Happy Holidays, Substance fam! We hope you are all enjoying the holiday season and carving out time for joy and contemplation along with all the festivities that go along with it. For our last show of 2022 we wanted to take an episode and devote it to the Advent & Christmas season and to do so, we invited a guest! Bette Dickinson is an artist and author from Traverse City, Michigan and she just released a beautiful new Advent devotional from InterVarsity Press, "Making Room in Advent: 25 Devotions For a Season of Wonder." The book begins each day's reading with a painting to stop and reflect on and invite the reader to engage in visio divina (Latin: divine seeing). We talk with Bette about her art and how engaging with it can help us in ways that a merely textual devotional may not, how the incarnation spotlights the lowly & underrepresented, the joys of slowing down during the holiday season, and more! We hope you have had a wonderful year and we look forward to being back in your feed on New Year's Day. Merry Christmas! Bette Dickinson returns to the podcast to talk about the inspiration for her series of paintings in her new book, Make Room in Advent: 25 Devotions for a Season of Wonder. Bette appeared as a guest on the podcast in Septemeber to tell us about the book. In this episode we dive deeper into why the Church needs to integrate more art into spiritual practices and how art actually makes room in our lives for God to speak. We discuss right and left brained church and artists as being essential workers in leading others into deeper, more meaningful spiritual lives. The book is available to order anywhere books are sold. At the end of the episode Bette leads a visio divina practice and a breath prayer. One was a statement of human limitations – I am a virgin. The other was a statement of surrender – I am the Lord's servant. These statements led Bette to reflect on her own human limitations and posture of surrender.-We discussed how Bette's book was developed amidst a cohort of women who prayerfully discussed and developed their unique contribution to the Kingdom. They played an Elizabeth-like role for each other - similar to how Elizabeth encouraged Mary. -We talked about how Luke, a researched and thoughtful physician, used story over facts to tell the story of Jesus birth and how this points to our need to connect both our right and left brain to the story of Scripture.-Bette also noted that Luke centered his entire birth narrative around Mary and Elizabeth… and yet we often don't hear this story in a way that highlights these two women and the critical role they played.-Bette introduced us to the concept of Visio Divina – where it came from and why it can be a meaningful practice. She highlights art as a way to help us slow down and connect to the story of Scripture in a different way.You can connect with Bette at: www.bettedickinson.com.And follow her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bette_dickinson/If you want to be guided in free a Visio Divina experience, text WONDER to 55444 and follow the prompts. All Shall Be Well: Conversations with Women in the Academy and Beyond
"It's okay to acknowledge that I have human limits and I can't do it all." — Bette Dickinson Bette Dickinson talks with us about observing Advent when schedules are full, the spiritual power of art, and the joy of embracing our human limits. Let me invite you into a conversation with Bette Dickinson, artist and author of Making Room in Advent: 25 Devotions for a Season of Wonder. In this beautiful new book, Bette invites readers into her personal reflections about Advent and the Christmas story through words and through printed images of her own original paintings. I loved talking with Bette about the way art can lead us into places of spiritual transformation, about the creative work that happens within all of us, and about the complex nature of motherhood and pregnancy in literal and metaphorical terms. Bette offers a real sense of grace and realism as we talk about Advent in the context of a busy December, and her words on the gift of embracing our human limits speak clearly to the lives of academics. Our conversation is full of delight and depth, and I think you'll enjoy listening in. We're sharing this interview with you well before Advent begins on November 27. Advent always sneaks up on me, so we wanted to release this episode as an invitation for you to give some thought to the way you'd like to observe the season of Advent. Bette's new book is an excellent choice for this year. My conversation with Bette Dickinson was such a breath of fresh air. Bette is a prophetic artist, writer, and speaker who invites you to connect with God through visual parables. Through her work, Bette helps her audience connect the inner life of spiritual formation with the outer life of mission. Her new devotional book, Making Room in Advent just launched, and not only did Bette write this book but also illustrated it as well.Bette shares what it is like to awaken our soul to the beauty and wonder of God all around you. While she was working and creating Making Room in Advent, she was truly able to journey alongside Mary. You don't want to miss how this all connects in our conversation. God's timing is amazing! One of her takeaways was, that Mary was underqualified by the world's standards to be Jesus' mom. And the truth is we can feel like that a lot of times. "Just like Mary, I am human. And that is what qualifies me to be used by God." - Bette DickinsonBette gives us the encouragement to embody God in our own story. Because when we receive the grace of God, He wants to partner with us just as we are. I hope you enjoy our conversation and that you can see the beauty and wonder in your own story.Reflection QuestionsI encourage you to incorporate breath prayer into your week to help you slow down and connect with God.Have you felt underqualified?
