Philly-based Native Harrow have remained largely independent - musically, professionally, and aesthetically, since their beginning, meticulously crafting and perfecting a sound that is melded together from pieces of folk, soul, and rock n' roll. On 13th September, they release new album Divided Kind. This album is the lifetime's work of two scholars of music whose individual backgrounds in the arts have forged a strict artistic discipline that exists in sharp contrast to the more traditionally laissez-faire world of rock and popular music. Pre-save Divided Kind here. Over a catalogue of six albums, Native Harrow have produced a discography of “rich, engrossing records” and “instant classics” while single-mindedly following their own artistic code, acquiescing only to the exigence of the song: each song its own world with its own rules. Their original perspective and extraordinary songwriting, combined with a completely individual approach to crafting albums and steering their career, has garnered them coverage at Uncut, Mojo, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The Line of Best Fit, Paste, American Songwriter, The Bluegrass Situation, Holler, Rough Trade, Telegraph, The Evening Standard, The Times, Shindig, The Sun, and many more. They've shared stages with legends including the Eagles, Robert Plant & Alison Kraus, and Beth Hart, as well as acts including Sierra Ferrell, The Heavy Heavy, Courtney Marie Andrews, The Cactus Blossoms, Great Lake Swimmers, Esme Patterson, and more. #Music #Interview #Albums

The beauty of local music is the ability to witness new artists grow, and I feel so honored to have an opportunity to follow the rapid and organic development of Molly Brandt, a truly authentic artist finding her voice and place in our community. Nestled in Lowry Hill on one of the coldest evenings of the year, we discuss her burgeoning songwriting skills, experiencing a dream come to fruition by recently opening for the Cactus Blossoms, and how she navigates the Twin Cities music scene through valuable support from other artists. Molly Brandt is a fresh country voice in a city that is ready for the charm, rhinestone sparkle, and genuine love of music.

What's new Nerds? We've got a few new releases to share with you fine folks.Andy's pick comes from indie rock veteran Elvis Costello and his band The Imposters. The record finds Costello channeling his early straight-ahead rock sound – and doing it well.Don's selection is a folk rock record from Minneapolis-based duo The Cactus Blossoms. It features vocal harmonies reminiscent of the Everly Brothers while sampling the best of 70s country and soft rock. The Dude's pick comes from the land down under – William Crighton's latest album Water and Dust. Though the record is steeped in Australian sounds and lore, we all found it relatable and I dare say, enjoyable. What do you think of these records? What great albums are we missing out on? At the tender age of eighteen, the Seattle-born crooner Gus Clark hit out to explore the United States with a backpack and a mandolin, cutting his teeth playing on the street and traveling by freight train or the kindness of those still bold enough to pick up a hitchhiker. Emerging over ten years later as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist (guitar, accordion, mandolin, and more), he now pays beautiful homage to an ultra-deep well of golden-era American music traditions, ranging from pre-WWII blues to 1960s Nashville honky tonk. In a voice that combines unique sincerity with pitch-perfect emotive richness, Clark delivers classic barn-burners, good-time dance tunes, bittersweet heartbreak ballads, and his own originals. His remarkable tenor and powerful musical presence are guaranteed to both wrench hearts and propel listeners onto the dance floor, whether Clark performs solo or backed by his rock-solid band.Over the years, Clark has proved himself as a staple of the Seattle music scene, frequenting the area's renowned country dance bars and Americana venues and lighting up its largest festivals with a range of projects. A regular guest vocalist at tribute nights and charity events, he's shared the stage with contemporary greats and up-and-comers such as Charlie Crockett, Pokey LaFarge, Eilen Jewell, Cactus Blossoms, Jeremy Pinnell, Whitney Rose, Easy Leaves, and Jaime Wyatt. He's a regular touring member of the outlaw party-country band Country Lips, contributing on accordion, vocals, and mandolin. For a decade now, Clark has also made music - an unmatchable mix of early jazz, jug-band, country, blues, old-time, Cajun, klezmer and originals - with his "musical sibling,” the Virginia-raised fiddle virtuoso and singer/songwriter Annie Ford. The dynamic duo's sweet harmonies have won hearts in humble living rooms, on street corners, on the grand stages of old vaudeville theaters, and far beyond.https://www.gusclarkmusic.com/ https://www.facebook.com/gusclarkmusic/https://www.instagram.com/gusclarkmusic/?hl=enhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/30Brw2NUOHg27lJfSsalHVhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/gus-clark-the-least-of-his-problems/1435461314

On this new episode, maybe we need something soft to counter the hard news many Americans have witnessed this week: so why not dive into the crystalline brother harmonies of Minneapolis duo The Cactus Blossoms, who just put out a lush new record One Day?Sure, you could write off what Jack Torrey and Page Burkum are creating as simply a loving homage to roots pop pioneers like the Everly or Louvin Brothers with an acerbic modern twist. But with allies like David Lynch (who inserted them into his rebooted Twin Peaks universe) and Jenny Lewis in their corner (she joins them on the bouncy tear-jerker “Everyday”) there is something a bit more biting under the sweet-as-candy close harmonies and hushed acoustic guitars, Wurlitzer and pedal steel. With a song like “I Could Almost Cry,” you have to dive beneath the aching minor country chords and Hank Williams-adjacent lyrics to find a Beatles Rubber Soul fury roiling underneath. As the soft-spoken mention in this freewheeling talk - what lurks inside many of the songs on One Day isn't just the story of a broken love affair - but maybe of our slowly-breaking country which Jack and Page see out on the road and try and make sense of anew.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-show-on-the-road-with-z-lupetin1106/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Jack Torrey, one half of the indie band The Cactus Blossoms, joins Rhett from his home in Minneapolis to talk about getting back on the road, writing and recording a new record during the pandemic, and why he was content to not have a plan other than playing music. Jack tells Rhett about the impact that Bob Dylan had on his writing, and explains what he means when he says he's the “eye of the storm”. “Hey baby, do you wanna take a trip with me? / I've got a feeling there might be a silver lining all around.” So begins One Day, the captivating new album from critically acclaimed Minneapolis duo The Cactus Blossoms. Written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, the record explores the tension between optimism and despair that's defined much of the past few years of American life, examining the power (or naïveté, depending on your perspective) of positive thinking in the face of chaos and uncertainty. The songs here are tender and timeless, with straightforward arrangements centered around brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum's air tight harmonies, and the performances are warm and intimate to match, delivered with a soulful, '70s-inspired palette of playful Wurlitzer, breezy guitars, and muscular percussion. As broadcast January 10, 2022 with plenty of extra rememberance for David Bowie. Tonight we remember David Bowie's incredible body of work, and rather than be sad about his transformation six years to the day, we remember him in his prime to start the show. A full program of fresh new cuts await after that, including a new mix of Bowie's "Shadow Man" which just dropped last week. Kat Bass joins us for The Popcast after that, with plenty of big tunes to sink your teeth into and finish off the show right!#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)David Bowie – Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly DazedThe Smile – You Will Never Work In Television AgainBroken Social Scene feat Sebastian Granger – Curse Your FailSports – Damn I'm TiredBeirut – Fyodor DoormatDOPE LEMON – Howl With Me Part II (30:28)Kendra Morris – Penny PincherDavid Byrne feat Yo La Tango – Who Has Seen The Wind?David Bowie – Shadow Man (Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric Mix)Waxahatchee – Up in the SkyBeau – San FranciscoThe Cactus Blossoms feat Jenny Lewis – Everybody Okey Dokey – Empire Ants Part III (58:55)Demi Lovato - Dancing with the DevilAvril Lavigne - Bite Me*Eric Nam - WildfireThe Weeknd - Out of TimeBonobo ft.

In Episode 12 of The Jukebox Graduate, Dave and Eugene run through the news of the first couple of months of the year. The prattling pair briefly go over Dave's trip to NAMM. Eugene complains about the film Bohemian Rhapsody and that begets a discussion about Rock ‘n' Roll and movies, and the glory of the Monkees. Then, they interview Brad Sample and talk about his upcoming album, Rhinestones and Broken Bones. Brad had a hiccup releasing his album and that leads us to the recent news about Ryan Adams. The age old art-versus-artist discussion ensues and... well the guys just don't have the answer. And finally we hear about the new music that is flipping the Graduates' lids. Throughout the show we hear from Queen, the Monkees, the Cactus Blossoms, Ted Russell Kamp, Brad Sample, Ryan Adams, Phoebe Bridgers, Pedro the Lion, Gary Clark Jr. and the Kinks. The Cactus Blossoms are made of conundrums. The duo is from Minneapolis - states away from the nearest cactus. Page Burkum and Jack Torrey are brothers - only with different last names. And, even though their songs are young and fresh, their tight harmonies and rockabilly guitar would sound just as at home 60 years ago. The pair took time out at the 2016 30A Songwriters Festival to talk to Folk Alley about their music and and allow BeeHive Productions to capture video performances.
