Email : asiattitudes (at) gmail.comHébergé par Ausha.

Composer Viet Cuong joins us to discuss the role that marching band played in his formative years and the impact it continues to have on his current career. He shares his approach to composing for small ensembles, preparing students to take advantage of new and innovative tools, and the skills vital for success as a freelance musician. We finish with a conversation about what it means to “sound like tomorrow”. Called “alluring” and “wildly inventive” by The New York Times, the “irresistible” (San Francisco Chronicle) music of American composer Viet Cuong (b. 1990) has been commissioned and performed on six continents by musicians and ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, Eighth Blackbird, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Sō Percussion, Alarm Will Sound, Atlanta Symphony, Sandbox Percussion, Albany Symphony, PRISM Quartet, Orchestra of St. Luke's, and Dallas Winds, among many others. Viet's music has been featured in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, National Gallery of Art, and Library of Congress, and his works for wind ensemble have amassed hundreds of performances worldwide, including at Midwest, WASBE, and CBDNA conferences. He was recently featured in The Washington Post‘s “21 for '21: Composers and performers who sound like tomorrow.” In his music Viet enjoys exploring the unexpected and whimsical, and he is often drawn to projects where he can make peculiar combinations and sounds feel enchanting or oddly satisfying. His recent works thus include a percussion quartet concerto, tuba concerto, snare drum solo, and, most recently, a concerto for two oboes. This eclecticism extends to the range of musical groups he writes for, and he has worked with ensembles ranging from middle school bands to Grammy-winning orchestras and chamber groups. Viet is also passionate about bringing different facets of the contemporary music community together, and he will have opportunities to do so with an upcoming concerto for Eighth Blackbird with the United States Navy Band. He recently began his tenure as the California Symphony's 2020-2023 Young American Composer-in-Residence, where he and the symphony will develop three new orchestral works together over three years. Viet is currently on the music theory and composition faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He holds degrees in music composition from the Curtis Institute of Music (Artist Diploma), Princeton University (MFA), and the Peabody Conservatory (BM/MM). His mentors include Jennifer Higdon, David Serkin Ludwig, Donnacha Dennehy, Steve Mackey, Dan Trueman, Dmitri Tymoczko, Kevin Puts, and Oscar Bettison. During his studies, he held the Daniel W. Dietrich II Composition Fellowship at Curtis, Naumburg and Roger Sessions Fellowships at Princeton, and Evergreen House Foundation scholarship at Peabody, where he was also awarded the Peabody Alumni Award (the Valedictorian honor) and Gustav Klemm Award. The transcript for this episode can be found here. For more information about Viet Cuong, please visit his website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and SoundCloud.
In our Summer Spotlight Series Episode 1, Viet Cuong joins us for a conversation about his musical and compositional journey and how he has made a place for himself and his music within our field.

It is for the gastronomical adventurers, the innovators — the ones whose palates are willing to welcome experimental flavors and whose eyes take delight in the harmony of colors in a plate, says Chef Peter Cuong Franklin. In today's episode of Vietnam Innovators, Hao Tran and Peter look back at the Anan Saigon's journey, and why its 100-dollar banh mi remains a big hit.

Websites: http://liveandexcel.com/about/ and https://www.cuongnhu.com/ “THREE STRIKES AND I AM STILL IN” I should have been dead three different times. First in 1968, as a three-year-old boy with an older and younger brother. We were in the underground hiding place when the North Vietnamese soldiers overtook the city of Hue during the Lunar New Year. At this same time, my mother was giving birth to my baby sister. The gunshots and bombs were dropping around us for two straight weeks and miraculously, none hit our hiding place. “FREEDOM or DEATH” Secondly in 1972, I contracted malaria and was bedridden and hospitalized for nine days. It was heaven-sent that an underweight and modern medicine deprived child survived. Lastly, the communists took over Southern Vietnam in April of 1975 and after two years of house arrest, in 1977, our family took on the motto: “Freedom or Death”. We decided to escape through the South China Sea in a fishing boat to nowhere, hoping to be rescued. After living in an old, battered boat for five nights and four days, we were rescued by a large merchant ship that saw our ant-like boat in open sea. After staying at a refugee camp in Indonesia for five and half months, we were finally accepted and sponsored to come to America and live in Gainesville, Florida.

Episode topic: The experience of eating Guest: Cuong Nguyen 1. Everyone's relationship and experience with eating can vary! Mindful eating can change the way you approach food and even make it a more enjoyable experience. Cooking and offering food can be a meaningful way of expressing love and care in various cultures. Cuong discusses how this was prevalent in his family and his parents are Vietnamese. 2. Brave Steps: Step One: Watch a video/documentary about a specific food Step Two: Eat that specific food at a restaurant Step Three: Create that dish yourself and see how your dish compares to the restaurant's dish 3. People's connection to food can be a big part of who they are, a big part of their culture, a way to connect with friends and family, which is certainly the case for Cuong. Whether you plan your day around your meals or your meals around your day- you will see two different perspectives when it comes to eating meals and the meaning behind them. Next time you eat with someone and they say they "like" their food, maybe ask them what about the food specifically- do they like? Is it a specific flavor? A specific texture? A blend of both? My dialogue with Cuong Lu, Buddhist teacher and prison chaplain in the Netherlands, was by far the most moving experience of my podcasting life. Cuong’s wisdom and limitless compassion brought me to tears several times during our time together. He was born in Vietnam and grew up in the midst of war, only knowing fighting until his mother moved them to the Netherlands when he was twelve years old and he experienced friendliness for the first time. He spent many years as a monk with Thich Nhat Hanh and then became a lay Buddhist teacher in 2009. His is a deeply relational dharma characterized by complete embodiment of interbeing, the empty inseparability of all beings. His remarkable new book, The Buddha in Jail: Restoring Lives, Finding Hope and Freedom recounts his unique application of the Buddhist teachings for prisoners who, he asserts “are often able to understand the Dharma more quickly than those whose lives have been easier.” Cuong is on book tour July 22 - Aug 2 in New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Madison, and several venues in the San Francisco Bay Area. You can find his schedule in the show notes and I urge any of you who can, to attend and meet this remarkable man. Visit my Patreon page and check out the offers!I had the pleasure of meeting Phuong and Cuong from Hanoi Free Tour Guides last year while visiting the capital. Hanoi Free Tour Guides is a fantastic organization that offers free tours for anyone visiting Hanoi. It’s a wonderful way to connect with the local culture as all guides are local students studying English eager to meet foreigners and show them around their city. You can basically ask for any kind of tour for the whole day if you like. You only have to pay for transportation if required and meals or drinks for your guide. There is no need to tip, in fact they will refuse any money offered.Only a few months earlier in Hanoi famous TV travel host and chef Anthony Bourdain hosted a special dinner with President Obama. The featured dish? A bowl of bun cha, the famous bbq pork meal of Hanoi.Although I do not eat pork myself I thought it would be interesting to talk about the dish that had gained so much attention in the United States and around the world from this famous meeting. We walked to a restaurant in the old quarter of Hanoi famous for bun cha. Phuong actually theorized that the Obama/Bourdain meal wasn’t hosted here because of the logistics of trying to protect the president in such a tight space. We had so much planned for this walk of the old quarter that was originally a Facebook live broadcast but only minutes after visiting the restaurant a huge tropical downpour started so we were forced to find refuge in a cafe. The rain lasted so long we were unable to continue the broadcast and were left with some interesting talk about bun cha and later a short conversation about ancestor worship in Vietnam. Thanks so much for listening!
