The cult sci-fi hit Upgrade won't see a sequel or TV spin-off anytime soon, confirms director Leigh Whannell. The 2018 cyberpunk thriller, starring Logan Marshall-Green, follows a technophobe paralyzed in a tragic accident who regains control of his body with a futuristic chip implant. Praised for its gripping story and tech-infused action, Upgrade scored 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $16 million against a $5 million budget. Despite its ambiguous ending and fans clamoring for more, Whannell prefers leaving it as a "prophetic" standalone gem. Stream Upgrade on Netflix to see why it still sparks sci-fi conversations!

Dorian Price and Mark Radulich present our Prometheus 2012 Movie Review!Prometheus is a 2012 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof. The film features an ensemble cast including Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron. Set in the late 21st century, the film centers on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as it follows a star map discovered among the artifacts of several ancient Earth cultures. Seeking the origins of humanity, the crew arrives on a distant world and discovers a threat that could cause the extinction of the human species.Scott and director James Cameron developed ideas for a film that would serve as a prequel to Scott's science-fiction horror film Alien (1979). In 2002, the development of Alien vs. Predator (2004) took precedence, and the project remained dormant until 2009 when Scott again showed interest. Spaihts wrote a script for a prequel to the events of the Alien films, but Scott opted for a different direction to avoid repeating cues from those films. In late 2010, Lindelof joined the project to rewrite Spaihts's script, and he and Scott developed a story that precedes the story of Alien but is not directly connected to the original series. According to Scott, although the film shares "strands of Alien's DNA," and takes place in the same universe, Prometheus explores its own mythology and ideas.Prometheus entered production in April 2010, with extensive design phases during which the technology and creatures that the film required were developed. Principal photography began in March 2011, with an estimated $120–130 million budget. The film was shot using 3D cameras throughout, almost entirely on practical sets, and on location in England, Iceland, Scotland, Jordan, and Spain. It was promoted with a marketing campaign that included viral activities on the web. Three videos featuring the film's leading actors in character, which expanded on elements of the fictional universe, were released and met with a generally positive reception and awards.Prometheus was released on June 1, 2012, in the United Kingdom and on June 8, 2012, in North America. The film earned generally positive reviews, receiving praise for the designs, production values, and cast performances, but was criticized for its uneven script and unresolved plot points. The film grossed over $403 million worldwide. A sequel, Alien: Covenant, was released in May 2017.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
Send us a textAs we blast off into our 4th Season here at Fabulous Film and Friends, and with the recent release of Alien Romulus, we thought it only fitting to take a look at ALL the Alien movies, minus the execrable Alien v. Predator films, starting with 1979's Alien directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Harry Dean Stanton, Yaphett Koto, John Hurt, Veronica Cartright and Ian Holm followed by 1986's Aliens, directed by James Cameron and starring Sigourney Weaver again, joined by Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, Lance Henrickson, Carrie Ann Henn, William Hope, Jeanette Goldstein, Mark Rolston Al Matthews, and Paul Reiser. Then we get 1992's Alien 3 directed by David Fincer, starring Weaver once again, with Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance, Ralph Brown, Pete Postelwaite, Brian Glover, Holt MccAllany, Lance Henrickson and a veritable slew of bald British day players yelling, "You bloody wanker!" Then there's 1997's Alien Resurrection directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet starring Ms. Weaver, Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman, Dan Hedaya, Brad Dourif, JE Freeman, Kim Flowers Gary Dourdan, Dominique Pinon and Michael Wincott. Then there's a long break in the actual franchise with the aforementioned cash-grabs Alien v. Predator films thrown in the mix and the series starts up again in earnest with 2012's Ridley Scott directed prequel Prometheus starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall Green, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall, and Guy Pierce. In 2017 we're treated to Alien Covenant, once again directed by Ridley Scott starring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Cruddup, Danny McBride, Callie Hernandez, Carmen Ejogo, Guy Pearce, everybody's favorite prankster, Jussie Smollet and blink and you'll miss them cameos by Noomi Rapace and James Franco. Which leads us to 2024's Alien Romulus directed by Fede Alvarez and starring Callie Spaeny, David Jonsson, Isabella Merced, Archie Renaux, Aileen Wu, Spike Fearn and a posthumus Ian Holm. I'm your host Gino Caputi and the guests today are Burton Brown, David Johnson, DMD, Joe Field. With seven movies to cover we're going to get right into it, with one synopsis. Alien movies started off about a crew of space miners serving on the enormous mining vessel the Nostromo who while in cryosleep on their return to Earth with their minerals and ore in tow, are given orders to stop on the planet LV-426 to investigate a distress signal coming from a derelict spacecraft. While investigating the phenomena the crew inadvertently bring an alien on board their vessel. The Alien picks off the crew one by one and it is only warrant officer Ripley who survives by destroying the Nostromo and ultimately shooting the alien out into space. An internet meme sums it up thusly:Alien 1 - A team of miners faces an AlienAliens - A team of marines faces a lot of AliensAlien 3 - A group of convicts faces one AlienAlien Resurrection - A team of pirates face 5 AliensPrometheus - A team of scientists inadvertently create the AlienAlien Covenant - A team of colonists face a a lot of AliensAlien Romulus - A team of babyfaced Gen Z 'ers face a lot of AliensWhich is Queen of the Hive? First up, a kind-of prequel to one of our earliest episodes - Alien - it's Ridley Scott's Prometheus! And, also, there's eventually xenomorphs. Directed by Ridley Scott and co-written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof. Starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron.

Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will breakdown the criminally overlooked UPGRADE (2018), a fantastic modern blend of cyberpunk and cyber-horror! It was written/directed by Leigh Whannell, and stars the amazing and underrated Logan Marshall-Green. I had never seen this movie until a couple of weeks ago, and damn, I was pleasantly surprised and blown away. It was produced by Blumhouse Productions (you know who they are) with a budget of only 3-million, and it looks like a 50-mil production! I notice that it's getting a lot of new buzz on Twitter/X, and I believe Whannell is adapting it into a TV Series next (that would be a perfect medium for this kind of story going forward). You should all check it out. You won't be disappointed!Thank you ALL for your support. I see some great numbers rolling in already, and if you keep coming back, I'll keep producing these episodes! Tell your friends, heck, tell your enemies! The more the merrier.Don't forget to message me at one of the Instagram handles below. I have a huge list of over 200+ cyberpunk titles, but I want to hear from you. I want to know what your favorite cyberpunk film is - you may have suggestions of films I've never heard of, you never know! Upgrade is a 2018 cyberpunk action film written and directed by Leigh Whannell, and starring Logan Marshall-Green, Betty Gabriel, and Harrison Gilbertson. While not a smash hit in 2018 it has gained a following due to its unique cinematography, unsettling score and relevancy to the dangers we face today with the emergence of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence has provided a slew of benefits, but we cannot turn a blind eye to the dangers it presents if checks and balances are not properly established. This week the boys are joined by a special guest and Paul struggles to contain his excitement. "Upgrade," released in 2018 and directed by Leigh Whannell, is a thought-provoking and action-packed science fiction film that explores the convergence of human and artificial intelligence. The story follows Grey Trace, portrayed by Logan Marshall-Green, a technophobe who becomes paralyzed and loses his wife in a brutal attack. In a bid to regain his independence and seek revenge, he agrees to an experimental computer chip implant called STEM. This AI implant not only allows him to walk again but also grants him enhanced physical abilities and remarkable combat skills. As Grey delves deeper into the criminal underworld, the film raises profound questions about the consequences of merging man and machine, with STEM's influence over Grey leading to a suspenseful and thrilling narrative. "Upgrade" is particularly notable for its inventive and stylized action sequences, which are elevated by the choreography that melds human movement with the artificial precision of the AI. The film's exploration of the ethical and philosophical implications of merging humans with technology is a key theme, making it more than just a standard action movie. The plot's many twists and turns, along with a solid performance by Marshall-Green, keep viewers engaged throughout the film. "Upgrade" is a compelling example of how science fiction can explore the evolving relationship between humans and technology while delivering a high-octane, cyberpunk-infused story. No, it's not the The Invitation that came out this year; we're taking it back to 2016, when Karyn Kusama's thoughtful thriller The Invitation was released in theaters. For Halloween, I wanted to give you an evergreen pick that is on my short-list of awesome movies not everyone has seen, Leigh Whannell's Upgrade, starring Logan Marshall-Green. What makes this movie so great is that it's kind of Saw meets a Jackie Chan movie, with everything that comparison entails (brutal twists, comic, inventive action). And if anything, the lighter touch the film has in spots only lulls you into a false sense of security about the ending to come. This is a great movie to watch during the Halloween season, and if you haven't seen it yet, I'm jealous you get to see it for the first time. Let me know your thoughts on Upgrade at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram). And please leave a 5-star rating on the show, if you're enjoying it.

Of all the actors to get a John Wick-ian action vehicle, Allison Janney might just be the last one on your list. And yet, here we are with Anna Foerster's Lou, the straight-to-Netflix action thriller starring the West Wing legend, now transformed into a former CIA fixer who's given up the life for an isolated existence on a remote coastal island. But her skills are needed once more when her neighbor (Jurnee Smollett) comes to her in the middle of a rainstorm for help: Her daughter's been kidnapped, and her dangerous ex-husband (Logan Marshall-Green) is the culprit. Together, the two must track them through the mud-soaked forest, Lou calling on her particular set of skills to do one last bit of good. It's a dark, grimy, psychologically complex thriller, with its crackling corners illuminated by Nima Fakhrara's richly textured score. The Iranian-born composer has worked on everything from video games like Detroit: Become Human to ad campaigns for Balenciaga. His work is characterized by his incredible use of synths and staggered, rhythmic vocals. His score for 2019's Becky, another action thriller involving a transformed character actor (Kevin James), is a muscular, primal scream of a score. Lou follows in a quieter permutation of that tradition. Clacking percussion, halting vocals, and tape-scratch elements from 1980s cassette recordings all culminate in a haunting sound that feels like the lost memories of an aging warrior. And today, we've got Nima Fakhrara on the podcast to talk about his musical history, his experiences on Lou, and the innovative techniques he used to bring the score to life. (We'll also hear a few exclusive track commentaries from the score.) You can find Nima Fakhrara at his official website here. Lou is currently streaming on Netflix You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Netflix Music.

As my work involves sitting at a computer for long stretches and watching films requires even more screen time, what I don't really need in my life is yet another sedentary activity which is a shame because I really enjoy playing video games. This week we celebrate entertainments biggest industry, though you wouldn't know it given how little attention is devoted to video gaming in popular media. And you wouldn't really know it when you listen to us either as we try to avoid any computer game references in our Top 5 Games section. Leigh Whannell is probably best known as the writer of SAW and the INSIDIOUS movies but in 2018 directed the furious and inventive Australian cyberpunk thriller UPGRADE based on his own screenplay. Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) is a retro man living in a near futuristic world who restores old cars for creepy reclusive tech billionaires. When a brutal accident and robbery attempt results in his wife being killed and renders Grey paralysed from the neck down, experimental surgery to implant a tiny microchip called STEM in him might just start to give Grey his body back. Like a slice of 80's or early 90's Verhoeven, full of inventive world building, the script crackles and amuses and cinematographer Stefan Duscio makes virtually every scene dazzle through great lighting and unusual camera angles but it's the physical performance from Logan Marshall-Green as an at-times passenger in his own body which astonishes. Judicious use of an innovative visual effect that sees the camera housed in a gyroscopic mounting which then tracks a phone stored on the actors body gives the action scenes a strong and unique visual style and the massive downer ending only strengthened our love for this ambitious sci-fi action revenge flick. Give yourself an upgrade and watch this! We round out video game week with a look at iconic anthropomorphic hedgehog Sonic in the animated series SONIC BOOM. Based on a recommendation from my youngest we watched the season 1 finale "It Takes a Village To Defeat a Hedgehog" which introduces the second most popular character in the canon, Shadow. Doctor Eggman calls together a complete rogues gallery including Dave the Intern, T.W. Barker and his two circus bears, the Lightning Bolt Society, and Charlie the mad archaeologist to talk about how they might bring down the spiny mammal which involves ambushing Sonic and his friends as they attempt to build their latest IKEA purchase. In the end the furry blue speedster needs a cheap shot while his rival is distracted in order to momentarily defeat his nemesis, the cheating little tw*t. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads
This week on black Black Girl Film Club, we do a deep dive into the dystopian near future of Upgrade (2018), a cyperpunk revenge tale directed by Leigh Whannell and starring Logan Marshall Green, Betty Gabriel, Harrison Gilbertson, and Melanie Vallejo. In this episode, we try to understand what it would be like to live in the kind of world where police drones and implanted identification codes are commonplace, body mods are reserved for the military, and disability seems to be nonexistent (or readily "curable"). What kinds of tech does the movie think we should we be afraid of and is this world worth saving? Our recommendations: 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Prometheus (2012), Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Masterpiece Society (S5E13). Dynamic duo Matt and Michael join Caitlin to talk about another dinner party gone awry. This time, we're looking at 2015's The Invitation. We look at themes of grief, cults, and social contracts regarding politeness. We shared stories about times we felt uncomfortable breaking the "politeness contract," including Michael's experience in a haunted forest, and Matt and Caitlin's [subjectively] near-death experience on a mountain in Chile.
