Quarter-Arsed History presents: the Ball of the Burning Men, a wedding celebration at which the reigning French king, Charles the Mad, was almost burnt to a crisp. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
On today's episode, The History Guy talks about two Mad Monarchs. The first is Charles VI of France, whose mental illness changed the fortunes of France and who was nearly set aflame in the Ball of the Burning Men. The second is Bavarian “Mad” King Ludwig II, whose obsession with fairy tale and opera led him to build one of the most iconic castles in history.

The double marriage between the Habsburg and Spanish dynasties organised in the creation of the Holy League in 1495 was part of a larger plan driven by the Spanish monarchs to create a general European-wide alliance against the French. To further these aims, Ferdinand and Isabella also arranged for their other children to marry into the Portuguese and English royal families as well. Such good family planning, however, was not to yield anywhere near the results that Ferdinand and Isabella sought. In this episode we will track the tumultuous journeys leading up to the weddings which brought Spain and the Low Countries together, the devastating repercussions the Spanish monarchs' religiosity would have for the Jews of the Iberian peninsula, as well as a series of untimely deaths which would see the Spanish succession repeatedly shuffle down the line. When the music stopped in this dynastic game of musical chairs, Philip the Handsome and Joanna of Castile's five month old baby son, Charles, would found himself perched on the stool which held possession of a ridiculous amount of Spanish, Imperial and Burgundian titles, all of which would eventually make him the most powerful person in Europe. Verse 2 The almighty Church frowns upon these pagan rites They might be kingmakers but did they really think they could change our ways ? We will pray to the One God and chant with the priests at dawn But we'll still dance past the noon and sing the old tunes Verse 3 Lights out, foul creatures burst into the room suddenly Exotic monsters to amuse, really the king's bunch in disguise Some lesser count has devised this brilliant surprise Dancers covered in pitch and feathers, which come alight so easily And so the guessing game begins, among them hides our king Under which of these grotesque suits is our crown ? His brother in the crowd can't wait to find out Can't help himself to break the one rule - No fire inside ! For lack of light he grabs a flame - No. Fire. Inside!! No! Chorus The king rules surrounded by fools They came to the feast in the guise of a beast Madness reigns as they're bound in chains Let the dames shield you from the flames It's the Ball of the Burning Men ! The third novel from the author of The Burning Men and The Killing Choice, featuring DI Alex Fin and DCI Mattie Paulsen. Sadie Nicholls has been found dead, brutally and strangely murdered, in her South East London flat. Her little boy is missing. DI Alex Finn and DC Mattie Paulsen know that, in the case of a missing child, it's the first 24 hours that count. They don't have many left to find out where Sadie's son might be and the identity of her killer. Why would anyone want a struggling single mother, loved by many, dead? But when they realise a similar crime was committed at the same house nearly 20 years ago, a question is on everyone's lips: is this more than just a coincidence? This is third in Will Shindler's Finn and Paulsen series - a British detective series that ranks with Mark Billingham, M.J. Arlidge and Stuart MacBride.

The second novel from the author of The Burning Men, featuring Di Alex Fin and Dci Mattie Paulsen. Leave your daughter with me, or I will kill you both. It felt like any other evening before Karl and his daughter were ambushed by a figure in a blank mask. A knife is put to her throat and Karl is forced to make an impossible decision. Stay and die, or walk away and take this thug's word that they will both live. Should he trust a villain and leave his daughter with a knife at her throat? Could he ever live with himself if he did? It's not long before more seemingly unconnected and innocent people across London are offered a deal in exchange for their life. More blood is spilled, more families shattered and more people are left to suffer with the consequences of their decisions. DI Alex Finn and DC Mattie Paulsen must hunt for a killer that appears to have no face, no motive and no conscience before more victims are forced to take their pick. This is second in Will Shindler's Finn and Paulsen series - a British detective series that ranks with Mark Billingham, M.J. Arlidge and Stuart MacBride.

When a high-rise development in South London catches fire mid-construction, a close-knit team of fire fighters tackle the blaze. The building should be empty, but they find a man, unconscious, next to several cases of money. The fire crew make a fateful decision; leave the man, take the money, quit the service and never speak of this again. But five years later one of them is set alight in the toilets at his own wedding. Soon after, a second is found in the burnt out remains of his Maserati, nothing but a smoking corpse. It appears that someone knows what they did. And there are still three firemen left to go. . . DI Alex Finn and DC Mattie Paulsen are an unlikely pairing, but they need to discover who is behind these killings before the last man burns. This is first in Will Shindler's Finn and Paulsen series - a British detective series that ranks with Mark Billingham, M.J. Arlidge, Staurt Macbride.

Burning Men is here! And TerraHeart nears completion. Our favorite survivors at the end of the world have discovered - through Yang - a way to push their broadcast directly into Potreblyat's face. The stakes have never been higher for these DnD players, and while Twilight, Virt, and Torrin have magic to face the Wight, the real world isn't so gracious, and their monsters are very, very real.

Aki Omoshaybi is a relatively quiet name in the British Black film industry. He's recently completed his first debut feature ,'Real' a romcom. We caught up with him however to talk to him about his role in Burning Man a new British Road Trip horror movie. In cinemas from March 1st Burning Men is about three young musicians Ray (Ed Hayter) and Don (Aki Omoshaybi) who are evicted from their South London squat, they decide to sell their precious vinyl collection and fly to Memphis in search of their destiny. Frustrated by the shortfall in funds, they steal an ‘uber-rare' Black Metal record at a Camden record fair and head out of town to sell it. As they drive north in their beaten-up Volvo Amazon, picking up hitchhiker Susie (Elinor Crawley) en route, they find themselves stalked by dark forces apparently unleashed by the ‘devil disc' they have stolen. Burning Men gets its digital release March 18th 2019 Watch the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLtfIEF2cW0
