In this episode of “On the Aisle,” host Tom Alvarez Zooms in with Polish‑American Broadway music director and pianist Eugene Gwozdz, tracing his journey from a musical immigrant family in Fort Worth, Texas, to becoming a go‑to collaborator for stars like Betty Buckley, Chita Rivera, Ariana DeBose, and more. Eugene shares wild behind‑the‑scenes stories about helping Buckley learn “Memory,” sight‑reading early workshops of In the Heights, building tribute concerts at Casa Mañana, and shaping new musicals from a Dolly Parton show to a Spanish‑flu piece he composed while waiting in the hospital for a heart transplant. With dishy name‑drops, emotional “pinch me” moments, and a powerful message about following your dreams no matter what, this conversation is a masterclass in resilience, artistry, and the unexpected paths a life in music can take.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Imagine that you are living in your car. One day, it's stolen for a joyride, abandoned and eventually towed away. You get a court order for the return of your car, but then discover that your very home, your 1991 Camry, has been sold for $175. Later, you find out that the towing company has the car back in their possession and holds it hostage for over a year, accruing $21,684 in storage fees. Amanda Ogle didn't have to imagine it because this happened to her in 2017. To help navigate the bureaucratic nightmare, she enlisted the help of Kevin Eggers, J.D. '17, who had just graduated from UW Law and was providing legal aid through the Northwest Consumer Law Center. Ogle's case was Eggers' very first out of law school. After a Seattle Times reporter wrote about the situation, Ogle was contacted by screenwriters who wanted to make her story into a movie. "Tow" premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and opened in theaters nationwide on March 20, 2026. Directed by Stephanie Laing, it stars Rose Byrne and features an ensemble cast including Octavia Spencer, Demi Lovato, Dominic Sessa, Ariana Debose and Corbin Bernsen. In this episode of Discovery, we talk with Eggers and Ogle about the towing dispute and their experiences with the real-life case turning into a movie.
As the 1950s moved on, new talents were emerging, taking up the challenge laid down by Rodgers and Hammerstein to create integrated musicals featuring real characters dealing with real issues. Among others, Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, and Stephen Sondheim heard that challenge and rose to meet it, creating something brand new and incredibly challening for 50s Broadway audiences. West Side Story debuted in 1957 (Erik says 1959 a few times in the episode, ignore him), and its 1961 film adaptation cemented its legacy as a classic. So why has it taken this long to get to it? The reasons are complicated. Crime fiction has rarely produced a protagonist quite like Kay Scarpetta. For decades, Patricia Cornwell's bestselling novels followed the brilliant forensic pathologist and medical examiner navigating grisly cases while balancing the messy emotional realities of family, love, and professional obsession. Now, the long-awaited adaptation has finally arrived in the form of Prime Video's new series “Scarpetta,” starring Nicole Kidman as the iconic medical examiner alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, and more. The show is shepherded by creator and showrunner Liz Sarnoff, whose writing résumé includes “Barry,” “Lost,” “Deadwood,” and “Marco Polo.” The series takes an ambitious approach to Cornwell's world by weaving together two timelines: one set in the late 1990s and another in the present day, allowing the story to explore both the early years of Scarpetta's career and the more seasoned version of the character audiences meet decades later.READ MORE: ‘DTF: St. Louis': Jason Bateman, Linda Cardellini, David Harbour, & Steve Conrad On Vulnerability, Sexual Secrets, & Jason Bateman's MCU Character [Bingeworthy Podcast]On this episode of The Playlist's Bingeworthy podcast, Sarnoff joins host Mike DeAngelo to talk about finally bringing the beloved character to the screen, why the show merges multiple books into a single narrative structure, how Kidman approached the technical realities of forensic work, and how the series distinguishes itself from typical procedural storytelling.
In the Prime Video series Scarpetta, Nicole Kidman plays a tough, smart medical examiner whose latest murder case is entangled with a much earlier one. The show's got a big cast including Jamie Lee Curtis, Bobby Cannavale and Ariana DeBose. Scarpetta is based on a series of successful crime novels by Patricia Cornwell. To manage podcast ad preferences, review the links below:See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

A Note for Jacob: Since my second podcast recording with Matt, I am pleased to report that General Admission Seating for the May 5 event is SOLD OUT!! It is a pleasure to welcome actor Matt DeAngelis back to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Matt grew up on showtunes and Boston sports. Matt studied theatre at the University of Southern Maine and The Boston Conservatory before heading down Route 95 to NYC in 2004. In June 2009, Matt got the call to make his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning production of HAIR with Tony Award winner Diane Paulus at the helm. Matt continued with that production, “Across the Atlantic Sea,” to the West End in the role of “Woof” and then launched the first national US Tour of HAIR and was seen back on Broadway in the “Summer of Love” revival of HAIR.Following his time with the hippies, Matt launched the first national tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT as the “Representative from Jingletown”. Matt's cross-country adventures continued in 2014 with the first national tour of ONCE, where he played “Svec” and five instruments. Over the last five years, Matt has been a veteran of almost 2,000 performances. Thankfully, Matt returned home to Broadway (again with Diane Paulus) in the hit musical WAITRESS, where he starred opposite Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller, two-time Grammy winner Jason Mraz, and seven-time Grammy nominee and the show's composer, Sara Bareilles. He then toured the country with the WAITRESS National Tour as Earl opposite his real-life wife, Christine Dwyer, as Jenna. Upon returning from the road, Matt was a part of developing the World Premiere of The Secret Life of Bees at The Atlantic Theatre Company, directed by Tony Award winner Sam Gold. He also appeared in Orpheus Descending at Theatre for a New Audience. Matt DeAngelis also started the Janice Jam in memory of his mother, Janice, who passed from metastatic breast cancer in 2022. This annual event channels the magic of Broadway to honor those we've lost, uplift those fighting, and fund critical research. This event serves as a yearly celebration of Janice, her love for theater, and raising money for those affected by metastatic breast cancer. On May 5, 2025, a group of Broadway all-stars will join Matt and Christine for this event. Golden Globe and Oscar-winning actor Ariana DeBose, Tony winner John Gallagher, Jr., Tony-nominated actors Jeremy Jordan and Jenn Colella, Caroline Bowman, Kara Lindsay, Krysta Rodriguez, Omar Jose Cardona, Rachel Potter, and Stark Sands are expected to perform. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Matt DeAngelis previewed the 2025 Janice Jam, revealed this year's music director, and explained how you can support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Spielberg has been working towards making a musical for his entire career, so it shouldn't be a surprise that when he finally got to make an all-out musical he brought not only his A-game, but also his deep love and understanding of Old Hollywood musicals with him. This resulted in 2021's West Side Story, an incredibly smart and charming reinterpretation of the Robert Wise film and the Stephen Sondheim original stage play starring Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort, Ariana DeBose, and the original's Rita Moreno. Joining us for this discussion is none other than Bill S. Preston Esq. himself, Mr. Alex Winter. He's a bonafide cinephile, a writer and director himself, and brings all that insight into this conversation about Spielberg's legacy and how West Side Story shows that the master is still at the top of his game. It's an extremely February mix on the latest Breakfast All Day episode, including a terrible Valentine's movie and an excellent Oscar nominee. We begin with "Love Hurts," which we thought had potential because it stars Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose, both recent Academy Award winners. But they have zero chemistry with each other in this action romance. In theaters. Then we review "No Other Land," a documentary from a collective of Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers who captured the Israeli military's occupation of the West Bank's Masefar Yatta. It's up for best documentary feature at the Academy Awards, but it's a miracle that it even exists. In theaters in limited release and expanding to more cities. Finally, we're back with Movie News LIVE!, where we catch up with the state fof awards season between last night's LA Film Critics dinner and all the continuing "Emilia Pérez" madness. Plus: a couple of summer blockbuster trailers are out, and more in the ongoing legal saga between Blake Likely and Justin Baldoni. Join us every Friday at Noon Pacific. For this week's main podcast review, Ema Sasic, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Cody Dericks, and I are here to discuss and review "Love Hurts" starring Ke Huy Quan, Ariana DeBose, Daniel Wu, Marshawn Lynch, Mustafa Shakir, Lio Tipton, Rhys Darby, André Eriksen & Sean Astin. Coming off both of their Oscar wins, Quan and DeBose lead this romantic action comedy from 87North Productions with very mixed (if we're being generous) to disastrous (if we're being sincere) results. Is the silly fun entertaining enough to give this a pass, or are we breaking up with this Valentine's Day film? Please tune in as we discuss the acting, writing, direction, action, humor, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!
