These traits make them incredible athletes but can also be challenging to parent.[00:02:09] Meet Mary Van Geffen. Mary is an international parenting coach who helps moms of spicy ones cultivate warmth, tenderness, and self-compassion. Her mission is to help parents thrive while raising these fiery future leaders.[00:05:26] Traits of a Spicy One. Spicy ones are intense, fiercely independent, and often resist feedback or authority. They're not afraid to take up space, which makes them great athletes but also challenging to parent.[00:11:09] Understanding Adolescent Brains. Teens experience adult-sized emotions without the rational thinking to match, which can lead to big ups and downs. Their brains are still under construction, so patience is key.[00:18:47] The Power of the Pause. Mary's top tip: pause before reacting to your child's behavior. Taking a moment to breathe helps you respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.[00:24:37] Balancing Independence and Respect. Encourage your spicy athlete's independence while teaching them to respect authority figures like coaches and referees. It's a delicate but important balance.[00:30:50] Mary's Best Advice for Parents. Mary's top advice: “Other people can teach them life skills, but your main job is to delight in them.” Your unconditional love is what they need most.[00:34:58] Closing Thoughts. She has over 10,000 hours of experience in education, both in the classroom and corporate sector. Even though she holds a Master's degree in education, she struggled to understand her neurodivergent and oppositional kids.  Inspired by her experience using Myers Briggs and the Enneagram with business teams, she spent over a decade researching temperament pattens to help family teams. She is a best-selling author and host of the Not So Normal Parenting podcast.   Her podcast is entitled Not So Normal Parenting because not only are she and her kids neurodivergent but some of her life experiences, such as driving off a cliff her wedding night and going viral for embarrassing her seventeen-year old son by dancing on a snowy and jammed interstate, fall into that category. In addition to being talked about by Hoda Kotb, the BackStreet Boys, and Princess Kate, even U2 singer Bono mentioned the incident in his autobiography.   Because Wendy herself has struggled as a helicopter parent, a cranky parent and an embarrassing parent, she wants to help other parents struggle……..a little bit less!

Raising a strong-willed girl can feel like an intricate dance of guidance and patience. These girls, with their determination and fiery spirits, are often destined for great things, but parenting them can be both a blessing and a challenge. In this episode of the Raising Godly Girls Podcast, co-hosts Rachael Culpepper and Melissa Bearden unpack the beauty of nurturing a strong will while providing the Biblical perspective necessary to shape it for God's glory.  Drawing inspiration from American Heritage Girls' Founder & Executive Director, Patti Garibay, we'll explore how to embrace those “I can do it myself!” moments as opportunities to teach trust, patience, and life skills. You'll hear practical tips for celebrating your daughter's unique strengths while gently guiding her toward Christ-like humility, gentleness, and cooperation.  With wisdom rooted in Scripture, we'll reflect on verses like Romans 12:6, which reminds us of the beauty of individual gifts, and Colossians 3:21, a call to parent with love and encouragement rather than discouragement. Learn how to redirect your daughter's passion and leadership qualities to serve others and glorify God, whether through small conversations at home or broader involvement in environments like AHG Troops that foster leadership and belonging.  If parenting a strong-willed girl has you seeking strength and encouragement, this episode offers hope, guidance, and actionable advice to navigate the challenges while nurturing the heart of a future Kingdom warrior. Remember: her determination, when cultivated in the right way, can be a gift to her, to you, to God, and to the world.  Don't miss this empowering conversation that will equip you to raise a strong-willed daughter who is not only fearless but faithful.   Find an American Heritage Girls Troop near you, visit americanheritagegirls.org     Add even more Biblical wisdom to your parenting quiver, visit raisinggodlygirls.com

In today's solo minisode I'm talking all about strong-willed kids. I've been talking a lot about this in my emails and on my social media lately because I know it's a topic that many parents struggle with. Strong-willed kids are the ones that I like to call fair fighters - they're always keeping score and want to make sure everything is right in their world. But this can cause them to easily spiral out of control the second things don't go their way. I want to share three key points that come up over and over again in one-on-one and group coaching in regards to strong willed kids.If this episode resonates with you, consider signing up for my group coaching program all about raising strong willed kids and emotional regulation for kids and parents starting November 21! The link to register is in the Resources. Does Your Kid Value Approval or Power? We set up an expectation and kids usually comply.Strong-willed kids don't seek or value approval from authority or parents. It's not important enough for them.Instead they value power but they don't have the capacity to hold all of it. They try to find out how much power they can have until they start to lose control.Strong-willed kids will then look for an anchor to keep them in a safe state when they start to lose control.Explanations Don't Work We try to give kids the tools and the choices to understand why things are happening. Explanations don't deter a strong-willed kid from their actions. An explanation gives information but they are not lacking information. It may be a bigger issue of impulse control, tolerating frustration, sensory overload, or something else.If there is a lack of information, the next time they face something similar the outcome will be different. Get to the root of what skills they need to develop to reduce the behavior you don't want to see. Self Regulate YourselfIt's incredibly triggering for parents when a strong-willed kid is emotionally out of control. It's important for the parent to self regulate themselves when the child is unable to.They are looking for someone to be calm in the storm. We have to create a really consistent, predictable structure through boundaries. This structuring takes time and will take a while to set the expectations and make changes where needed. Teaching them how to regulate their emotions is an important step to help your child foster their inner free spirit and communicate their needs and emotions.Resources: Sign up for my Group Coaching Program starting November 21: stan.store/theparentingreframe/p/group-coaching-raising-strong-willed-kids-51n42Joe Newman podcast episode: https://theparentingreframe.com/podcast-episodes/episode-49-a-raising-lions-q-a-with-joe-newman/ Sign up for a FREE 20 minute discovery call: https://stan.store/theparentingreframe/p/free-discovery-call-ck6qfBe sure to sign up for my Substack newsletter for longer and more specialized parenting content: https://albiona.substack.com/ I hope you found this episode helpful; for more parenting tips, check out my website and blog for more information. https://theparentingreframe.com/Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theparentingreframe/Follow me on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@theparentingreframe

Have you been told you need to break, harness, control, nip in the bud, or any other such phrase in regard to your child's will and you're feeling the pressure to conform? We have some godly encouragement for you instead today on this episode about how Strong Will Does Not Equal Defiance. Strong will is another way of labeling the determination, drive, and spirit that does not give up easily. How the strong will is applied is what makes the difference. Is the will coming from a place of rebellion against God and what He wants or rebellion against cultural pressures and sin?Philippians 2:3-4 Pray that God will help them to SURRENDER their will to HimRomans 6:13 (NIV) - Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. Correction and not condemnation, especially in the words we speak over them.Do not want to speak bondage, death and destruction over their wills and lives but instead speak freedom, life, and build them up. Not interested in teaching a child to CONTROL their own will because they are incapable of doing so in their own strength. Commit instead to leading your children through discipline and discipleship to SURRENDER their will to the Lord who loves them most. They have a Savior who loves them and has a better way for them than anything they could ever manipulate or try to control on their own. We should seek to humbly discipline and disciple our children in a way that honors God because He has lovingly entrusted us to shepherd them!Ephesians 6:1 Their sin is more obvious - this is a plus Be calm, clear, and CONSISTENT, do what you say you will do, and help them understand their personal responsibility in the choices they make with their will. Correction and not condemnation Galatians 6:9 Let's not become discouraged in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not become weary. We want to raise children that are not conformed to the things of this world but transformed for mighty kingdom work and they will NEED strong wills for these battles! On this week's episode of the Thrive Like a Parent podcast, I dive into the challenges and rewards of raising strong-willed children, especially when it comes to their sensory and emotional regulation. Storing willed kiddos often struggle with societal expectations, like sitting still or staying organized, because they're trying to navigate their own unique needs.   I want to reassure you that while raising strong-willed children can be exhausting and sometimes overwhelming, it's so important to trust your parenting instincts. Understanding the root of their behavior—whether it's driven by sensory needs or emotional intensity—can make a big difference in guiding them effectively. I promise you can support your strong-willed child while still maintaining your own sanity.   I keep it real, the tough moments and the frustration that can come with them is 10000% there. But I also want to offer you hope and encouragement, reminding you that these traits often point to brilliance and resilience in your child. The key is finding the right balance between supporting their development and creating a harmonious household where everyone thrives.   #ParentingTips #StrongWilledChild #ThriveLikeAParent #ParentingChallenges #RaisingKids #ChildDevelopment #ParentingAdvice #MindfulParenting #SensoryAwareness #EmotionalRegulation #MomLife #ParentingPodcast

How to De-escalate Situations with Strong Willed Kids When They're Upset with Kirk Martin of Celebrate Calm

On this episode of The Fresh Start Family Show, Wendy chats with the funny and insightful Kirk Martin, founder of Celebrate Calm and host of the Calm Parenting podcast.  They explore 3 tools we can use to help de-escalate situations with our strong-willed kids when they're upset that are effective and actually create closeness when parenting a strong-willed kiddo: Self-Regulation: We must control our own emotions first before we address the child. The quickest way to change your child's behavior is to first control your own. Movement: Motion changes emotion. Sometimes talking makes kids more upset. Use movement to help calm an upset child. Connection: Relationships change behavior. Staying connected, especially during discipline creates trust & safety, which kids NEED in order to learn effective self-regulation.  Strong-willed kids are incredible, AND they can often be misunderstood. This episode gives us a fresh and empowered perspective on these kiddos and how to support their big feelings. I love Kirk's realistic approach to parenting. He understands what your home dynamics are like. And gives practical tips. After listening to today's episode you will have at least three different “tricks” to apply. Most of all, I'm thankful for the new perspective he has given me. Kirk helped me recognize how emotionally invested I was in my boys' behavior and freed me from the need to regulate their behavior for them. The last couple days I've enjoyed the boys more. I'm also less tense and frustrated when we are out in public. In fact, I may need to go back and listen to this episode more than once, so it sticks! This episode originally aired in May of 2015 Kirk came back on the show multiple times. Check out additional episodes here. What we chat about: Kirk's realization that he needed to focus on his own behavior and stop trying to fix his son's strong-willed behavior. The switch he made from training 1500 kids in his home to training parents to calm themselves. The one thing you can do today to de-escalate a tense situation in your home. How to calmly handle your child's meltdown I can only control one person in life, and that's me. How motion changes emotion–helping little ones calm down b/c they don't know how to “think” their way out. What to do in the middle of Target aisle 3 when your child freaks out Handling a tantruming child when his siblings are fighting and another needs help with homework and dinner is cooking (Heather's daily 5 pm reality). If you don't care enough about yourself, to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, spiritually. . .why would anyone else care? How sometimes parents want good behavior so badly, they are too invested in it and give children too much control. How to be an impartial giver of wisdom. Write down your emotional triggers & do the opposite of what you normally do. If you struggle to stay calm when your kids are out of control, what are some of your triggers?  Which of Kirk's ideas to de-escalate a situation is most realistic for you? Thinking about how motion changes emotion. How did you react to Kirk's idea of being an “impartial giver of wisdom” instead of being so invested in how your kids behave?  Spend some time working through a part of your day that is most challenging or a situation with a particular child and brainstorm ways you could respond differently.
