Rated R for Romance and Robots This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl kick things off with a live trailer watch of Ironheart—because nothing says excitement like corporate-mandated teen genius content. Then it's a double feature of cinematic chaos with reviews of Love Hurts (aka “What if John Wick cried more?”) and Novocaine (the feel-nothing action movie we didn't know we needed). Finally, we plug into the emotionally unavailable but highly bingeable Murderbot, Apple TV+'s latest attempt to make us root for a killer android with anxiety. Buckle up—this episode has pain, no pain, and just enough heart. Text the Popcorn Pundits Podcast and let us know what you think! We'd love to hear from you. This week on The Popcorn Pundits, James goes full action hero, Peter tries to feel something (anything), and Nikky flips open the cinematic time capsule for her latest "Nikky's Sequel" throwback!
I'll admit it. All us guys, at one point or another, have fantasized about being some one-man action hero that kicks a bunch of bad guy butt to rescue a beautiful woman. It's a great fantasy until reality kicks in and you start thinking “I don't wanna do that! I could experience pain!!!” The main character in this week's movie, “Novocaine”, doesn't have to worry about the pain part AND he reluctantly has to be a one-man action hero. “Novocaine” stars Jack Quaid as Nate Caine, a young bank assistant manager who has a condition that prevents him from feeling any pain. He lives a solitary, boring, uneventful life as a soft-spoken, gentle guy until one day a beautiful co-worker named Sherry, played by Amber Midthunder, asks him to lunch. This takes the movie into cutesy-pie rom-com territory where Nate and Sherry just click as a couple and all of a sudden Nate is walking on sunshine. That is until the bank robbery. Nate's bank is hit by some no-good bad guy bank robbers and wouldn't you know it, they take Sherry as a hostage to get away from the cops. Well Nate isn't going to let some baddies just take his new lady love away from him without him doing something about it. Gone is the fantasy and enter reality. Nate is on a mission to rescue HIS beautiful woman and he's got the advantage of feeling no pain. This of course makes for so many great scene possibilities and writer Lars Jacobson digs in and takes full advantage. Does Nate succeed and save his damsel in distress? Of course he does! However, is it worth going to the theater to see it? Check out this episode to find out! “Novocaine” also stars Ray Nicholson, Jacob Batalon, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh, Conrad Kemp, Evan Hengst, Craig Jackson, Lou Beatty Jr., Garth Collins and Tristan de Beer.Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

In the gleefully grisly action movie Novocaine, Jack Quaid plays a sweet, nerdy guy who does not experience physical pain. He falls for a woman (Amber Midthunder) who's determined to get him to leave his safe, risk-averse life behind. That happens in a big and very bloody way when she gets kidnapped by bank robbers, and he sets out to rescue her.To access bonus episodes and sponsor-free listening for Pop Culture Happy Hour, subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour+ at plus.npr.org/happy. Hey everybody, welcome back to another review here on MOVIE Morning. Today, I'm reviewing one of my most anticipated action, mid-budget films of the whole year: NOVOCAINE, starring Jack Quaid. The trailer for this film that came out a few months ago immediately put this film on my radar. It had a U.S. release just a few days ago and I had the chance to see it a bit early, relatively, here in the U.K. thanks to a Mystery Screening. So far, Jack Quaid's already been having a pretty good year because I was a big fan of Companion, the horror-comedy that came out at the end of January. So, is Novocaine one of the most fun action films of recent memory? It's a Pi Day miracle: We recorded these reviews in the same place at the same time for the first time in a long time. Five years, to be exact. And it was so nice to be together again at Alonso's apartment on this rainy day in LA. We begin with "The Electric State," an empty, ugly, $320 million action extravaganza from longtime MCU directors Anthony and Joe Russo. It's a retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic story set in the '90s, after humans and robots have gone to war. The ridiculous cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Ke Huy Quan and Woody Harrelson as Mr. Peanut. Yes, you read that right. Streaming now on Netflix. We were also disappointed with "Opus," about a legendary pop star who invites a group of journalists to his remote retreat to listen to his first album in three decades. It's an A24 horror movie, and it feels awfully familiar. It also features an impressive cast including Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis and Amber Midthunder. In theaters now. And over at our Patreon, we recap the latest episode of "Daredevil: Born Again" on Disney+. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us -- we'll try to do this in person again soon! This week Evan, Megan, and Dave watched one dud and one banger. The dud: THE ELECTRIC STATE (1:55), the latest crap-fest from the Russo brothers. This unfunny sci-fi comedy stars Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, and Ke Huy Quan. The banger: NOVOCAINE (26:00), in which assistant bank manager Jack Quaid has a genetic condition in which he can't feel pain. So when bank robbers kidnap his would-be girlfriend (Amber Midthunder), he uses the condition to his advantage to try to save her. Over on Patreon, we talk about the 2006 Spike Lee heist film INSIDE MAN.
Movie reviews continue on the show with seven new releases this week. Steve Prokopy looks at the chaos of a young woman and her Zambian family (On Becoming a Guinea Fowl) while Samara Weaving plays a pop star dealing with a stalker (Borderline). John Malkovich is another pop star whom Ayo Edebiri discovers may be part of a cult (Opus). Daffy Duck and Porky Pig try to save the world from zombies and aliens (The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie) while Chris Pratt and Millie Bobbie Brown live in a world of robots (The Electric State). Jack Quaid can feel no pain while trying to rescue his girlfriend (Novocaine) and Steven Soderbergh gives us Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender as married spies (Black Bag). 0:00 - Intro 1:17 - On Becoming a Guinea Fowl 9:04 - Borderline 16:14 – The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie 23:41 – The Electric State 36:24 - Opus 50:17 - Novocaine 1:03:08 - Black Bag 1:14:59 - Outro

For the past ten years, Dan Berk and Bobby Olsen have teamed up to bring you some amazing films. You may have seen their directorial debut Body, their black comedy horror Villains, or the science fiction thriller Significant Other. Their most recent collaboration is Novocaine, starring Jack Quaid as Nathan Caine, a mild-mannered introvert with a rare disorder, congenital insensitivity to pain (CIP), who must rescue the girl of his dreams who has been taken hostage in a bank robbery. The film is action-packed with an incredible cast: Quaid, Amber Midthunder, and Ray Nicholson. It's in theaters right now.Dan & Bobby join us to talk about Novocaine, the movie posters that graced their college dorm, and the alien Station from Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. Plus, praise for practical effects and the enduring charm of Jack Quaid. Then, Jordan turns the page to talk about journalist Emily St. James' new book Woodworking. It's a beautiful coming-of-age story that you must read. Feeling Seen is hosted by Jordan Crucchiola and is a production Maximum Fun. Need more Feeling Seen? WHAT A GREAT TIME!! Coy Jandreau sits down with the cast of Novocaine for an exciting deep dive into the action-packed, romantic thrill ride that has audiences buzzing. In the first half, Jack Quaid (The Boys, Oppenheimer, Companion, Scream 5) and Amber Midthunder (Prey, Roswell, New Mexico) discuss their on-screen chemistry, influences from classic films like True Romance and Before Sunrise, and how their characters' playlists shaped their performances. Jack reveals his dream of seeing Nathan Kane cosplays, while Amber playfully confirms the fan-coined "Sherry Cherry" as canon. Then, Coy chats with Jacob Batalon (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Reginald the Vampire) and Ray Nicholson (Smile 2, Licorice Pizza) about the film's action sequences, the challenge of balancing romance and adrenaline, and how shooting in Cape Town brought the story to life. This Friday is so jam-packed with new movies that we wanted to review a couple of them early for you here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with the action comedy "Novocaine," starring Jack Quaid as a mild-mannered bank manager who feels no pain. When robbers kidnap the woman he adores (Amber Midthunder), he finds his affliction is actually an asset. One of us liked this movie better than the other. But we both loved "Black Bag," starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as British spies who love each other but don't totally trust each other. This is the second film this year from director Steven Soderbergh and writer David Koepp, following "Presence" in January. It's sleek, sexy and stylish. This is a spoiler-free review. Join us Friday for reviews of "The Electric State" on Netflix and the indie drama "Opus." We look forward to seeing you then. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Last Wednesday morning, Marvel Television treated fans to the long awaited first official teaser trailer for Daredevil: Born Again. The trailer was met with universal praise for its dark tone and brutal depictions of violence, elements that it shares with the beloved Netflix series. The nine-episode first season premieres March 4 on Disney Plus. In some Captain America news, it was confirmed that Brave New World will have a total runtime of one hour and 58 minutes, which ties it with Ant-Man & The Wasp as the seventh shortest MCU flick to date. It will also be the first Captain America film under two hours long. It's brand new news today, Ryan Gosling is in negotiations to star in Shawn Levy's future Star Wars film. Levy's film has been in development with Lucasfilm since 2022, and getting Gosling seems like it could be a major step in getting the film truly off the ground and into the galaxy far, far away. Last we knew, the film was not to be set within the Skywalker saga The use of AI has been a frequent hot topic for Hollywood in recent years, reaching a seeming fever pitch during the 2023 WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes as a major point of negotiation. While the dust seemed to have settled a bit with the resolution of those strikes, new controversies plaguing high profile films and filmmakers have brought the discussion back to the forefront. First, Taxi Driver writer and First Reformed director, Paul Schrader, opined, in a since much lambasted Facebook post, the benefits of using a platform like ChatGPT for film ideas, in contrast to waiting the months it can take writers to ideate. Elsewhere, awards season favorite and Oscar hopeful, The Brutalist, has come under fire after an editor revealed generative A.I. was used to enhance the authenticity of the lead performers Hungarian accents. Emily Beecham and David Krumholtz have signed on to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, portraying the parents of Kara Zor-El. Production on the DC Studios film commenced last week. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for “Until Dawn,” the live-action adaptation of the popular 2015 PlayStation horror game. The film is currently set to be released on April 25th. After nearly 15 years of shaping Spider-Man's adventures at Marvel Comics, Eisner Award winner Dan Slott is making the move to DC. The acclaimed writer will make his DC debut on Superman Unlimited, a new monthly series featuring art by American Vampire co-creator Rafael Albuquerque. Westworld star Thandiwe Newton and Silo's Steve Zahn have joined Paul Rudd and Jack Black in Columbia's comedy reboot of Anaconda. Nintendo has revealed its Switch 2 console with first look images and a teaser trailer, confirming a 2025 release. Uma Thurman has joined the cast of Dexter series Dexter: Resurrection and will star alongside Michael C. Hall. Filmmaker David Lynch, who created celebrated counterculture classics like Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and co-created Twin Peaks, has died at 78. A24 and Picturestart are teaming with director Charlie Polinger for a revisionist and darkly comedic take on The Masque of The Red Death, based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe. Sydney Sweeney is currently in negotiations to star. After extensive negotiations, IMAX has secured a deal to exclusively screen Greta Gerwig's Netflix adaptation of "Narnia" in theaters worldwide for two weeks, beginning Thanksgiving 2026, before its streaming debut that Christmas. Joel McHale has joined the cast of Scream 7 and will play Mark Evans, the husband to Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott. A24 has released the first trailer for upcoming horror film Opus, which hits theaters on March 14th. The film stars Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis, and Amber Midthunder.
Matthew and Riki dive deep into Indigenous representation in media, using the 2022 film Prey as a launching point for a broader discussion about the evolution of Native American portrayals in Hollywood. The conversation explores how this Predator franchise entry breaks new ground while honoring both the source material and Indigenous culture. How does Prey set a new standard for Indigenous representation? The hosts discuss the film's groundbreaking achievements, including its predominantly Native cast led by Amber Midthunder, authentic cultural consultation, and the historic creation of a Comanche language dub – a first in movie history. The discussion highlights how producer Jane Myers' involvement as a Comanche and Blackfoot consultant helped ensure cultural authenticity throughout production. What can we learn from revisiting Dances With Wolves (1990)? Riki presents a compelling case for reexamining the film's legacy, arguing that while imperfect, it represented a significant step forward in Native American representation. The hosts explore how the film launched the careers of prominent Native actors like Graham Greene and Wes Studi, while setting new standards for language authenticity and cultural portrayal in mainstream Hollywood. How do these films compare to other attempts at cultural representation? The conversation expands to examine other films like The Last Samurai and Avatar, discussing the complex dynamics of white savior narratives and the importance of authentic cultural consultation in historical dramas.Other topics covered:The evolution of the Predator franchise and how Prey reinvents itThe role of French trappers in the film and their thematic significanceThe importance of authentic language use in Indigenous filmsThe impact of Dances With Wolves on subsequent Native American representation in HollywoodThe complexities of casting Native actors across different tribal affiliationsThe problematic aspects of The Last Samurai and its historical inaccuraciesThe representation of Indigenous peoples in modern media and tourist cultureThe episode concludes by emphasizing the ongoing journey toward better Indigenous representation in media, highlighting both the progress made and the work still needed. While Prey represents a significant step forward, the hosts acknowledge that authentic representation requires continued commitment from the entertainment industry to elevate Indigenous voices both in front of and behind the camera.Use these links to get some of the books and movies we mention on the podcast, while helping us keep the lights on!Comanche Marker Trees of Texas by Jimmy Arterberry, one of the authenticity consultants on PreyPreyDances with WolvesThe Last SamuraiAvatar**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. Joker: Folie a Deux, the long awaited and much discussed follow up to 2019's surprise hit Joker, finally hit theaters last weekend and the numbers across the board, critically and financially, leave something to be desired. The $200 million-budgeted, psychological thriller/musical/courtroom drama sequel debuted to just $37 million domestically, a soft bow certainly impacted by poor critical reviews and a D CinemaScore from audiences – a record worst for the comic book film genre. While promoting his new film We Live In Time via an interview with Esquire, Andrew Garfield spoke on his willingness to reprise his role as The Amazing Spider-Man, saying quote, “For sure, I would 100% come back if it was the right thing, if it's additive to the culture, if there's a great concept or something that hasn't been done before that's unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into. I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I'm joyful in return.” Last week The Hollywood Reporter released an editorial analysis of the state of the Star Wars franchise after being bought by Disney 12 years ago. The report crunched and discussed numbers including budgets, revenues, critical and audience reviews, viewership, and streaming subscriptions, among other verticals for all the projects beginning with The Force Awakens through The Acolyte. The latest buzz from the rumor mill via The Production List, Blue Beetle and Cobra Kai star Xolo Mariduena appears to be attached to Marvel Studios Nova series. While it's still far from official casting, if true, the move could have implications for Jaime Reyes' as-of-yet unclear future in James Gunn's DCU. Spyglass has set the release date for Scream VII as Feb 27, 2026, with Neve Campbell officially reprising her role and franchise creator Kevin Williamson returning as director. Paramount is developing a live-action/CG Rugrats film, directed by Jason Moore of Pitch Perfect, with a script by SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidell. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and creator Rob McElhenney has confirmed that the show will be shooting a crossover episode with the cast of Abbott Elementary, which also takes place in Philadelphia. James Hawes, an established TV creator who most recently directed a string of episodes of the Gary Oldman spy series Slow Horses, has been tapped to helm the first two episodes of Lanterns for Max. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Katy O'Brian, the rising actress who gained notice with Love Lies Bleeding, is joining Glen Powell in The Running Man, Paramount's adaptation of the Stephen King novel Will Smith is set to reunite with director Michael Bay for the first time in 30 years for a new Netflix action movie titled Fast and Loose. The film follows a man who wakes up in Mexico with no memory and discovers he has been living a double life as both a CIA agent and a crime lord. Netflix has canceled the Jeff Goldblum led series Kaos after one season. Prey star Amber Midthunder has joined the second season of AppleTV+'s monsterverse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The Mindy Kaling-led animated Scooby Doo spin off Velma has been canceled by Max after two seasons. Insider Jeff Sneider is adding another name to the list of potential actors to play John Stewart in the upcoming DC series Lanterns, reporting that 21 Bridges actor Stephen James has emerged as the front runner. Christopher Nolan's next film with Universal now has a release date of July 17th, 2026 with Matt Damon in early talks to star.
Hollywood cinema has often featured Native American men in Westerns as brutal, hypermasculine barbarian warriors, and Native American women as hyper-sexualised or a quiet subservient. They'd also often be portrayed by white actors in brownface. How remarkable that a Predator prequel aimed to set this injustice right?Despite not being of Native American descent, director Dan Trachtenberg and writer Patrick Aison knew that they needed to make this movie as authentic as possible to the 1700s in the Great Plains, and not only did they get the advice of the Native communities, they involved them in every aspect of making Prey, and this started with producer Jhane Myers - the VIP of this movie.Myers was instrumental on the authenticity and representation of the Comanche in Prey, as well as ensuring that a variety of roles, both in front and behind the camera, were First Nations people, with Native interns in the crew at all levels, as well as first time Native actors, led by an impeccable lead performance by Amber Midthunder. But the greatest contributions came from community and tribal elders, who advised not only on language and specific tribal culture, including weapons, customs, face painting and regalia. Comanche is classified as a severely endangered world language, which makes it even more incredible that we got a Comanche dub of this movie. It's more important than ever to preserve this language.Prey is as authentic to Comanche tradition as it can be, and it's the best Predator movie by far. Yeah, I said what I said. I would love to hear your thoughts on Prey (2022) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! I won the Best Movie Podcast in the inaugural Ear Worthy Independent Podcast Awards recently.
