David Oh, President & CEO of the Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia discussed the business building and business-to-business opportunities they offer. We spoke of his long career in public-service, as a three-term City Councilman and as a Mayoral Candidate this past year, and why he is now working with the Asian-American business community. He discussed the various groups that make up this sector, including immigrants, from the ‘50s through today and their following generations, and the many countries who identify as Asian or Pacific Islanders, without sharing language or cultural interests. We discussed the opportunities the Chamber offers, from business planning for entrepreneurs, to networking and introductions to funding steams. He notes that many high-profile companies in the area do not have Asian-sounding names, and so go unrecognized as part of their community. He also voiced his concerns that many businesses within the community close upon the retirement of the founders, he is looking for ways to pass these businesses on to the next generation. David discussed some of the recent success stories for the chamber, including increased membership and expanding staff to 3 full-time and office hours to 5 days a week, creating new initiatives for the construction and building trades, food and beverage and transportation companies, wrong on a coalition of AAPI news media organizations, and fundraising, with the AAPI Heritage Month Gala a huge triumph. [WLHA 012]: We Live Here Auténtico! | The Hispanic Chamber | Connection and Community Central Today we spend time with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan St. Louis - a connection and central resource in the St. Louis region for 40 years. From the Latino Festival in O'Fallon, the Hispanic festival in Florissant, dance clubs in mid-town and cuisine from restaurants representing many different countries, St. Louis' Latino culture is booming and is a vibrant reflection of our growing Hispanic population. The median age of Hispanic St. Louisans is 25 compared to 36 of the general population and the percentage of Latinos in the region roughly doubled. Most of the growth in the past 20 years has come in Madison, St. Clair, St. Charles and St. Louis counties. In St. Louis, Latino residents now account for more than 5% of the city's population. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce purposely creates a safe and open environment for people that have similar backgrounds of experiences. The Chamber has specific tools that address some of the needs of the Hispanic community in our region. The staff is bilingual in Spanish and English, so they can help entrepreneurs in their preferred language. Like other chambers, the Hispanic Chamber does not only serve Latino businesses, it serves everyone. Happy 40th Anniversary!! We are very lucky to have a wealth of resources in our region to help individuals create and build new businesses. That includes the St. Louis Regional Chamber, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Asian American Chamber of Commerce as well as the newly formed local chapter of the US Black Chamber. At the heart of what they do is build community and connect people in meaningful ways that lead to success. During this episode, we have a full house of Chamber representatives in studio to help us better understand how they add value to and stimulate growth in our local economy. From promoting international trade and helping immigrant entrepreneurs grow their businesses to connecting their own varied constituencies with each other as well as the larger business community, these Chambers are hard at work recruiting and promoting the business leaders who are shaping economic growth and prosperity in our region. Hear from guest Al Li, Veta Jeffrey, Marvin Steele and Sarah Arnosky about how their organizations are advancing racial equity, creating minority business growth accelerators and increasing entrepreneurial success through networking and connectedness. Born Leader - Episode 5: Building Businesses and Community Together Lessons from Michel Zajur of the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Born Leader is a podcast founded on the belief that everyone is a born leader and there are many paths to discovering your own potential. We explore leadership through interviews with and profiles about everyday people who demonstrate we’re all born leaders. Hypatian Institute, Inc. Founder and CEO Gaea L. Honeycutt hosts Born Leader. In this episode, we welcome Michel Zajur, Founder and CEO of the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, an organization dedicated to building bridges to create, promote and enhance business opportunities for its membership by providing linkages with special emphasis on the Hispanic community. Our discussion focused on the trajectory of his career and how Michel’s business savvy and commitment to serving the Richmond community evolved into a entity that fosters cultural and economic exchange. We begin with the foundations of his work ethic, the challenges and rewards of growing a family business, and how the family business built connections with the community. Then Michel gets into the details of how how approached building the Chamber, his lessons learned, and the intersecting cultural education work of his wife Lisa. And we wrap up the interview discussing what makes Richmond the ideal location for business and the Virginia Hispanic Chamber’s headquarters, and the mentor who inspires him and drives the philosophy behind the Chamber. Also, we feature the first installment of our Two-Minute Leadership Moment. This episodes essay was inspired by Michel Zajur's interview, highlighting an interconnected set of ideas, or life lessons. First, you don’t get where you are on your own. The second idea is that you never know the impact your words or actions might have on others. Two things that have lead Michel to success and transformed not only his life, but many others. We’d love to hear from you in the comments section or on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter (@HypatianInst). In the next episode of Born Leader, we’ll speak with Ulysses James, Maestro of the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association.
