Esteemed beauty marketer Michelle Miller knows a thing or two about a successful TikTok strategy. Miller served as CMO of K-18 during its gangbuster rise and 2023 strategic acquisition by Unilever. Her CV also includes Kosas, Too Faced and, as of January, CMO of Vegamour hair care. “[TikTok has] an algorithm that is able to democratize beauty in a way that makes it a lot more accessible [to the average consumer],” Miller said. “With the platform being so uncertain, it's emotionally hard for brands that have invested so much time into creator communities, into content on Tiktok. And most of all, it's really, really hard for creators that have built their entire living and livelihoods on the platform.” Miller joined Glossy podcast hosts Lexy Lebsack and Sara Spruch-Feiner (23:21), plus Glossy managing editor Tatiana Pile, to discuss the latest movement in TikTok's ongoing sell-or-be-banned legal predicament and what it means for the beauty industry. As previously reported by Glossy, concern over TikTok's algorithm and its ability to influence Americans through disinformation campaigns, as well as the large amount of data being collected by ByteDance about Americans, are the top concerns of those behind the ban. This conversation goes back to 2020 when President Trump said he planned to ban the app, but it wasn't until TikTok added commerce with TikTok Shop in September of 2023 that momentum rebuilt. Then-President Biden signed a law into effect in April of 2024 that gave TikTok owner Bytedance a window to sell the majority of the business to an American owner or be banned from being downloaded in the U.S. Despite numerous legal challenges, including one heard by the Supreme Court, Bytedance unsuccessfully fought the legislation, and the app briefly went dark in January before garnering an extension by President Trump. On April 4, TikTok received a second extension to find a buyer until June 19. Until then, the app is safe. However, alongside a developing trade war with China, TikTok's fate hangs in the balance with a meaningful impact on the beauty and wellness industries. “It really puts into place — not only for big brands in beauty, but also for smaller brands that are just getting started — [the questions] of: ‘How do you future-proof your brand? How do you work virality today, and what's next if TikTok does go away in 75 days?” Miller said. Also included in this episode is a news rundown on the top stories of the week. The team discusses President Trump's escalating global tariffs, Beyoncé-founded Cécred's splashy launch into Ulta Beauty and the latest celebrity beauty brand to hire bankers to explore an exit, ahead.
In this episode of Skin Anarchy, host Dr. Ekta sits down with Conor Begley, Chief Strategy Officer of CreatorIQ, to explore how the creator economy is transforming beauty and adjacent industries. With years of experience co-founding Tribe Dynamics and now leading CreatorIQ's strategic efforts, Conor breaks down the critical role influencers play in driving brand success, product development, and marketing innovation.Conor shares how the beauty industry became a leader in influencer marketing, with 96% of content generated organically. Brands like NYX, Too Faced, and Anastasia Beverly Hills have harnessed influencer buzz to build momentum, leading to major acquisitions. Authentic relationships, rather than transactional posts, remain key to creating lasting impact and trust among consumers.Conor highlights the importance of metrics like Earned Media Value (EMV) and share of voice versus market share to measure influence effectively. He explains how influencer mentions often predict brand trajectory, showing how buzz precedes sales and indicates growth or decline. For brands scaling their influencer programs, tools like CreatorIQ provide automation, data analysis, and competitor benchmarking to streamline campaign management. The conversation also dives into emerging platforms like TikTok Shop, the impact of new features on direct shopping, and the need for brands to remain nimble across evolving channels. Whether you're an indie startup or a legacy brand, Conor's insights emphasize the power of authentic, well-nurtured creator relationships to drive long-term success. To learn more about CreatorIQ, visit their website and social media. When Jerrod Blandino and Jeremy Johnson first launched Too Faced back in 1998, the beauty startup world was a whole different game. Over the decades, the co-founders powered through all the big changes in the beauty industry, from the rise of Sephora to the onset of the influencer era. After Estée Lauder Companies acquired Too Faced in 2016, Blandino and Johnson are at it again with a new company and two brand launches. Their new makeup brand, Polite Society, was unveiled on August 27 with Ulta Beauty as its retail partner. It joins the roster of Blandino and Johnson's new parent company, Toy Box Brands, which also recently unveiled jewelry-cleaner brand Diamond Drunk. On this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, the business partners share the history of their careers with Too Faced, as well as all the details on the new beauty brand, including the new products, the clean ingredients focus and the brand positioning. As Estée Lauder's first-ever Chief Data Officer, Jane Lauder is combining data science with creativity to fuel the growth of the company. Jane has worked at Estée Lauder for 26 years – 24 of which she spent working on the brand and marketing aspects of the business. While working as the Global Brand President of Clinique, Jane saw the power of data to drive all aspects of the business, motivating her to transition into her current role. Estée Lauder Companies is one of the world's leading manufacturers and marketers of luxury skincare, makeup, fragrance, and hair care products. It encompasses a house of about 30 brands including their flagship brand Estée Lauder, as well as other brands such as Clinique, Crème de la Mer, MAC, Jo Malone, Aveda, Le Labo, Bobbi Brown, Origins, Dr.Jart+, Too Faced cosmetics, and more. The beauty giant was founded by Jane's grandmother, Estée Lauder, over 75 years ago. Before there were data and analytics to pull from, Estée Lauder would gather information about potential consumers by analyzing women's bathrooms, paying close attention to details such as décor and the colors of their tiles. She then used this information to design aspirational product packaging that would elevate its surroundings. “In the beginning, we were a one-woman research company, and that one woman was Estée Lauder.”Today the company has a wealth of digital and in-store data. Jane and her team use this data to understand consumers' aspirations better, gain insight into how different consumers use their products, and spot emerging trends in the cosmetic industry. This information helps them to respond to trends and tailor their products and messaging to meet consumers' unique needs and aspirations. As Estée Lauder's Chief Data Officer, Jane's biggest obstacle resides in deciding how to best utilize the ample data she has access to. Another obstacle lies in determining how to strike a balance between satisfying consumer needs today and investing in the future of the company. “You want to be able to use the data you have to create incredible opportunities, but also think about how to unlock the data for the future, and how to set up the foundational data sets, and data containers, if you will, to be able to create this quick analysis of the future.” Jane believes the future is promising for those seeking roles as data scientists within the cosmetics industry. The cosmetics industry is teeming with opportunities to connect with consumers and make a difference.

In this episode, my guest Jaclyn Johnson, sharing some secrets on how she built a multi-millon dollar brand. Talking Points: What inspired you to create Create&Cultivate? How did your high-paying job at IAC, the corporate parent today of companies Tinder and Match, play a role in your success as an entrepreneur? What was your emotional state when you got laid off from your job in Los Angeles; how did you get out of that hole? Do you believe in the motto, fake it till you make it, how did some white lies help you create a multi-million dollar brand? Only 5% of VC partners are women; what inspired you to launch New Money Ventures, and what are your goals for this fund? How's the way we do business evolving; are we on the brink of a shift in the way money flows? What makes your best-selling book, The Work Party, different from other self-help business books? Guest Jaclyn Johnson @jaclynrjohnson @createcultivate A serial entrepreneur with two exits, angel investor, best selling author and host of a top business podcast, Jaclyn is redefining the meaning of work for a new generation of women. An entrepreneur who started both her companies with a laptop and an idea and grew them from self-funded side projects into multi-million dollar businesses and nationally known and recognized brands. How? By trusting my gut, seeing the whitespace, seizing the opportunity all with an unnerving amount of drive, purpose and persistence. I've launched and sold two companies before the age of 35. My latest company, Create & Cultivate, recognized a gap in conversations, resources, events and community for female millennial entrepreneurs and small business owners. Now, Create & Cultivate is a cult favorite brand hosting multiple events each year, a community of 1 million plus women, a line at Target, a top business podcast & more. I've had the honor and privilege of interviewing such pioneers of industry like Chelsea Handler, Issa Rae, Meghan Markle, and Martha Stewart, to name a few. And now, I want to pay it forward to burgeoning entrepreneurs, self starters and women with my fund, New Money Ventures. We've all heard that our eyebrows frame our entire face, but so many of us neglect to invest in them. This week, Jackie Robinson and Deanna Irwin of RawwBeauty join me to discuss all things brows. Episode At A Glance: This week, Jackie Robinson and Deanna Irwin join me to share the importance of well-kept brows. Jackie is the owner of Rawwbeauty, a beauty studio located in downtown Homewood. Rawwbeauty offers permanent makeup, a variety of brow and lash treatments, dermaplaning, and special occasion hair and makeup. Jackie and Deanna shared how transformative a brow treatment can be, what treatments they recommend, as well as their favorite brow products. Who Is Jackie Robinson? After working for MAC Cosmetics, NARS, and Too Faced for almost a decade, Jackie launched Rawwbeauty in 2010 with the dream of providing high-quality one-of-a-kind makeup artistry to Alabama. After years of making her clients feel like their best selves with makeup, she wanted to expand Rawwbeauty to make her clients feel beautiful in their everyday lives. Therefore, in 2016 she added skincare, lash extensions, and permanent makeup to the list of services Rawwbeauty offers. Jackie loves being able to work with women all over the Southeast and making each client feel beautiful! Who Is Deanna Irwin? Deanna graduated from Auburn University with a degree in nutrition and food science in 2007. After graduating, she worked in a salon in Montgomery, Alabama doing mineral body wraps, facials, and EB pro foot baths. During these seven years, Deanna had her three children. After becoming a mom, she wanted to document her children's lives so she became an avid photographer. After moving to Birmingham to continue her photography career in the wedding industry, she crossed paths with Jackie. The two have become close friends over the years, and Deanna knew working with Jackie at Rawwbeauty was the best place to be.
