Beiersdorf has put forward their earnings report for the fiscal year, presenting a reliable start with consistent initial results. As relayed on the earnings call, CEO Vincent Warnery communicated to investors about the significant role of their primary brands in the company's development. He said, "NIVEA and our Derma brands were the main driving forces here, both with double-digit growth figures in the first 3 months." This performance provides solid evidence of the brands' continuing appeal and sets a viable trajectory for the remainder of the year.During 2024, Beiersdorf has experienced steady growth. The Consumer Business segment showed a 10% expansion in the first quarter, which is an indication of the company's market position. Beiersdorf's overall sales growth of 7.3% further demonstrates its business solidity.NIVEA, Beiersdorf's primary brand, has experienced substantial global growth, with a 12.6% increase in organic sales during the first quarter of 2024. In parallel, the Face Care and Sun segments have seen growth rates of 12% and 23%, respectively. Additionally, the Derma brands, Eucerin and Aquaphor, have manifested a growth of 10.2%. Beiersdorf's luxury line, La Prairie, has demonstrated a 14% increase within the Chinese market.Consumer trends reveal increased demand for skincare and beauty products. Even though the US market experienced a slow start in Q1, there are signs of potential recovery and an increase in market share for Beiersdorf. This consumer-focused approach has led to growth in the Chinese market for brands like NIVEA, Chantecaille, and La Prairie.Moving forward, Beiersdorf plans to implement initiatives and strategic investments to extend its market presence, as stated on the earnings call. NIVEA is expected to profit from the expansion of the LUMINOUS 630 ingredient across new product lines and markets. By late summer 2024, Beiersdorf plans to incorporate innovative epigenetic technologies within its Derma brands. Additionally, La Prairie plans to maintain its growth momentum into the second half of 2024 with new line extensions and a reinforced e-commerce strategy. The market presence of NIVEA and Eucerin is expected to be strengthened as part of a strategic capital allocation plan, which includes potential dividend increases and future share buybacks. The proactive steps taken by Beiersdorf in brand development and product innovation have provided the firm with a steady start to 2024, as acknowledged to investors on the earnings call. The combination of these business strategies with evolving consumer trends creates a practical way forward for the company. While the Q1 2024 performance shows promise, the outlook for the remainder of the year is guardedly optimistic based on Beiersdorf's own projections. This is a public episode. We've got the French-culture report AND a bunch of glorious Thingies from Jamie Beck, whose book An American in Provence: Art, Life and Photography is out tomorrow, just in time for holiday wish-listing. Related: We take a min. to talk about hate-gifting, sparked by some of the requests we've gotten in recent years. You really have to see Jamie's book An American in Provence to believe it (and to live vicariously through it, obviously). Jamie's Thingies include Dries Van Noten refillable lipstick in Antwerp Vermeil, good lighting (via a soft ring light, natural sunlight, or a fridge) and a chic phone case, cooking over a fire with an Alice Waters–approved egg spoon, Westman Atelier's Super Loaded Tinted Highlight in Peau de Rosé and Chantecaille's Liquid Lumière, and Savon de Marseille for stain-removal (related: Jenny Walton on IG). For some very French gift-giving, she loves anything from Buly 1803. For all your gifting quandries, hit us up at at 833-632-5463, podcast@athingortwohq.com, or @athingortwohq. This week: getting personal with Kate McCleary, a cruelty free and environmentally conscious, hair and makeup artist. Based in Melbourne, Kate understands the life of a mua is anything but straight and narrow. She starts off by telling us about a photo on her studio wall that is over nine years old and still one of her collection favs, boasting the importance of authentic collaborations, and why now is the time to ditch kits tested on animals and proudly join the cruelty-free artist community. Whether you're just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future podcasts below. KEY TAKEAWAYS: CRUELTY FREE. If you don't already check the fine print on your products, today is the day you start. I want to be clear on the definitions, as it can be tricky to navigate the cosmetic industry when trying to be cruelty free (and vegan!). Cruelty free means that the product was developed without any tests on animals. Whereas Vegan means that the product does not include any animal-derived ingredients. Making a conscious effort to choose cruelty free products from early in her career, and as an avid vegan enthusiast, Kate understands how challenging it can be. Having an open mind, doing your research and supporting a brand whose ethos is the same as yours is key. Kate's go-to research hub is crueltyfreekitty.com, an American site with a large database of cruelty-free cosmetics. Her fav brands include: Illamasqua, Charlotte Tilbury, Hourglass, Chantecaille, RMS, Kevyn Aucoin, plus more. “Over the years I've waved goodbye to some of my most beloved brands. Many have been bought out by larger non-cruelty free cosmetic houses and even more have started selling in China where animal testing is mandatory. However, as a vegan, I believe we can live our life without harming others, so that is exactly what I do. Plus, our industry is rapidly changing, so you have to be on top of it to truly be able to service your clients.”Kate McCleary DESIGNING A LOOK. As artists, we crave that creative flair in our work. Whether it's testing a new kit or being given free reigns on a shoot. Consulting a new client is quite similar to the service space of tailoring. Kate thrives in creative opportunities where she gets to design a look. With her bridal work, she can be quite creative - often working with pops of colour. It can be rare in our industry to bring the whole look to life - the hair, makeup, clothes and styling, something she loves being part of. “When you look after the bride's hair and makeup, you get that really cohesive look and you're able to look after them for the whole day” says Kate. Her recommendation for those styling a full look? Practice, practice, practice! Practice on so many different types of people, different skin types, body shapes and hair types. Variety is key and whoever you can rope in from your circle to practice on, the better! ZERO TO ONE-HUNDRED. Are you chasing that moment that will catapult your career into stardom? Take it from zero to one-hundred? For Kate, appearing at the ‘One Fine Day' wedding fair really skyrocketed her bridal career. “I had a stall and did the hair and makeup for the runway models”, said Kate. The aesthetic and creative vibe really needs to match you as an artist and the type of audience you're interested in attracting. Finding a way to get more clients can be challenging in an oversaturated market, however the more in-tune you are with the people surrounding you, the more opportunities will present themselve. Kate also suggests ripping the bandaid off and just doing what you have to do to upskill and expand your business. Her top tip? Invest in a good mannequin with shoulders and ears!

Sylvie Chantecaille has no illusions about the commercial difficulties presented by the coronavirus pandemic. "Basically our business went dead overnight," she said of her eponymous prestige beauty company, Chantecaille, where she serves as president and CEO. And whereas her industry competitors anticipate a run back to stores once the world-spanning practices of social distancing soften, Chantecaille isn't so sure. "Before we could figure out 'Neiman's will buy this, Nordstrom will buy that, Saks will buy this.' Now we have no idea. We don't know what they're going to buy, if they can buy, if there's anyone to buy. And if they're going to be there!" Chantecaille said on the Glossy Beauty Podcast. She added that the beauty business is now focusing on survival, and assumed that its revenue forecast for 2020 is down 30% (the company doubled its retail sales in 2018 to $200 million, and has grown since then, according to Chantecaille). At the same time, the company's forced focus on e-commerce has seen that side of the business mushroom. "We did last month the amount of money we do in six months normally," Chantecaille said. That focus concerns Asian markets in particular, where the company is working with KOLs in China and doing direct videos on Taobao. Chantecaille talked about how she considers Amazon "the death of retail," her ideas for Chantecaille's future product direction and how people want to wear makeup even just for video calls.
Get ready for a beauty business masterclass. Sylvie Chantecaille is a pioneer in the beauty industry, from personalization to biotech to environmental causes. Sylvie shares how, with her namesake brand, she applies scientific innovation of plant based stem cells to amplify performance of natural ingredients, and how her global brand has become a platform for her philanthropic efforts and to educate consumers on how they can become socially responsible citizens.
