For nearly half a century, Richard “Dickie” Landry was at the center of the New York avant-garde. Born in the small Louisiana town of Cecilia in 1938, he began making pilgrimages to the city while still in his teens in search of the city's most cutting edge gestures in jazz, and relaxed there not long after, falling in with a close knit community of artists and composers like Keith Sonnier, Philip Glass, Joan Jonas, Gordon Matt Clarke, Richard Serra, Robert Rauschenberg, Nancy Graves, Lawrence Weiner, Steve Reich, Jon Gibson, and Robert Wilson. Landry remains one of the few artists of his generation who made important waves within numerous creative idioms. Having been trained from a young age on saxophone, not only is he a remarkably respected solo performer and bandleader, but he was an early and long-standing member of Philip Glass' ensemble, playing on seminal records like Music With Changing Parts, Music in Similar Motion / Music in Fifths, Music in Twelve Parts, North Star, and Einstein on the Beach, and played with Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson, and jazz giants like Johnny Hammond, Gene Ammons, and Les McCann. He was also one of the most important photographic documenters of the New York Scene, until he left the city for his native Louisiana, following 9/11."Einstein on the Beach, it's a masterpiece. America, in 1976, was to be celebrating its 200th year of existence, and Michel Guy, the French Minister of Culture, came to New York to offer a commission to Philip Glass and Robert Wilson to write an opera. This was the gift that France would give for America's two-hundredth anniversary. Here in Acadiana, whether you re a recent arrival or your family s been here for generations, there s one thing we all agree on we have a unique culture that we need to preserve. That s a great sentiment. But even though we all have it, wishing doesn t make it happen. For culture to be preserved, somebody has to actually preserve it. Most of us are busy, working and raising families. Despite whatever good cultural intentions we may have, we re more likely able to quote lines from our favorite Netflix shows than lyrics to Cajun songs. Luckily for us, and for future generations, there are people among us who are making it their life s work to preserve, and to grow, our unique culture. One of them is Grammy Award winning musician, Joel Savoy. A member of one of the royal families of Cajun music, Joel plays in a band with his mom and dad Marc and Ann and brother Wilson as well as with many other combinations of Cajun musicians here in Acadiana, across the country, and around the world. Joel is also the co founder and owner of the record label Valcour Records, where you ll find music by Steve Riley, Bonsoir Catin, Cedric Watson, the Balfa Family, and many more. It s one thing to preserve a traditional culture. It s another thing altogether to get people to consume it, in competition for their attention with Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and every other distraction out there. The secret of social media is, not to be solely a consumer of it, but to use it as a marketing tool whether your message is Cajun culture or lawnmower repair. Here in Acadiana we are not typically known for our early adoption of technology. Matt Thibodeaux is something of an exception to that rule. Matt started out crafting social media campaigns for local companies back in the online marketing dark ages, over 8 years ago. Today Matt s Lafayette social media marketing company, The Matthew Aaron Agency, has over 15 employees, and social media marketing has become a key tool for businesses worldwide. BETH McKEE is a Southern singer/songwriter/pianist/accordion player. A former member of the popular New Orleans country-cajun group Evangeline (MCA Records) McKee toured extensively behind two critically acclaimed albums. L.A. Weekly raved Beths piano is “worthy of some Jerry Lee Lewis arson. Long before her career took off nationally, the Mississippi native played piano in church. She played blues on the chitlin circuit from steamy juke joints to muddy hog farms, and emerged as a respected player on the New Orleans, Austin and Nashville music scenes. In 2010, the self-released Im That Way displays all those southern roots fusing to formulate her swampy and soulful musical identity. CEDRIC WATSON is one of the most noted young talents to emerge in Cajun or Creole music in the past few years. This Grammy nominated artist is a fiddler, vocalist, accordionist and songwriter of seemingly unlimited potential. Born in 1983, Cedric grew up in San Felipe, Texas surrounded by the sounds of blues, old soul, country and zydeco. Unlike his hip-hop focused peers, Cedric was drawn to the old-style French songs of Southwest Louisiana and the greater Houston area. He soon made his way to Lafayette, LA where he was enthusiastically accepted into the musical community and immediately recognized as an important participant in the continuity of Creole music. Cedric will be performing on WoodSongs with his band Bijou Creole.
