Welcome to the inaugural episode of the Swapping Secrets Podcast! We are Athalia & Bryan. At the beginning of this year, we transitioned to a Non-Monogamous (NM) marriage. Exploring NM, not only helped us reevaluate what was best for us as a married couple, but also what was best for us as individuals. The transition to NM does not come without its challenges, but that's what inspired this podcast in the first place! SynopsisIn London on today's date in 1938, the Ballet Russe of Monte Carlo presented a brand-new work by the German composer Paul Hindemith based on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi entitled Nobilissima Visione. The idea may have been suggested by Hindemith's wife, who had recently converted to Catholicism. The Hindemiths had visited the Church of Santa Croce in Florence were deeply impressed by its frescoes depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis.  Hindemith originally intended to incorporate melodies by the 14th century French composer Machaut into his ballet but ended up writing original themes in an archaic style. As a staged ballet or as a concert suite,  Nobilissima Visione proved to be one of Hindemith's most popular works.“My ballet is not an eye-catcher in the old style,” wrote Hindemith in 1938, “It is not exactly full of sparkling wit, but all the same it makes a fine impression, with all the trappings of success that a composer greedy for recognition could wish. All these years she had known that God had given her, her husband Jehoiada the high priest of the temple. The palace had been in uproar when she had chosen to marry below her station. Had she killed Ahaziahs wife Zibiah?  Then like a lightning a name came into her mind. Baby Joash! Athalia had killed baby Joash! She gasped for breath and leaned onto the pillar of the temple. Her mind raced. What if the soldier's hadn't gotten there yet? What if there was a chance? She had to do something! Her heart trembled at the thought of facing Athaliah. She wiped the little wet droplets on her forehead. Why must she be afraid? She was no longer a young girl hidden in the shadows watching helplessly from her bedroom balcony as young girls were taken to be sacrificed to Baal. She was a woman now and she had her God. The God her mother had showed her. Her mother had been one of the concubines of her father but a God fearing woman. She had died from a sickness when Jehosheba was younger. How she missed her. The last time they had been together, her mother had prayed over her. In the winter of 1974 Athalia Ponsell Lindsley was in the midst of a bitter feud with her neighbor, Alan Stanford. The feud ended in brutal fashion on January 23rd when she was murdered in broad daylight on the front doorstep of her St. Augustine, Florida mansion with a machete. Suspects included both Stanford and her husband, James "Jinx" Lindsley. Elizabeth Randall, author of the book "Murder in St. Augustine: The Mysterious Death of Athalia Ponsell Lindsley" is my guest this week. Synopsis On today's date in 1733, Georg Friderich Handel paid a visit to Oxford to conduct the premiere performance of his new oratorio, “Athalia,” at the Sheldonian Theater. Handel had been invited by the University to add some musical pizzazz to an elaborate ceremony know as “The Publick Act,” during which honorary degrees were bestowed on worthy individuals. It was apparently a terrific performance, with one visitor from London reporting: “Never has there been such applause and marks of admiration.” But not everyone in Oxford was happy. One crusty don, apparently not a fan of new music, complained of the presence of “Handel and his lousy crew – a great number of foreign fiddlers.“ Handel was offered an honorary degree by Oxford, but he did not accept, claiming he was “too busy,” but maybe he just balked at paying the University's required fee of 100 pounds to receive the honor. In the 19th century, Oxford and its rival Cambridge would bestow honorary degrees on other major composers like Tchaikovsky and Dvorak, and, in our own time, between 1949 and 1990, one American composer, William Schuman received no fewer than 28 honorary degrees.
