When Kia Ragland says she has “the perfect eye”, she's not kidding. Kia has been tested for nuances in the way her eyes detect color, and it should come as no surprise that the Director of Product Development at Kylie Cosmetics is a shade above the crowd when it comes to spotting the differences in say, Ruby Woo and Dior 999.Kia tells us she got into the beauty game early on, but it was slightly out of necessity. As a bi-racial woman in a predominantly white area, she learned how to do her own hair and makeup in the 4th grade, and from there an interest grew in learning how the products she was using were created, eventually resulting in Kia becoming a cosmetologist by her senior year of high school. Okay, so when we say “interest”, we're clearly under-selling-Kia has ambition for miles and even tells us that during college, she was known to work 2-3 internships at once! This ambition has clearly served Kia well with stops along her career journey at Stila and SmashBox Cosmetics where she created one of the products she is still proudest of to this day: “Punked” a purple-grey lip color that was so well-received it not only sold out and turned Kia into an award-winning creator. To hear the whole story of how Kia trusted her gut all the way to winning Fashion Group International's Rising Star Award and more of how she takes products from concept to market, listen to this ep wherever you get your podcasts!
On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Samantha Cutler to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Sam is the Founder of Petite ‘n Pretty, a Beverly Hills-based prestige beauty brand for young creatives. With 15-years of experience developing prestige beauty products, Samantha is no stranger to innovating and launching new concepts, having formulated some of the industry's favorite cult products for brands including MAC, Smashbox and Stila. However, it wasn't until she became a mother that her journey into creating a new, essential category in beauty began. Having been makeup-obsessed from a young age, Samantha has always viewed cosmetics as an outlet for individuality and self-expression. From working behind the makeup counter to designing products for top brands, there was one thing that always stuck with Samantha: the creative freedom that came with her first beauty experience, sparked from those special moments at her mother's vanity as a child. Years later, those memories came to life once again, watching her own children light up when swiping on sparkles. But this time, Samantha realized that the products that her children were using were far from created for them and set out on a glitter revolution, developing a brand specifically for the next generation. Launched in summer 2018, Samantha founded Petite ‘n Pretty to encourage girls and boys to sparkle outside the lines while exploring, expressing and embracing individuality with products developed just for them. Blending her background as a product developer and mother, with the playful glimmer of her hometown of Beverly Hills, each product provides a beyond high-quality beauty interaction with youthful shades and textures. Jeanine Lobell, the founder of iconic brand Stila, is this week's guest and it's one of the best conversations I've ever been lucky enough to have. Jeanine started out as makeup artist – and still is today – and in 1994 she changed the face of beauty with her whimsical, functional brand. In this episode I ask Jeanine to take us all the way back to the ‘90s – what did it take to build a beauty brand back then? Was it easier or more difficult compared to today? How much did Estée Lauder pay her for her brand in 1999?? Jeanine is the definition of an innovator and I feel that future beauty founders could learn so much from her. She shares so many amazing, inspiring and fun stories of the decades she has spent in the beauty industry, and also shares what she would do differently if Stila launched today. If you love this episode I would love it if you could write a review on Apple Podcasts or leave a review over on Spotify. It makes a big difference. While you're at it, if you subscribe to BeautyMe wherever you listen, you'll never miss another episode. Be sure to head to TikTok to see my video content with Jeanine @charissekenion and definitely check out this week's newsletter where I share some really lovely insights from Jeffrey Fulvimari, the illustrator who created the legendary Stila girls.

After dropping out of high school and trying to forge her own path in the world, serial entrepreneur and world-renowned celebrity makeup artist Jeanine Lobell fell in love with cosmetics. Thanks to her try-anything attitude and strong work ethic, she quickly moved up the ranks to work on famous faces like Nicole Kidman and Natalie Portman for the covers of Vogue and Vanity Fair. When Jeanine founded Stila in 1994, with its professional-grade colors and ultra-wearable formulas in recyclable packaging, it took the makeup world by storm and earned a cult following almost overnight. She saw unprecedented growth in the first five years and had numerous investors scrambling to buy the company, which she ultimately sold to Estee Lauder in 1999.Now, she is disrupting the beauty industry all over again with her direct-to-consumer brand, Neen, the first-ever subscription-based card that offers new ways to play with makeup and experience tutorials. In this episode, Jeanine speaks to us about how she discovered her purpose as a high-school dropout and someone who was regularly fired from jobs early in her career. We discuss how Jeanine finally realized her worth, what her superpowers were as a first-time founder when she launched Stila, and the advice she has for women who are looking to make a similar leap in their careers. We also take a look at the importance of having an abundance mindset, owning who you authentically are, finding your own voice, and so much more! In this episode, we'll talk to Jeanine about:* What Jeanine means by the “prisons” we build out of the opinions of others. [03:00]* Some of the ways Jeanine has stayed true to herself throughout her career. [04:14]* The dichotomy between her inner wild child and her strong work ethic. [05:35]* Why Jeanine decided to go to mime school in Paris (and what it taught her). [07:23]* A look at her first forays into the world of makeup. [10:06]* What a hot dog stand taught Jeanine about entrepreneurship! [11:15]* Why she believes that none of the stops on your journey are a mistake. [12:55]* How Jeanine stood out and moved up the beauty ranks quickly. [17:23]* Advice for having compassion for yourself as a first-time founder. [18:50]* Innovations (and happy accidents) in the Stila origin story. [23:48]* How Jeanine thinks about competition, comparison, and abundance. [28:07]* The perspective that came with being a first-time mom and a first-time founder. [31:40]* The conflict that can come from projecting your values and ideas onto others. [34:45]* A tip for dealing with intrusive thoughts: tell yourself “that's not true!” [39:50]* Jeanine reminds us that we are all works in progress. [40:30]* Insight into the experience of selling her first company to Estee Lauder. [42:45]* Seasons of hardship in Jeanine's journey as a serial entrepreneur. [45:27]* Finding new ways to play with makeup and experience tutorials with Neen. [46:53]* The unique magic of Neen's subscription cards. [49:45]* Expectations of success versus the truth of what you're doing. [51:15]* Top mistakes that first-time founders make in their businesses. [54:00]* How Jeanine holds herself accountable without putting pressure on herself. Jeanine Lobell is a legend within the beauty industry, and her career has evolved a number of times. She made a name for herself as a makeup artist working on covers of Vogue, W, and Vanity Fair with stars like Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman and Nicole Kidman. She then took a major leap into the world of beauty products, founding Stila Cosmetics and pioneering paper packaging and a playful approach to makeup that resonated with a new generation of consumers. Now, she's one-upped herself once again with the creation of her direct-to-consumer beauty brand Neen, which she launched just last April. With Neen, Jeanine created the first-ever subscription card including five peel-back makeup swatches encouraging the consumer to try out new creative looks, but only invest in the items they truly fall in love with. Hear how she's built, sold, and pioneered brands that have changed the beauty landscape for the better on this week's episode. Despite the bevy of beauty brands hitting the market, makeup artist and industry veteran Jeanine Lobell believes every creative has the right to do just that: create. "I don't mind that [beauty is] crowded. I don't want to tell anyone not to do something. If you want to make something, go for it," Lobell said on this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. "I always feel like I need to say, 'Well, why?' 'Who are you making it for?' 'What are you making?' If you're just making it because it's an 'I want to have a brand, too' [type of] thing, that's a difficult way to go about it. But if you're making it from yourself, then — not to sound like a total nerd, but — you're trying to live your dream and I'm all for it." After successfully founding '90s "it" brand Stila in 1994 and selling it to Estée Lauder Companies five years later, Lobell knows what it takes to start a beauty brand. But her latest venture, Neen, a DTC makeup line that operates via a subscription model, required considerable unconventional thinking. Case in point: Each month, shoppers receive a Neen postcard showcasing five models all wearing the same shades in varying makeup looks. The cards include color samples to encourage trying before buying, as well as a QR code for each look that leads to a tutorial video on the brand's website. And while Lobell is considered a master in cool-girl makeup, the models — not Lobell — lead the video tutorials. As for the products themselves, they are clean, and both the postcards and product packaging are made from recycled materials. As for integrating multiple concepts into Neen, Lobell said, "I wanted to bring all these sides of myself, the person who likes to design, [prioritize sustainable] packaging [and] make product, and bring that into the culture of my brand."

Terri Bryant has worked as a professional makeup artist for models and celebrities and as an educator for brands like Dior, Smashbox and Josie Maran. After being diagnosed with Parkinsons, Terri realized that there needed to be an easier, better way for everyone to apply makeup and Guide Beauty was born. It’s exciting to see your art come to life in a photo or walking down the runway, but to teach and share my love of makeup has always been my greatest joy. While makeup artistry always came easily for me, I could see just how challenging it was for so many of my clients and friends. Simply learning the steps to apply makeup doesn’t always translate into applying it with confidence. With GUIDE BEAUTY, we have built in ease-of-use to the actual tools and formulas. These products will literally GUIDE your hand to easier and better application. And, of course, I will be there every step of the way with tutorials and tips at guidebeauty.com. I am often asked how I can truly relate to the average makeup user when I have the skills of a professional makeup artist. But it was a major life change that led to the epiphany that there must be an easier and better way for everyone to apply makeup. A few years ago, I started to question why I too was struggling with certain makeup techniques. My doctor provided the answer when I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. So now I am a professional makeup artist, beauty educator, AND someone who knows what it feels like to struggle to get their eyeliner straight and their brows on point. Though it comes with challenges, my diagnosis has given me an unexpectedly beautiful gift. One that I am grateful and excited to share. I am able to approach makeup and how we apply it from a unique lens. GUIDE BEAUTY allows me to reimagine the world of makeup with formulas and tools designed to make applying makeup feel just as fabulous as you’ll look wearing it

With summer somehow already here, I thought it would be a good time to bring my Summer 2020 Edit. An edit is basically a curation of products for whatever the theme is. I will be enjoying these beauty products from the comfort of my home since I am still in quarantine. Also, for beauty news, I will be taking about Sephora's 15% pledge, Model Munroe Bergdof joining L'Oréal Paris' UK Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board, and more.

Rachel Liverman is the co-founder and CEO of GLOWBAR, a new skincare concept disrupting the spa industry with no-fluff 30-minute, customized and solution-oriented treatments at $65. As a third-generation esthetician, Rachel struggled to find an effective, accessible and trustworthy source for consistent facial treatments administered by expertly trained estheticians. She channelled her multigenerational knowledge in skincare into creating a solution and she decided to work with the first accredited esthetics school in the country (founded by her grandmother and now owned by her mother), The Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics, to research consumer and esthetician challenges before officially launching GLOWBAR in June 2019. On today’s episode we talk about Rachel’s career journey and how she worked up the ranks in the beauty industry for 10 years working with brands like Birchbox, BeautyBlender and Stila before taking the leap to start Glowbar, we talk about her first steps in building Glowbar, she explains why she decided to go the co-founder route, and of course we get into her best beauty tips and SPOILER ALERT, less is more.

Quanto contano i like? Molto dirai!
