In this episode of Madison's Notes, we're joined by Professors Amna Khalid and Jeff Snyder for a thought-provoking discussion on the state of free speech in today's polarized climate. We explore the role of the university as a space for critical inquiry, the challenges to academic freedom, and the growing tensions between open discourse and political pressures. Professors Khalid and Snyder share their perspectives on the biggest threats to free speech today, offering insight into how institutions of higher learning can navigate these complex issues while remaining true to their educational mission. Tune in for a deep dive into the intersection of free expression, education, and the broader societal forces shaping our public discourse. Amna Khalid is an Associate Professor in the department of History at Carleton College. She specializes in modern South Asian history, the history of medicine and the global history of free expression. Khalid is the author of multiple book chapters on the history of public health in nineteenth-century India, with an emphasis on the connections between Hindu pilgrimages and the spread of epidemics. She completed a Bachelor's Degree at Lahore University of Management Sciences and earned both an MPhil in Development Studies and a DPhil in History from Oxford University. Growing up under a series of military dictatorships in Pakistan, Khalid has a strong interest in issues relating to free expression. She hosts a podcast and accompanying blog called “Banished,” which explores censorship controversies in the past and present. Jeff Snyder is an Associate Professor in the department of Educational Studies at Carleton College. He is a historian of education, whose work examines questions about race, national identity and the purpose of public education in a diverse, democratic society. Snyder is the author of the book, Making Black History: The Color Line, Culture and Race in the Age of Jim Crow. He holds a BA from Carleton, an EdM in Learning and Teaching from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a PhD in the History of Education from New York University. Before pursuing graduate studies, Snyder taught English to Speakers of Other Languages in the Czech Republic, France, China, India, Nepal and the United States. Khalid and Snyder speak regularly together about academic freedom, free speech and campus politics at colleges and universities across the country. They write frequently on these issues for newspapers and magazines, including The Chronicle of Higher Education, The New Republic and The Washington Post. During the 2022/23 academic year, Khalid and Snyder were fellows with the University of California National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement. Their research focused on threats to academic freedom in Florida, the state at the epicenter of the conservative “culture wars” movement to encourage state intervention in public school classrooms. Based on interviews they conducted with Florida faculty members, Khalid and Snyder submitted an amicus brief supporting the plaintiffs who are challenging the Stop WOKE Act. Rachel received her first degree in Hertfordshire in the UK (near London).  When she finished, she decided to have some time out of education and worked in London in the financial industry for three years.   In 1989, she moved with her husband to be to Hong Kong and got a job lecturing in English and Business Communication at the Open University.  Whilst in Hong Kong, she also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and and a Masters Degree in Lifelong learning.   In Hong Kong, she also had two children, her eldest child was born in 1994 and suffered with ear infections and reacted badly to antibiotics.  In desperation, she attended a six week evening course in homeopathy with a homeopath who was practising in Hong Kong, but interestingly born in Tasmania, and her and her family's lives changed.  Homeopathy then became the basis of the healthcare in her family. Rachel moved back to the UK, back to the country in Suffolk, in 1999 and settled into family life on a small holding. She continued to work in distance education online while the children were small, but 15 years ago, she decided to retrain  to be a Homeopath  and has now been qualified and practicing in Suffolk for ten years. Alongside Homeopathy, she also offers Bach Flower Therapy, Homeobotanical therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Kinesiology (using NAET which is an allergy elimination technique) and Presentchild® Translation. Presentchild® is a therapy that can really help to improve communication within the family unit. During lockdown, she also trained to be an end of life counsellor using the Before I Go method. She also teaches for the organisation 'Homeopathy at Wellie Level' which teaches farmers how to use homeopathy with their animals. Rachel loves to combine her educational background with her profession now, teaching people how to use Homeopathy effectively.    You can reach Rachel here:  www.rachelwelshhealth.co.uk rachelwelshhealth@gmail.com If you would like to support the Homeopathy Hangout Podcast, please consider making a donation by visiting www.EugenieKruger.com and click the DONATE button at the top of the site. Introduction: In this episode of the "Admittedly" podcast, host Thomas Caleel interviews Delenn Ganyo, a colleague in college admissions and professional academic tutor. They discuss the topic of dual enrollment, middle colleges, and the benefits and challenges of pursuing non-traditional educational paths. Summary of Key Points: 1. Introduction to Dual Enrollment: Dual enrollment allows high school students to take college-level courses alongside their high school curriculum, often earning college credits. This approach provides students with an accelerated learning path and can lead to early graduation or advanced standing in college. 2. Middle Colleges as an Accelerated Learning Model: Middle colleges represent a "supercharged" dual enrollment model, allowing students to earn significant college credits and potentially complete an associate's degree while still in high school. Delenn shares personal experiences of thriving in this environment and highlights the importance of student-driven motivation. 3. Comparing Dual Enrollment and AP Courses: Unlike AP courses taught by high school teachers, dual enrollment classes are taught by college instructors and often provide guaranteed transferable credits. This distinction makes dual enrollment a potentially more reliable option for students aiming to cut down on college time or costs. 4. Benefits of Middle Colleges: Attending a middle college can provide academic challenges, make students more competitive in university applications, and allow for early specialization or interdisciplinary study. Delenn discusses the personal advantages and opportunities they gained from this educational path. 5. Considerations for Non-Traditional Educational Paths: While middle colleges and dual enrollment offer exciting opportunities, they may not be suitable for everyone. Students should assess their own academic interests and readiness, ensuring that their educational path aligns with their goals and learning style. Conclusion: Thomas Caleel and guest Delenn Ganyo emphasize the importance of understanding one's educational preferences and exploring non-traditional paths like dual enrollment and middle colleges. These options can offer accelerated learning and unique opportunities for students who are passionate about academics and eager to challenge themselves. About Thomas Caleel: Thomas is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania. After earning his MBA at the Wharton School of Business in 2003, he moved to Silicon Valley. For three years, he was Director of MBA Admissions and Financial Aid at Wharton. He worked closely with admissions professionals, students, alumni, and professors to curate the best possible MBA class. Thomas has been an entrepreneur his entire life in the fields of finance, agriculture, wellness, and sporting goods. As the founder of Global Education Opportunities LLC, he works as a high-level admissions advisor to help families and students achieve their education goals. Thomas started the podcast Admittedly because he is passionate about demystifying the application process for all parents and applicants. About Delenn Ganyo (@delennganyo): Delenn Ganyo is an academic tutor and admissions coach from Santa Barbara, California. They completed their Master's in English in December 2024, graduating previously from UC Santa Barbara in 2021 with Bachelor's degrees in chemistry, anthropology, and writing. Attaining their first college degree—an Associates of mathematics—the day before their high school graduation, Delenn has placed a lifelong emphasis on education and academic achievement. Delenn's experience tutoring includes academic subjects such as English composition, creative writing, mathematics, and chemistry, as well as standardized tests including the new digital SAT. In this last episode of Season 10, our host Sakura Hamada expands the discussion of newly arrived students to include the community college level. Her guest is Kathryn Long from Clackamas Community College, who explains that adult newly arrived college students may not be actually newly arrived in this country because of registration timelines. They often differ from K-12 students, too, because of financial and work-related challenges. Educators should be aware of the students' wide variety of backgrounds, some with previously earned degrees from other countries and others lacking any higher education experience. Even though she is a teacher of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), Kathryn teaches much more than English language skills, also helping her students to navigate American conversation, including cultural norms surrounding questions, compliments, and requests. She suggests several ways to converse with adults from other cultures with respect and understanding.    Resources Immigrant Students in Oregon Higher Education  ESOL at Clackamas Community College Kathryn suggests OER (Open Educational Resources) texts to reduce financial hardships on students. I am Dalton Wesley-Goins MacBeth. I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and developed Cerebral Palsy shortly after birth due to being born at 27 weeks. I was raised in southeastern Ohio in two Pentecostal denominations: the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) and the Assemblies of God. As I grew, I was always curious about faith and started to discern a call to ministry after being baptized at five and starting to speak in tongues at 8. When I was fifteen, I moved to Nicaragua and served as Pentecostal missionary for a year during my senior year of high school.  The next six years, I spent at Lee University (the Church of God college) studying a B.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, a B.A. in Theology, and an M.A. in Theology. During this process, I also became an ordained minister in the Church of God. Since 2018, I have had to wrestle with queerness, racism, Christian nationalism, and COVID-19 in a way that has led me to settle and seek ordination in the United Methodist Church. I am an avid reader, history butt, traveler, Cincinnati and Ohio State sports fan. Grey's Anatomy fan, and Swiftie! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb Schools Wants to Rejoin Map Lawsuit as Elections Board Settles The Cobb County School District is seeking to rejoin a lawsuit challenging a school board map that's alleged to be racially gerrymandered. In July, a federal judge ruled that the school district couldn't be held liable but didn't rule on the map's merits. The Cobb County Board of Elections, the only remaining defendant, is settling with the plaintiffs, declining to defend the map. The school district alleges collusion between the elections board and the plaintiffs to favor Democrats. The lawsuit accuses the map of discriminating against communities of color. The school district is appealing to rejoin the case, and it's uncertain who will ultimately defend the map.......…….Get more stories like this from mdjonline.com     STORY 2: Police Investigate Double Homicide at South Cobb Drive The Cobb Police Department is investigating a double homicide at the 4800 block of South Cobb Drive. Initial findings suggest a lone suspect approached the establishment, shot and killed two individuals, and then fled in a vehicle. The suspect's vehicle was tracked using Flock cameras. Officers located the suspect's vehicle, and the incident ended when the suspect took their own life. This appears to be an isolated incident involving known individuals, and there is no current threat to the public. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Cobb County Police Tip Hotline at 770-499-4111.   STORY 3: Cobb Commission Moves Forward With 2 Trails in County Master Plan Cobb County is progressing with its Chattahoochee River Trail Pilot project, with the Board of Commissioners approving the start of engineering design for the second phase of the two-mile trail. The $3 million allocated for this phase includes $620,000 for the design of a one-mile section by engineering firm Thomas & Hutton. The first phase is already under construction, set to be completed around spring 2026. Commissioner Keli Gambrill opposed the project, citing concerns about funding from a 2016 special-purpose local-option sales tax. Additionally, the commission approved the concept for a four-mile trail connecting Powder Springs to Austell, expecting funding from grants and SPLOST funds. This trail will enhance the county's greenway and trail network. ......................…..(pause) We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Surveillance footage at Bowlero captured Levey entering the women's restroom, where he was confronted by the victim after she noticed him attempting to record her. How can we support educators in the wake of a significant change, such as integrating newcomers into schools after dissolving all designated newcomer centers? What techniques can be used to best support teachers who are inexperienced with newcomers, including structuring PD and harnessing campus leadership? What is a good approach when preparing staff, families, and other stakeholders for a significant structural change to a school program such as this? We're closing out Season 10 of the Highest Aspirations podcast with a topic that is important for everyone working in schools. While your district may not currently have large numbers of newcomers, it is almost certain teachers in your schools will be lucky enough to work with students coming to this country for a variety of reasons. We can learn a lot from colleagues working in places where newcomers have been part of the fabric of their school communities for decades. One such school district is Katy ISD, just outside of Houston, Texas. Katy has been known for its newcomer centers for years - so much so that people from other districts have visited them to learn more about how to create similar programs. But the disruption caused by the pandemic forced district leaders at Katy to make significant changes - and the result has been magical.  I sat down with Kimberly Mitchell, Instructional Officer for Secondary ESL at Katy ISD to talk about how the challenge her district was facing turned into an opportunity, and how other districts can learn from their journey. From change management to rolling out PD programs with very little time, Kimberly shares a wealth of ideas and resources that will encourage you to rethink traditional newcomer programs and energize teachers in the face of significant transitions.  I hope you enjoy this last episode of the season. We'll be back in August for Season 11, but in the meantime, please visit our EL Community to access all our free resources, including every episode of the Highest Aspirations podcast.  Kimberly Mitchell holds a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and a Master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on literacy from the University of Texas at Arlington. She began her career in Alvin, Texas teaching English as a Second Language at the high school and junior high levels. Since then she has worked in the Office of Other Languages for Katy ISD in Texas.
