Though we may remember French Stewart as the lovable, hilarious, and “squinty” alien Harry Solomon on the hit sitcom “3rd Rock from the Sun,” or the smarmy Chef Rudy on “Mom,” comedy is not the only thing he can do. French joins me to talk about his new movie, “Bob Trevino Likes It” (in theaters now) in which he plays a truly horrible father to a daughter who just wants his love. He shares how hard it was being a good dad in real life and playing a horrific one on screen and what it was like being on one of the highest-rated TV shows of the 90s. Send us a Text Message. On this episode of Fabulous Film and Friends we are looking back at two middling, lackluster sci-fi adventures from 1994 that have mysteriously stood the test of time: Stargate, directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Kurt Russell, James Spader, John Diehl, Jaye Davidson, Viveca Lindfors, Erick Avari, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, Leon Rippey, French Stewart, and Djimon Hounsou, which was released in October of ‘94 then Star Trek: Generations which was released a month later, was directed by David Carson and starred Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Levar Burton, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFaddon, Malcolm McDowell, Walter Koenig, James Doohan and William Shatner. I'm Gino Caputi your host, and back for more, especially if Star Trek is to be discussed I have series regular and IT tech Burton Brown, and representing the fresh eyes of the younger, non-cynical generation, author hypnotherapist Joe Field. The synopses: In Stargate, a crack squad of US Special Forces led by Colonel Jack O'Neill with an assist from archeologist Dr. Daniel Jackson travel through a mysterious circular dimensional portal that was discovered in Giza Egypt in 1928 and kept a secret by the military until the mysteries of the portal could be unlocked. Once on the other side, Jackson and O'Neil discover they are on the planet Abydos with a culture very similar to ancient Egypt. There they befriend the locals and do battle with the god Ra, revealed to be an alien who has enslaved humans on this planet and is intent on destroying the human race on Earth through the Stargate. In Star Trek Generations a single-minded, pleasure-seeking and murderous Dr. Tholian Soran attempts to destroy an entire solar system in order to get back into a heaven-like, temporal portal in the universe called The Nexus. It is up to the crew of the Starship Enterprise D, led by Captain Jean Luc Picard to stop Soran. Unfortunately, Picard proves to be too weak for the task and finds his ship and crew destroyed, the mission failed and he himself is trapped in the Nexus. Except…Captain James T. Kirk is also in the Nexus having landed in it 78 years earlier the Enterprise B encountered The Nexus on a rescue mission. Picard and Kirk join forces, leave the Nexus and stop Soran through the power of team work. San Francisco Chronicle Film Critic Mick LaSalle, when summarizing the 1994 Year in Film wrote, “In 20 years will anyone still be watching Stargate? Or Star Trek Generations?” I agreed with him wholeheartedly that these films were nothing but forgettable, but here we 30 years later and are still watching these works. Add to that, Stargate has had five spinoff TV series on the subject and they're still planning cinematic reboots. Star Trek Generations was listed implausibly as a one of the great epics in the 2004 book Epic movies and will forever be remembered as the film that killed off Captain Kirk. So, the burning question is WHY have these films endured? Find out! This week Sam brings Danielle the 2003 direct to VHS film Inspector Gadget 2. If you fondly recall the original 1999 film starring Matthew Broderick, or even the Inspector Gadget cartoon, then you're leagues ahead of Sam and Danielle who only have the vaguest notion of what happened in that first film. Will that stop them from speculating wildly using only the sequel as reference? Absolutely not! So it's time for a new film and and a new Gadget played by French Stewart. He's apparently made Riverton so crime free after locking up Claw that he's bored out of his mind and arresting anyone for the most minor infractions. Things don't stay tranquil for long as Claw escapes from prison and prepares for a major heist: Steal all the gold from the Federal Reserve Bank which has recently relocated to Riverton for...reasons. But to complete this first heist, he needs to complete three smaller heists to steal materials to make a super-weapon. Sam hates this plan. Meanwhile, Gadget is eager to go after Claw, but is taken off the case by the chief who hates him because he's constantly glitching and, even though the police made him, they refuse to fix his glitches since he's just a "prototype"; just amazingly cruel. Anyway, he's replaced with the fully robotic (and unnecessarily sexy) Gadget 2. While Gadget accepts this, his niece Penny (parents' status: unknown) pushes him to investigate anyway. Meanwhile, despite Claw stating that he had all his assets seized when he was arrested, he manages to put together some amazingly complex bowling-pin themed gizmos to accomplish his heists. Why is he suddenly a bowling-pin themed villain? That's an extremely good question! So join us to see if Claw will succeed in his insane plan, if Gadget will redeem himself, and especially if Gadget will find a way to either have sex with the new Gadget or accidentally inspire her to start the robot apocalypse.

"Mom" is an sitcom that premiered on CBS and had an eight season run from 2013-2021. The show stars Anna Faris as Christy, a single mother who is a recovering alcoholic and a waitress. Another series from the mind of creator Chuck Lorre, but "Mom" drew a lot of its inspiration from co-creator Gemma Baker's experiences growing up with a mother in addiction recovery. As result the show tackles themes that aren't often explored through the eyes of the main character. The show received positive reviews from critics throughout its run for its handling of sensitive topics while still being able to find a nice balance and keep the tone of the show generally fun and entertaining. The show garnered several award nominations and wins, including multiple Primetime Emmy Awards and Critics' Choice Television Awards. But can "Mom" find a way to win over the S1E1 boys while tackling heavy issues in its pilot? Listen as they deep dive the shows first episode. Our exit today finds us in the mind of Full House creator Jeff Franklin and his directorial debut Love Stinks, starring French Stewart and Bridgette Wilson-Sampras. Along the way, Tripp struggles to find a word other than "baffling" to describe the film, but is driven to tangents about A Light in the Piazza and a very long list he complied in his notes while Ross tries to rewrite the ending of the film with inspiration from a surprising place. Six dads share an instant messenger thread to share advice, tears, and dirty jokes as they help each other navigate the joyful insanity of fatherhood. One very, very late night, in a state of panic, a new dad reaches out to five of his buddies via instant messenger to ask for advice on being a father. What results is a nonstop stream of consciousness as the Daddy Drinks daddies overshare, gripe, grouse, complain, and offer questionable guidance to one another on how to keep their kids alive and their marriages intact. Daddy Drinks is the real transcript lifted from that messenger thread that shines a comedic light on the idea that almost any man can be a father--but almost no father knows what the hell he's doing Daddy Drinks is a celebration of the ups and downs of raising a new baby--not just the fatigue and worry--but also the immense joys of newfound fatherhood.
