Scott [in Hardcore] share the same forehead sweat…” - Andrew On this week's very special episode, we're celebrating EPISODE 800 with a very sleaze-tastic conversation on Joel Schumacher's 8MM! How funny is that scene with Gandolfini trying to skip town carrying several boxes of pornography? How great is Joaquin in this performance as Max California? And how terrifying is that final showdown at Casa de Machine? PLUS: “Marc Maron” asks Machine who his guys are! 8MM stars Nicolas Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, James Gandolfini, Peter Stormare, Anthony Heald, Catherine Keener, Myra Carter, Amy Morton, and Chris Bauer as Machine; directed by Joel Schumacher. Send us a textIt's Episode 101 and while we're gearing up to charge full speed ahead, we're going to take a quick look back at the halcyon days of the fall/winter of 2024 when two earth-shattering comic book movie bombs were unleashed on the cinema going public. We're talking Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie a Deux starring Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beets and Brendan Gleeson up against JC Chandor's – who are we kidding? Marvel/Sony's Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, Russell Crow, Ariana Debose, Fred Hechinger and Alessandro Nivola. I have assembled my team of elite assassins to pick off and pore over these two fearsome digital age fails, starting with my kid sis and charter member of the Sinatra/Silva Karate dojo Roseanne Caputi, Joe Field hypnotist, psychologist author and quite the crooner, as well as the larger than life, accept-no-substitutes, KING of the real estate drone photography jungle, Gordon Alex Robertson. Before we commence wrestle with those CGI bears and saucy tripper chicks, the synopses. Joker: Folie á DeuxIn this follow up to the inexplicable 2019 mega-hit, The Joker, Arthur Fleck, barely subsists at Arkham State Hospital as he awaits trial for the five, technically six murders he committed in the last film. However, he soon gets his zip back when he is allowed to attend a prison music therapy class and is introduced to fellow inmate Harley “Lee” Quinzel. Together, they share a passionate love affair fueled by music, mayhem and delusions of grandeur.Kraven the HunterAfter being mauled to the point of death by a lion, Sergei Kravinoff, son of notorious Trophy hunter and drug kingpin Nicolai Kravinoff, gains enhanced jungle animal abilities and becomes Kraven The Hunter, a sort of bad guy who fights for the little guy against drug dealers. On his quest to prove himself as the ultimate predator, he confronts his father and half-brother Demetri aka the shapeshifting Chameleon while also teaming up with Calypso, a voodoo potion wielding lawyer. Also, he goes up against The Rhino. So how BAD can they BE?Find out!Watch the podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/jRItWg1TTWg

November is Sword and Sandals month! All month, we'll focus on mythical and mythic-ish movies, starting with 2010's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief! Ben, Bree, Sam, and Vaz break down the watered-down (ha!) first attempt at adapting Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series. Directed by Chris Columbus, starring Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, and Alexandra Daddario, and featuring Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Joe Pantoliano, and Uma Thurman.
We know, we know, this is not a kid's movie, and it breaks our "no post-9/11" rule, but some of us saw this movie at too young an age. It stars Edward Norton, who plays Smoochy, a lovable kid's show host, as he is thrust into the seedy underbelly full of the crime and unsavory characters. Also starring Robin Williams, Danny DeVito (who also directed), Jon Stewart, Catherine Keener, and Harvey Fierstein. Throwbacktheaterpodcast@gmail.com

In this episode, I discuss a sequel that may or may not have really been needed. That sequel is “Joker: Folie a Deux” which means Joker: two people sharing a delusion. The original “Joker” from 2019 was a movie that most people weren't looking forward to but ended up being a $1 billion dollar surprise at the box office. It wasn't just a great movie based on a comic book character. It was a great movie period with it's entertainingly dark atmosphere and menace and a Best Actor Oscar-winning performance from Joaquin Phoenix. Now Phoenix returns to show us the rest of Joker's story after we last saw him being a bad boy at Arkham Asylum. Does he escape? Does he continue to create bloody havoc? Will he meet a pop star in prison? Well, that last one is true as we see in the trailers with Lady Gaga joining the cast as Harley Quinn. Is this movie worth your time, or should you just watch the original again? Find out with this episode. “Joker: Folie a Deux” also stars Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, Harry Lawtey, Leigh Gill, Ken Leung, Jacob Lofland and Bill Smitrovich.Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

Wait…the sisters don't hate it!? This film is receiving a lot of poor reviews, but Emily and Olivia don't think it is as bad as some critics say. The sisters dive deep into the controversial film, exploring its themes, character development, and musical elements. They discuss the film's unique approach to storytelling, the character study of Arthur Fleck, and the implications of the shocking ending. The conversation also touches on underutilized Lady Gaga's role as Lee, Harley Quinn, and the unnecessary courtroom drama; however they ultimately applaud Todd Phillips's artistic choices and how the film challenges audience expectations and norms. Joker: Folie à Deux was directed by Todd Philips, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, and Catherine Keener and was theatrically released on October 4, 2024. For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Lauren LaMagna, Josh Parham & Tom O'Brien to review and discuss the sequel to the Oscar-winning 2019 film "Joker," Todd Phillips's "Joker: Folie à Deux" starring Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener & Zazie Beetz. Already igniting a ton of discourse amongst fans, including receiving the lowest CinemaScore in history for a comic book movie (D), this depressing, dark musical from the original team behind the first film has subverted expectations and given everyone much to talk about regarding its themes, performances, musical numbers, technical craftsmanship and more. Tune in as we discuss these elements, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! Well, here we.... go! Joker: Folie à Deux - the sequel to the polarizing but smash hit Joker - has now hit theaters. it's not secret at this point that Todd Phillips and his team had no intention of making a sequel to the first film but Academy Awards, including one for Joaquin Phoenix himself, and a billion-dollar box office run started to turn some heads over at Warner Bros. This is why I've always been very concerned about this sequel, despite still being a BIG fan of that first movie. The trailers certainly looked impressive but my concerns from a story perspective were not swayed. All that being said, the divisive reactions honestly had me so intrigued to go check this one out. I had the pleasure (I guess?) of seeing this one yesterday so let's discuss whether Joker: Folie à Deux is as good as the first film, in spoiler-free fashion! In this episode of the show we are continuing our August conversations about Ben Stiller in 1998 and we are talking about the mostly forgotten gem written and directed by Neil LaBute, Your Friends & Neighbors. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about the many ways in which this movie fits (or does not) in the 90s indie Hollywood scene, how much it owes to Woody Allen, Mike Nichols and Steven Soderbergh and just how much can be accomplished with four people in a room and not much in terms of production value. We also talk Ben Stiller's facial hair, Catherine Keener's sense of humour and how one scene can pound the viewer into the ground. Tune in and enjoy! Joker 2: Folie à Deux Trailer Explained #jokerfolieadeux #joker2 #joker #ladygaga Warner Bros released the first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux during its studio presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Todd Phillips directed the sequel and co-wrote the film with Scott Silver and Bob Kane. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. The cast also includes Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey, with Zazie Beetz returning from the first film. Philipps discussed Joker (2019) and continued on by explaining what led to the sequel. “When we were making the first movie Joaquin and I always talked about making a sequel really because we were having a great time, but we were never really serious”. He continues, “then when Joker became a huge success, we talked about it during the pandemic and decided to do it and we had a blast doing it.” Continuing about the sequel Philipps mentions Lady Gaga and the musical elements of the upcoming film. “We cast Gaga because she's magic. I was a producer on A Star is Born and that was where I was like she has magic in her.” “I've never talked about it as a musical, but it's a movie where music is an essential element.” “The first ways I described Arthur were as weird and aloof and distant, but he has music in him, he has a grace to him. That informed him a lot in the first film. It didn't seem like that big of a step what we did here.”
On podcasts devoted to free speech and so-called heterodox discourse, the 2018 book The Coddling of the American Mind is probably mentioned more frequently than any other. Written by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt and legal scholar and Greg Lukianoff, who now heads the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), it is effectively the bible of the Heterodox crowd. And now it's a movie. My guests are husband and wife filmmaking team Ted Balaker, who directed the film, and Courtney Moorehead Balaker, who produced it. In this conversation, they discuss how they took a book about ideas and turned it into an engaging, poignant, and often very funny movie about mental health and how it intersects with higher education and campus life. They relay the stories of many of the young people featured in the movie and talk about the process of finding them. They also discuss how the movie ended up on Substack, where it's making history as the first film to stream on that platform. You can watch the film here. GUEST BIO Ted Balaker is an award-winning filmmaker, former think tank scholar and network news producer. He co-founded Korchula Productions, a film production company devoted to making important ideas entertaining, and Free Minds Film, which uses workshops and project-specific consultations to teach independent filmmakers how to reach large audiences. Ted produced the feature film Little Pink House and is the director of The Coddling of the American Mind, based on The New York Times bestselling book by Greg Lukionoff and Jonathan Haidt and the very first feature documentary presented by Substack. Courtney Moorehead Balaker is an award-winning filmmaker, adjunct professor of acting, and co-founder of Korchula Productions, a film production company devoted to making important ideas entertaining. She also co-founded Free Minds Film, which uses workshops and project-specific consultations to teach independent filmmakers how to reach large audiences. Courtney wrote and directed Little Pink House, which stars Catherine Keener as Susette Kelo, the blue-collar woman whose fight against eminent domain abuse went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
