Charnaie Gordon's first memory of seeing herself represented in a children's literature was in the book “Corduroy” by Don Freeman. Seeing someone who looked like her and shared her same living situation had a great effect on her. Now, as a diversity and inclusion expert and blogger, she works to not only make other children feel represented in literature, but to remind all readers that the world is a diverse place. There are still challenges to this, as people of color are finding some of their content misunderstood by publishers, while many consumers seem aware of promoting diversity only during moments of political controversy. We know that books are what gives many of us special access to all the places, people, perspectives and experiences we may never have or have yet to encounter. But the question remains, how diverse are these people, perspectives and experiences we learn about? Who's voices are we not hearing from? Join the conversation to hear about the lack of diversity within the publishing industry and its trickle-down effects, and why having discussions with your kids about diversity only matters if you mean it. Quotes • “That's often the biggest misconception: People hear the word ‘diversity,' and they think, ‘Oh, that's for people of color.' No, it includes everybody.”(10:20-10:31 | Charnaie) • “People always say, ‘Well, why is this important?' Well, why isn't it important?” (11:23-11:2:26 | Charnaie) • “For me, how I organize my library is, I'm just going to put ‘back to school' books that have all children represented that have the theme of going back to school. I don't care what color they are, if they have a disability or not, if they are LGBTQ+.”(29:49-30:13 | Charnaie) • “It's just like having a conversation with your child about fairness. You don't have anxiety around that it's just, ‘Hey. This is fair and this isn't.' (39:15-39:26 | Charnaie) Stats • “A 2014 diversity baseline survey by Lee & Low books, an independent children's book publisher, found that 76% of the publishing industry was white, and diversity was most lacking on the editorial side, where 85% of employees were white.”(19:04-19:28 | Sasha) • "Every year Lee & Low has a time period in which BIPOC writers can submit a manuscript, and if chosen, win a book publishing contract." (22:39-23:04 | Charnaie) • “If you don't see the book you are looking for in the library, just request it. Libraries can do that, they can get the book in. It's the same with the bookstore, if you go there and the book you are looking for is not there, please request it. This helps publishers know that there's a demand. And it doesn't cost you a thing.”(42:05-42:31 | Charnaie) • “Don't also discount checking out your local thrift stores, they have books there, too. There's also thriftbooks.com, which has a variety of children's books at a discounted price.” (47:19- 47:40 | Charnaie) --Notable links-- Connect with Charnaie Gordon: Website: https://charnaiegordon.com/ IG: @hereweeread Shop Charnaie's Diverse & Inclusive Book Recommendations: https://charnaiegordon.com/resources/shop-my-amazon-store-for-diverse-amp-inclusive-recommendations Subscribe to our Mailing List: www.TheOfficialMomologist.com Connect with The Momologist™: https://www.instagram.com/theofficialmomologist/ https://www.facebook.com/TheOfficialMomologist ------ The Momologist™ is a production of The Reel Media Group. I love cooking almost as much as I love reading, and, in my opinion, a well-written cookbook can be as much fun to read as literary fiction. LA Son, Well Fed, and Back to Basics are three very different cookbooks that are all a great read in different ways. With me today are the hosts of my new favorite show, the Three Kitchens podcast. Sarah Somasundaram, Erin Walker and Heather Dyer are longtime friends and passionate home cooks. On their weekly podcast they take listeners along for a deep dive into a recipe. They talk - and laugh - through the challenges, successes and failures along the way as they tackle recipes from around the world with locally found ingredients, right in their own home kitchens. Sarah, Erin and Heather joined me today for a cookbook-palooza – each of them shared their personal favorite cookbooks and what they've learned from them. I guarantee you're gonna be starving by the end of this one. They told me about Butter Tarts (!) and I showed them a naked picture of Anthony Bourdain. It got weird. I know it can sound intimidating to call a lawmaker. But your calls MATTER. Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for the office of your elected official. The person who answers your call will make note of your message and pass it on to the member of Congress. Their addresses are also listed if you would like to send something in writing. This script is easy to follow: "Good morning. My name is _____ and I live at _____. I am a constituent and have a deep love for my community and neighbors. I urge Senator/Representative _____, as an elected official who represents me, to protect our safety by leading the way toward gun violence prevention. Specifically, I am asking Senator/Rep _____ to advocate for the The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021 (H.R. Eight) and the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021 (H.R. 1446). I will be casting my next vote based on his or her legislative response to the gun violence epidemic in America. Thank you for your time." The highlighted portion is especially important – it's time we let our lawmakers know that if they don't vote to keep us safe from guns, they won't have a job much longer. Please know that even if you live in a blue state, these calls and letters are still very important. It's our 100th episode! Let's celebrate, but in the middle of the celebration, let's have an existential crisis! It was tough to be happy this week, but I was able to do it because I had something special in my back pocket: an interview with Charnaie Gordon. Charnaie is a wife, mom, and former Computer Programmer turned full-time Content Creator and Author with both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Computer Science/Information Technology. She's also a Distinguished Toastmaster and huge literacy advocate/champion. Her blog, Here Wee Read, is where she expresses her creativity and passion for reading, diverse literature, and literacy. She's also the founder of a children's literacy organization, 50 States 50 Books, where her family collects and donates diverse children's books to deserving kids in each of the 50 U.S. states. We also talked about the changes we've made in our life because of the book "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. Bookworms, there was simply no better way to celebrate 100 episodes than to hang out with Charnaie. Make sure you listen to the end of the episode to learn how you can help me celebrate 100 episodes by helping Charnaie out. This week, Brittany is joined by guest co-host Shira Dreksler (Betches' Sr. Director of Talent and Community) to chat with children's book author and mom of two, Charnaie Gordon. Charnaie is here to talk all about navigating conversations around race and diversity with your kids. To start off, Charnaie shares how her love for reading, writing, and literacy led her started her blog and podcast Here Wee Read. They discuss the importance of diverse books, and classic children's books that actually have negative racial stereotypes. Plus, she tells us about her non-profit, 50 States 50 Books, and how you can be a part of giving children more access to diverse and inclusive books. Then they chat about where to even begin with teaching about racism and diversity to children, the right time to start that conversation, and some of the best books to introduce to your kids. Now that the conversation about race and Black Lives Matter has come to a forefront, it's important that we understand how we can each keep it going within our homes and communities. Danielle asks Charnaie all about having a dialogue about racial injustice with our kids, whether they are young or teenagers, ways we can incorporate cultural awareness into our households on a daily basis, and looking inward (and around us) to become true advocates and allies to the Black Lives Matter movement. Also, why not everyone needs to advocate in the same way, and what Charnaie hopes will happen from this moment forward to become a more equal and just society. While this conversation is just the tip of the iceberg concerning the questions that need to be asked and answered, it is a good point from which to begin, and covers many relatable topics about which so many of us are hoping to begin to acknowledge and understand. If you are looking to become a more socially aware and culturally conscientious parent, this is definitely an episode you don't want to miss.Links for Charnaie Gordon:http://hereweeread.comhttp://instagram.com/hereweereadhttp://facebook.com/hereweereadhttp://twitter.com/hereweereadhttp://instagram.com/50states50books See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

She started her blog as a book reviewer who help people find fantastic diverse books for their families (after getting asked for children’s book recommendations from lots of friends and family!). On this episode of the podcast we were joined by Charnaie Gordon who is the creator of the 50 States, 50 Books movement (https://www.50states50books.net/). What started off as a way for her kids to give back has turned into a movement that in less than a year has donated diverse books to underprivileged kids to over half of the 50 states! We had the chance to discuss with her the value of reading for kids along with how they plan to continue their efforts once they reach all 50 states. The best news is their still looking to donate more books to more kids, so go to their website if you want to apply to get books for your classroom or to give books to help their cause! https://www.50states50books.net/ Instagram: @hereweeread and @ 50states50books --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/valueaddsvalue/support

Her blog, Here Wee Read, is where she is currently expressing her creativity and passion for reading, diverse literature, and literacy.
