Where Your Treasure Is: The Heart of the Matter “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.“ Matthew 6:19-21 NASB95 This is not merely about financial giving. It is about what a person values most — where their mind, emotions, and will (collectively, the “heart”) are oriented. Treasure may include: Money Time God-given talents and skills Spiritual gifts Any “storehouse of value” entrusted by heaven Money is simply a representation of value — a “certificate of appreciation” or “certificate of completion” that says, “Someone did something I value.” That means the way people hold and use money reveals what they actually honor, trust, and love. Messiah's interaction about the Roman tax illustrates this (Matthew 22:15–22). When asked if taxes should be paid to Caesar, He requests a coin and asks whose image it bears. When they answer, “Caesar's,” He replies: “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's.” Matthew 22:21 NASB95 Coins bear Caesar's image. Human beings bear God's image. The study suggests the real issue is not “Do we give money?” but “Do we give ourselves?” This ties identity (tzelem Elohim, God's image) to stewardship. The call is not just to manage finances well, but to align the whole self with the kingdom. Exodus 30: The Half-Sheqel Ransom and Atonement The first main text is Exodus 30:11–16, part of the Torah portion Ki Tisa (“when you lift up” or “when you take up”). Adonai commands Moshe to take a census of Israel, but it is done in a surprising way: Each man 20 years and older gives half a shekel It is called “a ransom for himself to the LORD” (Exodus 30:12) The rich may not give more, the poor may not give less (Exodus 30:15) The money funds the service of the Tent of Meeting and becomes “a memorial” (Exodus 30:16) The Hebrew expression מַחֲצִית הַשֶּׁקֶל makhatzit ha-sheqel (half the sheqel) is crucial. It is described as: A כֹּפֶר kofer (ransom) for each life A means of atonement. A safeguard “so that there will be no plague among them when you number them” (Exodus 30:12 NASB95). This census is not about demographic data but about redemption identity. The people of Israel have just been brought out of מִצְרַיִם Mitzrayim (Egypt, “the house of slavery/bondage,” Exodus 13:3, 14; 20:2; Deuteronomy 5:6; 6:12; 7:8; 8:14; 13:5, 10; Judges 6:8; Micah 6:4; Joshua 24:17; Jeremiah 34:13). They did not merely “leave” Egypt; Heaven ransomed them out of it. This frames salvation not as a casual rescue but as a price paid. A ransom implies: Something (or someone) has been taken A cost is demanded for release The redeemer absorbs that cost So each half-sheqel becomes a tangible reminder: You belong to the One who bought you out of slavery (1Corinthians 6:20; 7:23). At the same time, Scripture warns us about reducing people to money. Counting coins instead of persons is meant to protect against treating people as mere financial units. Later history shows what happens when societies start thinking that way — people become commodities, even less valued than money itself. Numbers 1: From Ransomed People to a Fighting Force The next major step is the census in Numbers 1:1–3. They treat the mission as too costly, despite having been ransomed by great miracles. This parallels the life of a believer in Messiah: redeemed out of spiritual bondage, yet called into costly obedience, spiritual warfare, and faithful endurance — not mere spiritual tourism. Priestly Calling: Hearing, Doing, and Walking Two passages illustrate the ordination of Israel’s priests: Exodus 29:4–9 – Aharon and his sons receive garments, anointing, and a perpetual priesthood. Leviticus 8:23–24 – Blood is placed on: The lobe of the right ear The right thumb The big toe of the right foot Ancient Jewish commentators see in this a pattern: Ear – for hearing Thumb/hand – for doing Toe/foot – for walking These align with three key Hebrew concepts: שָׁמַע shama‘ (“to hear, listen, obey”) עָשָׂה asah (“to do, to perform”) הָלַךְ halakh (“to walk, to go”), from which הֲלָכָה halakhah (“way of walking/practice,” i.e., tradition) comes. Priests are thus marked to: Hear God's word Do what He commands Walk in ways that reflect His character When Messiah later critiques certain leaders (Matthew 23), saying they “say things and do not do them,” He is confronting a breakdown in this priestly pattern. Their halakhah (practical walk) contradicts the Torah and the heart of God, even if their words sound religiously correct. This priestly pattern extends to all who serve in the name of Yeshua. One cannot merely teach Torah, or speak of Messiah, while living a life that contradicts both. Hearing, doing, and walking must remain aligned. Holy Oil, Holy Incense, Holy Lives: Guarding What Belongs to God Alone Back in Exodus 30, here are the key characteristics of the anointing oil and incense used in the מִשְׁכָּן Mishkan (“dwelling place,” the Tabernacle): These mixtures are “most holy” (קֹדֶשׁ קָדָשִׁים qodesh qadashim, “holy of holies,” the same Hebrew term for the Most Holy Place of the Mishkan). They must not be copied for personal or commercial use They must not be applied to common people for their own pleasure. The concern is that what uniquely signifies the presence and authority of God could be trivialized, commodified or associated with corrupt behavior. Later archaeology finds household figurines and inscriptions combining the divine Name with “His Asherah,” suggesting syncretism (mixing of disparate belief systems) and distortion. When Israel took the symbols of the Mishkan and mixed them with pagan patterns, contemporary and later observers (namely, Bible-critical archaeologists) could conclude Israel was no different from the surrounding nations. This is an assemblage of pottery shards from a 8th century B.C. (900s) jar (titled Pithos A) found at the Kuntillet Ajrud site in the northeastern Sinai peninsula. The inscriptions show five figures, including a bull and a calf. A seated musician or weaver is to the right side of this reconstruction. The phrase above the figures includes the phrase “Yahweh of Samaria and his Asherah.” (Choi, Gwanghyun. “The Samarian Syncretic Yahwism and the Religious Center of Kuntillet Ajrud.” 2016) This warns against: Treating divine symbols, language, or worship styles as branding tools. Borrowing holy imagery to sell, entertain, or self-promote. Confusing people about who the God of Israel truly is. Holy things must remain holy, not because God is petty, but because misuse misrepresents Him. 2 Kings 12: The Priests Who Wouldn't Repair God’s House A parallel passage to Exodus 30:11–16 is 2Kings 12:1–16. It’s from a very messy political period in Israel's history: a divided kingdom north and south, coups, moral corruption led by idolatry. One of the few “good” kings, יוֹאָשׁ Yo'ash ( Jehoash/Joash) of Yehudah (Judah, southern kingdom), commands that: All money brought to the house of the LORD Census money Freewill offerings prompted by the heart Be used by the priests to repair the damages of the Temple On paper, this is ideal: those entrusted with God's house use God's people's gifts to maintain that house. But decades pass. By the 23rd year of Joash's reign, “the priests had not repaired the damages of the house” (2Kings 12:6). The king confronts יְהוֹיָדָע Yehoyada‘ (Jehoiada) the priest and the others: Why haven't you repaired it? The text implies: Money flowed in. Repairs did not happen. The priests eventually agree, likely under Yoash’s coercion, to stop receiving repair money and stop pretending they will do the work. This is a sobering mirror: People may have correct theology and even be called by God. Yet their inaction and misplaced priorities betray their hearts. They grow comfortable receiving, but not serving. Note the contrast between the priests and the contractors Yoash later hired to do the repairs. Yoash had secure chest is installed — sealed with a hole is bored at the top — and multiple overseers count and distribute funds transparently. The text explicitly notes there was no suspicion of embezzlement, because the contractors acted faithfully. This lines up with the larger biblical pattern: Stewardship is not only spiritual. It is accountability with practical outcomes. The presence of a “Temple” in one's life — congregational involvement, correct doctrine, our identity in the Messiah — does not cancel out the heart's hidden “high places”: areas of compromise, competing loyalties, or unchallenged cultural idols. Ezra 8 and 2 Corinthians 8–9: Accountability and Cheerful Giving In 2Corinthians 8–9, apostle Shaul (Paul) handles a large gift for the believers in need. Some have seen hints in the text suggesting some feared Paul might mishandle funds.1“Paul handles a possible misinterpretation of the collection. Paul has already been accused of embezzlement (cf. 2Cor 12:16ff.), a charge that he addresses in a preliminary way in 2Cor 2:17. In order to prevent any criticism about his handling of this gift, Paul avoids making the delivery himself. Instead, he has commissioned representatives of the participating churches to deliver the collection. The analogy to Ezra's procedure is obvious (Ezra 8:24–30).” (Scott, James M. 2 Corinthians. Psalm 112:9 NASB95 The same God who “supplies seed to the sower and bread for food” (2Corinthians 9:10) is able to multiply the seed and increase the harvest of righteousness. The issue is not fundraising technique; it is aligning generosity with God's character. Some see parallels to Ezra 8:24–30,2Scott, paragraph 42958 where Ezra receives significant contributions from the Persian emperor and the people of Israel for rebuilding the Temple and Jerusalem. Ezra: Chose 12 leading priests. Weighed the silver, gold, and utensils into their hands. Held them accountable to deliver everything safely to Jerusalem. Two people verify what is given and what is received. The aim is to avoid even the appearance of financial misconduct (1Thessalonians 5:22). The Widow's Two Coins: Heart Over Surplus The study then turns to the Gospels' scene of the poor widow (Mark 12:41–44; Luke 21:1–4). Yeshua sits opposite the treasury and watches: Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow drops in two small copper coins. Messiah declares: “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on.” Mark 12:43–44 NASB95 From heaven's perspective: Amount is not the primary measure. Cost to the giver and heart motivation are. The widow surrenders her whole life, not just a portion of disposable income. This echoes the intensive devotion the altar of incense symbolizes in Exodus 30 — prayers rising as a representation of the people themselves, deemed “most holy” in God's sight. This challenges both religious pride and fear-based withholding. It calls for whole-hearted trust (i.e., faith) in the God who sees and values the hidden sacrifice. God selects and appoints them for service. God entrusts them with resources — time, money, ability, knowledge. God watches how they steward it. God measures the heart by where that treasure actually goes. For the priests who failed to repair the Temple, their neglected tasks revealed that their treasure — and thus their hearts — lay elsewhere. For the widow who gave her last coins, her action revealed a heart fully entrusted to God. If someone followed the trail of how a believer uses money, time, energy, and gifting, would it lead to the kingdom of heaven — or somewhere else? To be “all in” for the kingdom is to let Adonai direct every “certificate of value” He has placed in one's hands, whether coins, skills, or hours in the day. A braita clarifies that while the tefillin shel rosh contain four separate scrolls in four compartments, the arm tefillin (shel yad) consist of all four paragraphs written on a single scroll. If one wrote the tefillin shel rosh on one scroll, it is valid, as long as it is put into four separate compartments. If one wrote the tefillin shel yad on four separate scrolls and placed them in one compartment, it is valid, though Rabbi Yehuda requires them to be glued together to appear as one. Rabbi Yosi rules that a tefillin shel rosh can be used on the arm if it is covering by one piece of leather. A contradiction is raised against Rabbi Yosi as Rabbi Yochanan ruled that this is not possible as one cannot lower an item in sanctity, i.e. from the head to the arm. The order of the paragraphs to be placed in the four compartments of the tefillin shel rosh is established as: kadesh and v'haya ki yeviacha on the right, followed by shema and v'haya im shamoa on the left. To resolve a contradiction with another source that reverses this, Abaye clarifies that each source refers to a different perspective of "right" and "left," depending on whether one is looking from the perspective of the reader or the wearer. Rashi and Rabbeinu Tam (among others) disagree about how to understand the specific order of the tefillin described in the Gemara. Rav concludes that if a scribe switches the order of the paragraphs, the tefillin are invalid.

Joash is a lesser known king with an important lesson for us today. Under the mentorship of the priest Jehoiada, Joash accomplished great things. But after Jehoiada’s death, Joash was quickly led astray. Joash's life serves as a warning about the limits of spiritual mentorship. While mentorship is good, it cannot replace one's own personal relationship with God. 2 Chronicles 22:10-12 – When the wicked Queen Athaliah (daughter of Jezebel) massacred children of the royal household, God worked through Princess Jehosheba to save the life of a baby boy named Joash. 2 Chronicles 23:1-15 – Joash was hidden in the Temple for 6 years. Under the leadership of Priest Jehoiada, Athaliah was overthrown and Joash became king. Deuteronomy 17:18-20 – Jehoiada gave Joash the Law of God. God instructed kings to make a copy of the Law, stay humble, and diligently study. 2 Chronicles 23:16-24:14 – Under Jehoiada's mentorship, Joash repaired the Temple, removed idols, and did building projects. 2 Chronicles 24:15-26 – After Jehoiada died, Joash was led astray and brought back idolatry. When God sent the prophet Zechariah to warn Joash, Joash killed him in the Temple. God removed his hand of protection over Judah, allowing invaders to pillage the land. Joash failed to study God's Law for himself, relying instead on a mentor. Joash's heart for God was motivated by a desire to please another man. He went through the motions of godliness when his mentor was watching. 1 Timothy 4:6-16 – Paul mentored Timothy. Mentorship is good, but cannot replace a personal relationship with God. Do you go to church out of love for God, or are you going to make somebody else happy? Do you study the Bible, or take your pastor's word for it? Joash Repairs the Temple 24 Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother’s name was Zibiah; she was from Beersheba. 2 Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the years of Jehoiada the priest. 3 Jehoiada chose two wives for him, and he had sons and daughters. 4 Some time later Joash decided to restore the temple of the Lord. 5 He called together the priests and Levites and said to them, “Go to the towns of Judah and collect the money due annually from all Israel, to repair the temple of your God. Because of their guilt, God’s anger came on Judah and Jerusalem. 19 Although the Lord sent prophets to the people to bring them back to him, and though they testified against them, they would not listen. 20 Then the Spirit of God came on Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands? You will not prosper. Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.’” 21 But they plotted against him, and by order of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple. 22 King Joash did not remember the kindness Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had shown him but killed his son, who said as he lay dying, “May the Lord see this and call you to account.” 23 At the turn of the year,[a] the army of Aram marched against Joash; it invaded Judah and Jerusalem and killed all the leaders of the people. They sent all the plunder to their king in Damascus. 24 Although the Aramean army had come with only a few men, the Lord delivered into their hands a much larger army. Because Judah had forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors, judgment was executed on Joash. 25 When the Arameans withdrew, they left Joash severely wounded. His officials conspired against him for murdering the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him in his bed. Our story picks up with Joash (the hidden royal) being brought forth at the age of seven and hailed as the king of Judah followed by the death of Athaliah. Peace reigns in Judah as we see over 100 years of four fairly "good" kings reigning in Judah from 835-731 B.C. These kings started well but didn't always finish well: Joash, Amaziah, Uzziah and Jotham. King Joash ⁃ Takes the kingship at age 7 ⁃ Jehoiada, the High Priest, is Joash's mentor, advisor and instructor ⁃ Spiritual reformation was taking place across Judah as Joash starts out so well with Jehoiada as his advisor - until Jehoiada's death ⁃ Joash then gets new advisors (2 Chronicles 24:17-18) and they led him astray, worshiping idols and God's anger came. ⁃ Zechariah is the High Priest after Jehoiada. Zechariah was Jehoiada's son. He tells Joash and his new advisors of their sin against God, so they plot to kill him. 2 Chronicles 24:20. Zechariah is stoned to death. ⁃ Hazael is victorious in bottles over Judah ⁃ Then Joash's assignation follows Amaziah ⁃ Amaziah is Joash's son - Amaziah starts well but doesn't finish well, following the pattern of his father. ⁃ Mercenaries come from Israel ⁃ Amaziah is given victory as he acts on the words of God through a prophet. 2 Chronicles 25:9 ⁃ But then Amaziah brings idols back from that victory. 2 Chronicles 25:15. Again a prophet comes to Amaziah to warn him, but this time Amaziah doesn't listen. ⁃ He is then defeated by Jehoash, king of Israel and he too is assassinated. King Uzziah (also known as Azariah) ⁃ Uzziah is Amaziah's son. 2 Chronicles 26:4-5 tells that he had godly counsel and as long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success. ⁃ He was an extremely capable king ⁃ Ruled for 52 years ⁃ In Israel, Jeroboam II was ruling. Uzziah and Jeroboam II expanded both nations to the original size of the kingdom at the time of David and Solomon. ⁃ New prophets arise during the reign of Jeroboam II and Uzziah: Jonah, Amos, Hosea and Isaiah ⁃ Their kingdoms experienced the glory days of David and Solomon ⁃ But then Uzziah does not finish well. His pride went to his head and he usurped the role of the priests in burning the incense and immediately gets leprosy. 2 Chronicles 26:16-17 King Jotham ⁃ Uziah's son, Jotham becomes king of Judah. 2 Chronicles 27:2. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but the people, however, continued their corrupt practices. ⁃ Battle with the Ammonites - Godly king who is victorious over the Ammonites. 2 Chronicles 27:6 ⁃ Prosperity & Spiritual decline begins. Pastor beings today's class with a Flashback to twelve years earlier from where we left off last week in order to take a look at the prophet Elisha. Elisha's name means "God is my Salvation." Even in this dark time of history, God uses Elisha to draw people back to Himself. Elisha's Ministry ⁃ Moab revolts (2 Kings 3) against Israel. ⁃ Widow's olive oil (2 Kings 4) God shows His love for individuals ⁃ Naaman healed (2 Kings 5) "The God of Israel is the God of the world!" ⁃ Blinded Arabians (2 Kings 6) "Don't be afraid," the prophet Elisha answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." And Elisha prayed, "Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see." Then the Lord opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha." 2 Kings 6:16-17. ⁃ Samaria besieged (2 Kings 7) Now that we know the activity of Elisha during these 12 years of turmoil leading up to the deaths of both the king of Israel and the king of Judah, we return to where we left off with our story last week. King Jehu of Israel ⁃ Kills Kings Joram (king of Israel) and Ahaziah (king of Judah) (2 Kings 9) ⁃ Has Queen Jezebel killed (2 Kings 9) ⁃ Has Ahab's extended family killed (2 Kings 10) ⁃ Has King Ahaziah's relatives killed (2 Kings 10) ⁃ Has Baal worship destroyed (2 Kings 10) "So Jehu destroyed Baal worship in Israel. Yet Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit." 1 Kings 10: 28,31. Such a powerful reminder to have a heart for the things of God, to not take lightly what God desires and has done. Jehu took political control but her did not take spiritual control. Meanwhile in Judah… "When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son had been killed by Jehu king of Israel, she took over the throne of Judah and proceeded to destroy the whole royal family of the house of Judah." 2 Chronicles 22:10. Joash was a young prince who was thrust into the kingship of Judah with the spiritual help of Jehoiada the priest. But when Jehoiada died, Joash's faith proved to be borrowed, not his own and he ran into sin. Our students should be warned from this royal failure in the OT!

THE TEMPLE in Jerusalem fell into disrepair within a century of the death of Solomon. The king who repaired it was a good man—sort of. Joash (or Jehoash), son of Ahaziah, reigned in Judah 835–796 BC. He was made king at age seven by the high priest Jehoiada and is credited with restoring the Temple—even pushing the priests, who seemed rather slow to make repairs even after they were ordered to do so. However, the account in 2 Chronicles 24 records that after the death of Jehoiada, Joash fell away and returned to the pagan gods of the Canaanites. Worse, he had the son of Jehoiada, Zechariah, murdered for calling him out! As a consequence, God allowed Judah to be defeated by a relatively small army from the neighboring Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and Joash was assassinated in his bed by two of his servants. We also discuss the death of Elisha in the northern kingdom of Israel, and why King Joash (same name, different king) failed to completely defeat the Arameans. THE END of Ahab's line came within a span of seven years. Jehu, an Israelite military commander under Ahab's son, King Jehoram (or Joram), was anointed king over the northern kingdom at the direction of the prophet Elisha. Jehu moved quickly to eliminate Jehoram and the rest of the sons of Ahab. We explain why Ahab didn't literally have 70 sons (the number 70 in the ancient Near East was not a quantity; it was a symbol that represented “all of them”). Jehoram's nephew, King Ahaziah of Judah, was also killed by Jehu as he fled in his chariot, finally dying at the city of Megiddo. Then Jehu went to Jezreel and found Jezebel, the queen mother, whose last act in this world was probably screaming after she was tossed out of a tower window by her eunuchs. That left only Athaliah, mother of King Ahaziah. Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, the sister of King Jehoram of Israel. When she heard that Ahaziah was dead, she tried to kill all of her grandsons. Why? She—and really, it was the Fallen realm motivating her—tried to eliminate the line of David (her husband, King Jehoram of Judah, son of Jehoshaphat, was a descendant of David) and replace it with the line of Ahab. Unfortunately for Athaliah, she missed one—an infant boy named Joash. Jehoiada the priest had secretly saved and raised Joash in the Temple. At the age of seven, Jehoiada brought him out, proclaimed him king, and, at his command, had Athaliah put to death, thus putting an end to the house of Ahab. In our last episode, we considered the life of King Joash, the baby heir to the throne who was rescued and brought to kingship by Jehoiada the priest. Joash abandoned the Lord's temple, and was later assassinated. The next four kings continue this lineage. Amaziah begins well, but surprisingly turns to worship the idols of those he has defeated, and soon thereafter becomes overconfident. Amaziah's son, Uzziah, also begins well, but he, too, becomes overconfident, and acts unfaithfully by offering incense in the Lord's temple, a role that is reserved only for priests. Next, Jotham's reign is pretty quiet, as he did not waver in obeying the Lord. In our last episode, we considered the life of King Joash, the baby heir to the throne who was rescued from a maniacal monarch, raised in the temple, and brought to kingship by Jehoiada the priest. Joash began by rebuilding the Lord's temple, then he abandons both the Lord's temple and the Lord. The Lord therefore abandons him and he is later assassinated. Amaziah begins well, but surprisingly turns to worship the idols of those he has defeated, and soon thereafter becomes overconfident, challenging Israel to war. In our reading from 2 Kings we'll encounter a few Israelite kings who ruled Israel during Amaziah's reign, including Jehoash who plunders Jerusalem after being provoked by Amaziah.2 Chronicles 25 - 1:07 . 2 Kings 14 - 8:35 . In our last episode, the military commander, Jehu, was anointed as king. He and his men set out immediately to put an end to the house of Ahab, and in the process, he also killed the king of Judah, the evil king Ahaziah. Today, Jehu continues his conquest with a number of cunning strategies, killing Ahab's wife Jezebel, overthrowing the house of Ahab, destroying the prophets of a Baal, and avenging the blood of Naboth the Gileadite on behalf of the Lord. Remember that the Lord predicted Ahab's fall through Elijah, who has since been taken up into glory. Today, we'll hear the account of King Joash, the infant heir to the throne who was rescued from a royal slaughter and raised in the temple of God. With guidance from Jehoiada the priest, Joash is inaugurated as a child king over Judah, and he begins the work of repairing the temple. Hazael has become the king of Aram just as Elisha had prophesied, and the army of Jehoahaz, king of Israel is almost completely wiped out. Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and queen mother in Judah, attempts to capitalize on the death of her son by killing the rest of the royal family. Her demonic attack is foiled by the LORD, who works through a faithful priest and his wife to rescue one of the sons in the line of David. The priest Jehoiada waits until the rightful heir to the throne is seven years old before he unfolds his plan to anoint Joash king of Judah. Athaliah is brought to a just end when she is executed for her treason, and the enthronement of Joash is met with joy and a rejection of the worship of Baal. Rev. THE ELDEST SON of good King Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, was more like his mother-in-law, Jezebel, than his father. After Jehoshaphat's death, Jehoram killed his brothers and turned his kingdom toward the gods of the Amorites (i.e., Phoenicians) worshiped by Jezebel. As a result, Jezebel was afflicted with a terrible and horribly painful disease that killed him seven years later. Jehoram's son, Ahaziah, reigned only one year when he was killed by Jehu while visiting his uncle, Ahab's son Joram. Upon his death, Jehoram's wife, Ahab's daughter Athaliah seized the throne, killed the royal family of Judah—the House of David—and reigned as queen for seven years. She appears to have been cut from the same cloth as her mother, Jezebel. But after seven years, the high priest Jehoiada, who'd been secretly raising Ahaziah's youngest son, Joash, declared the boy king, had Athaliah put to death, and tore down the temple of Baal in Jerusalem. At the end of the day, all of the political machinations involving the land of Israel down to the present day are reflections of the war in the unseen realm for control of God's mount of assembly—Zion.
