Putting kids on social media -- is it social behavior or exploitative BS? Well it depends. And I brought in two of my favorite fellow podcasters and parent coaches to talk all about it. I welcome Casey O'Roarty and Amy Lang back to The Heartful Parent Podcast today to talk about the #Kidfluencers movement and all the things that are wrong with this use of social media to exploit children. This conversation is based on our joint outrage after reading the NY Times article “A Marketplace of Girl Influencers Managed by Moms and Stalked by Men.” And we're talking about it today to help you navigate the right kind of conversations with your kid, tween, or teen around what is acceptable and “normal” on social media. We are reminding you how to stay curious and teach your kids to think critically about the “water they are swimming in.” We also dig into where the “line” is and Casey even wonders if she's crossed it in some of the work she's done that has included sharing her kids' struggles. Catch more with Casey and Amy on their podcasts: Joyful Courage Podcast and Birds+Bees+Kids. In order to put a stop to this type of exploitation and child sexual abuse, talk about this topic with people you know. Better yet, pass this episode along to get more people talking! I'm sitting down with sexuality educator and parenting expert Amy Lang for a very frank and open conversation* about sex ed for children—what they need to know, when they need to know it, how to talk about it, and much much more. She explains why as our children's parents and caregivers, it is up to us to initiate and continue to have conversations surrounding sexuality.Amy Lang is committed to changing and challenging cultural beliefs about children and sexuality. She does this by teaching adults the best and most effective ways to talk, learn, and think about the birds and bees, and provides research-based, high quality keynotes, workshops, webinars, books, and other tools so adults can be true champions for the kids they care for and love. As a speaker, you’re only one-half of the equation. The other half is your audience. Particularly when you’re doing workshops and breakout sessions with smaller groups, you want to make sure that the audience is engaged, interested, and learning. My guest Amy Lang is an experienced speaker and workshop facilitator and she shares with us strategies she uses, from stories and humor to flipcharts and breathing breaks, to engage adult learners. We also talk about how to manage introverted and extroverted workshop participants, how Amy got her first speaking gigs when she was starting her business, and our mutual love for alliteration and acronyms. This is a very lively conversation that I know you’ll enjoy!
