This week, I’m joined by my friend, mentor, and one-time coach Kelly McCausey. You may recognize her as the creator of the Stretch Yourself Challenge, an annual event I credit with helping to launch a new era in my business. Kelly recently announced that she’s closing the doors on the content marketing side of her business so she can focus on full-time mindset coaching. To celebrate, she’s hosting one final Stretch Yourself Challenge event, so I invited her to come chat with me about content marketing. We talked about how she got started with creating content, the mistakes she sees some marketers making, and what’s next for her own content as she transitions from a B2B business into a B2C market. What you'll learn in this episode: Kelly’s history with content marketing and why she still thinks it’s the best thing you can do for your business growth Kelly’s experience with SEO and what types of businesses benefit from it most The types of content you should not be creating (even though it feels fun and easy) How the Stretch Yourself Challenge evolved and how you can get involved Whether I prefer brownies or coffee mugs as a finisher’s prize Resources mentioned: Stretch Yourself Challenge #15 (the last hurrah) Me Skills (Kelly’s new home on the net) Six-Figure Systems (snap up a $7 trial here)

Overthinking. If you're like me, that's what you do when have a great idea for a new course, but you're anxious about putting it out there for the world to see. Suddenly you're filled with questions. What if you don't know enough about the subject you want to teach? What if you get lost in a sea of others all talking about the same thing? What if what you make doesn't live up to your own (ridiculously) high standards? Just who do you think you are, anyway? Creators in every niche can find these and other questions on endless repeat in our minds. If we're not careful, they'll kill our confidence and shatter our dreams. On this episode of the Tiny Course Empire podcast, I'll give you a new way to think about these and other confidence-crushers, and I'll share my personal struggle as well. What you'll learn in this episode: The confidence-crushing question that kept me from creating my first digital course (until a smart coach set me straight) Why “expert status” is overrated, and what you should aim for instead Why it's ok (maybe even preferable) to admit when you don't have all the answers What it really means to have a USP (unique selling proposition) How to think about your competition Why you'll never run out of ideas for new courses and content Resources mentioned: Six-Figure Systems is where I'll teach you everything I know about launching and growing an online business. Nicole Dean is one of my favorite people in the world, and a phenomenal business coach, too. Kelly McCausey teaches mindset and marketing—a killer combo. Here's her coaching ladder graphic. Jeff Herring knows more about content marketing than I'll ever know. Letting Go of Perfectionism offers up my best advice and some tricks I've learned for silencing your inner critic. Three New Ways to Think About Your Competition gives you… well, new ways to think about your competition.

Have you ever thought to yourself, “There's too much competition in this niche,” or “I'm too late to find success with this,” or “Everyone else does this better than I can”? We've all had those thoughts at one time or another, and it all starts with how we think about the competition. A few weeks ago, I received an email from a subscriber who wondered if she was making a mistake by promoting her potential competitors. Would it take away from her sales down the road? Would she lose customers? That got me thinking about what it means to compete with one another in business, and why we often see competition as a bad thing when in fact, it's the opposite. In this episode, I'm challenging you to change how you think about the competition. I'll give you three new perspectives to try on, along with some real-world examples to show you how each of them can actually improve your business. Prefer a transcript? Here you go! What you'll learn in this episode: How to grow your reach and your income by turning competitors into collaborators Why having competitors in your niche is actually a good thing How your competitors can inspire you to do better Resources mentioned: Six-Figure Systems: Start a one-week all-access-pass trial today for just $7 Karon Thackston teaches you how to use words more effectively Kelly McCausey builds communities through content Liz Wilcox wants to help boost your email marketing skills Amy Harrop has some brilliant ideas for creating low-content products Debbie Gartner is a master of SEO Sue Painter has a wealth of information in a wide variety of business models and niches Angela Wills wants you to design a business around your life instead of the other way around Jeff Herring helps you turn content into profits Tracy Roberts and Susanne Myers create rebrandable content for your blog, email, and other publishing needs Connie Ragen Green believes in giving back to her community as a way of growing her business

In this episode I talk to Liz Priestley about her role in the movie "Concrete Cowboy" starring Idris Elba. When I recorded this the movie hadn't yet found a home. Since then the movie has landed on Netflix where you can watch it if you have an account.   Liz's Bio: Liz Priestley was born (quite prematurely) in Philadelphia, PA. She was adopted by the Priestley family at a young age and grew up with five sisters in Abington, a suburb of Philadelphia. Her father, George, was an attorney and her mother, Linda, worked as his office manager. Liz and her siblings were all encouraged to study both musical instruments and Hollywood musicals of the 50s and 60s. This is when Liz's love of music and performing were born. In addition to learning to play the violin and piano, Liz began to star in her school plays at the Philadelphia Montgomery Christian Academy. This led to her winning a scholarship to study classical opera. Studying opera enabled Liz' skills to flourish and she considered a career in opera upon graduation. Although her parents pushed for her to continue on a path to music, Liz couldn't shake the 'acting bug'. She went on to study Musical Theatre at the prestigious Ithaca College, then moved to New York to pursue a career as an actor. Liz' acting career began with a bang. She was soon cast in multiple plays and commercials. An accomplished stage performer, Liz has appeared in over twenty-five theatre productions in Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C. as an actor, vocalist, violinist, pianist and dancer. She played Panzi Lew McVain in Long Time Since Yesterday with Company of Queens Acting Company in Philadelphia. Liz has performed as both a musician and solo opera performer with Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra, Philadelphia Sinfonia II and with the Academy of Music. After changing her focus from stage to screen, Liz signed with a talent manger and quickly booked a small role on her first episodic television show. Shortly after, she landed her debut movie role in Concrete Cowboys, starring opposite Idris Elba and Caleb McLaughlin. In addition to continuing her film and television pursuits, Liz has also written and produced an original web series, and she is a mom to a wonderful daughters.    THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY:   The book: Get Past Your Sh*t - https://amzn.to/3uy3fSn   This episode of the podcast is being sponsored by the book "Get Past Your Sh*t". Podcast Transcription Brian Basilico: I don't know about you, guys, but I have a problem, and my problem is that I get distracted really easy. I call it, “Squirrel!” Our guest today is really, really good at helping you with that. Her name is Kelly McCausey. Kelly is going to help us learn about Bright Shiny Object Syndrome. Kelly, how are you doing today? Kelly McCausey: I'm great. How are you? Brian: I'm awesome. So, tell us who you are and how did you get to going from being a high school drop out to a solopreneur coach? There's got to be something in the middle there. » Expand To View More - Click Here Kelly: There's a lot in the middle and it's all exciting to me. Being a high school drop out meant I had trouble with money pretty much from the get-go. Being hard to employ hard to promote, hard to credit, I felt like I always startled with money, never had enough and that pretty much describes the first 25 years of my life. But there was a point where someone suggested that I could make some extra money providing a service, doing some desktop publishing. I created a website to offer those services and no one hired me to desktop publish, but lots have wanted me to build them a website. Just like that. That brought me into the world of working home moms. My web host was Working Home Moms, my clients were work-at-home moms and as I would work on their websites, I would see all the different ways that they were making money and it made me very curious. [inaudible] but I had a community at the time, internet-based moms and it was a busy forum where I would sign lots of clients and outside became friends and ended up actually creating a membership site together that was launched in 2004. It completely changed my life because I went from being broke, under-employed to making a really exciting income just by shepherding a community and helping them find the information they needed to be successful. Brian: Awesome. Now that you're doing this stuff, let's talk about “bright shiny objects.” What are bright shiny objects in business and believe me, I understand. But explain to my audience, what do you mean by bright shiny objects? Kelly: In the internet marketing world and business in general, I'm sure Bright Shiny Object Syndrome is an issue, but in the internet marketing world, it's an epidemic of massive proportions. How many mailing lists are you on, Brian? How many people are you subscribed to? Brian: Too many to mention. I'm going to guess there's probably about 25 or 30. Kelly: Then how many Facebook pages have you liked? How many podcasts have you subscribed to? Brian: Too many? Kelly: The input is huge and constant. I just comes in waves – information and offers and they're all so sparkly, they're all so shiny and new. I know when I was first starting to make money on the internet, I knew how to do something, I knew how to create a graphic and sell it, how to create a website and sell it,

If you’ve listened to Pep Talks for Side Hustlers for any length of time, you know that once a month I give you a look behind the scenes of my business into not only the financials and the strategies, but also the journey of me running up against my limiting beliefs and having to work through my fear and self-doubt on my quest reach the goals I’ve set for myself. And just like any good quest, I meet people along the way who reveal the path forward for me, and my conversation with today’s guest was another one of those transformational moments. Kelly McCausey is the founder of Love People + Make Money, a membership program for female entrepreneurs, especially single moms, to help them build up their communities and businesses. One of the reasons I was so excited to have Kelly on the show is that just like me, she’s all about building a business through relationships and community. Kelly and I did this interview at the end of January and at the time, I was just closing out my biggest revenue month ever, and like I told you back in my January 2020 Income Report that one of my podcast guests mentioned the book “The Big Leap” to me in an interview. That was Kelly.  And she probably doesn’t know this, but her recommendation sent me on that four-month long journey that I talked about in my April 2020 Income Report (288) to rewire my mindset around money, my self-worth, how I value my body of work and what makes me happy.  That’s the kind of person Kelly is, and that’s the kind of impact she can have on someone in a single conversation, so I’m super excited to introduce you to her today so you can connect with her and change your life too. Today we’re talking about: Kelly’s journey from starting a work-at-home-mom radio station to building a community around her podcast. How she creates connections and community. How she started monetizing without trading hours for dollars. How she sets herself apart + finds success in a saturated market. Why building real, genuine relationships will build your business. What a typical day looks like for Kelly. Her best advice if you’re struggling to grow your business. The one belief Kelly had to change about herself to get where she is today. My favorite quotes from Kelly: “When you're brand new, the most important thing you can do is take a stand and have something to say.”  “If you want people to know that you're legit and that you care about them, then then show it” “Create content that gives value, create experiences that deliver value. Create the opportunities for people to see you the way you want to be seen." “A great brand comes out of knowing yourself and knowing your community so well.” Resources mentioned in this episode: Jessica Larue Mastermind Hub Code: Kelly The Big Leap Book Bio: I got my start in 2002. Have you ever wondered if you could really make money on the Internet? I've got a solution for you. I'm going to share how to make money by solving your community's problems. Are you confused about how to get started, or maybe not sure where your expertise lies? Can You Reall Make Money on the Internet? If either of those things is true for you, you're going to want to listen to today's episode because it's all about building communities and finding ways to make money from them. My guest, Kelly McCausey, has been at this “making money on the internet” thing for quite a while. She began as a broke single mom, looking for a way to provide for her family. Today, she runs a site called  Love People + Make Money. Kelly has learned how to build communities and serve her people by finding out what their problems are, and either creating products to solve them, or using affiliate links to provide solutions. Pivoting in Business As Kelly's business grew, she began to learn more and more skills in her niche until she was seen by others as an expert. So, when she decided to pivot in her business, she knew exactly which way to go. Instead of doing things for people, which is what she had built her business on, she began a business teaching people how to do those things for themselves. She went from creating websites and design for clients to selling information services and coaching. Kelly figured out how to leverage her skills to encompass everything she was doing for others and turn that into a business of its own. The Importance of Building a Community  Creating content is easy for many people when they begin an online business. Writing a blog post might be easy-peasy for you.  The question is, do you know how to promote it? Do you know how to market your skills or content online? How do you take the podcast you're pouring your heart and soul into and get it in front of people who could benefit from it? Kelly didn't know how important community was when she started her podcast. She was simply curious and wanted to ask questions of smart people. And while she knew that others would enjoy listening to the show, she had no idea how much they would enjoy interacting with each other.  Back in 2001 when Kelly was doing her podcast, there was no Facebook, or any other social media platform, where audiences could interact with each other. People used forums to have discussions.  An organic audience grew around her podcast and she and a partner began running a paid mastermind. The podcast and their content marketing led people to the mastermind membership.  Fast forward a few months and the women in the member community were planning projects together.  As the community grew around Kelly's offerings, she was ultimately able to leave her day job to focus full-time on her business.  Growing Community Through Content “Content will attract a community and content will grow a community.” Building a community around your content takes a strategy; it's not a case of build it and they will come. Nothing is ever that simple. Facebook has made it so easy to create a community that people think, “Oh, I'll start a Facebook group. I'll build a community there.”  But if your idea of community is sharing a ton of links and articles with the people there but not fostering conversation, you aren't building a community.  Communities share experiences. To build an authentic community, create a space that's about the members, not about you. Co-creating with your community members is the real way to build a community that people want to be a part of. Move toward your members and away from total self-promotion.  Community Strategies  Kelly's focus is on building a community she loves, getting to know their needs, and then positioning herself to solve problems for them. She positions herself to know what female marketers need in the realm of content marketing and she teaches them those things.  But at some point, Kelly was faced with not being able to solve a problem for someone in her community. What do you do when, not if, that happens? Simple. Find someone who can solve it for them and use affiliate programs to continue to build your own business while still solving your audience's problems.  Use Affiliates to Market to Your Community Kelly was late to start with affiliate marketing. She's authentic when she says she didn't start using it until a full year after she should have. She just figured there wasn't much money in it.  The problem was that she missed the big picture that, like most things, affiliate marketing starts slowly but it builds momentum. Affiliate marketing isn't a get rich quick scheme, so start now if you want to see results later. *Just a note: MiloTree has a very generous affiliate program so if you love our MiloTree pop-up and you send new customers our way, we want to show our great appreciation to you and pay you $20 per conversion. The fantastic thing about affiliate marketing is that it's a 3-way win: As the affiliate, you win by making money.  The business you are linking to wins because you send them sales.  And the person who clicks on your affiliate links and makes a purchase wins because they get a great product.  As an affiliate marketer, you aren't trying to squeeze every drop of money you can from your audience. You are simply putting forward products that are relevant to your niche, products that will help your audience, and products that you use and believe in. If you currently have content on your site that could contain affiliate links but you don't have them there, go back right now and add them in. You are doing your audience a disservice by not telling them about products that could change their lives. Why We Undervalue Ourselves As women, we want to serve others; we want to care for them. But what that often means is that we undervalue our talents, time, and products.  You need to be willing to charge what you are worth, and not feel guilty about it. The more money you make through affiliates, the more you can serve your people with free content. Sometimes moms have a skewed perception of what their time and work are worth. Making money through affiliate marketing can feel awkward or unfair. Like, why should you be making this “easy money”? Here's the deal: if you are not charging what you are worth, people will believe that you don't know what you are talking about. So, pick a number that makes you uncomfortable and then double it. Monetary Stages of Business There are stages in your business when you will know that you should raise your prices, but it's okay to start small.  If you love to shop at a certain store, it's fine to tag that store in your IG story just because you really do love the store and you want to get in front of them. When you're just getting started in business, you aren't going to be doing $10K campaigns for Target.  But as you continue growing your business, you also continue to grow personally and as an entrepreneur. Offer low prices in the beginning in order to build your portfolio of testimonials and partnerships. As your partnerships grow, raise your prices. If you do a campaign for $50 and it's successful, offer a second campaign for $100.  At some point, you will hit what Kelly calls “your sweet price," when your customer does not want to pay more, and you're happy with the number. Then you don't have to keep charging more.  I loved Kelly's story and the experiences she shared with us in this episode. Be sure to listen in to the episode in its entirety to glean all the nuggets she shared that we couldn't include in this post.  What Type of Online Entrepreneur is MiloTree Right For? #episode80 As conscious, introverted entrepreneurs, many of us struggle with pricing. We want to be fair and make our offerings accessible, but we also need to build a sustainable business that will thrive for the long-term. So, how do we develop an awareness of our current money mindset? And how do we shift that mindset to determine pricing that serves our community AND pays the bills? Kelly McCausey is the creator of Love People + Make Money, a business built on the idea that sinking your roots deep into a community and addressing their needs leads to profit. When she got her start as a solopreneur 17 years ago, Kelly charged too little for her time. Before long, though, she learned smarter ways to build an income online. Now, she serves as a business coach and event host, helping others leverage content marketing and community building to design profitable businesses of their own. Top Takeaways Don't let your comfort zone keep you from doing something amazing. Getting out of your comfort zone will help you learn about yourself, achieve new things, and make you more confident in who you are as a person. Take partnerships seriously, even with your competition. Before you start a partnership, try out a collaborative project first.  Don't let raising your prices for your product or business hold you back. When you provide value, you will also provide opportunities for your community to grow together. Playing small keeps a lid on your audience, and does a disservice to them.  Think big tree vs. tending a fledgling orchard. Focus your efforts on a singular business that eventually (not immediately) has multiple branches.

I have been listening to podcasts for a very long time. I started with Kelly McCausey, a podcast I believe was called work at home moms (WAHM). Then I listened to the podcast with Denise Griffitts, Your Partner in Success and followed Nicole Dean. At one point I even flirted with the idea of producing my own podcast but quickly dismissed the idea then  getting busy with subcontracting projects. My time was turning into profits. Fast forward a few years and once again I began flirting with the idea of creating my own podcast and began researching why virtual assistants and service providers weren’t using a team to turn their own business into profits. In my research I found that there really isn’t another podcast that addresses and educates about this topic. So, I contacted one of the original role models, Denise Griffitts and asked for some coaching. She agreed. That’s how Virtual Team 360 podcast was born. Now that you know a little of the back story, In the first interview, I wanted to share with you why I think going forward with the podcast on the subcontracting concept will be an important tool for team members, virtual service providers and multi-VAs.
