I'll admit it. All us guys, at one point or another, have fantasized about being some one-man action hero that kicks a bunch of bad guy butt to rescue a beautiful woman. It's a great fantasy until reality kicks in and you start thinking “I don't wanna do that! I could experience pain!!!” The main character in this week's movie, “Novocaine”, doesn't have to worry about the pain part AND he reluctantly has to be a one-man action hero. “Novocaine” stars Jack Quaid as Nate Caine, a young bank assistant manager who has a condition that prevents him from feeling any pain. He lives a solitary, boring, uneventful life as a soft-spoken, gentle guy until one day a beautiful co-worker named Sherry, played by Amber Midthunder, asks him to lunch. This takes the movie into cutesy-pie rom-com territory where Nate and Sherry just click as a couple and all of a sudden Nate is walking on sunshine. That is until the bank robbery. Nate's bank is hit by some no-good bad guy bank robbers and wouldn't you know it, they take Sherry as a hostage to get away from the cops. Well Nate isn't going to let some baddies just take his new lady love away from him without him doing something about it. Gone is the fantasy and enter reality. Nate is on a mission to rescue HIS beautiful woman and he's got the advantage of feeling no pain. This of course makes for so many great scene possibilities and writer Lars Jacobson digs in and takes full advantage. Does Nate succeed and save his damsel in distress? Of course he does! However, is it worth going to the theater to see it? Check out this episode to find out! “Novocaine” also stars Ray Nicholson, Jacob Batalon, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh, Conrad Kemp, Evan Hengst, Craig Jackson, Lou Beatty Jr., Garth Collins and Tristan de Beer.Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

Donald Trump is being called a fascist – by his former appointees, as well as by his opponent Kamala Harris. On this week's On the Media, a historian of fascism explains why he sounded the alarm back in 2018. Plus, the science behind why horror films make your skin crawl.[01:00] Host Brooke Gladstone speaks with Jason Stanley, a professor of Philosophy at Yale University and who has written several books on fascism. Her book Nightmare Fuel: The Science of Horror Films delves into question – why do we crave being scared senseless in the movie theater? When Jordan Peele's horror film Get Out hit theaters in 2017, it became an unexpected blockbuster and cultural phenomenon. The movie follows a black man named Chris, played by Daniel Kaluuya, who goes to visit his white girlfriend's family in the country. Shortly after arriving, Chris starts to notice that something seems off and the other black people he encounters act... strangely. Slowly it's revealed that Chris' girlfriend, Rose Armitage, played by Allison Williams, and her family are a part of a cult that hijacks black people's bodies and transplants the brains of their white members inside them. Their victims are still conscious but trapped in "The Sunken Place,” alive but unable to change their fate. Betty Gabriel played Georgina the maid, whose body is possessed by the white matriarch of the Armitage family. Gabriel, in a sense, played two characters at once. This Halloween, OTM producer Rebecca Clark-Callender did a deep dive on the history of Black horror movies, and sat down with Gabriel to ask about how she prepared to play a woman possessed. For this midweek podcast we're bringing you an extended cut of their conversation.
With early midterm voting underway, Fox News has been increasing crime coverage to drive voters to the polls. On this week's On the Media, a look at the ways fear impacts our minds and bodies, both on and off screen. Plus, how filmmakers like Jordan Peele have inspired a renaissance of the Black Horror genre. 1. Philip Bump [@pbump], national correspondent at The Washington Post, on what Fox News' focus on crime can tell us about the Republican party's midterm strategy. Listen. 2. Nina Nesseth [@cestmabiologie], science writer and author of "Nightmare Fuel: The Science of Horror Films," on the neuroscience behind horror films. Listen. 3. OTM producer Rebecca Clark-Callender [@Rebecca_CC_] takes a deep dive into the history of Black horror to see what it is and who it is for, featuring: Robin R. Means Coleman, Ida B. Wells and Ferdinand Barnett Professor of Communication Studies at Northwestern University and author of Horror Noire: A History of Black American Horror from the 1890s to Present; Tananarive Due, an author, screenwriter, and lecturer on Afrofuturism and Black Horror at University of California, Los Angeles; Rusty Cundieff, writer and director of Tales from the Hood (1995); and Betty Gabriel, actor widely known for her acclaimed performance as "Georgina" in Jordan Peele's blockbuster Get Out (2017). This week on black Black Girl Film Club, we do a deep dive into the dystopian near future of Upgrade (2018), a cyperpunk revenge tale directed by Leigh Whannell and starring Logan Marshall Green, Betty Gabriel, Harrison Gilbertson, and Melanie Vallejo. In this episode, we try to understand what it would be like to live in the kind of world where police drones and implanted identification codes are commonplace, body mods are reserved for the military, and disability seems to be nonexistent (or readily "curable"). What kinds of tech does the movie think we should we be afraid of and is this world worth saving? That's right, we lost this entire episode due to technological issues and re-recorded it because this film is just that good. If you haven't seen it yet, go watch it before you listen to this episode. We wont spoil anything here, but we will leave you with one very important piece of advice: Four months into a relationship is TOO SOON to meet her family. Originally titled "Stem", "Upgrade" (2018) is a phenomenal underrated low budget sci-fi film by Australian writer/director Leigh Whannell. Darren’s back from New York, and Anthony is ill; neither event is related. We review Leigh Whannell’s gruesome action flick, ‘Upgrade’ (Logan Marshall-Green, Betty Gabriel, Harrison Gilbertson), Ari Aster’s directorial debut ‘Hereditary’ (Toni Collette, Milly Shapiro, Alex Wolff, Gabriel Byrne) and Bart Layton’s ‘American Animals’ (Evan Peters, Blake Jenner, Barry Keoghan). But we don’t stop there, so get comfortable! Darren speaks on the Andre Leon Talley documentary ‘The Gospel According to Andre’, Anthony gives a very timely rundown of James Cameron’s least successful record breaking film, ‘Titanic’, and Ann Dowd is in everything. A ghoulish friend makes his return.

Zac, Ellie and Amanda give a two part recap of the advanced screening of Westworld S2, EP event in Atlanta on April 19th! In this half we cover one of the most experiential events in Atlanta this year! Next week on Westworld Wednesday's we'll release the second part that covers our review of the first episode. Fernbank Museum of Natural History was the perfect venue to screen Westworld! The irony to screen Michael Crichton's Westworld in a museum that has Dinosaurs everywhere was amazing! It also felt like we were attending a Delos Incorporated gala to view Westward! But this one, unlike in the show, ended much better! Seeing the beautiful women dressed in all white dresses really helped set the mood before going into the theater! This event was very different from Tribecca & Comic Con panels, for Atlanta we had a more southern charm with an intimate vibe and high-end but laid back at the same time. Themed Cocktail drinks - Felix Elixir and Maeve Millay was excellent! Even the catering was great!! Proof Pudding did a great job! Production designer Zeke Waters from Savannah College of Art worked with Amanda Ray and HBO on designing a beautiful reception space with images from the show and a cowboy hat wall. The energy of the guests was high and were exciting to see the show! After the screening, Astronaut, Leland Melvin gave a great interview with Leo Nam (who plays Felix Lutz) - was down to earth, hilarious, personable, gave great advice to actors! The audience asked questions about Leo and his experience on the show. Betty Gabriel, new cast member in Westworld Season 2 and from the movie Get Out would have been a great addition to the panel. MCSFO has a very small team and could not have done this without them!
The Punisher Season 2 casts 3 new characters, The Rocketeer animated series, Gemma Chan cast in Captain Marvel, HBO's Farenheit 451 trailer, Betty Gabriel cast in Counterpart season 2. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Betty Gabriel is the brilliant star of Universal Pictures’ “Get Out,” the comedy-horror-satire hit from the now Academy Award-nominee Jordan Peele. As the mysterious maid Georgina, she blew audiences away with one particularly disturbing scene involving her repeating the word “no”—and established for the former delivery worker her big break as an actor. The game-changing “Get Out” has won its fair share of accolades throughout this film awards season, and is up for four Oscars, including Best Picture. For over 50 years, Backstage has been the most trusted place for actors to find jobs and career advice, and for casting professionals to find the right performers for their projects. “In the Envelope: An Awards Podcast” features intimate, inspirational interviews with some of the most exciting actors and awards contenders working today.
