In this episode we meet the incredible JP Davis, a social entrepreneur, serial mega-fundraiser for important causes, and a gay man who bucks the perception that Louisville, Kentucky, is only for straights. JP talks about his career from White House Intern under George Bush Jr., to assistant to a Conservative member of the UK Parliament, to returning to Louisville to launch his consulting firm, JP David Partners, and his support for both infrastructure organizations and nonprofits. He talks candidly to Kristi and Alissa about his teenage years, realizing he was gay, his brother's experiences with conversion therapy, and dealing with the town and the church. We also address the broader societal issues of homophobia and racism, the role economic factors play, and the need for compassion to foster real change.https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyjpdavis/https://www.jpdavispartners.com/aboutStories:-00:00 - Start00:11 - Introducing JP Davis from Louisville00:46 - Kristi said: "Is this her somebody"?01:34 - In Louisville, three gay couples holding hands02:15 - "Louisville is so gay"04:06 - Changing hearts and minds in Louisville, KY.04:45 - Growing up knowing I liked boys05:54 - "I was super-afraid to act on it"07:20 - The letter to my 7th Grade self09:08 - "It's child abuse to tell a child they're bad"11:15 - "I stayed in the closet six more years"14:08 - We hold our parents to such a standard15:03 - "My Dad looks at me and sees shame in himself"19:45 - "Do you know a transexual?"23:50 - Start a rumor about yourself25:50 - "I'd serve with the proud, gap people any time"27:03 - JP Davis Partners28:18 - Work in social impact31:15 - "It's not easy being a homo in Kentucky sometimes"31:45 - Celebrating Jordan37:20 - "Dad, I will push you off the boat"38:18 - Advice for younger generations

A Louisville native and self-proclaimed life-long student, Dan Jones has a vision for the future Louisville landscape. And his vision is coming to life. Jones is the Chairman and CEO of 21st Century Parks, a non-profit organization seeking to develop a 4,000 to 5,000-acre park and trail system in the last major undeveloped corridor surrounding Louisville. Jones grew up near Cherokee Park and sets out to repeat what Fredrick Law Olmstead Parks have previously done for Louisville with the 21st Century Parks initiative. Jones oversees the planning, design, and construction of the new parks. Since the park’s initiative in 2002, the project is on the fast track to having the first phase of construction complete in 5 to 7 years. Jones previously worked as a real estate developer and owned a golf center. He enjoys hiking, camping, fishing, skiing, running and reading.
Everyone knows that gay men sleep with men, and straight men sleep with women. Right? On this week's show, we learn it’s not always that simple. Today we’re listening back to a conversation we had with Dr. Joe Kort. He’s a sex and relationship therapist based in Detroit, and when we talked in September 2013, he’d just had an article published at the Huffington Post about why straight-identified men sometimes have sex with other men. In it, he shares a whole list of reasons why this phenomenon might happen. These reasons are by turns predictable (they’re in prison with no access to women), poignant (they seek to replace the affection they didn’t get from their fathers), hilarious (narcissism!) and taboo (we’re pretty sure this was the first time the word cuckholding has been uttered on Strange Fruit). It was a fascinating conversation and Dr. Kort shed some light on a lot of things. (NOTE: This conversation includes some blunt talk about human sexuality, and some discussion of sexual abuse —if that’s not something you can listen to, consider sitting this one out, and we'll see you next week! ♥) To close out today's show, labor historian Toni Gilpin shares a little-known story from 1940s Louisville. A local chapter of the United Farm Machinery workers organized at Louisville’s International Harvester plant in the late 1940s, and began advocating for racial equality both inside and outside of the plant. Their efforts would lead to an entire factory of mostly white workers walking off the job to protest the unfair treatment of their African American colleagues. Outside the factory walls, union members tried to desegregate the Brown Hotel and Cherokee Park—both whites-only at the time—and were met with violence and forcible removal by police.
Labor historian Toni Gilpin will make two appearances in Louisville tomorrow to tell the little-known story of a local labor union that was ahead of its time. A local chapter of the United Farm Machinery workers organized at Louisville's International Harvester plant in the late 1940s, and began anti-racism activism both inside out outside of the plant. Gilpin spoke with Kaila Story of WFPL's Strange Fruit about the work of Local 236. She will appear tomorrow afternoon at the University of Louisville and tomorrow night at the National Association of Letter Carriers.
