Just like a timeless melody, our conversation with composer Jongnic Bontemps, whose latest project is Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, was an unforgettable one. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Jongnic's musical journey began at an early age with a simple request. His mother really wanted to hear an organ in the house. The piano soon became Jongnic's best friend while his exploration grew to include performing in bands. Because the journey of a creative is often sinuous, we talk about how he ended up heading to Yale University to become a lawyer and after another pivot, landed what ended up to be a 15 year career in tech. He became one of a few Black chief technology officers in Silicon Valley until he heard a calling from a much higher source. We talk in-depth about the journey from law to music to software development and ultimately the world of post-production as he's composed for over 50 projects. We discuss the beauty of making and maintaining connections with other creators and the purposeful sustainability it can bring, which led Jongnic to composing for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. His impressive credentials include projects like, The Land, United Skates, Boomerang (TV series), The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel, Sharia, My Name Is Pauli Murray, Godfather of Harlem, Creed II, The Secret Life of Pets, Unbroken, The Imitation Game, Godzilla, Carrie and the video games, Call of Duty: WWII and Redfall. Katheryn Winnick is now known for her starring role as Lagertha in the critically acclaimed show Vikings on the History Channel. It took 14 years for Katheryn to find a role that truly showcased her unique strength as a double black belt holder in Tae Kwon Do and Karate. Her journey into acting began with getting fired from her first set due to her enthusiasm for the realism of the action, which led her to instinctively yell in a scene as a background artist. Undeterred, she confidently told her mother that one day she would become a lead actress who couldn't be fired. Katheryn's determination paid off as she not only became a lead actress but also gained critical acclaim, placing her on the shortlist for major studios. In addition to her acting career, Katheryn's business acumen led her to own three Tae Kwon Do studios by the age of 21, providing financial stability while pursuing her acting dreams. Her participation in the first season of "The It Factor" helped her secure an influential theatrical agent, and her bold choices in auditions caught the attention of casting directors on both coasts. By keeping an audition journal, Katheryn gained self-awareness and insight into her strengths and weaknesses, allowing her to craft a courageous and thoughtful career. Alongside her role in Vikings, she can be seen in The Dark Tower alongside Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba, as well as in the Call of Duty WWII video game. He later became a freelance writer, scoring Call of Duty: WWII, Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris and the most recent entry into the Mortal Kombat game universe, MORTAL KOMBAT 11 is among his most recent projects. His scores have earned him several awards and nominations from the Game Audio Network Guild, the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (D.I.C.E. Awards), and others.Mortal Kombat 11 was released in April 2019 from NetherRealm Studios for the Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Windows. In it, the story continues as Raiden's defeat of the evil Elder God, Shinnok, has drawn the ire of Kronika, the Keeper of Time, and upset her desired balance between good and evil. To restore stability in the realms, Kronika has only one option – rewind time to its beginning and restart history. Through the immersive story mode, players take on the role of various fighters from past and present Mortal Kombat eras, who must join forces to defeat Shao Khan's Outworld armies and solve the temporal crisis at stake. In this episode, Wilber Roget opens up his score for Mortal Kombat 11 and shares how he helped to define the protagnist forces versus the antagonist by utilizing acoustic East Asian instrumentation versus electronic performances of Middle Eastern influenced music respectively. He also delves into exactly how he reflected the crucial narrative element of time in his original score. The highly anticipated title from Epic Games has finally arrived. Fortnite is a "co-op sandbox survival game" where you build bases, fight off zombies and work together to collect massive amounts of loot. It was one of the first games announced for Unreal Engine 4 and is finally here. We break down the good and the bad. We also played through Tacoma and share our thoughts on that highly anticipated follow up to 2013's smash hit Gone Home, what many call the first "walking simulator." It's a sci-fi walking simulator where you land on a space station to discover what happened on the months leading up to today. In our news segment, we talk about a lot of new card games ironically such as one in the works from Gearbox and Valve's first game in years called Artifact. A lot of story details have emerged from Call of Duty WWII and we may actually be excited about this one! Finally, our discussion this week is all about microtransactions and loot boxes. Brett first wrote about this last week on his article titled "Put the Loot Box to Rest." We expand on this conversation with the group on the history of loot boxes and microtransactions, explore the good, the bad and what could make it work better. WELCOME BACK to The Inner Gamer podcast! We've returned from a big week in E3 where we were surprised, disappointed and blown away all at the same time. This episode is all about E3 2017. We open up with our impressions of the conference as a whole, how it was open to the public and some of the games we played (such as Super Mario Odyssey, South Park The Fractured But Whole, Far Cry 5, Call of Duty WWII, Assassin's Creed Origins and more!) Next, we break down each and every conference and cover the highlights from Electronic Arts, Bethesda, Microsoft Xbox, Sony, Ubisoft and Nintendo. Our predictions were pretty spot on as Star Wars Battlefront 2 looks incredible, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus was officially announced, the Xbox One X has been revealed, Bioware announced their new IP Anthem, Sony revealed the first gameplay from Spiderman, Ubisoft finally revealed Assassin's Creed Origins and Nintendo blew it out of the park with a new Yoshi, Kirby, Rocket League for the Switch and Metroid Prime 4. Finally, the team breaks down their best in show from E3. We cover a ton of content in this episode and if you missed E3 or just want to have a recap, this is the episode for you. We have a HUGE episode in store today and it's well worth the listen. Opening up our games segment is our reviews on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Puyo Puyo Tetris. Mario Kart 8 delivers ultimate multiplayer for the Nintendo Switch as does Puyo Puyo and they're worth listening to our reviews. We also review a lesser known game called Eon Alter where you use your phone to control the game. In our news segment, Prey is coming out next week plus we announce the free games for May. For news, we have the announcement of Call of Duty: WWII and the Nintendo New 2DS XL. Bethesda also teases some new games for E3 and Burnout creators are working on a new game. Finally, our last segment features a very special interview with the Creative Director of Giant Sparrow, Ian Dallas. Ian and his team created the popular game we reviewed last week "What Remains of Edith Finch." In this interview we delve deep into the story of the game, how the short story idea came to be, early influences for the game and much more about Ian and his design philosophies in general.
