In today's episode we speak with filmmaker Sonita Gale, about her award-winning documentary film Hostile. Sonita tells us how Britain's "hostile environment" stretches much further back than 2012, when then home secretary Theresa May coined the term, and is rooted in the British Empire. We hear how successive governments — both Labour and Conservative — have created an inhumane system for migrants and refugees in the UK and how this has affected the people in her film. She also tells us how these dehumanising policies lead to the Windrush Scandal, and how they link with the NHS crisis, workers' rights, poverty, and the government's anti-protest laws. ---Get in touch--- Twitter: @FleetCivil Mastodon: @civilfleet@kolektiva.social info@civilfleet.com civilfleet.com Support: ko-fi.com/civilfleet ---Show Notes--- For more on Sonita Gale's documentary, see here: hostiledocumentary.com If you're in the UK, you can watch the film online here: tinyurl.com/569sfdd7 If you're outside the UK, then check here for more information on how to watch it: https://www.hostiledocumentary.com/watch-the-film/ See the trailer for Hostile here: tinyurl.com/34me88cv You can follow Hostile on Twitter here: @hostiledoc And follow Hostile on Instagram here: instagram.com/hostiledoc For anyone outside the UK that doesn't know what the Home Office is, it is similar to the Ministry of the Interior in much of Europe, or the Department for Homeland Security in the US. The head of the UK Home Office (called the Home Secretary) is Suella Braverman. Before her, it was Priti Patel. Both are mentioned in the podcast. Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, Theresa May and David Cameron were all former Conservative Prime Ministers. Members of the Conservative party are often referred to as Tories, and the party as The Tory Party. Theresa May was the Home Secretary in 2012. She coined the term Hostile Environment in 2012. You can read more about that, and the 10-year anniversary of it, here: tinyurl.com/4aynzkbz Ben and Sonita mention Enoch Powell and his Rivers of Blood speech. If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, there are opportunities to change things.”

Sonita Henry's filmography would make for one hell of a marathon on SyFy. Sonita played the President's Aide in The Fifth Element, present in that iconic final scene where Milla Jovovich's Leeloo and Bruce Willis' Korben get it on in the regeneration chamber. She was the doctor who delivers James T. Kirk in the heart-stopping opening minutes of 2009's Star Trek. She portrayed a colonel (who's transformed into a Dalek) in the 2013 Doctor Who Christmas special. And she was the archetype of every female villainess when she played Medea in the Vancouver-shot Olympus. Sonita's credit list also includes a wealth of nuanced performances in top-tier British television, including Luther, Father Brown, and Midsomer Murders, and a leading role as a brilliant investigator (and insecure new mum) in The Chelsea Detective. In the season-opener of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast – recorded during Sonita's recent visit to Vancouver – Sonita lays out her origin story, which includes driving across America with only a 45-minute driving test under her belt, navigating ethnic ambiguity and a sometimes unfriendly industry, the home she found in the science fiction realm, and why her upcoming role in Black Cake is a new career highlight (and not just because one of her bosses is Oprah Winfrey). Stick around until the end for a special appearance by none other than the Grand Empress of Sci-Fi. Episode sponsors: The Drama Class + Biz Books
My name is Sonita. I'm a 23 year old of Indian and Jamaican heritage. Music is one of my many goals. My main goal is to change my life. I am a singer/songwriter living in North London. I started singing at the age of 5 and would perform at school concerts up until I finished sixth form. I had no clue where to go from there. That's when my journey really began. Being inspired by musicals, specifically ‘In the Heights', I so badly wanted to find my voice in 2021 and began training with City Academy. Once that ended I auditioned to train with the West End Musical Theatre school and managed to secure myself half a scholarship. There are many artists that inspire me but the main ones are Jazmine Sullivan, Demi Lovato and Leona Lewis.

It starts with unauthorised migrants and doesn't end there.
Reeling from the shock of Marcelo Bielsa parting company with Leeds United and the continuing atrocities in Ukraine, Charles and Graham then discuss the latest attempt to jolt some life back into cinema audiences. Graham celebrates the new album, If Words Were Flowers by soul singer Curtis Harding and Charles reports on the powerful new documentary film exploring the experiences of migrant communities in the UK, Hostile, directed by Sonita Gale (not Monica, apologies, Sonita). Charles also reflects on the death of thunderous US musician Mark Lanegan - who rose to fame as frontman for Seattle grunge band Screaming Trees and went on to sing for Queens Of The Stone Age and collaborate with Isobel Campbell and Soulsavers, as well as branching out into writing books.
Felicity Beckett talks to director Sonita Gale about her new film, Hostile. Hostile is a feature-length documentary focusing on the UK's complicated relationship with its migrant communities. Told through the stories of four participants from Black and Asian backgrounds, the film focuses on the impact of the evolving ‘hostile environment' policies that target migrants. The film explores how the lives of international students, members of the Windrush generation, and ‘Highly-Skilled Migrants' have been affected. What does it mean to be British? What does it feel like to be told you don't belong? With Brexit, the Points Based Immigration System and the Borders and Nationality Bill taking effect, the film asks: once the ‘hostile environment' has targeted all migrants, who will it extend to next? This film seeks to hear these voices and inspire viewers to take action to create long-term change.
