Spike Lee's Summer of Sam should have been the perfect 1999 movie. After Lee's breakthrough 1989 film Do the Right Thing, he was on a roll in the 90s, giving us 1990s' Mo Better Blues, 1991's Jungle Fever, 1992's Malcolm X, 1994's Crooklyn, 1995's Clockers, 1996's Get on the Bus, and 1998's He Got Game. And so a gritty, Scorsese-esque New York crime like Summer of Sam headlined by the rising star Brody and Leguizamo at his most popular seemed like a no-brainer. And maybe because its nearly two and a half hour run time just didn't appeal to audiences in the middle of summer, for some reason SoS (which served as a near-perfect metaphor for the anxiety of pre-Y2K America) just never caught on with critics or at the box office. But has our equally volatile (and true crime obsessed) 2024 America made the film newly relevant? And where does it stand in Spike Lee's oeuvre? To discuss, John welcomed back film and culture writer and frequent guest Julia Sirmons to the show.
Fast-talking and feisty-looking John Leguizamo has continued to impress movie audiences with his versatility: he can play sensitive and naïve young men, such as Johnny in Hangin' with the Homeboys; cold-blooded killers like Benny Blanco in Carlito's Way; a heroic Army Green Beret, stopping aerial terrorists in Executive Decision; and drag queen Chi-Chi Rodriguez in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.Arguably, not since ill-fated actor and comedian Freddie Prinze starred in the smash TV series Chico and the Man had a youthful Latino personality had such a powerful impact on critics and fans alike. John Alberto Leguizamo Peláez was born July 22, 1960, in Bogotá, Colombia, to Luz Marina Peláez and Alberto Rudolfo Leguizamo. He was a child when his family emigrated to the United States. He was raised in Queens, New York, attended New York University and studied under legendary acting coach Lee Strasberg for only one day before Strasberg passed away. The extroverted Leguizamo started working the comedy club circuit in New York and first appeared in front of the cameras in an episode of Miami Vice. His first film appearance was a small part in Mixed Blood, and he had minor roles in Casualties of War and Die Hard 2 before playing a liquor store thief who shoots Harrison Ford in Regarding Henry. His career really started to soar after his first-rate performance in the independent film Hangin' with the Homeboys as a nervous young teenager from the Bronx out for a night in brightly lit Manhattan with his buddies, facing the career choice of staying in a supermarket or heading off to college and finding out that the girl he loves from afar isn't quite what he thought she was.The year 1991 was also memorable for other reasons, as he hit the stage with his show John Leguizamo: Mambo Mouth, in which he portrayed seven different Latino characters. The witty and incisive show was a smash hit and won the Obie and Outer Circle Critics Award, and later was filmed for HBO, where it picked up a CableACE Award. He returned to the stage two years later with another satirical production poking fun at Latino stereotypes titled John Leguizamo: Spic-O-Rama. It played in Chicago and New York, and won the Drama Desk Award and four CableACE Awards. In 1995 he created and starred in the short-lived TV series House of Buggin', an all-Latino-cast comedy variety show featuring hilarious sketches and comedic routines. The show scored two Emmy nominations and received positive reviews from critics, but it was canceled after only one season. The gifted Leguizamo was still keeping busy in films, with key appearances in Super Mario Bros., Romeo + Juliet and Spawn. In 1998 he made his Broadway debut in John Leguizamo: Freak, a "demi-semi-quasi-pseudo-autobiographical" one-man show, which was filmed for HBO by Spike Lee.Utilizing his distinctive vocal talents, he next voiced a pesky rat in Doctor Dolittle before appearing in the dynamic Spike Lee-directed Summer of Sam as a guilt-ridden womanizer, as the Genie of The Lamp in the exciting Arabian Nights and as Henri DE Toulouse Lautrec in the visually spectacular Moulin Rouge!.He also voiced Sid in the animated Ice Age, co-starred alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in Collateral Damage and directed and starred in the boxing film Undefeated. Subsequently, Leguizamo starred in the remake of the John Carpenter hit Assault on Precinct 13 and George A. Romero's long-awaited fourth "Dead" film, Land of the Dead. There can be no doubt that the remarkably talented Leguizamo has been a breakthrough performer for the Latino community in mainstream Hollywood, in much the same way that Sidney Poitier crashed through celluloid barriers for African-Americans in the early 1960s.Among his many strengths lies his ability to not take his ethnic background too seriously but also to take pride in his Latino heritage. Please enjoy my conversation with John Leguizamo.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

How lucky we are to have Jordan Barr join us this week. They're a true Leguizamo fan and one of the funniest people we know. This week, we watched "The Survivor" - a deeply depressing biographical drama released in 2021 about Harry Haft. Haft was a Polish man who survived Auschwitz concentration camp by taking part in fatal boxing matches with other inmates. The cast is stacked, the music is amazing and it's very full on. Also, Danny Devito is there which we LOVE, although we suspect they used a stand-in from time to time... maybe...John plays Pepe. He is Harry's boxing coach and he has a little moustache. Alfredo de Villa directs films which layer complex characters onto the backdrop of vibrant emotions; irreverent humor and interweaving narrative themes which take the lead. They carry the weight of strong characters as they brace themselves for the reality they're immersed in after not realizing the fact until someone, or something or their own voice rises to the surface and informs who they really are. His first film, Washington Heights, is a testament to that reality. Alfredo accompanied the juxtaposition of art, comics, familial love and respect with the culturally-diverse eponymous New York City neighborhood which acted as his canvas. The film, which Alfredo co-wrote with Pulitzer prize-winner Junot Diaz, starred Tomas Milian and Manny Perez, and featured Bobby Cannavale and Danny Hoch in supporting roles, and was released at the Tribeca Film Festival where it was acquired by Lionsgate. He next directed the dance-centered Yellow, which featured Roselyn Sanchez, Bill Duke and D.B. Sweeney on which he had mixed experiences; however, it allowed him to finance his third film - the seminal Adrift in Manhattan, which premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival in Dramatic Competition. The film featured riveting performances from Heather Graham, Victor Rasuk and Dominic Chianese alongside Elizabeth Peña, William Baldwin and Marlene Forte. His next film Nothing Like the Holidays, brought him back to his stylistic roots in terms of form and humor, and was made for Overture Films. It featured an ensemble cast helmed by Alfred Molina, Debra Messing, Luis Guzman, Freddie Rodriguez, Jay Hernandez, Melonie Diaz and reunited him with Elizabeth Peña, who played the matriarch of a Chicago, Puerto Rican family in Humboldt Park. Then came the comically-hilarious Fugly, based on John Leguizamo's one-man show, Ghetto Klown, starring Leguizamo opposite Radha Mitchell, Rosie Perez and Griffin Dunne. He is also a prolific commercial director, and graduate of Columbia's MFA program. In our conversation, we discussed his Mexican upbringing; mental health undertones in his work; films which influenced his diverse cinematic palate; and showing his son Pulp Fiction for the first time.Opening Credits: HoliznaCC0 - Sick With Love I CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication; Crowander - Sloopy I Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0); Closing Credits: Siddhartha Corsus - The Fire of Your Peace I Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0).

Trust the fungus! David Gonzalez from the podcasts Reel Chronicles and Chop Talk and the movie news and review site TheCinematicReel.com returns to the show to be the Luigi to Mark's Mario. They enter the dino dimension and discuss Super Mario Bros. for its 30th anniversary this month! The first movie to be adapted from a video game was released in the US on May 28, 1993, and Mark has wanted a meteorite necklace ever since. The guys share what they love about this guilty pleasure sci-fi adventure (like a mattress ride through a tunnel!) and everything that makes them scratch their heads (too much to list here). Plus, they discuss all the actors who were apparently in consideration for the roles and the names will confuse you even more.
Latino Rebels entertainment correspondent Cristina Escobar steps into the host seat for a conversation with actor and comedian John Leguizamo to discuss his passion and activism in Hollywood as well as his new show on MSNBC, "Leguizamo Does America."

Nothing is impossible, listeners. Improbable? Unlikely? Sure, but never impossible. If you need any more proof, just look at the new Nintendo movie that hit theaters this week, something fans thought they'd never see again after the subject of this BOP n' A Tragedy audio commentary, 1993's Super Mario Bros! You're heard the jokes, the brutal behind-the-scenes stories, and the lamentations of Leguizamo, but the BOP Crew (okay, mostly Jamie) aren't content with leaving the first video game movie on the scrapheap. Between the eight (!) scripts that slowly mutated a fantasy comedy into a cyberpunk thriller-- then tried to walk it back at the last minute, the truly stellar makeup and animatronic work, a cast no version of this movie deserved, and an unforgettable cityscape that rivals the best sci-fi worlds of the 90's, there's plenty more to this bob-omb than you've been led to believe, and if Cody can avoid dying from fungal poisoning before the end of the commentary, you might hear it all! So grab your THWOMP boots, cover up your framed photo of Bob Hoskins, and get ready to trust mushrooms with your mortal soul, because Box Office Pulp is here to walk the dinosaur... whatever it is that means.Pre-order your copy of The Supa Koopa Cousins by downloading the commentary track here! Please enjoy my conversation with John Leguizamo.

On a recent episode of his television show, Bill Maher weighed in on the James Franco-John Leguizamo controversy. Maher contended that Leguizamo should not be complaining about a non-Latino playing Castro because Leguizamo has played other ethnicities in movies in the past. Rick Sanchez fires back saying that Maher is completely missing the point, is oversimplifying the problem, and deceiving his audience just to get laughs. Latinos aren't upset because a non-Latino is playing a Latino role; Latinos are upset because they continue to be represented in negative, stereotypical ways on screen and then the moment a plumb role like this comes around, it goes to a non-Latino. Sanchez is joined by show producer Scotty Mednick and independent filmmaker Edwin Pagan as they break down the problem of Latino type-casting in Hollywood. They conclude that Latinos aren't insisting that they get all the top roles in movies, but rather that the power players in Hollywood need to be open to new ideas and begin casting Latinos in other types of roles besides criminals, gardeners, and, maids. It's not about owning, it's about sharing.
"Playing with Fire" is a 2019 family comedy directed by Andy Fickman of "Mall Cop 2" fame. It follows the story of John Cena and his arm veins as they fight fire and work their way into our horny little hearts. Jake Carson (Cena) is the superintendent of a group of Smoke Jumpers in California. When three kids come into his life unexpectedly, we are met with some very funny scenarios and a very unrealistic adoption. Leguizamo plays Rodrigo Torres, one of the Smoke Jumpers that works along side John Cena's muscles. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
