The episode opens with Bhatt framing the global stakes: from drones on the battlefield to AI-powered early warning systems, militaries worldwide are racing to integrate AI, often citing strategic necessity in volatile security environments. Mohan underscores that AI in conflict cannot be characterized in a single way, applications range from decision-support systems and logistics to disinformation campaigns and border security. The conversation explores two categories of AI-related risks:Inherent risks: design flaws, bias in datasets, adversarial attacks, and human–machine trust calibration.Applied risks: escalation through miscalculation, misuse in targeting, and AI's role as a force multiplier for nuclear and cyber threats. On governance, Mohan explains the fragmentation of current disarmament processes, where AI intersects with multiple regimes, nuclear, cyber, conventional arms, yet lacks a unified framework. She highlights ongoing debates at the UN's Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on LAWS, where consensus has been stalled over definitions, human-machine interaction, and whether regulation should be voluntary or treaty-based.International humanitarian law (IHL) remains central, with discussions focusing on how principles like distinction, proportionality, and precaution can apply to autonomous systems. Mohan also emphasizes a “life-cycle approach” to weapon assessment, extending legal and ethical oversight from design to deployment and decommissioning.A significant portion of the conversation turns to gender and bias, an area Mohan has advanced through her research at UNIDIR. She draws attention to how gendered and racial biases encoded in AI systems can manifest in conflict, stressing the importance of diversifying participation in both technology design and disarmament diplomacy.Looking forward, Mohan cites UN Secretary-General António Guterres's call for a legally binding instrument on autonomous weapons by 2026. She argues that progress will depend on multi-stakeholder engagement, national strategies on AI, and confidence-building measures between states. The episode closes with a reflection on the future of warfare as inseparable from governance innovation—shifting from arms reduction to resilience, capacity-building, and responsible innovation.Episode ContributorsShimona Mohan is an associate researcher on Gender & Disarmament and Security & Technology at UNIDIR in Geneva, Switzerland. In this episode, Paurvi Bhatt, public health expert and founder of ThirdEyeFocus, explores the complex intersections between caregiving, healthcare systems, cultural identity, and systemic equity. Reflecting on her experience as a first-generation Indian-American and longtime caregiver, she reveals how immigrant backgrounds shape both personal and professional choices, and how informal caregiving functions as an invisible backbone of healthcare. Paurvi critiques the gap between healthcare innovation and its practical use at home, highlighting the emotional isolation caregivers face and the lack of support and reimbursement for their work. She calls for moving beyond vague notions of “impact” by demanding measurable results and urges leaders to resist technology-driven detachment in favor of genuine human connection. Tune in and learn how we must reimagine care, connection, and accountability, starting not from systems, but from the human stories we're ignoring! Modi Government Bashes Congress in Parliament | Dhankar vs Modi | Bihar में बाहर है | VN Bhatt & DP
Robinhood co-founder Baiju Bhatt has always believed in thinking big — but what most people don’t see is the grit and pain it took to get there. In this episode, Baiju shares his personal story: growing up as the son of Indian immigrants, watching his father’s health fail, and being an overweight kid who turned to running as a way to take control of his life. That mental toughness became the foundation for everything — from co-founding Robinhood and changing how millions interact with finance, to now launching a new company, Aetherflux, with a mission to build an energy grid in space. It sounds like science fiction, but Baiju is proving it’s possible. He and Kate talk about the pressure immigrant kids carry, how movement helps him stay grounded while building high-stakes companies, and why belief in your own ideas is the only way to survive as a founder. If you’ve ever doubted yourself, felt like the outsider, or dreamed something people said was impossible — this episode is for you.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Neelay Bhatt was born in Mumbai, India, and didn't move to Indiana until 2006, after he finished a graduate degree in sports administration. But he found a home here because he speaks the language of sports and developed a strong network of local sports executives. In 2023, he founded a consultancy in Carmel that focuses in part on master planning, strategic planning and business planning, which it has been engaged to do for a massive sports and leisure destination in Portugal. Meanwhile, Bhatt has been a key player on the local organizing committees for the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis, and 2024 U.S. Olympic Swim Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium. His latest roles in the local sports community are co-chair and curator of TEDSports Indianapolis, the first-ever TED event to focus exclusively on sports. Taking place Sept. 9-11 in downtown Indy, it's expected to draw up to 1,000 executives, educators and trendsetters from across the globe for a series of seminars, panels, workshops and curated experiences. There also is a significant networking component, potentially generating new opportunities for the city. In this week's edition of the podcast, Bhatt discusses his upbringing in India, how he was influenced by his grandmother who grew up in pre-independence India, how he became involved in the TED talk ecosystem and how he hopes Indianapolis can take advantage of TEDSports.

After opening up about her abuse at the hands of her husband, Naresh, 28-year-old Mamta Kafle Bhatt disappeared. She had expressed concern for their new baby, who Naresh kept threatening to give away… so it didn't make sense when Naresh started claiming that she had left the baby behind and ran away to “either New York or Texas.” Though her body still has not been located, DNA from blood found on a handheld saw of Naresh's pointed her murder at him. In today's episode, we tackle a fascinating question: What happens when an AI system deployed by a company decides to "resign"—stopping its recommendations or restricting access to its outputs? Can such actions help mitigate reputational or legal risks for organizations? To help us explore this, we're joined by Dr. Umang Bhatt, Assistant Professor and Faculty Fellow at the Center for Data Science at New York University, CDT Non-Resident Fellow, and co-author of the paper When Should Algorithms Resign?: A Proposal for AI Governance, which delves into this thought-provoking concept.

The last time Mamta Kafle spoke to anyone outside of her home was the evening July 29, 2024, when she had a video call with her mother in Nepal. When her mom called Mamta back the next morning at around 11 am, her call went unanswered. According to prosecutors in Prince William County, Virginia, that is because Mamta was dead. Mamta's husband, Naresh Bhatt, claimed she had taken off, leaving both him and their 11-month-old daughter behind. After weeks of public outcry, and multiple search warrants, Naresh Bhatt was arrested on August 22, 2024 on the charge of concealing a dead body.Over the next several months, there were hearings in which the prosecution detailed a horrific case against Bhatt: one that involved him killing his 28-year-old wife in their Manassas Park home and disposing of her body. Then, on December 2, new evidence led prosecutors to charge Bhatt with two more crimes: Defiling a Dead Body and First Degree Murder. Now Naresh awaits trial, while the community wonders if he'll ever reveal where Mamta is.If you have any information regarding Mamta Kafle's disappearance, you are asked to contact the Manassas Park Police Department at 703-361-1136.
