The message emphasizes how intercessors birth God's promises through persistent prayer and protection. Using the story of Athaliah and Joash, it illustrates how the devil tries to kill God's promises, but through intercessors, these promises are birthed and preserved. Jehosheba exemplifies how intercessors birth God's promises by hiding Joash in God's house for six years. The teaching stresses that what isn't covered in prayer can be stolen, highlighting why intercessors must birth God's promises through strategic intercession. Like Moses' parents, when intercessors birth God's promises, the impact spans generations.1. Who was Athaliah and what did she do?2. Why did God's promise to David matter in this story?3. Why does the devil attack God's promises?4. Why can't promises from God be automatically fulfilled?5. Who was Jehosheba and what role did she play?6. Why was hiding Joash in the house of the Lord significant?7. Why is being a prayer warrior better than being just a "news broadcaster"?8. How does the story of Moses connect to this message?9. What happens to things that are hidden in prayer?10. How does prayer coverage affect future generations?11. Why is consistent prayer protection necessary?12. And he made a covenant with them and put them under oath in the house of the Lord, and he showed them the king's son. 5 And he commanded them, “This is the thing that you shall do: one third of you, those who come off duty on the Sabbath and guard the king's house 6 (another third being at the gate Sur and a third at the gate behind the guards) shall guard the palace.[c] 7 And the two divisions of you, which come on duty in force on the Sabbath and guard the house of the Lord on behalf of the king, 8 shall surround the king, each with his weapons in his hand. And whoever approaches the ranks is to be put to death. Be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.”9 The captains did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded, and they each brought his men who were to go off duty on the Sabbath, with those who were to come on duty on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10 And the priest gave to the captains the spears and shields that had been King David's, which were in the house of the Lord. 11 And the guards stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the south side of the house to the north side of the house, around the altar and the house on behalf of the king. 12 Then he brought out the king's son and put the crown on him and gave him the testimony. And they proclaimed him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, “Long live the king!”13 When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she went into the house of the Lord to the people. 14 And when she looked, there was the king standing by the pillar, according to the custom, and the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets. And Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, “Treason! Treason!” 15 Then Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains who were set over the army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to death with the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest said, “Let her not be put to death in the house of the Lord.” 16 So they laid hands on her; and she went through the horses' entrance to the king's house, and there she was put to death.17 And Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people, that they should be the Lord's people, and also between the king and the people. 18 Then all the people of the land went to the house of Baal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest posted watchmen over the house of the Lord. 19 And he took the captains, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord, marching through the gate of the guards to the king's house. And he took his seat on the throne of the kings. 20 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been put to death with the sword at the king's house.Jehoash Reigns in Judah21 [d] Jehoash[e] was seven years old when he began to reign.Footnotesa. 2 Kings 11:2 Compare 2 Chronicles 22:11; Hebrew lacks and she putb. 2 Kings 11:2 Septuagint, Syriac, Vulgate (compare 2 Chronicles 22:11) shec. 2 Kings 11:6 The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertaind. 2 Kings 11:21 Ch 12:1 in Hebrewe. 2 Kings 11:21 Jehoash is an alternate spelling of Joash (son of Ahaziah) as in verse 2#2Kings |#BibleStudy |#DanielBatarseh |#mbchicago |#mbcchicago |#Bible |#livechurch |#churchlive |#chicagochurch |#chicagochurches |#versebyverse |#church |#chicago |#sermon |#bibleexplained |#bibleproject |#bibleverse

In this episode of Arise + Abide, Sally and Curtis dive into 2 Kings 11, which recounts the story of Athaliah's reign and the rise of King Joash. They discuss the dramatic events surrounding Athaliah's attempt to destroy the royal family of Judah after the death of her son, King Ahaziah. The episode highlights Jehosheba's courageous act of saving the infant Joash, hiding him in the Temple of the Lord for six years until he is revealed and crowned king. The hosts reflect on themes of faith, God's faithfulness, and the importance of following God's laws as Joash's rise symbolizes the triumph of God's promises over the schemes of power-hungry rulers. Curtis and Sally explore the contrast between the worldly pursuit of power and the kingdom of God, emphasizing the significance of daily engagement with God's Word. This episode encourages listeners to reflect on their own lives, idols they may be holding onto, and the peace that comes from truly submitting to God's rule.

Red Hills Church - Messages

Pastor Marshall Ochs | October 27, 2024In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from 2 Kings 11-12. These chapters cover the biblical narrative of Athaliah's corruption and the preservation of the Davidic line through Jehosheba, emphasizing God's faithfulness in turmoil. Despite Athaliah's efforts to eradicate the seed of David, God works through ordinary individuals to fulfill His promises. The narrative warns against superficial reforms without true heart devotion to God, illustrating how Israel's reliance on outward change rather than covenant faithfulness leads to cycles of sin and chaos.

Daily Dose of Hope October 22, 2024 Day 3 of Week 30 Scripture: 2 Chronicles 22-23; 2 Kings 11; Psalm 131; Matthew 8 Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast the goes along with the Bible reading plan at New Hope.  Our first Old Testament passage is 2 Chronicles 22-23.  We read a similar text in 2 Kings 11.  King Azahiah is evil and follows the ways of Ahab.  He only reigned one year.  His mother was a real piece of work too.  Lots of drama in these stories. After King Ahaziah is killed, his mother, Athaliah (Ahab and Jezebel's daughter), finds her way to the throne. She has all the royals killed, including her own grandchildren, to ensure that only she could rule Judah. The woman was pure evil. But remember God's promise–a descendent of David will sit on the throne of Judah forever. What Athaliah failed to realize was that one of her grandsons, Joash, still just a baby, was hidden away by his nurse. At just the right time, the priest Jehoiada plans a counter revolution, in which Athaliah is overthrown and Joash, all of age seven, becomes king. The priest presents the youngster with a copy of the covenant and King Joash is unanimously supported. The priest Jehoiada makes a covenant between the Lord and the king and his people. There was also a covenant between the king and the people themselves. Obviously, the king was al of seven years old so Jehoiada does this on the king's behalf. But the renewal of the covenant was essential because after the previous wayward kings, the people had totally forgotten who they were. Covenant renewal restores their identity, although it will be a long road to relearn what it means to be the people of God. This covenant renewal also reminds the people of God's promise to David. For the six years of Athaliah's rule, it appeared on the surface that this promise had been disrupted. But by ensuring Joash's safety, the line of David had stayed intact. The promise is, after all, unbreakable. Matthew 8 is our New Testament text.  In this chapter, Matthew offers us a glimpse into the variety of miracles that Jesus performed including physical healings, spiritual healings, and even miracles of nature (calming the storm.) In between those miracles, we find this brief interaction between Jesus and someone described as a teacher of the law a nd a would-be disciple. I would guess that by this time in Jesus' ministry, there were all kinds of people hanging around him. There were those who were bedazzled by his teaching and miracles, there were those who were curious and seeking, and there were those who truly believed. In a world before technology, I'm sure that Jesus was often the main show in town! All kinds of people crowded around him for many different reasons. Of course, Jesus knew this; he knew their levels of attachment to him varied. Thus, when a teacher of the law approaches him and says he will follow Jesus wherever he goes, Jesus gives a warning of sorts. Jesus has no ties to the things of this world. He does not even have a regular home, no place to lay his head at night. Those who follow him must be willing to give up ties to worldly things as well. Jesus must have known this man wasn't ready to do so. Then, another would-be disciple implies that he wants to follow Jesus but he must first go bury his father. We don't know if this means the man needed to literally bury his dead father, take care of a father who was old, or even simply take care of family affairs. But Jesus' reaction is clear–discipleship is not something that Jesus wants someone to put off. The demands of the Kingdom are now, they are immediate. Devotion to Jesus requires sacrifice. Nothing should stand in the way of discipleship. Jesus doesn't want to be an extra-curricular activity. In fact, he won't tolerate that. He wants to be the true Lord of our life. Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Jehoshaphat - The Weakness of Compromise

Scripture Reading: 2 Chronicles 16:13 - 17:6 Jehoshaphat was the 4th king in the kingdom of Judah.  The summary description of his life is given as follows:  "The LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David.  He did not seek the Baals, but sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, and not according to the practices of Israel . . . His heart was courageous in the ways of the LORD" (2 Chr 17:3,4,6). Although he was one of the better kings of Judah and served God, for the most part, there are incidents in his life in which he was guilty of serious compromise … serious enough that two different prophets confronted him about his actions, declaring to him both God's displeasure and judgment.  Jehoshaphat attempted to bring spiritual vitality to the people of Judah by dispatching teachers of the Mosaic law and judges to bring justice (2 Chr 17:7-9; 19:5-11).  Under Jehoshaphat's rule the people of Judah experienced prosperity and peace (2 Chr 17:10-19). Jehoshaphat's weakness was his willingness to align himself with two wicked kings of the northern kingdom of Israel … Ahab and his son Azariah.  He did this through the marriage of his son, Jehoram, to Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab (2 Chr 18:1; 21:1,6), military alliance (2 Chr 18:3), and a cooperative ship-building venture (2 Chr 20:35-37).  Because of this compromise, God's judgment fell on Jehoshaphat     (2 Chr 19:2; 20:37). The life of Jehoshaphat is a clarion call to us for wholehearted allegiance to God … beckoning us to resist compromise regarding things we ought not compromise.

However, the narrative at that time switches to the line of the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat is not mentioned again until 1 Kings 22. The summary of his life is found there saying –   “Jehoshaphat the son of Asa had become king over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel. 42 Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 43 And he walked in all the ways of his father Asa. He did not turn aside from them, doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord. Nevertheless the high places were not taken away, for the people offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.” 1 Kings 22:41-43   The name Jehoshaphat means Yah has Judged or Yah Judges. He was a good king of Judah. Matthew next records, “and Jehoshaphat begot Joram.”   This king is called both Jehoram (2 Kings 8:16) and Joram (2 Kings 8:23). Of him, it says –   “He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. 18 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife; and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.” 2 Kings 8:17, 18   As such his record defines him as a bad king. His name means Yah is High or Yah is Exalted. With him out of the way, Matthew next skips three generations of kings: Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah. He also omits the reign of Athaliah, the wicked queen who usurped the throne upon the death of Ahaziah, her son. Athaliah was the daughter of Omri, King of Israel. He was a bad king.   Joash (aka Jehoash) was a good king during the time of his instruction under Jehoiada the priest. Eventually he was killed and Amaziah, his son, reigned. Amaziah was an ok king, “yet not like his father David” (2 Kings 14:3). Eventually, a conspiracy was formed against him and he was killed. That is when his son Azaiah (aka Uzziah) replaced him. This is where Matthew's genealogy continues. As it says, “and Joram begot Uzziah.”   He is first noted in 2 Kings 14:21. Azariah means Yah Has Helped. Uzziah means something like Strength of Yah or Yah is My Strength. Azariah (Uzziah) was considered a good king over Israel, but he became prideful, attempted to offer incense to the Lord in the temple (a duty that belongs to the priest alone), and he was struck with leprosy till the day he died. He lived in an isolated house apart from the people and he was cut off from the house of the Lord.   Life application: There are various suggestions as to why Matthew skips generations in his genealogy. One is that the three generations were omitted to keep the record of generations totaling fourteen to maintain the pattern set forth in Matthew 1:17. This is obvious, but it does not explain why he chose that pattern or why he chose these three to be omitted.   There is the suggestion that the three omitted kings were descended from Jezebel and that this is then explained by the words of the second commandment –   “For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” Exodus 20:5, 6   That is reasonable, but it may not be the case as well. The word “begot” does not necessarily mean from one generation to the next. Jesus was begotten of all of the people named in His genealogy, being a product of each of them. Therefore, it is not necessary to include all the names.   Despite the difficulties in this genealogy, especially when compared to that of Luke's found in Luke 3, there is no known ancient dispute against them by detractors of the Christian faith. They were considered reasonable and reliable from the very beginning. And more, there are possible explanations for all of the complexities found in them. Referring to the innumerable written commentaries available on them will provide reassurances that these records are acceptable as valid representations of the genealogy of Jesus Christ.   Lord God, Your word is big, it is often complicated, and it has mysteries that take careful consideration. And yet, for those who are willing to put in the effort of searching, comparing, and contemplating what is recorded in it, there are always answers that can be found to even the most difficult issues. Thank You for Your word which challenges us to seek You out more and more, no matter how much we already know. Amen.

Friday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary TimeJune 21, 2024 – Memorial of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, Religious  Hello and welcome to the Word, bringing you the Good News of Jesus Christ every day from the Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province. I am Fr. Karl Esker from the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, NY. Today is Friday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time.Today's reading is taken from the holy Gospel according to Matthew: Jesus said to his disciples: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. "The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be." The gospel of the Lord. In our gospel today, Jesus tells his disciples: “where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” We often think of a treasure as something material, like a pot of gold or a bank account, a shiny new car or a dream house. But it could just as well be a relationship, like a very dear friend or a significant other, or something less material, like ambition to power or status within a group. And it may happen that our lives seem so scattered all over the place, or so taken up with just getting my, that we lose sight of our treasure. Jesus warns that if we do not look for and choose our treasure well, we could end up losing it and everything else. That is what we see in the first reading. There we hear the story of Athaliah, the mother of the king, who could not bear the thought of losing her position and influence when the king died. Her ambition led her to try to kill the whole king's family and become herself the queen. She almost succeeded, but one of her grandchildren escaped, and when that child grew up, those officials who had remained faithful to God's covenant proclaimed him king to the joy of the people; and Athaliah lost not only her position, but her life as well. It's a story worthy of the Game of Thrones, but here the main point is not the intrigue, but God's faithfulness to God's people. The question of the treasure is not so much what we do with it, but what we become with it. What is the value system we take on to attain our treasure? As Jesus in another part of the gospels asks: “What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit one's life?” By life he means the full realization of our humanity in right relationship with God and with others. So, to choose the wrong treasure is to direct our lives toward something that will not help us grow as human beings and children of God. This is where Jesus' parable about our interior light comes in. We need to cultivate a sound conscience, otherwise it will be overgrown by the tangle of our desires and we will end up in darkness. We need a good eye to see our true selves and the true treasure that may lie hidden in our heart, overshadowed by the busyness of our lives. One way would be to examine where we spend our time. Outside of work or study, how much time to I spend paging through social media? How important is it to score or give “likes?” Do I go crawling through some dark places of the Internet? Does my use of the Internet help me grow as a person, or does it just feed my curiosity and my fears. Am I becoming a slave to it? And what about the other areas of my life? To cultivate a sound conscience and discover my true self, I need to spend time with Jesus in prayer and reflecting on the gospels; I need to invest myself in my relationships with my family, my work, and my church or neighborhood. This will help me to grow as a human being. Then I will know the value of the other things in my life, because my true treasure is God's gift of myself and the ability to relate myself in love to God and to the others God places in my life. Only then can I truly be me. May God bless you.Fr. Karl E. EskerBasilica of our Lady of Perpetual HelpBrooklyn, NY

That king prospered as he followed the Lord, but when he later turned away from God, God raised up another righteous man to courageously confront the king and the people, calling them to return to God. God continues to work through his people today, when his people trust in him and courageously step out to do the good to which he calls us. Text: 2 Kings 11, 2 Chronicles 24
