Content warning: gender-based violence, abuse, domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and rape. Alison Jones-Lockwood is a mother and victim advocate in Colorado. Her career in aiding survivors began years ago while she was in college, and continues to this day. Although her journey recently pivoted when she became Executive Director of the Rape Crisis Center for Northern Colorado, at the time of our recording she worked with EVAWI or End Violence Against Women International. The Broken Cycle Media team is grateful Alison was able to offer such a broad perspective of the advocacy arena, as well as a detailed account of what's coming next for EVAWI, as the organization works to change the criminal justice and legal landscapes for victims. Although the importance of advocacy work is always relevant, this conversation is especially timely considering October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In Doug Pratt's sermon, "Scars Can Be Beautiful," he emphasizes that life's wounds and hardships can lead to growth and transformation. He uses two biblical stories to illustrate this point: Job from the Old Testament, who suffers immense loss and pain yet remains faithful and is ultimately restored by God, and Peter from the New Testament, who denies Jesus but is later forgiven and transformed into a stronger leader. Pratt also shares modern examples like Elizabeth Smart and Rachael Denhollander, who endured great suffering but became stronger and more resilient through faith and courage. He encourages listeners to see their own wounds—whether from illness, grief, or mistakes—as opportunities for growth. By trusting in God's healing power and finding support in their community, these scars can become sources of beauty and strength, reminding us that earthly pain is temporary and will be fully healed in eternity.

Herself a victim of the disgraced Nassar, Denhollander went on to become a lawyer and advocate for abuse and trauma survivors after his conviction, was named one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time Magazine, and received Sports Illustrated's "Inspiration of the Year Award." Strickland is a well known lecturer and counselor for CCEF, is on faculty at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, and has been featured as a speaker for abuse and trauma seminars around the world.  Denhollander and Strickland will discuss making church a safe place for survivors of abuse at the seminar, in addition to discussing their books (Denhollander's “What Is a Girl Worth?,” "What Is a Little Girl Worth?," and "What Is a Little Boy Worth?" can be found here, and Strickland's “Is It Abuse?: A Biblical Guide to Identifying Domestic Abuse and Helping Victims” can be found here). Rachael Denhollander is horrified by the information inside the monumental third-party investigative report into sexual abuse in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). But she's not surprised. “The most sobering part,” Denhollander tells CT public theologian Russell Moore, “is that we should have known, and in many cases, we did know and did nothing.” The first woman to pursue criminal charges and speak publicly against USA Gymnastics' team doctor Larry Nassar, Denhollander is an internationally recognized voice on the topic of sexual abuse. As an attorney, author, advocate, and educator, she speaks with gravity and clarity about the crisis of sexual abuse in the SBC and the extreme abuses of power that allowed it. “The fact that I can define evil means there is goodness.” Rachael Denhollander  Denise talks to Rachael Denhollander, attorney and the former gymnast who was the first woman to publicly accuse Larry Nassar, the former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics' team doctor, of sexual assault. As a result of her activism over 300 women—including numerous Olympic medalists—came forward as survivors of Nassar's abuse, eventually leading to his life imprisonment. Rachael is most proud that by coming forward she's been able to positively impact so many others.  In this important conversation Rachael sheds light on the grieving process for sexual abuse survivors, and how she learned to effectively communicate and verbalize her emotions. A tireless advocate, she aims to help both survivors and those to whom misconduct is reported.  Rachael and Denise touch on these crucial questions:  —How do we listen and respond, especially to children?  —What does trauma look like?  —What should we NOT say to someone who reports abuse?  —Why are we not more disturbed by sexual misconduct and how can we stop it?  —How does the neurobiological response effect victims of sexual assault?   Rachael recounts a moving story of the day her two-year old daughter accompanied her to the Glamour Magazine photo shoot. Her deeply held faith has given her hope and the courage to pay the price of doing what is right to help people, whose worth far exceeds the sacrifice.  ***  Born in Kalamazoo Michigan, Rachael Joy Denhollander is an attorney, author, advocate, and educator recognized as a leading voice on the topic of sexual abuse.  A sought-after speaker, advisor and consultant, Rachael has received numerous awards and was included in TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2018. In this episode, Kate and Rachael talk about how love must be the motivation behind justice and how our worth cannot be taken away, no matter what happens to us.CW: Sexual abuse and assaultFor show notes, the transcript, and discussion questions: https://katebowler.com/podcasts/rachael-denhollander-the-pursuit-of-justice/ To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Give a Worldview Book This Christmas

It's a little late to still be doing Christmas shopping (like I am), especially for anything that needs to be shipped. Even so, books that pass on Christian worldview are worth the hassle, and I've got four to recommend for you this Christmas. In fact, you might want to self-gift some of these… The first is the best book I know of that teaches the “how” of communication in a tough culture: “Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions” by my friend Greg Koukl. Every Christian needs this book because every Christian, in this day and age, will find themselves in conversations about controversial topic, called upon to defend their beliefs, and even Christianity itself. “Tactics” teaches, well, tactics. In other words, this book gives you the rhetorical strategies you need to speak up in such a way as to generate light, not heat. If you're thinking, “Wait, hasn't that book been out for a while?” Yes, it has. Ten years, in fact. And now, it's been expanded and re-released in a 10th- anniversary edition. This edition not only has updated stories of Greg's tactics in action (which are very helpful), it has more tactics. Honestly, I didn't think this book could really be improved, but Greg has. He and I discussed the book on the BreakPoint podcast at BreakPoint.org. As I told Greg, the book should come with a warning: Anyone who reads it no longer has an excuse for not sharing their beliefs and convictions, even on the tough topics. The second book is for children, especially for little girls: Rachael Denhollander's “How Much Is a Little Girl Worth?” Denhollander, as you might remember, is the force of nature that bravely and persistently worked to expose the hundreds of cases of abuse by U.S.A. Gymnastics doctor Larry Nasser. Rachael Denhollander understands that in a culture that victimizes little girls in so many ways, they need to know who they are, as made in the image of God. Her beautifully written and illustrated book teaches that their worth is beyond price, and that they can meet any challenges they will face with God's help. It's an especially important gift for the little 4- to 8-year old girl in your life, but I bought it for my daughters, who are older. My third recommendation is a bit self-serving...  “A Practical Guide to Culture: Helping the Next Generation Navigate Today's World,” which I co-authored with Brett Kunkle, is an ideal resource for parents, grandparents, teachers, and youth pastors who are in the cultural deep end with their kids. The book unpacks the major issues in our culture, from the obvious ones like LGBT issues, social media, drugs, and smartphones, to the unseen undercurrents in our culture that parents often miss, such as identity struggles and the overwhelming amount of information students face today. The best part is that “A Practical Guide to Culture” is exactly that: practical. In fact, it's proven especially helpful for grandparents, believe it or not. There's always been a generation gap, but many sense that the gap is more vast today – especially when it comes to technology, sexuality, and politics. We hear consistently from parents and grandparents that “A Practical Guide” has helped them make sense of the culture their kids face, so that they can connect with the students in their life and help them to navigate the tricky cultural waters. And speaking of students and culture, I'm pleased to announce that on January 1, a student edition of “A Practical Guide to Culture, called A Student's Guide to Culture,” will be released.  This book is written directly for junior high and high school students, and covers the same crucial issues in our culture from a Christian worldview. It's not yet released but is available for pre-order. Why not give a great book this Christmas? You can find these books at our online bookstore. Whenever you purchase books at our online store, it benefits the ministry of the Colson Center.

Women You Should Know About

Last week in Reykjavik, Iceland, The Women Leaders Global Forum gathered to recognize and celebrate women making a positive difference in the world. The “Trailblazer Award” honored women who've won high political office. Others were recognized for their work in easing various stigmas and discrimination women face around the world. There was even a category for female Nobel Prize Laureates—an award on top of an award, if you will.          While I am happy to say congratulations to them all, I couldn't help but think of the amazing women who are at least as worthy of recognition yet are never mentioned at any of these secular events.          The women I am thinking of have at least one thing in common: In their various causes and through very different work, they speak up for those who, in our culture, have no voice: the unborn, those with disabilities, or victims of the sexual revolution. In doing so, they stand courageously against powerful cultural norms. If they worked on behalf of culturally acceptable causes, their names would be celebrated with the others.          Obianuju Ekeocha, or “Uju” as her friends call her, is the founder and president of Culture of Life Africa. A Nigeria-born biomedical scientist, she's devoted her life to promoting the sanctity of life, the beauty of marriage, and the blessing of family in Africa.          In fact, Uju is one of the main leaders of the pro-life movement on that continent. Her bold declarations in defense of the unborn and against progressive sexual ethics is confronting what she calls Western ideological imperialism. By the way, Uju will be speaking at our 2020 Wilberforce Weekend this May, and trust me, you won't want to miss it.          Another heroine to know: Rachael Denhollander. This gymnast-turned lawyer brought down USA Gymnastics doctor and serial abuser Larry Nassar. In doing so, she enabled hundreds of his victims to have a voice, and is now spending her time as a wife, a mother and a crusader for the dignity of women and girls, especially calling the church to take sexual abuse seriously. We recently interviewed her on the BreakPoint Podcast.          Then there's Lila Rose, president and founder of Live Action. Lila is one of the most influential voices in the modern pro-life movement, and the unquestioned media leader. From her undercover work exposing Planned Parenthood to her defense of the pro-life cause in mainstream media, she's a powerhouse—and proof that the pro-life movement is, in many ways, being led by a younger generation.          There's Katy Faust, an author, a children's-rights activist, and founder of the organization Them Before Us. She's challenging one of the foulest lies of the sexual revolution: that the desires of adults trump the rights of children, especially their right to have a mom and dad. In one of our recent “What Would You Say?” videos, she debunks the popular but poisonous idea that love is the only thing required to make a family. She'll also be at our next Wilberforce Weekend.          Making the same case at the scholarly level is Helen Alvare, associate professor of law at George Mason University and a champion of life and the family in the legal sphere. She's one of the intellectual heavy-hitters of our time—including in amicus briefs to the Supreme Court—that marriage is worth preserving, children deserve parents, and unborn life is worth protecting.          I feel like the author of Hebrews here. I'm running out of time to talk about Reggie Littlejohn, founder and president of Women's Rights Without Frontiers, and the world's leading opponent of sex-selective and forced abortion in China. And of course, Emily Colson and Joni Eareckson-Tada, who have dedicated their lives to honoring the dignity of those with disabilities, especially in recent years, leading battle against selective abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia. Through books and speaking they've made the case, like few else can, that a society that welcomes the vulnerable is a beautiful place worth living in.          These women are forces of restoration. Not only do they deserve recognition for the incredible work they do. They deserve recognition because the causes they represent and the groups for whom they speak aren't popular in this culture. God bless these worthy women. If I were on an award committee, they'd have my vote.

Today on the BreakPoint Podcast, Rachael Denhollander speaks with Warren Cole Smith about her new book, “What Is a Girl Worth?: My Story of Breaking the Silence and Exposing the Truth about Larry Nassar and USA Gymnastics.” Rachael recounts the enormous obstacles that she and abuse survivors face when they try to expose the truth: in Rachel's case, stonewalling and outright opposition from powerful institutions—Michigan State University, USA Gymnastics, law enforcement, and even her own church. She also talks about how institutions can—and how some have—taken responsibility to expose abuse and to begin the process of healing for victims.   Resources What Is a Girl Worth?: My Story of Breaking the Silence and Exposing the Truth about Larry Nassar and USA Gymnastics Rachael Denhollander, Tyndale Momentum, 2019   Receive your copy of "Free to Believe: The Battle Over Religious Liberty in America" with your next gift to BreakPoint and the Colson Center.
