Welcome back to the basics! Kathi Lipp is joined by Roger, her husband and fellow declutterer, and they are here to recap some of the best tips they have discovered about decluttering. How do you declutter quickly? Kathi has an easy to follow decluttering system for you and it only takes 15 minutes. Step 1 - Gather your tools. Kathi likes to use 3 tote bags. One bag is "give away," one bag is "put away," and one bag is "other rooms." The 2 additional bags Kathi adds to the mix are a garbage bag and a recycling bag. Step 2 - Pick a small area. This could be a desk, drawer, or shelf. Make sure it is something so small, you don't have to move your feet for the 15 minutes you are decluttering. This will also limit the number of decisions you have to make and avoid B.S.O. (Bright Shiny Object Syndrome). More decluttering tips from Kathi and Roger: Listen to something dedicated to your declutter time. Kathi listens to the Scientology: Fair Game podcast from Leah Remini. Body Doubling - Make yourself accountable by telling someone you will be decluttering. Or have someone in the room with you - this is also known as body doubling. It helps to have someone there to help you focus and accomplish your goals. Join Kathi's Clutter Free Academy group on Facebook for some online accountability with a community who understands! Break big projects into smaller goals. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed. Find doable steps such as spending 15 minutes a day to declutter. After each 15 minute decluttering session, set your timer for another 5 minutes to take care of the items you have sorted into different bags or boxes. Remember that when you declutter every day, it keeps you from wanting to bring things into your house in the first place. Over the last few years, we have all faced unprecedented challenges. We've all been rocked by things out of our control, like a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, remote work, supply chain shortages, and more. Then, take into account that our customers probably faced those same issues as well, and we all had a recipe for disaster looking back at us. Some marketing and sales gurus were preying on fear by promoting that they had secret access to the EASY Button which will generate more sales. Companies were hoping that their bright shiny object would entrance leads to only pay attention to their business. Then, needy customers would beg, and pay anything for YOU to solve THEIR problems. Don't you wish it was that simple? In this episode, I will debunk some myths, and hopefully, help you avoid what I call B.S.O.S. (Bright Shiny Object Syndrome.). What did the successful businesses do differently to prosper during those challenges? Want To See How To Market BETTER? - Click Here
In order to bring wealth into our life, we need to focus on the end result. It's often said that if we focus on something, we'll either attract it to us—or we'll manifest an opportunity to get it. While that's true, we also need to have a “vehicle” (such as a business) through which to […] The post The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 390 – Lessons From The Vault: Overwhelm & Bright Shiny Object Syndrome appeared first on Successful Mind Podcast.

Podcast Transcription Brian Basilico: I don't know about you, guys, but I have a problem, and my problem is that I get distracted really easy. I call it, “Squirrel!” Our guest today is really, really good at helping you with that. Her name is Kelly McCausey. Kelly is going to help us learn about Bright Shiny Object Syndrome. Kelly, how are you doing today? Kelly McCausey: I'm great. How are you? Brian: I'm awesome. So, tell us who you are and how did you get to going from being a high school drop out to a solopreneur coach? There's got to be something in the middle there. » Expand To View More - Click Here Kelly: There's a lot in the middle and it's all exciting to me. Being a high school drop out meant I had trouble with money pretty much from the get-go. Being hard to employ hard to promote, hard to credit, I felt like I always startled with money, never had enough and that pretty much describes the first 25 years of my life. But there was a point where someone suggested that I could make some extra money providing a service, doing some desktop publishing. I created a website to offer those services and no one hired me to desktop publish, but lots have wanted me to build them a website. Just like that. That brought me into the world of working home moms. My web host was Working Home Moms, my clients were work-at-home moms and as I would work on their websites, I would see all the different ways that they were making money and it made me very curious. [inaudible] but I had a community at the time, internet-based moms and it was a busy forum where I would sign lots of clients and outside became friends and ended up actually creating a membership site together that was launched in 2004. It completely changed my life because I went from being broke, under-employed to making a really exciting income just by shepherding a community and helping them find the information they needed to be successful. Brian: Awesome. Now that you're doing this stuff, let's talk about “bright shiny objects.” What are bright shiny objects in business and believe me, I understand. But explain to my audience, what do you mean by bright shiny objects? Kelly: In the internet marketing world and business in general, I'm sure Bright Shiny Object Syndrome is an issue, but in the internet marketing world, it's an epidemic of massive proportions. How many mailing lists are you on, Brian? How many people are you subscribed to? Brian: Too many to mention. I'm going to guess there's probably about 25 or 30. Kelly: Then how many Facebook pages have you liked? How many podcasts have you subscribed to? Brian: Too many? Kelly: The input is huge and constant. I just comes in waves – information and offers and they're all so sparkly, they're all so shiny and new. I know when I was first starting to make money on the internet, I knew how to do something, I knew how to create a graphic and sell it, how to create a website and sell it,

As someone who is building her business in the online space, you need to be everywhere all the time. In an ever-changing social media world, new trends come and go constantly. New platforms are developed, created, and rolled out daily. And the early adopters get MASSIVE traction and visibility, because they are paving the way for an entirely new demographic of people to enter into a platform. And while we may moan and groan about algorithm changes, or the newest social network that we HAVE to be on, or the features that get added or taken away at a moment's notice, these changes and new trends are actually a really good thing. Because, it means that there is no one “right” way to do business, especially in the online space. You don't HAVE to be on Facebook if you don't want to. Do you HATE Instagram? Don't be on it.But do know, and this is the important thing here, that you have the potential to NOT find your ideal client by not hanging out in established or even new social media networks. I think we can all get behind the idea that we need to put blinders on and stay in our lane, but I also think we can all get behind that early adaptors, win. QUICK TAKEAWAYS:Go into a new platform with a strategy. If you're not willing to take the time to learn, see what's working, analyze numbers, and then adjust, you're on the fast track to burn out and frustration. Instead of crossing your fingers, throwing spaghetti at the wall, and hoping it sticks adjust, tweak, and implement again and again.Constant content creation is a slippery slope. Develop a strategy to re-use your content in a way that is effective and doesn't require more of your time.Choose your next platform by considering what parts of the platform you can automate. Kathleen Gage - Trends and Shifts Kathleen Gage is a consulting coach moving onto her 2nd act in life with incredible veracity. She left her corporate job over 20 years ago to become an entrepreneur through her business consulting firm, Turning Point, Inc. Kathleen markets her customer's package to reach more of their market in a successful way. Over the past 20 years she has discovered her key to success: Do what you really enjoy and make that your foundation for success and along the way you will discover you can make your own game and create your own rules. Kathleen Gage on Solopreneurs and Building a Support Team Solopreneurs run their business individually but with a support team. The biggest mistake an entrepreneur can make is trying to do it all. You will bottle-neck your own business. To be successful you must figure out your skill set, find out what you should be doing with your business and have a support team to do the rest. Support is critical to your success. You are the spear-head for your enterprise but you must have a staff to support it. The solopreneur is the visionary and keeps the team on track. The support team does the busy work. Remember even though your team may love you and be committed to your success most are not high-level entrepreneurs. You cannot expert your team to have the same level of passion you do for your business. Kathleen organizes her teams with weekly meetings to consider projects she has a vision for. Tasks are assigned and teams or individuals report back on progress, obstacles, and budget. There is a lot of communication. With her high-level clients Kathleen meets with their teams to ensure they understand the objectives of her client, assign tasks and provide weekly reports based upon the needs she has identified for her clients through her 20 years of experience. Passion is the foundation for success - Kathleen Gage Kathleen Gage Identifies Trends, Shifts and News-jacking Business owners must understand their industry, market and clients. They must take notice of financial and economic trends as well as business and personal trends. you cannot rely upon what worked even a month ago if there has been a shift. A lot of people hold on to the belief there entire on-line marketing can be email marketing. In actuality, there is an average open rate of 8-12%n and the click through rate is even lower. If you are relying on email marketing you are making a big mistake. Figure out what it is that really juices you up and gets you excited... then have the courage to go out and do it! - Kathleen Gage A current trend is "news-jacking". Use the Super Bowl as an example. There were millions upon millions upon millions of tweets with certain keywords. If someone were to news-jack, which is a hot way to build a list and get in front of your market, they would write a blog post specific to something going on in the Super Bowl. They would hashtag those keywords and do tweets around their blog. That's a trend that lets your ride the wave of someone else's popularity for your own gain. Kathleen Gage encourages her clients to stay current within their industry and their client's industry and and social media trends. She warns to be careful of BSOS or Bright Shiny Object Syndrome. Don't jump on everything that comes along and spread yourself too thin. Take a look at your results, those can tell you a lot about your success. Kathleen Gage - Taking Risks The more visible you are the more you set yourself up for criticism. Remember, no matter what you do, you are going to be criticized. When you become visible, take a position and have a point of view you will have those who love you and those who don't want anything to do with you. A key to success is the willingness to polarize your market and take a stand. When you are criticized, that's good. It means you are out there and people are talking about you. do what you believe in, move forward, stay true to your message and yourself.
