The Beauty of Testimony: Broken Crayons Still Color
What drives you into sin? For Samson it was sexual desire. In the end, he humbled himself and was still used by God in a mighty way. We can do the same by shedding our evil desires and be used by God for great works.

Broken Crayons #RTTBROS #Nightlight
Broken Crayons #RTTBROS #nightlight Broken Crayons "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." (2 Corinthians 4:7 KJV) Have you ever reached for a crayon to color only to find it broken in half or worn down to a nub? In our disappointment, we tend to cast those crayons aside, assuming they're useless now. However, with just a little more effort, those same broken crayons can still create beautiful artwork. Like crayons, we sometimes feel useless when life has left us feeling broken. We tell ourselves the lie that God can no longer use cracked vessels like us. But the truth is, our broken places, rather than disqualifying us, make room for God's light to shine through more beautifully. The apostle Paul spoke of this paradox, reminding followers of Christ that the treasure of the gospel dwells within imperfect earthen vessels. In other words, broken crayons still color the same. God is the ultimate recycler and redeemer, able to gather up the fragments of our broken dreams and relationships in order to repurpose them into something new. He knows how to take our mess and turn it into a message, using the cracks in our lives to reveal His light within. Our imperfections are not obstacles for an all-powerful God. Rather, they provide an opportunity for His grace, mercy and healing to be shown as sufficient to restore our soul. So when you feel like a worn out, broken crayon today, remember that you were designed to color. Allow God to take your life in all its fractures and flaws, and turn it into a work of art that displays His redemption for the world to see. Even broken crayons still color the same in the hand of the Master Artist. This is a must listen to those feeling a bit broken and lost. You still have color in you. Don't give up.
In this episode, I use a quote from a student in our Master Leadership class to offer 7 tips on how to become more resilient as a leader. Everyone of us goes through personal and professional crises. It's the nature of human existence. Those of us who choose to be significant, tackle adversity head on and find ways to build your personal resilience. Dean talks about some of his own challenges during his 30+ year career and how he overcame the feeling of "brokenness." We are not born with resilience, but we can, with a little effort and commitment, create the conditions that grow our resilience. When you find your own personal recipe to do this, you will come out stronger and more flexible than you were before the crisis. That's what creates significant people and leaders. I truly love hearing about other people's journeys as it provides such valuable insight. It provides important perspective as we all struggle with something and realizing that you are not alone, it all becomes just a little more tolerable. I really appreciate today's guest, Fire Chief Carlos Aviles, who honestly and vulnerably shared his story. We discussed the growth he gained through adversity, Aviles' time in the Army reserve, his pathway into the fire service and finally into the office of Fire Chief. Aviles wife once told him that “broken crayons still color”. This is advice that we all need to hear from time to time. Please enjoy this episode! A little more about our guest… Chief Carlos Aviles is a 22-year Army Veteran with combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and an 18-year career firefighter. In 2004 after an initial 16-month deployment to Iraq, he pursued a career in the fire service and in 2005 was hired by the St. Augustine Fire Department. He is still an active reservist with the US Army Reserve as a Senior Advisor to the 418th MP Detachment. In 2016, he was appointed Fire Chief for the City of St. Augustine where he still serves today, Chief Aviles also serves as the City's Emergency Management Coordinator. He is on the Florida Fire Chiefs' Board of Directors, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Board of Directors, and currently chairs the state of Florida's Firefighter Standards and Employment Council as well as the Florida Fire and Emergency Incident Information System Technical Advisory Panel. Our guy, big Church, lays the gun on his buddy Mike on this week's heavy-duty episode of The Broken Crayons Podcast. Mike's story is a wild one, inadvertently finding his way into "the life" at a very young age, he explains how the darkness can just envelop us whether we like it or not. You'll hear how Mike leaned into all of it, rubbing more than elbows with Ron Jeremy, doing time in the SHU, running a fight club, and so much more. What we ultimately hear is a tragic, beautiful, and hilarious story of how creativity, love, and recovery can pierce the cruel influence of something as mean as addiction. Hunter Michael Shepard gets inked and tells his story on this week's episode of The Broken Crayons Podcast. Church draws a hell of a story out of Hunter that shows the progressive nature of the disease of addiction. Meth, spice, roxys, getting a hot shot, prison, knocking on death's door...all that. But the meat of this conversation comes in the honesty Hunter shares about the winding path he had to walk to find recovery. We all may take a different trail to the top of the mountain but all that matters is that we make it to see the summit.

Three weeks out from the date of his seventh year of recovery, our guest Kip goes under the gun with Church on this week's episode of the Broken Crayons Podcast. Kip hits us with a hard-hittin' and artful portrayal of life in captivity to substance, as well as getting super real about the difficult things that can happen to us in this life that drive us to using. He gives us a view into the mindset that can justify more than thirty years spent in prison on the "installment plan". Most importantly, Kip shares how the road to recovery can redeem us and lift us out of the darkness and away from all that gnarly shit. #WeDoRecover #BrokenCrayons
