What does it take to make a modern espionage thriller feel real? In this episode of State Secrets, Suzanne Kelly sits down with acclaimed director Andrew Bernstein to discuss Jack Ryan: Ghost War — the new feature-length installment of the iconic franchise that brings shadow conflict, intelligence operations, and geopolitical tension into sharp focus. Bernstein — whose work includes The Americans and Ozark — reveals how the production worked directly with the Central Intelligence Agency and MI6 to better understand the realities of intelligence work, the emotional toll of covert operations, and the evolving threats facing the West today. The conversation explores the balance between realism and entertainment, why intelligence professionals connected deeply with the film, and how today's gray zone conflicts — from cyber warfare to disinformation campaigns — are shaping modern storytelling. Bernstein also shares behind-the-scenes insight into filming unprecedented action sequences in central London and what it was like screening the movie at CIA headquarters.

"James Bond" is the longest-running and most successful spy film series, with 25 movies released by Eon Productions since 1962. "Mission: Impossible" doesn't have quite as many films with eight to date, but you also have the long-running 1960s television show. The latest challenger to the genre hasn't been around quite as long, but the series of "Jack Ryan" films, taken from or inspired by Tom Clancy's novels, has been going strong since Alec Baldwin starred in 1990's "The Hunt for Red October." After four more movies starring Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine in the role of Jack Ryan, John Krasinski reprised the role for the streaming series on Amazon Prime Video. Now, Krasinski is bringing his Jack Ryan to theaters with "Jack Ryan: Ghost War." In this episode, co-host Bruce Miller speaks with director Andrew Bernstein, co-star Michael Kelly and stars, writer and producer Krasinski, as well as co-star Sienna Miller. Miller and co-host Terry Lipshetz also talk about the history of the series and spy movies in general. About the show Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, a longtime entertainment reporter who is the retired editor of the Sioux City Journal in Iowa and Terry Lipshetz, a senior producer for Lee Enterprises based in Madison, Wisconsin. Fuji: A Mountain in the Making (Princeton UP, 2025) is A panoramic biography of Japan's iconic mountain from the Ice Age to the present Mount Fuji is everywhere recognized as a wonder of nature and enduring symbol of Japan. Yet behind the picture-postcard image is a history filled with conflict and upheaval. Violent eruptions across the centuries wrought havoc and instilled fear. Long an object of worship, Fuji has been inhabited by deities that changed radically over time. It has been both a totem of national unity and a flashpoint for economic and political disputes. And while its soaring majesty has inspired countless works of literature and art, the foot of the mountain is home to military training grounds and polluting industries. Tracing the history of Fuji from its geological origins in the remote past to its recent inscription as a World Heritage Site, Andrew Bernstein explores these and other contradictions in the story of the mountain, inviting us to reflect on the relationships we share with the nonhuman world and one another. Beautifully illustrated, Fuji presents a rich portrait of one of the world's most celebrated sites, revealing a mountain forever in the making and offering a meditation on the ability of landscape both to challenge and inspire. Dr. Andrew Bernstein and Dr. Meghann Ribbens Discuss Some Problems with American EducationIn this episode, Michael sits down with two sharp and unapologetically rational voices—Dr. Andrew Bernstein and Dr. Meghann Ribbens—to unpack what has gone wrong in American education and why so many students are emerging less prepared, less confident, and less capable of independent thought. From the erosion of academic standards to the cultural shift away from personal responsibility, Bernstein and Ribbens explore the deeper moral and philosophical causes behind the crisis. They examine the rise of ideological conformity, the abandonment of facts and logic in favour of emotionalism, and the way government-run schools incentivise mediocrity rather than excellence. Both guests bring decades of experience to the table: Bernstein as an author and philosopher who has written extensively on heroic education and the value of great literature; Ribbens as an educator and scholar who has watched the system decline from the inside. Together, they articulate a clear picture of what education should be—an uplifting, rigorous, confidence-building path centred on knowledge, reasoning, and the joy of achievement. This conversation is direct, principled, and free of euphemisms. It cuts through the noise to identify the root problems and the real solutions.About Michael Liebowitz – Host of The Rational EgoistMichael Liebowitz is the host of The Rational Egoist podcast, a philosopher, author, and political activist committed to the principles of reason, individualism, and rational self-interest. Episode 181 Artificial Intelligence and Electronic Music Playlist Time Track Time Start Introduction 05:42 00.00 1. Cornelius Cardew, “Treatise: String Orchestra (2025). The first of three AI interpretations of a piece by Cardew composed between 1963 and 1967. The work was written as a graphic score. Produced by the team of Professor Shlomo Dubnov of the University of California at San Diego, they used as the basis for an improvisation Cardew's graphical musical score comprising 193 pages of lines, symbols, and various geometric or abstract shapes that largely stray from conventional musical notation (pages 1 to 33 were used). The recordings from Dubnov's team interpreted this graphic score with the help of Open AI's ChatGPT 40 and a program they developed themselves called Music Latent Diffusion Model (MusicLDM), an AI-like algorithm. The recordings show how AI can transform visual stimuli into sound and expand on their interpretation in an experimental music composition. This version is arranged for digital string orchestra. 11:23 05:54 2. Cornelius Cardew, “Treatise” Sinewave” (2025). This version from Dubrov's lab was arranged for sinewave generator. 11:15 17:10 3. Cornelius Cardew, “Treatise: Experimental” (2025). This version from Dubrov's lab was arranged for a mix of instruments defined as “experimental” by the team. 11:32 28:24 4. Valérie Philippin, “Extraits de recherche” (2024). Vocal interaction experiment conducted with vocalist Valérie Philippin while she was in artistic residence at European Research Council REACH project (ERC) at IRCAM. AI interaction in real-time using the Somax2 program. Voice: Valérie Philippin, Somax2 & electronics: Mikhail Malt. 03:52 39:48 5. Horse Lords and The Who/Men, “Zero Degree Machine” (2023). Horse Lords Concert at ERC REACH. Music using Somax2 to interact with the performers and add new parts and instruments in real time. If you hear something other than a guitar, drums, bass, and sax, then it was created by Somax2. You might detect loops of instruments (e.g., saxophone) as well because Somax2 adds to the mix. Horse Lords (Max Eilbacher bass/electronics, Sam Haberman percussion, Owen Gardner guitar, Andrew Bernstein percussion/saxophone). The Who/Men: Gérard Assayag, Mikhail Malt, Reach interactive AI: Somax2; Marco Fiorini, Reach interactive AI: Somax2 and electric guitar; Manuel Poletti, computer music production at IRCAM). The Who/Men are providing guidance for Somax2 in real-time, operating different instances of the program on their laptops. 18:45 43:42 6. PintoCreation “AI-generated Sci-Fi Sci-Fi and Visual Storytelling” (2025). This is just an example of how task-specific AI is being used to generate videos with electronic music soundtracks. This is an excerpt from one of the soundtracks for the many videos they have generated for their YouTube channel. 07:54 01:02:26 7. Artificial Intelligence Music, “Melodic Techno” (2025). Excerpt of AI-generated techno music found on this YouTube site. They explain that the music found here “was composed by an AI, meticulously trained on the nuances of this captivating genre.' I have no idea what AI engine was used, but this is just one example of how many music producers are getting onto the AI train. 06:51 01:10:17 8. Atmoscapia, “Calm Ambient” (2025). This is a purpose-built generative ambient music creator for “Films, Games, YouTube, and Creative Projects.” Billed as an “Instant Ambient Music Generator For Content Creators,” you use it by selecting styles and lengths up to an hour long. In this case, I chose the style “Calm, Meditative, Dreamy.” Two other categories are also provided for “Cinematic, Dramatic, Emotional” and “Dark, Horror, Suspense.” Those are the extent of the current choices in the free version. It delivers a soundtrack that you can download. 10:00 01:17:08 9. Thom Holmes, “Thom DeepAI Noise Music” (2025). In an attempt to generate something more experimental using an AI system, I turned to DeepAI and gave it the following instructions: “Experimental, noise sounds. No melody, no harmony, no rhythm. Randomized intervals of silence. Randomized mood swings.” It was short as I was not using the premium version, but it came closer than some other AI programs to creating a work that was more closely aligned with experimental. 1:45 01:41:49 Opening background music: Ambient music generated by the Atmoscapia AI system using the “Dark, Horror, Suspense” setting (excerpt). Introduction to the podcast voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Mount Fuji is at once instantly familiar and seemingly immutable, yet it always remains strange and changeable. Its postcard-perfect peak is known around the world as a wonder of nature and a symbol of Japan. But behind that outline lies a far more complicated history.Over the centuries, Fuji's eruptions devastated farmland and terrified villagers. Revered as a sacred presence, its divine inhabitants changed with shifts in belief and power. Once locally known, Fuji later became claimed as a national emblem, its slopes inspiring poetry, painting, and pilgrimage—and serving as the stage for political and economic disputes. In Fuji: A Mountain in the Making (Princeton, 2025), Andrew Bernstein traces this layered story from the mountain's surprisingly recent geological beginnings to its recognition as a World Heritage Site. The result is a portrait of a place both familiar and unsettled: a mountain still in the making, continually remade by the humans who live with it, use it, revere it, and visit it.For show notes and more, go to the Historically Thinking Substack page for this episode.

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. Last week, mere minutes after our Tuesday evening recording session, we were both delighted and disheartened when Marvel Studios dropped its “Look Ahead | Disney Plus'' trailer, which not only provided release dates, but showcased our first official look at footage, for a whopping 8 streaming projects. Here's what we learned: Box office juggernaut Deadpool & Wolverine will be available to stream on the platform beginning November 12, 2024. We already knew Daredevil: Born Again is set to begin streaming March 4, 2025, but the trailer, which was intercut with footage from the other shows, gave us our first look at the villain Muse, the return of Jon Bernthal's Punisher, as well as Bullseye, and perhaps most surprisingly the inclusion of Ms. Marvel's dad, Yusuf Khan What If Season 3 will begin streaming this December 22nd, with no word as to whether that will be a weekly or daily release, like last year. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will begin airing January 29th, 2025 Riri William's Ironheart makes her return beginning June 24th, 2025 Eyes of Wakanda, the animated anthology series is set for an August 6th, 2025 debut Marvel Zombies will premiere sometime in October 2025, with the live action Wonder Man series starring Yahya Abdul Mateen II arriving later that December. In a final marketing push ahead of its December 3 premiere, Lucasfilm released final art, a poster, and a new trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The series, which is helmed by Spider-Man filmmaker Jon Watts, is an Amblin Entertainment-inspired coming of age tale that follows four youths who embark on a swashbuckling adventure with unexpected revelations. The trailer is in keeping with what we've seen from the series thus far, which is to say it feels tonally divergent from anything we've seen in Star Wars before, including new species, planets, and a synth-pop heavy score. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros is gearing up to bring the world of George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones to the silver screen with at least one film in early development. And that's pretty much all we know – there's no creative talent attached yet, meaning no writer or director, much less any word regarding a potential time, setting, or characters that might be involved. Amazon MGM Studios is testing actors for the role of Lara Croft in Phoebe Waller-Bridge's upcoming Tomb Raider series. Sophie Turner and Lucy Boynton top Amazon's wish list, according to Deadline. Scary Movie creators Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans are reuniting after 18 years to develop a new film in the franchise for Paramount and Miramax. Kelly Macdonald, known for Boardwalk Empire and No Country for Old Men, has joined the cast of DC Studios' Lanterns. Amazon MGM Studios is developing a Jack Ryan film, continuing the series storyline with John Krasinski, Wendell Pierce, and Michael Kelly. Andrew Bernstein will direct. Early box office projections show Wicked opening at over $80 million domestically and Gladiator 2 at $65 million, both debuting on November 22. Universal Pictures and LEGO have partnered to develop three live-action LEGO films, directed by Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins, and Joe Cornish. Toho has officially greenlit a new Godzilla movie from the director of last year's Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One. Amazon MGM Studios has acquired American Speed, starring Tom Holland and Austin Butler as the scandal-ridden Whittington Brothers, with Oscar-winning producer Charles Roven attached. Ridley Scott revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he's working on a new Alien movie for 20th Century Studios, though it's unclear if it's connected to the Alien: Romulus follow-up or a standalone project. Tom Cruise is in early talks with Paramount for a Days of Thunder sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
