V for Vegan: Mantra for Sustainability The conventional theory of change is that in order for the Vegan movement to grow, the Out Vegans must reach out to the Closeted Vegans and convince them through the health, environmental, ethical and spiritual aspects of Veganism to come out of the closet and act on their true feelings regarding the systematic and unnecessary exploitation of animals (including humans) on Planet A.n During my visit to India, my interactions with Out Vegans in India have convinced me that we may have this backwards. Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, librettist, teacher, and dog lady Kimaya Diggs grew up surrounded by music. In her family music was a tool for connection. Kimaya's 2018 debut album, ‘Breastfed,' puts together the story of her upbringing through dreamy soul-folk jams. Even though she had been a musician all her life, she experienced a steep learning curve when it came to recording in the studio. She quickly figured out how the complex processes of mixing and mastering can impact how an audience receives your music, AND how frustrating it can be to play guitar to a click track. These lessons learned left Kimaya excited to get to work on her second album. In the meantime she had adopted a traumatized racing greyhound, and tragically lost her mom to breast cancer. There was so much love and loss to process, and Kimaya was figuring out how to share these precious pieces of her life while still honoring her mom's privacy and her own healing journey. You might think that as a result, the album would comprise 45 minutes of whispered meditations on the great beyond. But ‘Quincy' is an album bursting with joy and exuberant grooves.Kimaya's husband, Jacob, plays in her band and contributed music for this new album. One of the most interesting parts of our conversation was when Kimaya shared how she manages to keep both her marriage and her creative partnership healthy at the same time. Here's a hint: the secret has to do with co-writing.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Kimaya Diggs wants you to ask her about her mother. One thing Kimaya can tell you about her is that before she died, Kimaya decided to take a pottery class, which her mother asked to join in on. She was incredibly prolific: she created around 300 pieces, but didn't like to glaze her work as much as she liked throwing pots. So when she died, she left behind around 60 unglazed pieces that the owner of the studio was nice enough to keep so that Kimaya could glaze them herself and the studio even named a color of glaze after Kimaya's mom. Kimaya's mom grappled with cancer for 12 years and she decided not to tell most people in her life that she had cancer, which was difficult for Kimaya to grapple with. When she found out, she was 16, and her younger sisters were 14 and 10. She immediately started making contingency plans, figuring out when her sister's annual physicals were, getting a driver's license as early as possible in case she would need to drive them to school. Kimaya is a songwriter, and her first album, which came out before her mother died, was about grieving her mother, though she had to sing about it in vague terms. Kimaya had been curious about death from a young age: when she was a child, she would write her will in her school composition notebooks, causing some alarm to her parents. She feels that in a lot of ways she has had an easier time of thinking about her own mortality than her mom did. She writes about her mom a lot nowadays, writing out conversations she never had with her mom as if they were scenes from a play. She struggles with the temptation to write what she herself wishes her mom would have said in these conversations compared to what she thinks her mom would have said in reality. She also wishes that more people would have been supportive to her partner in grief, who she has been together with for 9 years. In many ways, he was grieving his own loss just as much as she was, but she was the only one who got the cards and offers of support from friends and family, and she wasn't as able to support him while he was grieving. She hopes that in the future, offering support to everyone affected by a death, even if it seems like they would not be as obviously affected, will be far more normalized. Kimaya knows her grief will be with her for the rest of her life, and will always do that wack thing where it suddenly and unexpectedly gets super heavy on some days, but at least now she feels like she has a better handle on what she is dealing with. Dr. Sailesh Rao imparts his wisdom on the environmental impact of our food choices. He discusses his philosophy on veganism and the effect of bringing animals into the world just to exploit them. The mere existence of these domesticated animals displaces wild animals in nature and invokes extinction. Unwilling to participate in the exploitation of these animals, Dr. Rao became vegan in 2008. He explains that every individual choice impacts everybody on Earth and suggests that instead of eating animals, we should come into harmony with nature. With a vast engineering background, Dr. Rao discusses the quantifiable facts of the likelihood of mass vertebrate extinction by 2026. Concluding that the problem with society is seeing ourselves as separate from nature, Dr. Rao clearly lays out that the solution includes rejecting the mentality of consumerism and supremacism and accepting collaborative thinking. He speaks of transitioning from a narcissistic species to a compassionate, climate regulating, caretaker species. Dr. Elisa Haransky Beck, Dr. Rao's interviewer, invites Dr. Rao's charming granddaughter, Kimaya, on the podcast to make a special guest appearance. Sailesh Rao works with systems. He spent 20 years of his career working to bring the internet to life. Now, he’s using his systemic approach to fulfill a pinky promise to his granddaughter—make the world vegan by 2026. To Sailesh, it’s all interconnected—the environment, our health, and the animals—once we install certain systems of normalized non-violence, these global issues can be resolved. Sailesh’s calm, solutions-based perspective and compassionate heart are evident in his work, making his arguments appealing to both the number-crunching crowds and the bleeding hearts. His insights may seem aspirational, but when he breaks them down, the solution seems so simple. We were transfixed by this conversation, and we guarantee you’ll walk away with a greater purpose and intention to do better in the world.    What we discuss in this episode:   - Practical, systematic solutions toward a more sustainable and compassionate future.   - The importance of biodiversity and how to reclaim it.   - What is normalized non-violence?   - His pinky promise to his granddaughter to make the world vegan by 2026   - The problem with “growth culture.”   - Video of Sailesh’s granddaughter, Kimaya: https://twitter.com/AliciaSilv/status/1194772808066203650   - Find Sailesh on the Pinky Promise Tour   - Sailesh’s book, Carbon Yoga: The Vegan Metamorphosis   - Climatehealers.org   Connect with Switch4Good   - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2toqAmlQpwR1HDF_KKfGg   - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Switch4Good/   - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/switch4good/   - Twitter: https://twitter.com/Switch4GoodOrg   - Website: switch4good.org

With influences spanning many genres, Kimaya Diggs melds the folky acrobatics of Joni Mitchell, the jazz stylings of Ella Fitzgerald, the catchy soul of Lianne LaHavas, and yet has something you can't quite put your finger on that makes her entirely unique. Her mastery of her voice is the focal point of each performance, and a transfixing experience. Her debut album, Breastfed, is a chronicle of bittersweet growing pains, expansive and generous. Whether roaring along with reckless urgency or irreverently recounting painful memories, Breastfed wrangles the growing-up narrative in a boldfaced, darkly humorous way.
