I was honored to chat with Bruce Molsky on the Fiddle Studio Podcast this month. Bruce has a new album out with Darol Anger called Lockdown Breakdown. We talk about getting into Old-Time and sticking with it over the years, trying to sound like your heroes, picking up new tunes, the Berklee American Roots music department, and what he listens for in old recordings. Bruce breaks down singing and fiddling at the same time and how to develop that slippery skill. We hear a track from the new album, Can I Change My Mind.Bruce Molsky has been playing and studying Old-Time music for 50 years, and for much of that time teaching as well. He famously learned fiddle and banjo from folks down in Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina in the 70s, including Tommy Jarrell among others. He's been performing and collaborating ever since, has over dozen great albums to check out, and he teaches Old-Time music at the Berklee School of Music and online at Peghead Nation. You can see Bruce on the BBC TV “Transatlantic Sessions” with Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas, and on “David Holt's State of Music” on PBS. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Banjo legend Tony Trischka joins me on the show this week. I first saw Tony playing with his band Psychograss back in the 90's at a bluegrass festival in Vancouver, and have been following Tony's music ever since. Tony is from Syracuse, and has spent most of his career in the New York area. His early bands included The Down City Ramblers, Country Cooking and Breakfast Special. He also started making really cool solo records in the early 70's that are pretty out-there in the context of what was going on in those days in bluegrass. Those albums definitely nod to traditional bluegrass, but they are also very progressive and experimental. He did alot of touring and recording with his various projects and collaborations over the years, while continuing to teach and compose (he taught a young upstart named Bela Fleck a thing or two in some lessons). After working to progress the banjo and its role in music through his entire career, Tony suddenly has dropped this amazing new project on us that is as traditional as it gets, and has allowed him to mine the depths of the greatness of Earl Scruggs. The new record is called Earl Jam, and was made after he was given hours and hours of tapes of Earl and John Hartford jamming. Unheard stuff that is like a portal into the brain of the greatest banjo innovator of all time. Tony transcribed a hours of that playing, and those transcriptions are what you hear, along with guests like Molly Tuttle and Billy Strings. So let's dive into all this history and hear about the new record - you can get all the latest info on Tony and his upcoming gigs at tonytrischka.com - Enjoy my conversation with Tony Trischka! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. Bluegrass banjo legend Tony Trischka joins us this week to discuss the making of his new album, 'Earl Jam.' He also gives us a mini-masterclass into the world of Earl Scruggs. The story behind 'Earl Jam' is truly remarkable: Upon receiving a USB drive full of never-before-released Earl Scruggs home recordings from the '80s and '90s, Trischka decided to transcribe his favorite moments and solos, note-for-note. His playing of these transcriptions became the foundation for the album, which also features guest spots by Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Brittany Haas, Stuart Duncan and others. It's like hearing a completely new Earl Scruggs record in 2024. Just as memorable as the album are some Trischka's stories about Scruggs and his influence. Somehow, King Curtis Ravi Shankar, Petticoat Junction, Steve Martin, and KFC all get mentioned...and a lot more!   https://www.tonytrischka.com/earl-jam A First Timer's Guide to the Fretboard Summit: https://www.fretboardjournal.com/columns/a-first-timers-guide-to-the-fretboard-summit/ Subscribe to the Fretboard Journal print edition and reserve your copy of Fretboard Journal 54:  https://shop.fretboardjournal.com/products/fretboard-journal-annual-subscription This week's show is sponsored by: StewMac: https://stewmac.sjv.io/R5jvRR (Affiliate link) Izotope: https://www.izotope.com (Use the code FRET10 to save 10%) Stringjoy Strings: https://stringjoy.com (Use the code FRETBOARD to save 10% off your first order) Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar: https://mmguitarbar.com Peghead Nation: https://www.pegheadnation.com (Get your first month free or $20 off any annual subscription with the promo code FRETBOARD at checkout). It is natural that a second generation bluegrass banjo player would have soaked up as much of Earl Scruggs' style on the five string as possible when starting out; it is just as natural that they would push outside of those boundaries of the territory staked out by their pioneering forebears. In Tony Trischka's case, part of this instinct to turn bluegrass on its head early on in his career involved doing things like adding saxophone to an instrumental version of “Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms”, which began with a cacophonous drum solo. Now, we find the habitual trailblazer discovering and reinterpreting never before heard jams from none other than Earl Scruggs himself. It is a bit of a full circle moment, although that is not to say that Tony Trischka ever left the traditional bluegrass fold, either. He is and always was a banjo renaissance man, respected by fans of the roots music avant-garde and the three finger roll alike. In the past couple of years in his now nearly sixty year career, Tony Trischka has been excitedly traveling down an even deeper Earl Scruggs rabbit hole than even he could ever have imagined. Already at work on another book of re-transcriptions of Earl Scruggs' music, which had previously been transcribed by guitar players, a friend named Bob Piekel sent Tony over 200 home recordings of Earl made by John Hartford, which included other greats like Tony Rice, Mac Wiseman and Del McCoury playing for fun over many years in the 1980s and 1990s. These tapes revealed a side of Earl's playing, both in style and repertoire, that no one outside of those small circles of musicians ever heard, including multiple versions of songs like "Gentle on My Mind" and "Here Comes the Bride"; Earl playing blues licks on “Cripple Creek”; syncopations that he used only in those private settings. Brimming with inspiration, Tony Trischka crafted an album based on the John Hartford tapes, bringing in players like Sam Bush, Molly Tuttle, Michael Cleveland, Billy Strings and Mark Schatz, to record his new collection titled Earl Jam: A Tribute To Earl Scruggs. Tony Trischka plays banjo alongside Darol Anger on fiddle Just after Earl Scruggs' 100th birth anniversary, and just ahead of his own 75th trip around the sun, I sat with Tony Trischka at the Earl Scruggs Center following his performance at the Remembering Earl concert, which included the Travelin' McCourys and Jerry Douglas. This episode contains the bulk of that conversation, which was also partially excerpted in our earlier episode titled “An Update, and Two Quick Takes With Tony Trischka and Travis Book”, which includes a portion of Tony's interview that does not appear here. Songs heard in this episode:“John Henry Medley: John Henry/Bonaparte's Retreat/Twists and Turns” by Tony Trischka, from Territory“Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms” by Tony Trischka, from Heartlands, excerpt“Quite Early Morning” by Pete Seeger, from Pete Seeger: The Smithsonian Folkways Collection, excerpt“Dooley” by Tony Trischka, featuring Molly Tuttle and Sam Bush”, from Earl Jam: A Tribute To Earl Scruggs Thank you so much for visiting! We are grateful that you took time to listen, and hope you can help us by spreading awareness of what we are doing. It is as easy as telling a friend and following this podcast on your platform of choice. From there it takes just a moment to give us a top rating and a review. It makes a great difference because the more top reviews and ratings we get, the more visible we become to everyone on those platforms, which means that more people just like you find musical kinship with artists like Tony Trishcka, and legends like Earl Scruggs and Pete Seeger. I would love to hear your comments about that sort of thing and all things Southern Songs and Stories -- you can drop me a line at southernsongsandstories@gmail.com, and I will be glad to reply. Speaking of Earl Scruggs, check out our episode titled The Humble Genius of Earl Scruggs, which is chock full of interviews with bluegrass artists sharing their memories of Earl and how he impacted their lives. I've dug deep into my LP shelves to come up with music from Seldom Scene (1979), the Bluegrass Alliance (1970), and Tony Trischka (1980). Of course, there's some more contemporary bluegrass as well, from the Spinney Brothers, the late Roland White, Sierra Hull, Mike Scott and the Kathy Kallick Band. A song from the HCBB, a tune from Kenny Baker – some great music here.

Is mandolinist Ethan Setiawan 100 years old?! The Indiana-born Setiawan's expert playing will fool you into thinking he's four times his actual age. Thanks to a supportive family and mennonite community, Ethan came to the mandolin and folk music at an early age. His impressive proficiency and technical prowess landed him a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston. There, he was exposed to all different types of music and developed that natural rhythm and groove that only comes with being in musical community. His new instrumental album Gambit was produced by his mentor, the legendary fiddler Darol Anger, best known for being in the original lineup for The David Grisman Quintet. Through Darol, Ethan was able to work on a tradition of his own through music built from a foundation of Bluegrass. He talks about that AND he explains what the bluegrass vocabulary is on the mandolin for dumb-dumbs like me, who do not play music and are not folk scholars. Setiawan is an in-demand side man and band member, and can be seen playing with his band Corner House, Darol Anger, and Tony Trischka among others. They had extra time and wanted to explore after doing some work on their house. They drove through several counties in southern West Virginia that day. Mesmerized by what they saw in their own backyard, they decided, “Let's visit every county in the state!”  Their plan was simple: 1) Visit every county, 2) take a picture of each courthouse & 3) visit an attraction at each stop. Most of the time, they made day trips in order to be back home each night and ready for the next day. Judy created a map which guided their adventures. Every time they visited a county, she colored it in to show their progress. And after taking their first trip in September 2019, they completed their mission by visiting their 55th county (Jefferson) in May 2023.  The couple recommended their favorite local eats as well as scenic places to visit.  “This state is beautiful! Before you spend a penny, spend time here in your own state,” Judy Holland said. “Lost River State Park in Hardy County is an amazing hike. Cranny Crow Overlook allows you to see Virginia and West Virginia at one spot. I also recommend Valley Falls in Marion County. It's absolutely gorgeous.” Read more: https://therealwv.com/2023/06/15/princeton-couple-visits-all-55-counties-in-west-virginia/   #3 – From LIVABILITY – The aerospace/aviation sector is taking flight in Advantage Valley as the region creates more forward-thinking jobs for the up-and-coming workforce. Companies in this Huntington-Charleston metro area comprise a critical link in West Virginia's aviation and aerospace supply chain that includes suppliers such as Constellium, Star Technologies, Level 1 Fasteners, Oerlikon Metco and Carbon Fiber Composites. These companies are producing brackets and precision clamping devices for jet engines, creating solutions to increase engine fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, and specialty fasteners, including studs, screws, nuts and bolts for the aerospace industry. “We have a cluster of companies that support the aerospace/aviation sector, and that's a growing aspect of our economy,” says Terrell Ellis, executive director of Advantage Valley, the economic development organization working to grow and create jobs in the nine-county region.  “We have roughly two times the national average of workers in those clusters with the skills to produce component parts for the aviation sector,” Ellis says. “Aviation/ aerospace is a growing sector for us.” Read more: https://livability.com/wv/charleston/education-careers-opportunity/advantage-valley-wv-is-ready-for-take-off/   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. We live in the age of information. Today you can go online, search for how to play banjos in the style of the Northwest or in North Carolina, and learn it. Traditionally, you had to physically find the people playing and spend some time with them to learn, but not anymore. However, with so much information, it's easy to lose sight of the artists. So make sure you find the people who are actually playing and ensure whatever self-education you're doing is supplemented with actual relationships. There is so much that can be transmitted through the relationship that cannot be transmitted in any other way. In this episode, Max Wareham, a banjo player, shares his journey in music and the lessons he has learned in his mastery process. Your dream in music, banjo, or guitar mastery is valuable, and it's worth spending the time to make it happen.“It's easy to lose sight, but it all comes back to the people and relationships.”Snapshot of the Key Points from the Episode:[02:34] Max shares how he got started and where he is today. How Max shifted his career to become a professional musician.[05:25] Two greatest skillsets that have helped Max navigate his journey.[08:23] How Max incorporated archeology with what he was doing in music.[12:15] Max's most memorable performance/project that he has worked on. [15:46] Things that Max has been doing to engage his fan base.[17:47] How Max navigates the business side of his career.[20:12] Max's definition of working from his happy place. [23:25] Practices that Max does to continue with his learning journey. [25:38] Max's advice to someone who wants to master banjo or guitar.About Max Wareham - Wareham, who studied with banjo masters Tony Trischka and Bill Keith, was introduced as a significant voice on the instrument with the release of Peter Rowan's latest album, Calling You From My Mountain, on which he plays banjo and sings harmony.Prior to joining the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, Wareham taught music extensively, played bass with the psych-pop outfit Sun Parade, and wrote songs and produced several albums under various aliases. Much of his work in bluegrass and education is focused on early bluegrass banjo styles and how they can offer alternative paths to expression within the bluegrass idiom.Resources Mentioned -Rudy Lyle: The Unsung Hero of the Five-String Banjo: https://www.maxwareham.com/product-page/rudy-lyle-the-unsung-hero-of-the-five-string-banjoHow to connect with Max Wareham:Websites: https://www.maxwareham.com/ https://maxwareham.bandcamp.com/Listen to Max's music at: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/max-wareham/1290349278 / https://open.spotify.com/artist/30LXom98tWrl14BKI1xNUIAbout the Host -Belinda Ellsworth is a Speaker, Trainer, Best-Selling Author, and PodcasterShe has been a professional speaker, mover, and shaker for more than 25 years. Lol j/k. I love Maya and this album is perfect. Maya's originally from Lancaster, where she lived and met the members of her old band The Stray Birds. Since the dissolution of the Birds, she's been incredibly prolific with all these solo albums, co-writes and the like. If you're not familiar, this record is a great intro to the genius of one of the greatest musicians on the scene today. The vibes I'm getting on this record are John Prine, Patty Griffin and, of course, Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings. We. Are. Digging. IN!I'm so happy Maya was up for going through this beauty of a record track by track! It's a brilliant collection that subtly knocks you to the ground over the course of its eleven songs. Produced at home with her partner, the much in-demand bassist and producer, Ethan Jodziewicz (The Milk Carton Kids, Sierra Hull, Aoife O'Donovan, Darol Anger, Tony Trischka), Violet Light actually contains a ton of collaborations from Maya's extensive musical community. This includes her own family; her siblings all collaborated for the very first time on tape for the song “Real Time, Real Tears,” about losing a favorite uncle. Yeah, you try not to cry during that one. Anywoo. It feels like a gift to be able to turn these songs over and over, contemplate their meaning, their creation and then be able to talk directly to the brains behind it all. Also, another stringed instrument visionary is 33-year-old Jordan Tice of Nashville. The Hawktail guitarist has a new album of solo songwriting and guitar rags in the tradition of John Fahey.

This week, Mike & Oteil are joined by Banjo virtuoso Tony Trischka, considered among the very best pickers and one of the instrument's top teachers, notably having taught innovative banjo player Béla Fleck. Tony shares the unlikely story of how he was inspired to pick up the banjo as a politically active 12 year old in Syracuse. Tony also talks about hopping in a VW van to attend the first 3-day Bluegrass festival in 1965, racial tensions in the South mixing with hippie culture, and going backstage at a Bob Dylan show at 13. Tony Trischka was born in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1949, and raised in a home filled with music. Trischka fell in love with the banjo by way of the Kingston Trio's 1963 recording of “M.T.A.,” and was able to experience the New York-centered folk revival by trekking to the Newport Folk Festival in the early to mid-'60s. His work with his pal Steve Martin has helped the banjo gain a wider audience and deeper understanding. Trischka's Grammy-nominated album Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular, released in 2007, and Great Big World, from 2014, feature Martin within a mix of veterans and up-and-coming luminaries. He produced Martin's Grammy-nominated Rounder album from 2011, Rare Bird Alert, which touts performances by the Steep Canyon Rangers, Paul McCartney and the Dixie Chicks. His forthcoming album, Shall We Hope, is a visionary exploration of Civil War history featuring an all-star cast—from Michael Daves and Maura O'Connell to the Femmes, Catherine Russell, Guy Davis, the actor John Lithgow and many others.  In many ways, Trischka's collaborators join him to pay homage to an architect of progressive bluegrass—an invaluable pioneer who absorbed the slings and arrows of roots traditionalists and proved that acoustic music could accommodate imagination and individualism.   This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. The hot banjo pickin that came before my guest. Country style picking by the likes of Bill Emerson and his Virginia Mountaineers whose fingers were on fire playing rainbow blues. This music was cut in the moment, no multiple takes just burn and prey -it was and always will be that leap into the world of improvisation that led to my guest today who is another link in that chain. A chain that consists Merle Watson who along with Doc toured this country with reckless abandon playing beer taverns and church picnics and the Telluride Bluegrass festival singing about the days of wine and roses with a Return to Forever and ever and Ever. My guest has pierced through the modern labeling of music by continually putti g himself in unique musical settings- knowing that he might flub a few notes but create the highest creative art form which is "continual spontaneity" be with Dave Mathews or Zakir Hussain or Tony Trischka. Night in and Night out playing multiple chorus' like the fiddler Scottie Stoneman who ignored the 12 bars because he had something to say. It's like Big Ben Banjo mastered by Rudy Van Gelder or Paul Whiteman or Eddie Peabody. How are you going to tell your story? How does your storytelling separate you from the 5 million of banjo Pickers out there. My guest has many chapters and many stories in his career. Up till now he has played with everyone from Stanley Clarke to Jerry Garcia from Hobo Jim to his Flecktones. He has sought out new musical opportunities because music is the universal language- a cosmic exercise measuring the tenacity and spirit of both man and his maker. 056: Aaron WhitbyGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, September 16th of 2020 Music is not content, it’s connection.Today we are blessed to have Aaron Whitby with us. But first here’s a random thought: Music used to be important. And it was a haven for the self important. It still sort of is, but musicians no longer make the same level of impact economically or culturally. It’s not quite running on fumes, but nowadays most of us would be happy for musicmaking to be merely sustainable. Some might even say that being sustainable is better than being important. But guess what? Back in that golden age when music was quote “really important”, it was not sustainable then either. What I mean is that we take our literal life in our hands when we choose to set about making music. It’s a risk, man. We’re actually getting closer to sustainability now, you could say it’s a beautiful time (aside from it being the apocalypse). Most of the time music works out ok if you work hard enough, make decent choices and keep your priorities more or less in line. But it’s not a magic ticket to some rarefied kind of existence where you get to hold yourself above other people. I mean, in America you can run your business however you see fit, but there are two sides to this coin: you find the fan who worships at the altar of the musician they love, and the musician who sometimes seems like they might just be seeking to be worshiped above all else - whose ego may be running the show.I won’t name any of them, but you know the trope. You probably also know that it’s not that simple. Not all musicians are provocateurs, serial abusers, pedophiles, womanizers, drug smugglers, tax cheaters or general get-somethin-for-nuthin types. Nor are we all deadbeats, addicts, vagrants and underearners. Most of the time we start out just wanting to play. Not knowing where the train is actually going, we chose to follow the energy and inspiration to wherever it may lead. But when an artist gets a little traction and starts working with investors (and that’ll be most of the artists you’ve heard of, barring almost none), oftentimes the investor will only stay happy if the artist continually generates energy around themselves, in order to generate attention for the music and get the numbers up so that the investor can profit. It’s not just a label or what have you, but it’s all the members of the artist’s team whose livelihood (and future) depends on those same numbers. It becomes a self-perpetuating cycle: artist “just wants to make music”, gets some help in the form of a band, production team, label etcetera. Then the pressure starts to multiply. Every person added to the team is a new set of mouths to feed and before you know it, the artist has to become a factory of attention-getting tactics. Only some of which are related to creating excellent and satisfying music. They have to meet those numbers or the show falls apart. It’s an obligation entirely separate from the creative process. Folks wonder “where everything went wrong” but it’s part of the design. Basically, the music business will turn you into a pirate, and if you don’t want that to happen then you’re probably better off digging into what you’re really after and why. And if what you want is quote-unquote “real music” then keep listening because today we’re talking to a live one.(Which is good, because I’m about talked out here. )The point is Music is literally the most important thing for us here at the show. You just have to take the music seriously and not take yourself too seriously. The folks on here tend to really bring it.[Photo by Michael Weintrob]So. Aaron Whitby:is an award-winning record producer, composer/songwriter, pianist, engineer and educator born and raised in London, England and a longtime resident of Brooklyn, New York.Whitby is best known for his work with longtime collaborator Martha Redbone, who we heard from last week. Whitby and Redbone are recipients of many awards and are currently developing a musical commissioned by the Public Theater in NYC.[Photo by Molly Magnusson]Mentored by Ohio Player/Funkadelic Walter ‘Junie’ Morrison, Whitby has recorded with; Natalie Cole, George Clinton, Randy Brecker, Lisa Fischer, Tony Trischka, John McEuen, Raul Midon, Neil Sedaka and Rodney Holmes among many others. He has performed with Nona Hendryx, Brian Jackson, Vernon Reid of Living Colour, Ben Sollee, Mino Cinelu and Brooklyn Raga Massive among many others. He and Martha have been stacking up awards and commissions. That’s ongoing. But with Cousin From Another Planet, his debut album as a frontman, Whitby comes full circle to his jazz and funk roots pulling together an amazing cast of friends to realize his musical vision, as described by Greg Tate, “a funk-da-fied jam session feel undergirding tight, knotty jazz-smart progressions”. With tunes inspired by the animated energy and profound innocence of his young son, humorous lyrics that celebrate empathy and empowerment and musicians given the freedom to take the music wherever it feels good. According to Tate, this album is “one of this era’s hardiest re-dedications and festival-tent revival of soulful and exploratory jam-gnocity.” Cousin From Another Planet live onstage is a music and visual experience accompanied by a video artshow by VJ Lady Firefly (who has also worked with Dave Chappelle and The Roots) to capture the colorful, cartoonish and movement-inspired worldview.Like I said, we got a live one here. Toy Heart with Tom Power (A Podcast About Bluegrass)

Host Tom Power speaks with progressive banjo legend Tony Trischka at the home of his friend and former student, Béla Fleck. Trischka and Power talk about the time he saw and met Bob Dylan when no one was sure how to pronounce his name, and when he went to the first bluegrass festival weekend. An innovator on an archetypically traditional instrument, Trischka also discusses how he fuses jazz and experimental music with bluegrass, the intersection of the folk boom and bluegrass, and the time he played "progressive" banjo in front of Ralph Stanley. The episode covers ground from his recording debut with the band Country Cooking, to his first solo album, Bluegrass Light, having had Bill Monroe over for dinner when he was a kid, his teaching Béla, to carving out a life in acoustic music (and about what the term "bluegrass-adjacent music" means, too).

Toy Heart with Tom Power (A Podcast About Bluegrass)

On this episode of Toy Heart, Béla Fleck talks to host Tom Power from his home studio and for the first time, he tells his story in bluegrass. Fleck started out in New York hearing Earl Scruggs for the first time, learning from Tony Trischka, and then making the decision to go (new) south to learn from J.D. Crowe. He auditioned for Bill Monroe, but eventually found 'his people' and joined New Grass Revival. He tells of mistakes the band made along the way, the hard decision to leave that band and start the Flecktones, recording with his hero Earl Scruggs, and how he found his way back to bluegrass after all. He also unveils the one change he thinks anyone can make to their practicing to become a better musician.

Tony Trischka's list of collaborators includes Pete Seeger, Bela Fleck, Earl Scruggs, and Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, so it's no surprise that he has been called “perhaps the most influential banjo player in the roots music world.” His 2007 album Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular earned him his first Grammy nomination, as well as awards for Banjo Player of the Year, Recorded Event of the Year, and Instrumental Album of the Year from the International Bluegrass Music Association. In this edition, of Music Is My Life, he discusses his communist father, his love of "MTA," and auditioning for Bruce Springsteen.

Grant held the guitar chair in the legendary David Grisman Quintet for six years, and has worked alongside artists like Edgar Meyer, Steve Martin, Tony Trischka, Darol Anger, Dominick Leslie, Alex Hargreaves and Joe K. Walsh. Grant’s performed all over North America and Europe, including Carnegie Hall, Montreal Jazz Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Bonnaroo. Definitely one of the most intense and introspective interviews I’ve done. Grant and I dig really deep in the second half of this call when we talk about everything from happiness… struggling when it comes to asking for help… feeling undeserving… finding your musical voice, getting comfortable in your own skin, and more. Truly one of the most genuine guys you’ll have the pleasure of getting to know. Twenty years ago, Lluís Gómez heard Banjo Paris Session, an album featuring the playing of Jean-Marie Redon and Bill Keith. It completely changed this Spanish musician's life. Gómez would go on to obsess over the five-string banjo, eventually tracking down lessons with Keith, Tony Trischka and Pete Wernick. These days, Gómez is considered the “Spanish King of the Five-String Banjo.” He's a prolific performer, educator and music promoter, bringing a distinctly American music to new audiences in Europe. On this episode, he tells us about the state of banjo in Spain today, his excellent new record Dotze contes, the instruments that he loves and much more. In the first half of this week's Snacky Tunes, Greg and Darin catch up with Tracy Jane Young and Josh Grinker, the creative forces behind Kings County Imperial, a reinterpreted Central Chinese restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Rather than striving strictly for "authenticity," the menu is all about making an emotional connection between the food on the plate and the people who made it. After the break, we have musical guest Michael Daves, whose two-album set Orchids and Violence is out now on Nonesuch Records. Both discs of Orchids and Violence are produced by Daves and have identical track listings of mostly traditional bluegrass songs. The first features straightforward interpretations of them and was recorded live to tape in a 19th-century church by Daves and a band of roots-music innovators: bassist Mike Bub, violinist Brittany Haas, mandolinist Sarah Jarosz, and Punch Brothers banjo player Noam Pikelny. The second disc was recorded in Daves's home studio and includes bass, drums, and electric guitar, mostly played by Daves, and takes a raw, experimental rock approach to the same old-time material. Both discs were mixed by Vance Powell (Jack White, Kings of Leon, Danger Mouse) and have a special guest appearance from Tony Trischka on cello banjo, and Daves's wife Jessi Carter played bass on the electric disc.
