The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) is responsible for servicing nearly 10,000 miles of pipeline and over a million customers. So, you may be wondering what all this has to do with rural America. Geographically speaking, St. Louis sits in the middle of the heartland and is known as the gateway to the west. There are also a number of world-class agriculture companies located there, like Monsanto, Purina and Anheuser Busch (yes, beer is made using grains grown in rural America). And, if you think about rural America as a mindset and a lifestyle, there are thousands of rural Americans who live there. From the Latino Festival in O'Fallon, the Hispanic festival in Florissant, dance clubs in mid-town and cuisine from restaurants representing many different countries, St. Louis' Latino culture is booming and is a vibrant reflection of our growing Hispanic population. The median age of Hispanic St. Louisans is 25 compared to 36 of the general population and the percentage of Latinos in the region roughly doubled. Most of the growth in the past 20 years has come in Madison, St. Clair, St. Charles and St. Louis counties. In St. Louis, Latino residents now account for more than 5% of the city's population. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce purposely creates a safe and open environment for people that have similar backgrounds of experiences. The Chamber has specific tools that address some of the needs of the Hispanic community in our region. The staff is bilingual in Spanish and English, so they can help entrepreneurs in their preferred language. As patients infected with the delta variant of the COVID-19 virus fill hospitals in parts of Missouri, and the virus spreads new infections around the country, Washington University data scientists and infectious diseases specialists are urging people to mask up again, regardless of vaccination status. The researchers say that although vaccination remains remarkably effective, masking and other public health practices that slowed the spread prior to the availability of vaccines are necessary again. Clay Dunagan, MD, a professor of medicine, senior vice president and chief clinical officer for BJC HealthCare and a member of the Metropolitan St. Louis Pandemic Task Force says that as case numbers rise, public health measures have become more important. Dunagan, and fellow infectious diseases specialist Hilary M. Babcock, MD, a professor of medicine and medical director of infection prevention and occupational infection prevention for BJC HealthCare, say even if more people get vaccinated, it will be weeks before they are protected, and during those weeks, people will need to turn back to the practices that protected them before vaccines became available. Meanwhile, Philip R.O. Payne, PhD, the Janet and Bernard Becker Professor and director of the Institute for Informatics, associate dean for health information and data science and the chief data scientist at the School of Medicine, says computer models his team has created continue to predict a rapid increase in infections in St. Louis and in the surrounding area. And he says those models don't show a peak yet, meaning we could be in the current wave of infections for quite some time. The EHOC seeks to ensure equal access to housing and places of public accommodation for all people through education, counseling, investigation, and enforcement.It can be tempting to imagine that, since the Fair Housing Act has been in place for over 50 years now, housing discrimination is a thing of the past. But, as you'll hear in this discussion, housing discrimination is alive and well. Even if it wasn't, the legacy of past housing discrimination is still with us today.The median white family in the U.S. has a net worth that is roughly 10 times that of the median black family, and home equity, or the lack thereof, is the single greatest contributor to that gap. I am no expert on housing discrimination, historical or current, but I am an expert on building wealth and how compound interest works, and, from that lens, it's easy to understand why this gap persists. Prior to the passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968, it was legal to discriminate against someone for the purpose of housing based on the color of their skin, which means that, even if the Fair Housing Act had magically fixed everything overnight, most black families had to start from scratch on their home equity building journey, while white families had been on that journey for decades with lots of help from the federal government along the way.So, it makes sense that housing policy is one of the most important places to focus if we're trying to right the wrongs of our past. The EHOC, like so many nonprofits in our area, is working hard not only to provide relief to those who are being wronged currently, but to change the way our region operates so that we can prevent these problems in the future. And, as you'll hear in the interview, this isn't just a racial issue. The eviction crisis advocates fear is on the horizon will likely have a disproportionate impact on communities of color, single female-led households, and households with children. That's according to a new report from the Metropolitan St. Louis Equal Housing & Opportunity Council, which found that more than 5,000 evictions have been filed in the city of St. Louis and St. Louis County between March 2020 and January 2021.

On August 3, 2019, he was sworn in as Grand Polemarch (International President) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated.Before Monsanto, he was Special Chief Counsel in the Office for the Missouri Attorney General where he Co-led the lawsuit against the tobacco industry. That lawsuit resulted in a 6.7 billion dollar settlement for Missouri, which is still the largest in the state's history. Shelton has served in many civic and professional organizations. He is Past President of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, and the St. Louis Bar Foundation and is the first African American ever elected to those positions. He is Past President of the Missouri Bar Association, the second African American to hold that position and the first, and only one, from St. Louis. Shelton served on the governing boards of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, the NAACP, the Missouri Lottery Commission, St. Louis Children's Hospital Development Board, the St. Louis University Board of Regents, the University City School Board and was President of the Lincoln University Board of Curators. He is Past-President of the Legal Services of Eastern Missouri Board of Directors and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Fathers and Families Support Center in St. Louis. He currently serves as a member on the Missouri Bar Association Board of Trustees and is Vice President of the Missouri Development Finance Board, a body that funds major development projects across the State of Missouri. He is also a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of United Way of Greater St. Louis. Shelton earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kansas where he was Captain of the basketball team, a Juris Doctorate degree from St. Louis University, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Dudley delves into how to save the African American community through social activism and focused leadership with President and CEO of Urban League Michael P. McMillan. FULL Guest Bio: Michael P. McMillan is the President and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, Inc., a nonprofit organization that has been providing social services to the metropolitan St. Louis community since 1918. The St.Louis Urban League is the largest affiliate of the NUL movement headquartered in New York City. The Urban League's mission is “to assist African Americans and others throughout the region in securing economic self-reliance, social equality and civil rights.” Each year, the Urban League serves more than 100,000 residents with economic opportunity, educational excellence, community empowerment, civil rights and advocacy programs. As an advocate for social and economic parity, McMillan speaks on behalf of Urban League constituents. In response to the crisis in Ferguson, McMillan created the Save Our Sons program in St. Louis County to help over 850 African-American men find jobs and hosted the Urban League's largest job fair in its history at St. Louis Community College - Florissant Valley with over 5,000 participants. He has also charted the building of the Urban League Community Empowerment Center of Ferguson on the site of a convenience store that was burned down during the crisis. Opened in 2017, the Ferguson Community Empowerment Center houses the Save Our Sons program along with social service partners: The Salvation Army, Midland Division; the University of Missouri Extension and the Lutheran Hope Center. In July 2017, McMillan and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis hosted the largest National Urban League Conference in history with nearly 25,000 in attendance. McMillan has received hundreds of awards and commendations from various organizations and was recently inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame as its youngest and as one of the Ebony Power 100 Most Influential African Americans in the United States. Additionally, he is the recipient of the 2013 Trumpet Award for Community Service; the Whitney M. Young and the John Mack Leadership Awards from the National Urban League; Chairman's Award presented by the St. Louis Minority Supplier Development Council; a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Montford Point Marines and for the Salute to Women in Leadership Awards program.
