott Greeson and I, are songwriters and entertainers. When we book for festivals and concert venues, we are often performing with our friends in the band, Trouble With Monday. We also perform as a duo, trio and other combinations of the musicians in the band. Our world was rocked on Jan 31st when we learned that our sound man, Bryan Metzger, had passed away of a heart attack while on vacation. There are still moments when it is hard to believe that he’s gone. We have been practicing many of the tools that I have written about in my books for processing grief in healthy ways that lead us in to the future rather than dwelling on the past. But believe me, there are moments when that is a lot easier to say than to do. Scott and I are leading a day retreat, Changing Life Journal Writing Retreat, to help you with advancing your writing projects and journaling on March 7th at an Airbnb in South Bend, Indiana near Notre Dame. We’re looking forward to spending time in the quiet to reflect, to write, to plan and to support each other in a few moments of quiet conversation during the day. If you would like to join us for the event, there are a few spots remaining. It’s listed out on EventBrite. One of the reasons I started delving in to understanding the voice platform and how musicians, authors and businesses should be preparing, was because we haven’t had great results when asking Amazon Alexa if she has information about Scott’s music or about my books. I have been working on changes to my website and other marketing in order to make my content more discoverable. Here’s the curiosity - since my books are self-published in Amazon, you would think that it would be really easy for Alexa (created by Amazon) to dip in to a data pool that would provide her with details about the titles, author, or content. But she isn’t yet very informed so, I am, one very slow step at a time, updating my web pages, claiming my author panel in Google, updating my About page, improving load time on my site, and several other things. One of my favorite episodes in the voice space during recent weeks has been the 100th episode of Inside Voice. The episode is titled, Marketing Tips by Leaders in the Space. I highly recommend that you listen to it. The show is hosted by Keri Roberts. There is a focus on voice technology with educational and innovative content. I often listen to episodes of this show during my commute. Because of that, I use my voice to take notes by asking Siri to “make a note.” I have developed a process for putting a keyword in the first sentence of each note so they are easier to search for later when I’m developing a podcast episode or writing my next book. For instance, I might say, Siri, make a note, and then my first sentence will be, Podcast next episode, period. Include my notes from episode 100 of Inside Voice podcast, period. Helpful tips for my listeners. Period. One of the concepts shared by Stuart Crane of Survey Line and Voice Metrics.io is that his companies are collecting leads by voice and creating tools to help other companies use voice for lead generation. The tool, surveysbyvoice is a product of Survey Line. Stuart also talks about a new platform his company has available called engagebyvoice.com voicemetrics.io For details about tickets for Voice Summit, Oct. 5-8, 2020, in Washington, DC: https://www.voicesummit.ai/tickets I have recently proposed a conference talk on the topic of future readying your professional development center to survive and thrive in an age of self-education, AI and other digital disruptions. I’m looking at how trends in self-education, uses of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the advance of digital voice assistants are shaping lifelong learning. It’s such a fascinating space. I’ve heard Dr. Joe Dispenza say on videos in YouTube that in the age of the Internet with all the information that is available for free, ignorance is a choice. Scott and I will be playing music for a private event on Saturday night with a couple of our other fellow musicians. After that event, I head out to Social Media Marketing World Conference. I’ve attended that event since 2014 and find it to be one of the best run conferences around. I do admit that I liked it better when it wasn’t so huge in terms of numbers who attend, but it still is an amazing place to get energized about techniques and tools for marketing and engaging in social media with your customers. In fact, it was at one of the previous editions of this conference when I learned about Flash Briefings in a breakout session for podcasters. Last year, I gleaned several great pieces of content for developing a YouTube channel and for taking advantage of LinkedIn and the fact that there is so little original content posted by LinkedIn users. That hasn’t been a category that I fall in as I have loved to post short videos on LinkedIn about leadership lessons and tips for working with teams that I pick up from the time I spend training our llamas and Connemara pony. In fact, I just posted a new video last night on my LinkedIn feed, that I recorded while sitting in the barn aisle with the llamas. I talk about developing trust among your team members. A few days prior to that, I shared a link to a video on YouTube of an amazing ride by Dan Huss on his championship reining horse, a Quarter Horse, Ms Dreamy. The bridle broke during the early part of the ride. Dan chose to continue the pattern. He reached down to get the swinging bridle out from between the front legs of his mare, and then rode her as if there was no tomorrow. By putting a 2nd hand on the reins, he was disqualified but it didn’t deter him. Every turn, every change of speed, every sliding stop, was delivered expertly and calmly by his horse through communication she was receiving from Dan by slight changes in his seat and legs; and a demeanor that reflected their long-time connection. It made me think of the things we’re all doing to get our businesses future ready for voice. Are you pulling your marketing team up to a halt to assess the situation, to approve of every equipment change and to get legal involved? Or are you reaching in while they are still at full speed and getting broken equipment out of the way so that they can take the company (your team) to future success by opening up channels to better listen to your customers in the ways they want to be communicating with you? I hope it’s the latter. As I’ve been listening to and watching videos of Dr. Joe Dispenza talking about speaking intentions about the future and speaking gratitude about the future as if it already exists, I’ll leave you with this thought to consider for the next part of your day, “What is the greatest ideal of myself that I can be today?” Friend, I love you and appreciate you being here listening and learning. Now, please join me in the quest to teach; inspire; and connect!

The Inside Voice Podcast features people who are doing all kinds of incredible things throughout the voice industry. The podcast also happens to be main content that is produced by Voice Summit, the biggest voice conference that is put on annually.BackgroundShe started out as a dancer and actually has a degree in dance. She also worked in health and fitness for a long time and even owned a dance studio, but she realized that she wanted to do more on branding and content marketing strategy. She really loves the branding aspect of it.She heard about voice technology from Gary Vaynerchuk about 3 years ago and just fell in love with it. He talked about how we could connect with voice and Keri did some research on that and came across Voice Summit. She went to the first Voice Summit and loved it, so she reached out to Pete Erickson and asked how she could help with what they were doing, and Pete mentioned the Inside Voice podcast that they needed help with. They have so far done 100+ podcast episodes.Patterns in the Voice SpaceMost of the people involved in a lot of voice oriented projects are creatives like photographers, writers, dancers, and filmmakers. One of the major things she’s hearing about include the need to make voice inclusive with all types of male and female voices, and keeping data secure in the development of voice applications.Leveraging Voice to Build a BrandShe believes that voice should be an integral part of a business’ brand and content marketing strategy. She encourages businesses to first look at what their customers want and need before they can create voice applications.Sonic BrandingShe has a personal podcast and her own sonic brand for the podcast. She describes it as a sound (not just music) that people should be able to associate with a certain business or brand when they hear it.Voice Summit 2020It will be its third year and will be held from October 5th to 8th 2020 down in Washington D.C.The event outgrew it's previous location and they needed more space to hold the number of people who were attending. The new space in Washington has more room and access to major airports. There is a lot more voice related activities going on there and it's also where the new Amazon headquarters opened up.They are focusing on helping the voice technology community while also enabling them to connect with their potential clients.List of resources mentioned in this episodeThe Comprehensive Flash Briefing Formula CourseVoice Summit WebsiteKeri on LinkedinOther useful resources:Voice in Canada: The Flash BriefingComplete List of Alexa CommandsAlexa-Enabled and Controlled Devices in CanadaTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterAlexa in Canada Facebook PageAlexa in Canada Community Group on FacebookAlexa in Canada on InstagramPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.ca See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today on the Voicing Startups podcast I interview Zohaib, the founder of Resemble. Resemble creates high-quality synthetic voices that capture human emotions. Their goal is to democratize audio content and allow anyone to craft dynamic content in unique voices - all in real-time. They work with brands, media companies, creative agencies, and game studios to clone and scale existing voices or create completely fictitious voices that fit a character profile. This podcast starts with a background of what Resemble is and why Zohaib and his team ended up creating the product in the first place. We go on to talk about the business model, target market and customers to date. Before getting into a discussion of Deep Fakes and how Resemble is positioned to avoid them, we talked about the future of AR/VR and how this product fits well in that ecosystem. Dave Isbitski, Chief Evangelist, Amazon Alexa, on the power of Alexa for marketing, part 1 of 2.Dave and Emily talked about why voice is a departure from previous technology (leaving Tap, Type, & Swipe - entering Voice First) and how you can harness Alexa to learn more about your customers. Plus: how you can use voice as the ultimate frictionless up-sell. Full show notes and web player hereWe also answered a top question among marketers: how do you overcome discoverability challenges with early voice to get your Alexa skill found? Friendly reminder: please mute your Alexa device before listening.1-Click listen in your favorite podcast appSHOW NOTES:2:05: Dave has worked in web and mobile for decades: what is different about voice?3:40- “Voice cuts across all industries. From finance to CPG…” You’ll see people talking about voice in finance, then doctors and healthcare professionals about what does voice mean for patient care? And you’ll see others ask what does it mean for shopping and pay? Brand ask what it means for them and customer?3:32 “Every technology I’ve ever talked about has always had training, we had to teach customers how to do this first before they can tell us what they want.” - DaveDave Isbitksi, Chief Evangelist, Alexa - Amazon4:00 There is no learning curve with voice: it’s natural for everyone to speak5:54 Inclusivity:It’s not about how well you can code, it’s about how well you can converse (Dave mentioned this in his keynote at VOICE Summit 2019)7:10 The marketer’s bottleneck with IT - this is less a problem with voice (Emily)7:50 Ruder Finn / PR Week event where Dave made a point about organizational education about voice - how it’s not really new but is easier:8:30 “There must be a doc somewhere in your organization that can help you with voice” - a group is still responsible for teaching new tech (like with cloud) but getting people up to speed now is much easier9:40 Alexa can learn easily - these are just restful web services passing JSON across SSL request - which we are already doing on mobile. It calls the same API. The magic is that Alexa is taking normal human language and figuring out which function to call, vs you hitting a button or tapping a screen to trigger that call.10:25 Alexa stands on the shoulders of all the tech waves that came before11:00 Let's have a discussion about your customer who engages not in a silo but on phones, tablets, social, and other on-ramps11:10 Alexa Skills Kit enables you to teach Alexa how to have a conversation about things. “Set up parameters of a conversation our customers have with us.”11:45 Alexa Voice Service is why you see Alexa in cars, radio services, Windows desktop, and other mobile devices12:30 Upsell- with voice, this is the moment where your customer essentially already has their money out (movie theatre popcorn and Coke analogy). They’re already logged in. Brands can use their own POS like Domino’s does, or Amazon Pay - so it’s just very simple and natural in the moment to get an additional sale13:00 The real difference with voice is being in the moment.
