Founded in 2005, NuFACE is the global leader in at-home microcurrent beauty devices and skincare products. With 17 years of driving expertise in microcurrent technology, the brand has seen consistent growth and in 2021 surpassed $150 million in retail sales. Yet they still have to keep reinventing themselves. In this episode of The Irresistible Factor, Kristi sits down with CEO Jessica Hanson and Co-Founder Tera Peterson to talk about the highs and lows of steering a female-led family business with such a deep history. They take a look at the brand's focus on education, innovation, and community and find out how Jessica and Tera are approaching some of the unique challenges that come with the territory in the emerging beauty tech space. Through category-defining products, proven results, endorsements from skincare professionals, and celebrity clientele, NuFACE has gained a growing base of loyal customers. If you want to know more about the value of partnership, user-driven innovation, and utilizing social media platforms to market and educate consumers, you won't want to miss this inspiring conversation with NuFACE executive powerhouses, Jessica Hanson and Tera Peterson. “We don't look outside. We only look at ourselves. Yes, we know what everybody else is doing, just because it's fascinating, [but we] don't base innovation off of what they're doing.”
[Glams: there will be mature discussions in today's episode — discretion is advised!] Today's fabulous guest — just in time for spooky season — is Jessica Lowe: actress, writer, comedian and star of Minx on HBO Max and the new movie Cursed Friends on Paramount Plus! Jess is one of our own: obsessed with skincare, devices and learning all the tricks of the trade when it comes to makeup. (She requested Kevyn Aucoin's book when she was 12. We love to see it.) We're picking her brain about portraying bronzed '70s goddess Bambi on Minx, her go-to on-camera makeup products, what treatments she tends to avoid as an actress, and the importance of intimacy coordinators on a set like hers. When reviewing the beauty landscape, there are increasingly fewer companies that are built as family businesses. Today, the market skews heavily toward building a company and selling it at a faster-than-ever clip. Though deal flow continues to be hot, NuFace's founders Carol Cole and her daughters, Tera Peterson and Kim Morales, are focused on building their brand while keeping themselves at the helm for as long as possible. "My mom, my sister and I started NuFace back in 2005. My mom's been an esthetician since the 1980s. After business school, I decided to go to esthetician school. We created our first device out of our family home in Leucadia, which is a little beach community of Encinitas [outside] San Diego," said Peterson on the latest episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. Since founding the brand 17 years ago, NuFace has sold over 4 million devices. Peterson added that NuFace is up 24% in sell-through for 2022. The device category is typically a difficult market to create ongoing value, but NuFace has also avoided the fate of competitors, which saw initial buzz and interaction with their brands but never saw the repeat purchase. "The innovation is key; that's where typical devices fail," she said. "They go, 'OK, I'm gonna do X and then I'm going to launch this completely non-related other device." Like, what are you? Are you cleansing? Are you microdermabrasion? It really confuses people, and that's where other devices have really struggled. They don't stay true to themselves."

You know I'm a big believer in skincare, it is my business after all. But I'm a huge proponent of adding high tech devices to my home spa routine to take my results to the next level. This week we're talking about career ruts and evolving in your career, about Bridget Everett's quietly stunning performance in "Somebody Somewhere," about the unexpected beauty of the song "Lady" as sung by Teddy Pendergrass, the new Bill Cosby doc, new-to-us beauty products from Dr. Dennis Gross along with a cult-fave French retinol, and the NuFace facial toning device. We're also recommending pants by Gravel & Gold, not recommending Brooklyn playgrounds, and we're reading your show reviews (thanks so much!). It is no surprise that the beauty industry is focused on inventing the latest cutting-edge technology to fight aging. There are invasive and non-invasive procedures that are available which makes it possible to obsess over that quest for the best anti-aging treatment. Tera Peterson, Co-Founder and CEO at NuFACE, chats with Hello Beauty host, Joyce Platon, and shares how we can delay the signs of aging without undergoing botox by using a microcurrent device or receiving microcurrent facial. Just like the muscles in other parts of our body, our face needs to be "exercised" for toning and lifting. Tera explains that with botox, our muscles atrophy and we must avoid that since it will cause our face to sag. As a living testament to the wonderful benefits of NuFACE microcurrent devices, Tera admits to not needing botox yet. In this episode, Tera not only shares her knowledge in microcurrent facials but also how NuFACE has been the pioneer in facial toning devices to prevent the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and what exciting plans they have in their sleeve.FOLLOW NuFACENuFACE's WebsiteNuFACE's InstagramNuFACE's FacebookFOLLOW TERA VALDEZ-PETERSONTera's InstagramFOLLOW HELLO BEAUTYHello Beauty's InstagramHello Beauty's FacebookHello Beauty's YouTubeFOLLOW JOYCE PLATONJoyce Platon's Instagram
“What I was cleaning my house with was cleaner than what I was putting on my face. I had my head in the sand like a lot of people.” — my guest, April Gargiulo, on the genesis of her natural, performance-driven skincare line: Vintner’s Daughter//April and I discuss how her background in Napa Valley’s wine making process, allowed her to see this gap in the skincare market – she took this knowledge and molded it into a product to help people around the world achieve their best skin. The coveted Vintner's Daughter serum and essence transforms skin and hearing the backstory behind the 22 natural ingredients, it's all clear why this works as well as it does. April never compromises quality for profit, which is what makes her totally unique in today's beauty industry.April’s journey with skincare dates back to developing cystic acne in high school and giving every luxury product a try. After some time she started to develop her first product (the process was rocky pitching one SKU) but she stuck to her North Star and successfully created products that continue to sell out within days of being restocked. I LOVED talking to April and getting to know what has inspired this game-changing, plant-powered skincare and I know you will too.Products/Resources Mentioned: Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum, Vintner’s Daughter Active Treatment Essence, Alpyn Creamy Bubbling Cleanser, NuFace (electrical stimulation of facial muscles), Face Gym , Endermologie Body Treatment (Spa Radiance) Infiorie solid fragrance, Brother Vellies (April's shoe obsession), CAP Beauty , Onda BeautyStay in touch with me: @brookedevardFollow April & Vintner's Daughter Join the Naked Beauty Community on IG: @nakedbeautyplanetRate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on Apple Thanks for all the love and support. This week's guest Larry "NuFace" Compton. NuFace is known by many as the guy on Instagram who seems to have just about every classic Hip-Hop album (and the merch to match) ever! He is in the process of building out his own museum to celebrate Hip-Hop culture. In addition to sharing stories about his journey from Detroit to Atlanta, he also talks about the cool moments he has shared with some of your favorite artists. 1:00 NuFace talks about leaving Detroit and coming to Atlanta for college (Clark Atlanta University). Like so many others, Freaknik was a big reason why wound up there. He also talks about how his father influenced him as an artist. NuFace then reveals that he fell into collecting things via neighborhood friends going away to jail and their parents giving him their toys because they knew "he'd take care of them." 5:30 NuFace actually remembers the first things he collected. Salt-N-Pepa, 2 Live Crew, Too $hort and Dr. Dre got him started. Mainly because of the explicit album covers and content and the attention it drew. He also credits his mother for not throwing his things away when he left for school. 9:45 NuFace talks about how he began forging relationships with his favorite artists by presenting them with tapes and other artifacts they don't even have anymore. From this, he plans to open a museum celebrating Hip-Hop history. 15:00 NuFace talks about how he takes care of all of his precious cargo. He also talks about if he thinks more people go back to buying physical copies of music and how more artists should consider producing more physical copies of their music. 20:45 NuFace says he has a "Clark Kent shoe closet" worth of Hip-Hop collectibles when asked how much space he thinks his things will take up. He also speaks on how it's actually hard to have company over for dinner or chill because people are always distracted by his collection and want a tour. 24:40 NuFace talks about how people can help support his vision of building a museum. He also shares details on his upcoming A3C event. 29:40 NuFace talks about the time he got the late Nipsey Hussle to sign his "Victory Lap" cassette and how the artist remembered him the next time he saw him. 34:00 NuFace lists his bucket list of items he wants to add to his collection or get signed. He also shares a hilarious story about trying to get DMX to sign his "Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of my Blood" album at Art Basel in Miami. The dishwasher drama continues when Gerard gets mad about the botched installation of The Pepper's latest appliance. The Peppers both turn a bit red in the face, but thankfully Jessie has a skin cream for pretty much everything. Don't forget to leave us a review on iTunes, and send us a tweet if you have something to share while you listen! QUICK BITES: Gerard gives some good advice for how you should react if anyone ever throws a trash can at you. When it comes to arguing, Jessie likes to get into it and then get past it while Gerard usually prefers to just get out of the room. The Peppers break their own rules and talk about the unresolved fight that they had the night before recording. Our introverted and extroverted natures make for different communication styles, particularly when processing through a conflict. We decide to keep the newspaper swatting to a minimum after remembering from Episode 27 that we DO have neighbors who like to call the cops. Gerard and Jessie learn the difference between being an argument escalator and argument elevator… Stay tuned for Jessie’s conversation about this with Liz Bohannon on our spin-off mini-series called The Perfect Wife. (Coming Thanksgiving 2017!) Hear our original skincare conversation about sunscreen in Episode 34, and then listen in as Jessie makes yet another request for Gerard to start taking better care of himself. The Peppers recognize the flaws on their skin as giving them a nice healthy dose of humility. (And an opportunity to rub medicated cream on each other.) Gray hair and aging are revisited as mortality is discussed... Jessie gives a quick rundown of her skincare values, and professes the benefits of her favorite vibrating tools. (Clarisonic Mia, NuFace, and Quip!) TRIGGER QUESTIONS: When was the maddest you have ever seen your spouse? In arguments, are you more of an internal processor or a verbal processor? How about your partner? What part of aging are you most looking forward to? Least excited about?
